Agreed! It's the motor's varying frequency resonating through the rigid polycarbonate blades. Very pronounced on that fan.

All the fans are great. I especially like the fans that when they are starting up make the 60hz AC frequency noise I find it weird. Specifically the older fans and the electrohome box fans.
Thank you! I like the sound too, often just referred to as the “start-up sound” among collectors. Most metal fans tend to have more pronounced start-up sounds as the motor frequencies resonate through the metal blades and frame better than plastic.
An excellent video and some great fans! The sounds are so specific too. It’s a shame that the Canadian versions had such restrictive grills. I need to showcase my collection- European, Japanese and US fans!

It sounds like your 1915s Westinghouse has a bad bearing or needs oil, you should check it out.
It’s an AC/DC motor fan with brushes and a commutator, which is the source of the noise.
damn all these old fans sound like they are about to take off lol hahaha
Haha true! Mainly due to their shallow-pitched metal blades whizzing around at very high speeds.

I definitely agree. I’d also prefer the no music edition from a viewer’s perspective. It seems like there’s a good audience that likes the music edition too, but I’ll keep producing the no music edition every year for folks like us who want to enjoy the fan sounds :)

Not just you! I agree, especially with a lot of the antiques. They run quite fast and often sound like lawn mowers or a swarm of bees.
