    Such a big trip for a little old Landy! Hopefully charlie wasn't too tired after that big run and has another 40 years to live. Cowra NSW is my hometown so I hope it treated you well. I have a an old Dodge D5N and quite a few old landys back there aswell.
    It's good to see people still putting these vehicles to the test!
    Best of luck, James K

    Hello and thanks for the vid. In Europe, Land Rover recommends a max towing load of 2tons. Besides this, there are a few Series 3 road legal with a higher capacity, some eben 3.5 to total trailer mass . But you need a certification of a technical control authority ( TÜV,Dekra,) , MOT in UK. The easiest way to convice the engineer, a Series Land Rover can tow 3.5 ton on the hitch, is a lettre from Land Rover, stating this as possible. Nowadays, they would not do you this favour - I guess. How is this in Aussie?

      A Landrover series3 can tow 4.5 tonnes
      if it has electronic braking system including breakaway safety.... something like that.

    I have seen many LR owners do the gearbox x-member modification, but why did you have to do it 3 days before the trip? Did you plan to have your gearbox out in the duration?

    Cylinder leaks after 6 months? Did it come out of a blue box? (Britpart) ... i go for bearmach and all makes parts as they are better. It is just what you can get i guess, bring spare fluid and seal kids.

      Philip Douglas -We are just as surprised. The funny thing is we still use Charlie daily with the trailer on, last trip was 500km . The exhaust snapped off at the manifold 50 km from home, damn that was noisy . But... we always get home

      Naked Off Road I'm asking all this because I am in the proces of rebuidling my '70 2.25 petrol and now I'm starting to wonder what the fuel economy will be like, since I don't intend shutting the damn thing off once I finally finish it :) My '68 109 2.25 diesel was pretty decent in that aspect and I don't know what to expect from petrol, and since this is an engine swap, I didn't really drive the petrol yet and internet isn't much helpful either. I opted not to put valve seat inserts though since it would be pretty expensive thing to do now and I already poured alot of my student budget into it. One more question though, what carb do you use? I'm assumming you havr weber since it's known to reduce fuel consumption (but also power), unlike my Zenith wich is probably the thirstiest.

    • @nakedoffroad8518
      @nakedoffroad8518  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pyle Yes, I'm using a Weber. Economy wasn't the reason though. It came down to reliability. I couldn't get the zenith to stop flooding , and the replacement zenith I bought was a crappy Chinese copy. Weber was the only quality bolt on version I could get. However, I'm buying an idle jet shut of solenoid for it as it can run on a little when hot. It's an optional extra I recommend . I also run a massive after market Ryco fuel filter , it's a big one with a removable cartridge. Keeps the carb clean and functioning. Also necessary since my S3 has 3 fuel tanks . I recommend chucking the factory mechanical fuel pump too. They can be a pain in the ass. Particularly since the new ones all all Chinese crap. I have an electric rotary pump under the drivers seat, next to the factory tank. I carry a spare pump too, just to be sure . Next week I will be posting a bit of an " explainer" about my old thing . One thing I will say though, when it's all fixed up and done right it will be a VERY reliable old truck.

    • @PyleHD
      @PyleHD 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Naked Off Road Thank you so much for all the info, the electric fuel pump seems like a great idea, and not too expensive either. I'm looking forward to the video, please make it as detailed as possible

  • @PyleHD
    @PyleHD 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing that made me click the video in the first place, what was the average MPG during the trip? Great video, was a little disapointed you didn't mention it in the video

    • @nakedoffroad8518
      @nakedoffroad8518  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pyle we didn't really keep close tabs on it. Towing with an old thing means theirs plenty to look out for as it is, however, from other towing we do with it it seems to be around 16 litres a 100 fully loaded

    • @PyleHD
      @PyleHD 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Naked Off Road 16 a 100 fully while towing? Thats great actually. I assume it was fourth gear all the time, does it have overdrive?

    • @nakedoffroad8518
      @nakedoffroad8518  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pyle We use forth on the highway , but any incline, even a small one requires lower gears. No overdrive. Their is no point when towing as it wouldn't be used. The overdrives are also not recommended for hard working vehicles as they get hot and often fail under severe load. The driveline of my old S3 is the same spec it was in '76, other than hardened valve seats to run unleaded fuel.
