  • This is my hard working Land Rover Series 3 with a tiny 2.25 litre petrol recovering a Defender from the bush in 35 degree heat, then returning travelling to our complex via the highway. No issues for this old thing

    This is one of the best Landrover videos ever produced. Heaps of fun even when they're working hard.

    At 7:40 I thought you were going to show the old low-hi-range-on-the-move trick! Index finger pulling one lever, pinky pulling the other! Ideal for getting going when heavy if you perfect it ..

    Very well done and thanks 😊. Very sad this lovely land-rover 's are no more in manufacture and supply any more 😢 i new generation will never understand it ?unless you have one once? In lifetime 😢😢

    That was brilliant. I didn't realise the towing was so good on these old landies.

    The humble 2.25L with 7.1 compression will get you there..at its own pace! Mine has a crash 1st and second gear being a IIA ex Australian Army 109 and it makes it just that little bit more entertaining. I run Selecro freewheeling hubs I robbed off a parts vehicle for road use. (Not a standard fitment on military versions)

      78a67h Thanks mate ! As you can tell by my amateur filming and editing I'm new to this, but learning fast. To be honest I'm amazed how good they are, on paper they look terrible, in reality they are little tractors. One word, Simplicity. It's what makes them great. Next video being produced now, 4000km towing a 3.5 ton load , 6 days travel ( relax, it's only a 13 min video, not 6 days long..)

    I've got a 1982 Series 3 88" and I regularly use it for towing. I can only tow up to 2 tonnes, as my trailer has overrun brakes, but it easily pulls it. She quite happy sits at 50/55 MPH on the motorway when towing. A lot of people frown upon the old Series Land Rovers for towing, as on paper they're not very powerful. The other good thing about towing with a Series 3, is they are really stable, I never have problems with snaking or the trailer pushing the car around.

      Alexander Sutton Thanks for your comments ! I'm new to the TH-cam, Facebook things so bare with me as I learn to 'create ' these videos etc. I found out by accident how good a series 3 can be, our Discovery was off the road and we had to pick up a car, so Charlie was dragged into service. We couldn't believe how torquey that little engine is. We have a video being produced now, coming out next week. Charlie picks up a Dodge Dually' total load 3.5 ton , total distance 4000km over 6 days. EPIC !!

    You may have to measure 0-60 time with a sundial, but the old Series Landrovers are humble little cans of whoopass. Particularly the diesels -- they're incredibly slow but in low range the amount of usable torque they produce is enough to pull over a skyscaper. The V8 Defenders may have more horsepower but they are far, far less anvil-like.

    hi mate it's nice to see a series 3 alive and well in Australia I've got a series 3 1972 which are in the middle of restoring and basically it's the rear bulkheads rotted out and parts of the chassis needs a bit of welding but hey Happy Land Rovering from mark in Cornwall uk

      Thanks Mark . After some of our trips its actually surprising our S3 still lives. We are yet to do a desert crossing, cant't wait for that. Australia is the holy grail of challenges. We plan on doing a big one soon , its called the Canning Stock route. 1900km unsupported. we will be carrying 500 litres of fuel on board and doing it as a single vehicle expedition. Why ? simple, everyone tells me I can't do it. Good to hear you are keeping yours alive and getting it ready for the road again.

    These old series landrovers are super strong but be warned if you have free wheeling hubs disconnected and you use low box you will strip the splines on your halfshafts In no time trust me I’ve done it myself after not listening to my farther 😂

    In most of Europe we use over run brakes. They are passive and self balancing.

    Hello again, I very much would appreciate some more details on the towing system. I understand that the brake force is controlled by the black box on the dash. Apart from applying manually, how is the braking force built up?

    • @PillSharks
      @PillSharks 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Wilson in the 15 years I've owned mine it's covered 270000 miles with only one break down, that was the clutch friction plate exploding.
      To many haters out there who insist on giving the defender a bad name!

    What year is Charlie?, I have a 1977 SWB that I drove from the Sunshine Coast to Margaret River in 2015, and back again in 2017, all up around 13,000 klm. Slow going but got me there.

      4x4fun oz I'm pretty sure the Defender is a 2000 model , and Charlie is a 76 . Many see the Defender as being old, yet Charlie is 24 years older

  • @oliwoodhead3126
    @oliwoodhead3126 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video!! Can I ask, how did you strap the defender around the axles? I always thought straps around the axles would be good but the brake lines are in the way.

    Have you an overdrive in Charlie?

    • @nakedoffroad8518
      @nakedoffroad8518  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Air Pics NI Charlie's engine and drive line is completely standard. No overdrive or anything thing modified other than hardened valve seats in the engine so I can run unleaded fuel without additives. In these heavy use situations an overdrive wouldn't handle the load, or be used at all to be honest. They are ok in unloaded, light weight highway running , but Charlie is a hard working beast. We will be making a desert crossing video soon, in full expedition gear and loaded with 300 litres of fuel Charlie weighs in at 3 tons

    Your title states bush towing. I was expecting some serious off road towing or recovery and not a 100 yards off of the highway. Other than that I love the old Landy doing what it was built to do.
