  • BARN FIND | 1978 Jaguar XJ6 | Part 2
Welcome to our 1978 Series 2 Jaguar XJ6 barn find. The Jag was stored in a garage not far from us, only a couple of miles away, since 1999, 24 years ago, when it was taken off the road for maintenance by it’s previous owner.
In this episode we remove, refurbish and reinstall the fuel tank and get the car running and idling, however we discover some worrying issues.
The challenge we have set ourselves in this Jaguar barn find series, is to revive the Jag and to get the car back on the road again.
So let’s crack on, We hope you enjoy the episode
    Huge thank you for watching.

Loving watching the Jag come back to life, but loving more the Dad and Son relationship and interaction. I lost my Dad some 13 years ago but would have loved a project like this that we could have tackled together. Still, I can live that via proxy through watching you both. Great honest vids with no "show boating" keep it going , so looking forward to seeing you both drive it on the road.

This brings back memories, In the late 70's, early 80"s I had the 4.2L version, fantastic motors. With the initial starting taking several cranks to start try the following. I did this myself after leaving the Jag parked for 6 months. Over night remove the spark plugs, put a little Red X in each of the cylinders, and cover plug holes, the remainder can go in the petrol tank. Next morning crank the engine over WITHOUT the spark plugs in, just to blow out the residue. Refit the spark plugs and start the car.
Great vlog, looking forward to pt 3

Always an interesting and varied watch, very entertaining. XJ engines tended to get silt building up in the engine block particularly if the wrong antifreeze was used, might be worth flushing out when you're changing the thermostat. Looking forward to the next episode...

My favourite way of cleaning carbs is to cook them in a slow cooker of old-style antifreeze overnight. I usually strip off any rubber or plastic parts beforehand.

A bit late to this series but I am enjoying it.
Probable the one car I would have if I could would be the Series lll XJ. I am fascinated to be able to spend time looking at the Series ll. It is such a gorgeous looking car that really couldn't be improved on. However Jag sent one to Pinifarini who just kissed it in a few places and produced the Series lll, in my eyes, perfection, but it all depends on what was around when you grew up.
    Anyway, crack on.

Great to see the old Jag coming back to life.
Hopefully the coolant issue is just a thermostat or blocked radiator. Many years ago I checked an head gasket by putting a few drops of vanilla essence in the header tank, then ran the car and the smell of custard from the exhaust confirmed my fears !!!

I am entrenched in the series Jags and today drive a very late Japanese imported series 3 V12 and it is simply the best car on the road anywhere today . That said a bout 10 years ago I had given up finding a decent series 2 and whilst walking one day , chanced upon a series 2 SWB manual gearbox Jaguar xj6 and the guy sold it to me for £350 ! . Didnt require much and I drove it for a while but couldnt take to the long throw clutch and baulky gearbox but as a rarity it was quite novel !

Love your videos I think it's brilliant you and your dad enjoying it together. Can't wait to see how the jag goes on .looks really solid and genuine so that's a good starting point. I'd perhaps check the timing with a strobe aswell if you haven't already because there's the odd miss fire. Or it could be the cards which you are sorting soon but it wouldn't hurt to check anyway. Take care and keep up the good work.

It's best to modify the AED with a manual cable-operated choke kit from Burlen Carburettor Services.
Alternatively, I get rid of the AED and replace the HIF SU carbs, which you have in your car, with 2" HS8 SU carbs and install another connecting rod between the two cards to pull down the main jets for cold starting, like on HS6 carbs on Jaguar Mk2 240/340.
I take a connecting rod from a Rover 2000TC and adapt one of the connecting brackets linking the rod to the carb, as the configuration is the reverse between a Jaguar and a Rover.
This involves chopping one pat of the bracket off and rewelding it back on the opposite way round.
I also have to make a new link arm that connects the throttle lever to the carbs, as it now needs to have a dogleg in it to accommodate the new connecting rod linking the two carbs.
This gives much more control over the choke in cold conditions, and ensures the choke can be shut off completely so that the engine is not running rich when it's up to operating temperature.

Another great episode. Those submersible fuel pumps were a pain. The later set up was better. I think your dads right about the thermostat. I’d check that first for the cooling. If not I found my water pump was quite gunged up so that might be worth taking off at some point if the cooling doesn’t settle down. Seems to run too good for a blown head gasket. I’m curious to see why it’s stuck in neutral though. Anyway, great work! Looking forward to next episode!👍

Great vid as always from TH-cams No1 Father and son team! Making great progress wit the old girl. One question, you sorted the right hand fuel tank, what's the left hand one like? does that need replacement too? Regarding the carbs I think she will start so much better when you get the choke sorted. Lets hope the cooling issues are radiator, radiator cap, thermostat and not head gasket! Nice to see the interior light working so well! keep up the great work, all the best

Great epsiode Fella's , really enjoyed this. You are doing the jobs I now need to do on ours to get tit the next level - our is running great but need to sort out the NSR tank and pump and also the refurb the brake calipers ; dad and I took it out for a run hoping theyd free off but instead we boiled them - what an adventure that was getting it home!! I'm intrigued as to whether you will go witht he AED or opt for the manual conversion (manual comversion requires the base of the unit to be in situ as it sits on top of it ). One thing to watch on the cooling system which has caught both my Dad and I out (DAd has a 29k from new XJ12) is that the bottom of the header tank becomes porous due to corosion and isnt always an obvious factor in losing coolant, plus my 4.2 has done 88k miles and the core plugs have also deterioted which were also contributing to collant loss (obvious nthe top of the cylnder head but less obvious on the sides of the block as some of them are very obscured... keep going boys and looking forward to the next episode ! cheers stew

Setting up the firing order is one thing to be aware of, but you also need to be sure that the distributor has not been installed on the engine 180 degrees out of phase.
This can happen as it is easy to misjudge position the offset of the locating drive-lug cutout in the engine's distributor drive mechanism.
If the distributor drive shaft is 180 degrees out of phase then the XK engine will not start at all until it is corrected.

Why do they put the fuel pumps in the tanks? The series 1's were in the spare tyre well. So easy to get to. Modern is not always better. Once upon a time dependability through simplicity was the way to go. Today it's all about the speed, performance and the impression, ( V6 V8 & V12) whilst speed and performance is denied by law on our roads. So what is the motor Industries point. Blind faith and dreams sell cars today. Very little practicality and reality.
