I've been searching for this for ages. I remember seeing this when it first aired (It was presented by Damon Albarn form Blur - introducing all the Britpop bands). At the time, I hadn't even heard of Gene but after I saw this I became a huge fan and I continue to be a huge fan now. An amazing band who are sorely missed. Thanks for the upload.
One of the greatest songs of the 90's. Unfair that Martin Rossiter got chants of "Morrissey! Morrissey!" at earlier gigs. Nobody chanted at Liam n Noel "Beatles! Stones! T-Rex! The Jam! or Ian Brown! at Liam. There was snobbery towards Gene and OCScene for sounding retro but not at Oasis or Suede for doing the same.
Same thing happened at 97 performance in Toronto when the were touring Drawn to the deep end, moz chant by 1 clown. Got to meet Martin as we were in a line to come in, he came out to have a smoke and talked and signed my ticket. Gene didn't sound like smiths, and they are my all-time favorite band along with Gene and stone roses
Gene were 20x OCS, in my opinion. Virtually peerless in that crazy Britpop period, not noticeably derivative unlike most. I saw them 3 times and was blown away each time.
The chorus/change is as aching & heartbreaking as a Phil Spector production - Gene you should be very proud of this one.....about as gorgeous as gorgeous gets in my not so humble opinion.....
Gene were Gene ,a brilliant indie band....The Smiths were a great band who had Morrisey as their lead singer but imo the band were bigger than the lead singer... But Gene were the sum of all their parts...thats what made them so good
Brilliant song, brilliant band. Olympian is a superb album but I also like Drawn to the deep end. Definitely have their own sound and they were a fantastic live band. Lyrically very good as well.
Martin now runs the Access to Music Studios in Brighton, which offer Creative Music Producer and Performing Musician courses up to the entry level for university. A great band in the day.
Totally agree with what some have said here. I was thinking that Gene got a lot of stick in the mid-90's for being Smiths copyists. Totally unfair accusation when they were such a great band. Look at Oasis-they sounded like the Beatles, Stones, Jam & Roses and yet got high praise. Felt sorry for Gene, they should've been bigger. Fantastic band.
i dont compare gene to the smiths both were quite different in my opinion.london can you wait is one of my favourite songs so is i know its over by the smiths and it all depends on what my ears want to hear for me to decide which ones better.the best song is the one im listening to at that time.some days i like this one and some days i like that one.
Losing your soul mate whether best mate and/or lover does a number(s) on you. Rodney on the ROQ at 106.fm in LA really championed them back when they were together. For some unlucky reason, they never got properly pushed enough.
Anyone remember the appearance they put in on Mark and Lard when Radcliffe/Riley had the late night slot on R1 back in the 90s - Speak to me someone and they chastised Martin for smoking when he was putshing his vocals to the absolute limit! Best radio show bar none !
I never got the feeling that Gene were actively trying to rip-off the Smiths. The influence is certainly there, but there are a lot of bands that were influenced by groups like the Cure, the Smiths, yet went on to develop their own style. I just think Gene never got that big break that would have made them really famous outside the UK, which is a pity because I always thought they were brilliant. Songs like 'I Can't Help Myself' et al. are beautiful songs that just didn't get enough airplay.
if they had a different singer/voice they would still would be great, i love this era of music, they emphasized the tag indie in my opinion they were right in the middle of it and what indie shoudve sounded like. the best band of the 90s in this catergory.
Where they really compared to The Smiths? I've only heard this of theirs but it sounds nothing like The Smiths, the guitar overdrive, there's no Marr-like riff... The only thing that's like them its his voice, which sound incredibly alike yo Morrissey's. If anything they sound way more like Morrissey's solo stuff than The Smiths.
I think they would have been more successful if they had good marketing & had worked with a stylist. Martin especially (but the band's look overall) doesn't reflect the songs. It's hard to reconcile that. I bought the CDs when they came out, but I didn't know what they looked like. If I had seen him in flannel with yuppie trousers in an ad on NME or something, I'd be unimpressed. Compare that to Brett Anderson, Jarvis Cocker, etc.. There's your answer.
+Jo101214 ....you are so wrong...The Smiths....3, maybe 4 good songs, tops...and a whole career of fawning critics and dullards crawling after them. Totally overrated.Gene? Pure class. So... - that's why.
+Noel Johnson "...only 3,4 good songs ..." I guess this means you have only listened to 3-4 Smiths' songs. Don't get me wrong, Gene were a nice band. I quite like them. But the Smiths were one of the greaterst if not THE greatest band of all time. There is just no contest here.
+Jo101214 No, sir...60+ Smiths songs in iTunes library...only 4 of any long-term value...Gene were not the greatest band ever, I never claimed that...but - by a long chalk - the Smiths certainly weren't either....Gene had ore songs that endure, I stand by that.......
+Noel Johnson Like the Smiths didn't have songs that endured the test of time... Anyway I guess we'll never agree on this. Still it was nice to have a conversation on here without it having to become an uncivil one.
This is a masterpiece and deserves so much more attention than it got.
Great song and the change is amazing
They were very good, a very underrated band in the brilliant brit pop era🎉
I saw Gene so many times, they were always brilliant. Their albums are still some of my favourites. Totally underrated band.
Very true Cat!

Olympian is such a GREAT album.
Such a great song Steve's guitar playing is heartbreakingly beautiful on this track
懐かしい、渋谷に初来日見に行来ました。
I went to see gene when I was 16 years old and loved it so much with my first boyfriend Richard.
Now you're watching it on youtube with your 10th boyfriend? 💀

So underrated

Morons will yell moronic things. Rossiter is in a class of his own, for sure .)
Were the '90s that bad then?
The chorus/change is as aching & heartbreaking as a Phil Spector production - Gene you should be very proud of this one.....about as gorgeous as gorgeous gets in my not so humble opinion.....
Martin has such a beautiful tone to his voice his solo work is stunning too
Greatest band of the 90s and beyond.
i was barely 20 when i heard Gene back in 96 and i thought they were awesome! thanks for posting.
Should have countless millions of views
Gene were Gene ,a brilliant indie band....The Smiths were a great band who had Morrisey as their lead singer but imo the band were bigger than the lead singer...
But Gene were the sum of all their parts...thats what made them so good
I love The Smiths. Gene is another story. A great and only one. Don't compare apples with pears... Pleeeeze....
Just one of their great tracks. Saw them live twice in the 90s. Shamefully underrated.
so underrated. Superb band
Just wonderful . . .

hey well said friend
Beautiful!
Utterly brilliant!
The Film Face fetched me here 👌
great album, very sensible
Pure genius, no Moz comparison, please.
Great band Gene
I remember recording brit pop now on VHS, Oasis weren’t on it as Blur didn’t like Liam. It was all part of the British independent movement.
So did I lol Damon in that ridiculous knickerbocker suit 🙈
great band
Still waiting on that solo album Martin....
I was having the time of my life so why did you have to die,i'm lost again.Anyone else singing these lyrics?
Losing your soul mate whether best mate and/or lover does a number(s) on you. Rodney on the ROQ at 106.fm in LA really championed them back when they were together. For some unlucky reason, they never got properly pushed enough.
Right here
23 years later. I still have them on my wall. My favorite band.
'I was having the time of my life so why did you have to die'

Radcliffe had a show on Monday nights called "out on blue six" best programme ever. I wish I could find recordings of it somewhere...
THIS IS THE SMOOTH RUNNING SONG BEING FROM WOLVERHAMPTON

Good ol' times when it was possible to play only 3 instruments and come up with a great song.
better than the recorded version imho
great -sounds like smiths
There's no doubt this sounds like the Smiths but I loved the Smiths and I liked Gene too, the copyist tag never bothered me.
The Smiths.
oh no, darling. I'd better keep listening Morrissey
sounds like gene to me like. comparisons oft deflect away from the beauty of presented.
Definitely sounds like the Smiths, but still a good song.
STEVE MASON IS GOD!!
Check shirts and sideburns. Yep it's 1995.

very missed band
Gene sounds nothing like the smiths
If only the band themselves wanted to emulate smiths... thanks god they failed at that.
Gene were better than The Smiths by a country mile...
Worst. Opinion. Ever.
