  • BARN FIND | FIRST START IN 24 YEARS | 1978 Jaguar XJ6
    Welcome to our 1978 Series 2 Jaguar XJ6 barn find. The Jag was stored in a garage not far from here since 1999, 24 years ago, when it was taken off the road for maintenance by its previous owner.
    The challenge we have set ourselves in this Jaguar barn find series is to revive the Jag and to get the car back on the road again.
    So let’s crack on, We hope you enjoy the episode
    Huge thank you for watching.

    Looking forward to seeing you wake up this sleeping beauty. From what we can see, it looks like it's had a decent life. I've always liked the Series II, I think they're the nicest looking of the all the XJs.

    Hi Guys, great video. Your problem is with lack of choking. I see that the AED is missing and has been replaced with a short length of tube between the tops of the carbs. On my series 1 I also removed the AED because they are unreliable. I used to choke one of the carbs with a doubled over piece of cereal box card placed between the mixture lever and adjustment screw. Once started you can then remove after about a minute. You may also want to check that there is oil in the dashpots of the carbs. 😊

    I got to drive my dad's 74 xj6 as a teenager in the 70s three things I remember are the ring/ting from the starter motor , a tin of lighter fuel in the centre console to clean the electric window switches and the accident fuel cut-off reset switch was in a box in the front passenger footwell
    Good to see you guys again glad all is well and thanks for the entertaining videos

    It's great to see you guys working on cars again! :)
    With those SU carbs, get some 3 in 1 oil in the dashpots. The engine should then be able to rev more easily as well as tick over more evenly.

    The old girl i worth saving. I'm no mechanic but a good flushing of the fuel system, new fuel pumps and possibly new tanks would certainly help. Of course the pump and tanks could be fine but after 23+ years sitting, it would be miracle if they were okay. It's a Jaguar, after all. Thanks for sharing.

    If the AED unit between the carburettors is missing you will need to put your foot to the floor on the accelerator. The AED works like a choke. It reads the temperature of the exhaust manifolds and adjusts the fuel input. Then there is the fuel pumps in boot. One the series 1 they were in the spare wheel well. Very easy to get to. I think on the later models they went in the tank.

    Hi Gents. So good to see you back at it . I restored a 1976 4.2 in 2009 for my daughters wedding . Has the same velour interior but was Greensand. It was looking pretty forlorn parked on the owners driveway . I knocked on the door to ask if it was for sale . He replied the scrapman had offered him £350 but he wanted £500 . I said l would pay him the £500 if it started . He said he hadn't started it for some months . Anyway, he got the keys and it started up immediately and purred like a cat !!! 7 weeks later , after much welding and painting all the car bar the roof it was mot'd 4 days before the wedding !!! Well done ! Did you say you were replacing the tanks ? Cheers !

    Great to see you back chaps, the jag is a great project, regarding the engine runs, looks like you've sussed the ignition so put it out of your mind, I'm sure this is fuel related! I've used those motorcycle drip feed bottles successfully when "engine whispering" to save firing up the fuel pump, tanks and grotty lines etc The SU's dashpots can be lifted to check the piston operation(or simply lift them with a finger in the carb throat), state of the needles and a look down the jets should show fuel if the floats and needle valves are behaving in the float bowls, make sure you have oil in the dashpot dampers when you re-assemble, It sounds like you have no choke in operation so would recommend you get that working that may help fire the old girl up, putting your hand over the carb mouth while cranking will also suck a bit of fuel up past the jet if there is any crud in the carbs preventing it. All the best with your new project!

    Carbs off strip and clean. First job you should have done on a car that has been standing for so long. Something you might want to check is the octane rating. I am not sure when the change over from leaded petrol to unleaded was so you may need an additive adding to modern-day petrol. The inside of the distributor is what the inside of your carbs will be like. Plus the distributor should be stripped and cleaned to make sure the advance and retard mechanism isn't seized. Nice hearing you talk as my Dad was a Geordie. He died when I was 18 I'm now 71. Good luck restoring the Jag

  • @CurtainFlapper
    @CurtainFlapper 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    The needle valves might be stuck in the carbs, make sure theres oil in the pots too as that can make it sluggish, dont over do the 'easy start' in the air intakes either as the engine will get used to it and not start without a sniff. Its ok to get it going but dont keep spraying it as ive seen a few engines not start without the squirt of either 1st.

    • @MartinHopkinson
      @MartinHopkinson 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Surely oil in the dashpots will oppose piston movement, which is not really what you want for starting a reluctant engine. I have to say that my method for ‘first starts’ has always been to unscrew the caps to effectively disable the dampers and allow the pistons to rise as freely as possible. It can even help to lift them manually yourself as the engine’s turning. As I understand it, the dampers are there only to briefly enrich the mixture during acceleration.

    Looks like it was originally Fern green. A pity someone robbed the number plate - I hate it when that happens. The 3.4 was a decent engine with enough poke to haul the XJ along. They were always that bit smoother than the 4.2. A working fuel pump and half a tank of fuel will see it running.

    Great video lads - got a Daimler 4.2 S2 that we are woking on ourselves and woke it from its slumber a couple of years ago. We rebuilt the carbs and did the electrical side of things too along with an oil change and the car really does tickover and start really well (when warm!). We removed the AED and rebuilt it but the thing runs far too rich so disconnected it and bought a muanl choke kit to replace it so looking forward to see what you guys are going to do with yours as a permanent fix to get it started from cold. were also going to do our fuek tanks and pumps - although it worksfrom the OSR tank very well , the NSR regsters half full permanently and doesnt pump so assume this needs a new pump and sender. Loooking forward to your future videos and getting this old girl running well ! cheers stew

    Su carbs are terrible from a cold start if the auto chokes not working, on a man choke a lever pulls the main jet down to richen it, I'd be cleaning the carbs out as well, if needles in floats are stuck you'll not get any fuel in, it's very hard to flood a car with su carbs.

    Where HAVE you been?!? I've thought about your channel and couldn't remember the name of it for months now... hoping... praying... that your Dad was okay and thinking the worst. (Forgive me). I thought for sure something tragic had happened and you had shut it all down. So glad to see you uploading again... but what happened to the other... what was it, a Mini? that you were doing? Something like that. I mean... I watched you renovate to make a tiny bit more room in the shop and then you got started on the car... bought a parts car to salvage some pieces off of... and then... what... nothing... for MONTHS! Glad to see you back.

      This is a really interesting bit of history about the car. I’ll do some research to see if I can find any more information on it. Thank you for sharing that.
      Regards
