Just discovered this - I'm in awe of this guy. One man and a guitar, Totally inspiring. Everything a great musician should be, connected to the past and an accomplished master whilst driving this music forward in an original way. I'm fussy and play decent guitar myself but could listen to Jeff play for hours. Only wish I could turn back the clock and try mastering this style. One day this music will catch on big-time. Jeff Peterson, I salute you - aroha from a big fan in New Zealand, Play on man
Glad you found out. It's interesting to know, you can import many picking style from standard tuning guitar to slack key tuning but not the other way around. Claw hammer and some banjo rolls can't harmonised well on standard tuning guitar.
What a Fabulous & educational video you uploaded here. Island girl here, now living in San Francisco and just picked up the guitar. This is so beautifully put together! Thank you!
WOW! Jeff calls this a demonstartion but it teaches more about the fundamentals of Hawaiian slack key than most other so-called instructional videos. I'll be coming back to this often. Thanks!
I thought I recognized the face from the AMP concert poster. Came here to make sure. You are going to be in my home town doing a concert on March 14th. I hope I will be able to make it. I very much appreciate your laid back, relaxed introduction to Hawai'ian slack key guitar in this video. Beautiful!
Wow! I am blown away! Jeff Peterson has a new fan! I've never heard anything like this before! His attitude, skill, and style are outstanding! Definitely world- class!
So cool. We just finished a video about the Paniolos for the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Jeff's comment about the Paniolos & their guitars was interesting. Beautiful technique. Mahalo!
Beautifully rendered Jeff from beginning to end. Deeply considered and generous in spirit. Mahalo nui loa for sharing this heavenly musical tradition with us.
nice video and i love the way you handle that 6 string, i am from Tennessee and play guitar too but have always used the traditional tuning, now i want to explore slack key style
I have been playing the standard Spanish guitar tuning for decades until , I started going into the the claw hammer and banjo rolls that I have to tune the guitar to slack key to play that style. Didn't know slack key tuning can play lots of other stuff that standard Guitar tuning can't. Cheers to slack key tuning.
Sounds a lot like Empty Calm by The Number 12 Looks Like You. Don't know how to categorize the band, some mixture of jazz, avant-garde, and death metal. But that particular song is for sure some kind of variation on Slack Key.
I play Hawaiian Slack Key guitar also. Jeff is from Maui. I'm from the Big Island. Slack Key originated on the Big Island. The "Roots" of Hawaiian Slack Key guitar are from the Big Island. Jeff does have some essence of the original roots style, yet it is highly stylized. "Roots' Slack Key players like Alice Namakelua, Fred Punahoa, Ledward Kaapana play the more simple, soulful style that originated here on the Island of Hawaii. Ledward, in my opinion, is the last living legendary "Roots" player of true, pure, unadulterated, Hawaiian Slack Key. I've known Ledward for over 40 years, and he influenced me to play somewhat like him, though I developed my own unique style-sometimes based on the rythmns of an "Ipu", a percussive gourd that players of it accompany hula dancers.
OLAMANA...1975..WAIKIKI!!! SO VERY SPECIAL.......classic first album.....KAHALUI........DRUG PROBLEM CAME TO HAWAII IN 1978............MANY DID NOT SURVIVE! LOVE MY OHANA &KULIANA!
Music isn't a competition. Both Jeff and Led have something to contribute to slack key. One way of playing is not "better" than the other. In fact, Led and Jeff play together at times. As Jeff said in the video, "It's very important to me as someone practicing a cultural tradition here in Hawaii to always have a connection to the past, to the kapuna, those who came before. Whenever I play or do an arrangement of a song, I keep in mind where the music came from before me. As long as you have that connection with the kapuna, music can move forward in a way that's still culturally rooted."
Yes, I do I wasn't sure if that's what was really said, I didn't know that. I found it mildly entertaining because I didn't know it was a person's name that was my point. Although I wasn't trying to make a point because it was a question so quit trying to be rude.
Aloha Sir :-) Just wanted to ask a quick question. I was once "stranded" ;-) over in Hawaii for 3 years and over heard one of Your songs which I still have even now. The song I speak of now is called "Polipoli". I was wondering if You'd be so kind as to share the meaning of that particular word Please? Mahalo
similar to a banjo, although less shrill, and the strum/ finger roll pattern on the guitar sound more pleasing, and less danceish and uppity like on the banjo.
Always adore your music Jeff, it was an honor to share a table with you at the Hokus a few years back.. Truly a memorable occasion ~ Lea in Seattle www.dannycouchfanaddicts.com see you at the Slack Key Festival here in Nov
search for Tião Carreiro e Pardinho videos on youtube, they played authentic Brazilian "Country" Music that is someway similar to this kind of guitar playing.
I doesn't need to be, the pentatonic scale just lends itself well to blues and rock, which are both very popular forms of music, especially for the guitar.
You can play pentatonic scales in open tunings as well, that's what a lot of blues slide players use. Standard tuning aims to make it easier to play across multiple keys, whereas open tunings can make one key easier than the rest.

This guy is amazing. Talk about technique and precision . . .
Jeff Peterson is as articulate verbally as he is musically and that is saying a great deal. This is a wonderful video. Thanks!!!
I had always wondered what this style of guitar playing this was called. So glad to finally have a great explanation. What a great sound.
u like him

Jim Kimo West brought me here. Thank you,Jeff. So...beautiful.

Beautiful! Glad to learn a little more about slack key! That must bring you a lot of joy! ;)
beautiful demonstration.
WOW! Jeff calls this a demonstartion but it teaches more about the fundamentals of Hawaiian slack key than most other so-called instructional videos. I'll be coming back to this often. Thanks!
Thank you. I really love listening to Jeff's performance. I never knew this existed until now. Great video!
Beautiful beautiful! Love this music... informative video and very enjoyable to watch... thanks for sharing your story!!! You play so passionately 💕

Greetings from Ireland. Reminds me of the triditional Celtic music style.
right this the same as celtics pickin and called Travis pickin
This is a beautiful style of guitar and I love it. Please do some lessons on slack key pieces! Continue with what your doing! It's great! God bless!

7:35 is my favorite part! Song is beautiful!
Much love from the Big Island! Thanks for the lesson

Thank you! Very informative, beautiful and making me hope for more.
Beautiful and lush--a real breath of fresh air. I believe I've heard some of Jeff's music on the New Age music channel (DirecTV).
Jeff this is a great video and fantastic playing, thanks!
Thanks from Oahu. Bravo!
Aloha!!
Maui no ka oi!!!
Great playing, I am starting to learn slack key. Still learning ukulele.
Who in their right mind decided EADGBE for tuning.... now THIS is what a guitar needs to be tuned in!
to be fair the standard tuning is an incredibly useful tuning that is very easy to play in
One of the very best things I've ever seen on youtube.
I love your style of playing and appreciate you posting this video. I learned a lot!
Great talent! Awesome story in the beginning too!

Beautiful none the less, i play the bass and can relate to using different turnings for an opener sound, granted an octave lower.
Beautiful! Reminds me a lot of American Primitive Guitar.
Really, really nice cuz Jeff. That right there is a tasty presentation, thanks too much.
It's so beautiful. I need to try
Mahalo Jeff, awesome Braddah.
Great Video!

sweet lesson
What song is being played at 0:38? I'd love to purchase the sheet music!

Absolutely uplifting and educating! WELL DONE! ~;)
hes amazing
So much mahalo for your knowledge, actually motivated me to learn this art. Do we tune in 432? As far as history goes?
Jeff is a very accomplished Slack-Key player! He seems to have some classical influence also.
Basically, what tuning you use should depend on what you're playing.
This fuckin guy....jams. Beautiful
Ok so what are the strings tuned to?
I've found a new passion. :)
if anyone knows the song at 7:35 lmk
Interesting. Very similar to Travis picking.
So how do you tune a guitar in slack-key tuning? What are the notes?
So what is the tuning for this style of playing? Did Jeff ever say it? I must have missed it.
Yes, I do I wasn't sure if that's what was really said, I didn't know that. I found it mildly entertaining because I didn't know it was a person's name that was my point. Although I wasn't trying to make a point because it was a question so quit trying to be rude.

What makes Slack Key guitar so different than just open tuning fingerstyle guitar? I'm not hearing much difference but maybe I'm missing something.
great music.
Slack key, that what the old blues player called tuning standard tuning down a half step. Even Hendrix and SRV called it slack tuning.
Mahalo for sharing your mana`o and your music.
Me ke aloha,
Auntie Wanda
Happy birthday
beautiful, and very informative :-D
Never mentions the tuning he's playing in?
Amazing
So what's the tuning?
th-cam.com/video/WfEk0HH9zGA/w-d-xo.html
D G D G B D
This guy came to my school and blew my God dam mind. This is nothing compared to what he did at my school.
tortoise 2.0 seeing him play live is life changing
@@moeb3325 what school are you from
Jeff what tuning is this in..? taro?
Open D or G
Why does it need to be pentatonic?
I always thought it was just open G tuning. I didn't know it originated in Hawaii!
Jeff: What brand of guitar are you using in this video?
It's a Goodall, amazing builder that was in Hawaii.
similar to a banjo, although less shrill, and the strum/ finger roll pattern on the guitar sound more pleasing, and less danceish and uppity like on the banjo.
1:18 King Kamehameha?
Now I want to see the part about the regional cuisine that was shown next originally, lol!
that's a beautiful Goodall
Always adore your music Jeff, it was an honor to share a table with you at the Hokus a few years back.. Truly a memorable occasion ~ Lea in Seattle www.dannycouchfanaddicts.com see you at the Slack Key Festival here in Nov
totally spiritual for me.
search for Tião Carreiro e Pardinho videos on youtube, they played authentic Brazilian "Country" Music that is someway similar to this kind of guitar playing.
Only ingredient missing is the Aloha spirit.
I doesn't need to be, the pentatonic scale just lends itself well to blues and rock, which are both very popular forms of music, especially for the guitar.
Gabby, Sonny, Atta, Ozzie, Jeff.
Yes King Kamehameha 1st, the great.
That sounds like "milonga pampeana"
Standard tuning exists for a reason. It is pentatonic.
You can play pentatonic scales in open tunings as well, that's what a lot of blues slide players use. Standard tuning aims to make it easier to play across multiple keys, whereas open tunings can make one key easier than the rest.
Kamehameha is the king who unified Hawai'i.
I think its D-G-d-g-b(h)-d'
They are called 'Paniola', and somehow they use tge term -Paniolo.
Yah, your point is? You do have a point?
Who came here from Ukulele Corner? And how is @JeffPetersonGuitar looking exactly the same now as 13 years ago?
hahaha
This is so nice, the harmonics sound fantastic. Really enjoyed this video.
