    Thanks for the video. Great work. I just shot a feature film on the S5. I shot into the Ninja V so I was getting 5.9k, Full Frame, 422, 12 bit, Prores RAW. Mind blowing!!!!!!!! The image is poetry. I got an open box deal for $1,400. (they are even cheaper now because of the new MK II). My Ninja cost me 400 bucks. So, for about 2,000 I was getting and image you would need to spend 20 to 50k on a Red or an Arri to even get close to. I have shot both of those cameras. I prefer the S5 sensor, body size and functionality. I have never used auto focus. Happily the S5 MKII will stop people complaining about auto focus. I prefer to tell the camera where I want the focus to be. That seems fundamental to getting great images. The S5 is the single best deal out there. The S5MKII "X" might be worth the upgrade for the enhanced IBIS and the backup/redundancy of the internal codecs, but I hope they don't mess with the sensor, it is incredible at 5.9k RAW. I came from GH4 and GH5's, but full frame is another planet, just wonderful. The only drawbacks are rolling shutter, no fast panning for action sequences, and you will burn through micro HDMI cables on a tough shoot unless you cable clamp them. Apart from that I didn't have to think once about the camera, it just delivered 5.9k RAW all day long and didn't miss a beat. That leaves you to think about nothing else but the creative. Important point for your viewers: "The cinematic look" DOES NOT HAPPEN IN THE CAMERA. You can point an iPhone at a well composed, lit and well dressed scene, and it will look great. The "cinematic look" is what is going on in front of the lens: lights, make up, costume, colors, shapes. If you point a 100k Arri at a bag of laundry all you are going to see is a bag of laundry. That Arri camera is not going to make a bag of laundry look like Angelina Jolie.

      Also that s5iix USB recording, so dual to ninja SSD and USBC SSD I'm guessing . This is a great write up, where in the world are you?

    • @charliemcgrain
      @charliemcgrain ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robmulally Yep, if you are shooting indi you love some easy to get redundancy. Swapping the SSD's on and off the Ninja was so fast and easy, but nice to have something going on internally just in case. Same with the new IBIS, just gives you that extra bit of help in case the Ronan takes a dive. I am an Irish filmmaker currently living in LA. You are a Mulally. haha. Good Irish stock. Proper bunch of pirates! (no offense) Where are you located? Sounds like you might be down under?

    Thanks Rob, I learned a lot from this video. I'm a graphic designer who has been creating content for social media for the last 6 years. I shoot with a Nikon D750, and need to now upgrade my camera. I've held off on the Z cameras because they couldn't backup video. I never considered Panasonic because of the bad publicity over their AF, but I shoot from behind the camera and rarely do tracking shots. I always prefer to shoot at a particular focal plane if that makes sense. Also Im now asked to shoot vertical far more and I think the S5 is better at this than the Z or A73 etc.
    Also that kit lens would cover 90% of what I do - Id only need a nifty 50 and im covered.

    I have an S1H and a GH5, I love nearly everything about them, the image quality is the best BUT... I am thinking about walking away from Lumix because of the autofocus system. Other brands the dynamic range isn’t quite there (canon) or the colors are a little rough (Sony) but an out of focus shot is an out of focus shot. Sometimes it isn’t particularly easy to re-do something, I have been doing generational documentaries where I am interviewing someone, I have one cam on me and one cam on the person I am interviewing, I have gone back to edit them and either myself or the subject of the interview is out of focus, the lumix camera is just out in the weeds focusing on literally nothing. The footage is ruined and I don’t have the budget right now to have a camera operator to monitor what’s happening, I need to be able to rely on the autofocus more. So right now my project is stopped because I really can’t find a workaround and these people I interview are old, they have a hard enough time sitting for a 30 minute to an hour interview and when they tell you a story from their childhood where their face lights up or they get emotional, you can’t get those reactions or expressions again tomorrow asking the same questions you have to get it the first time through. So again I think nearly everything about the lumix cameras are perfect, I love the image quality, the files, the photo capabilities, ergonomics, battery life, screen and viewfinder, lenses, the whole thing, but the autofocus just destroys the whole system for me. I hope that makes sense, I don’t mean to bash Lumix as I am invested in their cameras and lenses, and it may work well in certain scenarios but for me it’s a heartbreaking autofocus systems, it works ok with stills if the light is good but even with stills sometimes they are a little soft, I have no idea what it tried to focus on.

    • @markshirley01
      @markshirley01 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why dont you lock your focal plane in. I never use AF on a interview etc.

    • @alexsystems2001
      @alexsystems2001 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@markshirley01 thank you for the reply, I have tried that but that works with my wide angle at a closed aperture so the depth of field isn’t very shallow but when you shallow up the dof and an old person starts slouching inward or leans inward out of the focal plane and they stay that way, or they are energetic and leaning in to begin with then as the interview goes on they lean back they tend to go out of the focal plane. The open dof works when they aren’t embarrassed of the clutter in their house or there isn’t a busy background but it doesn’t work in every occasion. Also some people don’t want a lot of lighting so you gotta open the aperture up a little too. I agree it’s easier with people who are used to sitting more still and stuff locking it off sounds great. Basically, again I love everything about the camera but to have to babysit it just for the autofocus is really limiting, it’s a tool that other brands have and they work somewhat reliably with the other brands but I just can’t fully rely on it on these cameras. Plus, although the S1H doesn’t do as much pulsing in the background as the GH5, it’s still there to some degree and when you do open up the aperture on the S1H you really notice the pulsing in the bokeh. Basically, after having worked with it for some bit, I am totally satisfied except for the autofocus, and it is making my consider moving in the direction of another brand. I hope that is understandable and you did welcome comments, I don’t mean to be Mr Negative, they are really robust well built cameras and beautiful lenses, I would call it the perfect camera if it had reliable autofocus.

      Are you relying on the face tracking or are you setting a focal point on where the subject is sitting? I can imagine that's extremely frustrating. I don't think I would trust AF on any system unmonitored for a once in a lifetime shot like that/those especially indoors. Id probably be going for the locked focal plane and keeping an eye on the subject , but I totally understand everything you are saying balancing all the elements. If I were you I would at least hook up your phone remotely as a monitor(Wifi) or laptop, and/or have a cheap HDMI monitor to keep an eye on it.

    • @mirceablue
      @mirceablue 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you really need autofocus use:
      Speed: 0 and Sensitivity: -2 to eliminate pulsing.
      Activate AF -Near.
      Use point focus not face tracking.
      Shoot in 30 fps.
      Close down aperture F. 4 - 5.6.
      Use light on the subject shadow on the background (grids on modifiers ) .

    Good video, another s5 owner! Well don't rely too much on on autofocus then do mostly timelapses. Wish they would go to another (autofocus) system though. Makes it hard to use as a vlogging camera (bit on the heavy side for that, still use my gopros, and much better video stabilization for that). But looking forward to using it for photography. Just learned ramped timelapse with lrtimelapse, next step is star-trail timelapses. Still super pleased with it, my last proper camera was a Mamiya 645 super way back in the day. And before that a Canon t90...so a long time ago.

I mostly shoot some portraits, landscape, short videos for small businesses, event highlights (before the pandemic), interviews. The GH5 and the G9 are great options as well, but I think the S5 can combine the features of both pretty well. So you can turn night mode on the rear screen or the LVF and control it seperately. So if you set the colour profile to BNW you can use the LVF in BNW and the monitor in RED. Do you know how to use a remote shutter release with this camera? When I use the remote jack on side of camera, the only option is for it to trigger the record button. Any work around with this do you know? thanks. Subscribed!

      May not be ideal but you can use the app. Ive never needed a trigger for it as I've been using the in built intervelometer for time-lapse. I'm assuming you need to do bulb exposures? How many black stripes does your jack have ?

Also seems to get really muddy just past iso 6400 and above what is the sweet spot of iso? Thanks

      @@HedgeHogTail_ Well you might be able to rent them and see how you like both. Maybe one for a few days the other for a few days see how you like the usability and interface etc. Maybe create two films one with each camera. Then after that you might decide to buy one or the other or neither :-) I feel more creative with Lumix when filming but I have less lenses to pick from , the biggest commitment is really lenses. The real advantage going with the more popular camera is if you want to sell something there are usually more buyers etc. I hope this helps keep me updated on what you decide.
