- 1978 Jaguar XJ6 Series 2 | Barn Find | Part 3
Welcome to our 1978 2 Jaguar XJ6 Series barn find. The Jag was stored in a garage not far from us, only a couple of miles away, since 1999, 24 years ago, when it was taken off the road for maintenance by it’s previous owner.
In this episode we resolve the issues with the jammed transmission and get the car driving for the very first time in 24 years. However we discover some worrying issues.
The challenge we have set ourselves in this Jaguar barn find series, is to revive the Jag and to get the car back on the road again.
So let’s crack on, We hope you enjoy the episode
Huge thank you for watching.

Really enjoying your channel. These ol jags deserve to survive. That oil pressure is off the scale, you wanna check that the gauge hasn’t been wired up, an old trick for engines with no oil pressure! Top work lads.
You two being back has made my Christmas.
happy christmas lads
Thank you for sharing your video have a great Christmas day. Cheers
Replace the cheap rad cap, refill system and bleed fully Inc heater. Check for circulation through rad (ie waterpump) also.
Glad to see father and son working together again, like my father and me. Bleds for you from Puerto Rico, USA.
That's a good looking car.
As a new subscriber, I absolutely love your work on the Jag! You bring back wonderful memories of my father who was not only an awesome dad, but he was also my best friend. He helped me work on my 1st Jag, a 1975 XJ6! I now have 8 Jags in my collection (XK140, MK2, XKE, XJS & several XJ6s). ! I send much love and respect from NC (USA)! Continue to treasure the times with your father! Merry Christmas!
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Noticed the two different registrations on front and back ???
Another great video! I think at this point I'd be ordering a new water pump to really get the coolant moving. I do wonder though, looking at that rusty water, if the radiator and the heater matrix have had it.
Great team job!
It's brilliant having you both back on our screens. Nice to see the jaguar moving on its own, too, have a great Christmas to you both .
Great Video 👍👍Fantastic to see THE JAG moving ❤️❤️
Wip out the water pump and check the impeller, great work so far
Lovely iconic Jaguar I presume gentlemen the jag will be garaged..👍🏻
I know that the bearing on the viscous fan can give you loads of odd noises when ive worked on them back in the day
I hope it’s not a head gasket , maybe just a lot of crud and rust in the system. Great video ,
Great video, Get the water pump changed 👍
Timing chain is loose I'm 100%, on the plus side its an easy fix. Access behind the cover above the water pump (the one with the breather pipe) there is a little toothed wheel to tighten/ slacken the timing chain, they even sell a special tool for adjustment. If you take off one of the cam covers and start the engine you will see the chain slapping against the guides a it runs. Fixed mine myself with almost no mechanical knowledge after professional garages didn't want to know.
As a trainee mechanic at 17 years old (I'm now 55) I removed a 4.2 litre lump. The only help I got was when pulling the engine and gearbox out I had someone guide it all out.
Head gasket problems are rare on those engines so the water pump and the rad are worth checking over.
Good luck and a very merry xmas to you both.:)
And remember, don't get too sober lol
a good tip for getting steel parts out of alloy is to stick the component in an oven. after everything else failed I made an 'oven' out of Kingspan and a commercial hotplate and managed to get 5 snapped head-studs out of my jag V12 block. The worst corrosion is where the steel shaft sits in the alloy (unthreaded). There is enough of a gap for very strong electrolytic corrosion to take hold and no chemical will penetrate it. It's like a white powder/crust between the 2 metals
Great videos. Looking at the amount of sludge in the cooling system,it may be the radiator is partially blocked. Try some engine flush additive a couple of times. A good garage repair shop will quickly and easily test for a head gasket issue. Good luck. Looking forward to more videos.
Change the water pump, and flush out the heater pipes.
💙👊😎💙👊😎
If its taken 2 weeks to sort the thermostat wait until you have to free the head 😅 I've had them suspended from an over head pulley for DAYS because ny factory head puller wasn't up to the job
On these old Jags I would suspect the whole cooling system is furred-up and water pump needs replacing - hopefully you'll get it sorted without a head gasket but who knows??
Those engines were renowned for leaving the factory with the blocks still full of casting sand. I suggest a full back flush on the block and remove the rad and back flush that or get it checked by a radiator re-corer.
Really to see you "boys" back on the job
Lovely to see this old girl slowly waking up and coming back to life. Keep up the good work chaps.
Take the rad out and clean it and check water pump could have some propellers could off snapped off
I had a struggle with removing a rusted on exhaust recently. I had to remove the exhaust manifolds, and use loads of heat. Very satisfying moment getting the studs out finally!
Aluminum + steel fasteners = antisieze first. Brass or stainless nuts are a good choice in some applications.
Take the rad out and fill it with limescale remover and let it soak , rinse a few times .
Get a new one.
What happened to the private plates, excellent very enjoyable. 👍🏻
New subscriber here, enjoying every single minute guys. Really appreciate all the updates and explanations.
Lovely relationship you both have with each other.
the IRS is very easy to remove and makes everything easy to access once it's out. However be prepared for problems if you buy new mounts... the plates on all new ones I've seen seem to be stuck on slightly out of line from the originals and it makes getting the 8 mounting bolts back on very difficult
All the waterways in the engine will be blocked maybe might help to use a flush, if you do have to change the head gasket you will see the waterways will be blocked.
I have used this before Prestone AS105 Radiator Flush and Cleaner.
keep going chaps. lookin good🙂
Great to see it moving under its own power. Still think you might be wise to do the water pump or at least get it off and have a look. Seems to run really nice though and no tell tail smoke to suggest head gasket. You’d also get pressure in the water pretty much straight away. Torquing the head down was a good idea though. Great work anyway. Really enjoying watching and I like your way of working!! Great videos!!
I agree with looking at the water pump. Personally i would just change it as piece of mind.
Great progress chaps. Maybe do a compression test on all cylinders to completely rule out engine issue/s.
Pull your rad and get it flushed and pressure tested.. Should have run the hose through the system when thermostat was out. Great old car.. remove the thermostat and keep flushing. Keep heat cycling the engine.. check your core plugs.. if you use antifreeze and it gets muddy. Just leave it settle in a bucket and pour the clean off the top..coffee filter.. keep your old engine oil. Strain it slowly through filter for another project.. you'll get there. A great surviver.. Good luck. Thanks for video.. PS. Flush cabin heater core..join hoses to check engine.. have a pipe and clamps on hand if it blows later..they get weak..
Aw man, a pivotal moment and so good to see that beauty moving❤ loving this journey👍
When you were messing around with the gear linkage on the " box , to me it looked like the inhibitor/ lock out switch was missing from the shaft . Top work, it'll be a great car when you and your dad have finished with it . Best wishes for the new year .
Thanks for the info
Nice work chaps . You are in the north east .
Those new number plates look terrible. Please replace them with the correctly sized reflective ones - large rear, standard front.
The head gasket has almost certainly left the building. Getting the head off will be fun due to the studs corroding into the head. Lots of plus gas (WD40 is useless) and lift the head with an engine crane. Likely as not you will lift the car as well but leave it hanging. Every day just clobber the head studs with a bolt screwed on a few turns and it will eventually come off. Then you have the spectre of corroded head studs…..the joy of old Jaguars! 😂
I suggest the slight rattling is timing chains , a common problem on the XK engine . And a compression check will soon confirm if it is head gasket failure. And the rear subframe next ....... the tip of the iceberg ........good luck ! Have a great Christmas .
I’d also try disconnecting heater matrix and back flushing the matrix both way to see if there’s any muck or crap in matrix
I suggest with that much crud in the expansion tank you shoyld remove the water pipes to the rad and back flush with a pressure washer you could also do the same to the heater system and using normal water presure from a garden hose flush the engine water jacket and galleries until all you get is fresh clean water. Then run re connect and gently run the engine up making sure you bleed the system through. That will have a significant impact.
She sounds sweet for an old girl, only drilling out steel bolts out of aluminium, what a pain.
Noticing underneath the car, would you jet wash it then maybe notice any more possible leaks.
Fantastic car and great crew, well done great effort
Nice one guys, have you tried running the jag with the cap off as there might be a air lock causing pressure, have you felt the rad hoses to see if there hot? I would do a good coolant flush from the engine too as looks theres alot of crud in it. 👍
Another great video so pleased you got the gear shifter sorted out as to your overheating we know the thermostat was bad and you flushed the system and cleared the expansion tank I would suspect the radiator the core may not be efficeint anymore many Jag owners replace the radiator with a Aliuminum one they are much more efficent and the only other thing I can think of if any of the water galleries in the head are plugged you don't have oil in the water so the head gasket should be ok anyway just a few thoughts I wish you both and your families a very Merryt Christmas and Happy new Year looking forward to your next video kind regards Andy Allen.
Another great video. I would be checking the water pump guys …. I’m guessing the impeller is full of sludge or corroded away. Merry Christmas guys
Yes totally agree with this. Pull the water pump out and check as the impeller is prob all corroded away to nothing and remove the radiator and check for blocks. Almost certainly these will be your issue.
Great video. Grab yourselves a spill free funnel so you can idle the engine while it burps the air out. Also consider a sniff test kit before you condemn the head gasket
looks like the jag is coming to life to bad about the broken studs Bill USA
The oil pressure sensor by oil filter is missing a signal wire up top. It’s spayed connector.
put some k-seal in water then watch to see if back pressure stops this will tell you definitly head gasket gone but k-seal will fix head and water leaks.
The inline engines were were notorious for head gaskets and main cause was the water ways would corode away if the coolant was not changed regularly . The new type coolants/anti freeze would probably prevent this. Top timming chain can be adjusted if thays rattling but botom chain needs changing together with hydralic tebsioner and damper. It can be done in the car with care without dropping the sump . Easier if head is removed but if head is left on the studs that screw i to the timing chain cover have to be removed.
The impeller hasn't come off the back of the water pump... Have seen this a few times
End gasket seal bushed on torque convertor (auto box), there's your problem !! ATF levels are important on these 3 shifter boxes 👍Liking the fact she's a LWB version which was absconded in the series 3, and Pininfarini made a balls of that model.. ❤❤❤
As dirty as the coolant was, I'd be willing to bet that the core of the radiator is partially blocked. Pull the radiator and take it to a radiator shop to get the core rodded.
The noise maybe the fan clutch, the over heat, water pump and or the radiator might have half of the cores clogged up just like that hose was, good luck I know you'll will find it...
Thermostat bleed hole goes at the top
Leak Down Test...can see if your head gasket is blown or leaking....rad tester can also see if you are leaky out ( into cylinder if no sign of coolant anywhere )...
Good to see the project coming together - getting away with a spray of WD40 to get the gears working again was a bit of God-send. Keep plugging away on this one - it could be a lot of work to get it close to it's original glory but it would be a good journey to see.
It's not a shock that a car with a "DSG" has a problem with the transmission... 😁
I would prefer a new Quinton Hazell thermostat instead of the vintage Wax Stat because the NOS stats mostly have dried out pusher elements over the years
Do you have the correct pressure expansion caps installed? There are two different caps., cap of tank and filler cap are not interchangeable. One seals at the top, the other one at the bottom. Cheers, Chris
Take out that horible slush box and drop a propper 5 speed manual - see Harry's Garage! :)
Head gaskets are a common problem with these engines
Oil 20w50 only. To release air from the system remove the blank cap off. Start the car and put heater knob to max heat with low for air fan. Let the car run and as it pushes air top off with coolant. Noise you are hearing could be timing chain if oil is too thin
Clogged radiator core??? They cross cool.
The radiator must be full of rust and blocked, take it of and recore it and keep flushing all the water circuit
Noise maybe top timing chain tensioner can be adjusted front top of engine under breather plate
Having seen the muck being flushed out of the cooling system, the inside of the rad may well be rotten, a specialist rad business can check the flow rate and advise on the need for a new core.
Two thoughts ...
Cooling : with the amount of crud clogging the cooling system you need to make sure that every pipe is clear and I wouldn't be at all surprised if the water pump isn't producing anything like the correct flow rate. Replace it.
Head gasket : if it wasn't torqued down correctly it has got to be suspect. You've got to remove the head to check for any issues there and thus a new head gasket too.
are you getting water in oil ? maybe disconnect heater lines and plug for now
The top bracket for the power steering pump is on wrong, the cutout should face the pump
As well known, the combination of Aluminium and Steel in case of bolts/nuts is always a difficult one.
Make sure you have the right coolant caps in the right places.the one on the expansion tank is different to the one on the thermostat housing.think its a none pressure one on the thermostat housing and a pressure on e on the expansion tank.cant remember which way around they go now.
the header tank had the weong cap on
PS When trying to take those stubs of snapped bolts out, Grip the stub in the vice and wind the housing off it, rather than trying to grip the stub with mole grips or stilsons! The vice will get a lot more purchase and clamping force on the stub.
Reminds me of my 78 "S" Reg XJ6 3.4L. It was BRG and was great apart from cloth seats and a Sun damaged dash. I bought the leather seats out of scrap XJ12 and nought a 4.2L Daimler for the dashboard because the rest of it was knackered. Forty five minutes to take each dash out and almost four hours to put the good one back in, but it was worth it.
whats with the Reg change from DSG 2 S to YEL 877 S?
Plus you mentioned possible water pump noise. It will be interesting to see what it is. Last one of these I had was in 1994 but nice to see one being resurrected. Did you do to AED yet?
Also notice there is no shroud on the rad. Might that contribute to loss of cooling air???
Another brilliant video chaps I know this sounds silly but will the thermostat go in both ways if so you could accidentally have put it in the wrong way round I'm just guessing at any possibility for you. Ps hope you and your family have a great Christmas.
Have you got a brake dragging somewhere - it shouldn't need so many revs to get moving! I had a 4.2 series 2 many years ago and it would set off at idle once a gear was engaged.
Try a compression check?
that power steering bolt head is a curiouse thing. a fault from factory or later damage somehow?
How about trying some coolant 😉
Hi there where did you get your extension bar from that you used on the tap for thermostat housing a handy piece of kit
Hi
The T-bar handle came in the tap and die kit from Aldi and I used my 1/4 ratchet extension.
Many years ago when my mum was alive in 1994 I worked hard and bought a black with grey vinyl roof Daimler VDP 4.2 Mine had gearbox issue but sadly for me I wasn't given the chance to repair it..
Sadly I fell in with Appendix issues and was in hospital a while and my recovery was quick but took it easy for a while.
My mum said i could put car in garage but only a temporary fixture..
Not really mechanical minded i never really looked for issues then a few weeks later my dear Mother said I had to remove the car because her £40 lawn mower she struggled getting out the garage..
So she made me scrap it I got just £80 for such a lovely car..
However I still love Daimlers and Jaguars and today I own a beautiful burgundy 4.0 Sovereign Jaguar its a 2001 and has just 127600 miles on it..
I wish I checked the linkages on mine.. I even went to restoration college..
And also come from Coventry originally the factory was ten minutes up the road from home..
Cool video..
Is it a option to use a cooling system cleaning substance??
I see you sold the nice number plate halfway through the episode.
This video should be sponsored by WD40….where would we be without it
I suspect the previous owner sold it. Those silver on black plates are far more offensive. They look completely wrong on a 77 car.
The whole cooling system is silted up?
Sometimes Coca Cola will help to loosen bolts ie resolve rust.
Boring out bolts...get left-handed drill bits. They work sometimes... Why has it got different reg. plates front and rear?
Is that a change of number plate at the close of the episode????
I bought a so called unfixable rover 3500S ,had a fortune spent on it turned out it had a 9lb cap instead of a 13lb cap and kept spewing coolant out £5 fix
It might have had Rad Leak sealer added...too much can plug up the rad or heater cores....or even a hose ( ask me how i know that? )...
What happened to the Mini.. and the lotus? Proper get away car, different plates front and read.
Whats happening with the mini?
