It confuses me, they are artist, they have knowledge to make highly detailed models, textures, meaning they had to practice for years... And they make the ugliest designs and think "people will love this and think it is bad ass"
They're merely workers, the management asks to make an ugly design on purpose, then they will do it because that's what keeps paying the bills. Yet if some do disagree and challenge the idea, guess what, nobody dares to disagree with their bosses since everyone in the building is on board with what keeps the investors happy. It's all about the money man, appealing the current trends and the new generation.

People wouldn't play Morrowind because it doesn't have maps? Morrowind very much has in-game maps though? There's no fast travel selection on those maps, but 100% there is both the world map and the local map in the game. The local map can even be moved, resized, and locked in place to function like a minimap other games have with no mods needed.

The game does have fast travel to some locations around the map that you pay for and what not, only hard part about morrowind is learning the mechanics of game but once you start going, your in for a fun time
There's an old mod called "Sauron's Abode" where you can find a gem that teleports you to numerous places in the game.

@@dragondude9637 I think I've actually used something similar at some point, even at a time when I knew the entire fast travel network by heart. It just eventually becomes such a chore to recall yourself to one of the hubs to start the process of fast traveling to the closest point to where you want to be, then cast a high level jump or athletics or something to get the rest of the way in a single leap. Though eventually even that can be shortcut into just a single leap from anywhere on the island to anywhere else on the island. Which, at that point, using a device to teleport you in a single loading screen is a simple convenience over essentially going through the multiple loading screens that leaping around the island causes.
I think they mean all the shops and npcs highlighted on maps.
The least they could do was make Mrs. Freeze attractive so people would be less upset about it. Killer Frost would've been a way better choice.
But considering what they've done, maybe it's for the better they ruin they're own original character.
I bet they intentionally made Mrs. Freeze as unattractive as possible, for whatever bizarre political reason.

The issue with Morrowind isn't a lack of quest markers. The journal is hot garbage after a dozen entries. God help you if you leave the game for a week too.

Completely disagree with the guys about game direction. No, you don't need players being hand-held through everything - but you also don't want quests or objectives so vague that you would probably give up before ever finding it.
Quests and objectives were not vague in Morrowind, they were quite detailed in their description. The problem is that nowadays most RPGs go in the other extreme, they hold your hand far too much and it's obnoxious. In games about exploration a compass and quest markers are the absolute worst things it can have.
Yeah, some games are just "hey, come and spend 30-90 minutes examining every inch of our map, so you will not miss very important hidden detail that you will definitely need several hours later"
You're old. If you don't have a yellow dot on the screen and a checkbox, it ain't happening. Modern gaming. And your dialogue had to be skippable.
Elden Ring doesn't really give direction to players and lets players explore and get lost and find stuff and AJS loves that game but, hey Morrowind is the problem.
And if we being completely fair here...most games give players the option to turn off maps and other HUD elements to be more immersive. It's just the vast majority of people actually don't want to play that way.

The thing about morrowind is that its kinda small. The fog makes it less obvious, but it's relatively small world size makes it possible to find things if asked. Modern RPGs have finally "achieved" the massive scales some folks have been clambering for, but a tradeoff is that the games end up being designed with more handrails since they are afraid of you getting lost and making no progress
I think the best way to do a game that doesn't hold your hand completely is baldur's gate 3. Does it help you? Yeah what does it throw you to the wolves? No. And that game did really well.
Are you high? That game completely throws you to the wolves because the devs enjoy trolling the player. If you go into it not knowing anything about DND or its rules, you will not have an easy go of it. The entire mentality around DND is the GM figuring out how to break their players the most. People wank off BG3 too much.

@@jase276It really doesn't. Other than having dice rolls, the game isn't that different than any other turn based rpg. The abilities and spells are from dnd, but you can just read their descriptions, which is what you would be doing if they weren't based on dnd.
Honestly Divinity 2 was much more complicated and honestly did for the player to the wolves I think baldur's gate is one of the better starting RPGs. Because honestly if you suck you can just put it to a little difficulty where in Divinity 2 it was exceptional easy not only get lost but to simply build an improper character
I disable the compass and objective markers in all the games I can. It is the best thing you can do. You no longer run after an indicator, you actually feel like you're there, learning the world.

Ok, that Mrs. Freeze design is absolutely terrible but that suddenly gave me a flashback of watching the Gotham Girls animated show a decade or so ago. The big twisty spoiler for the third season villain was Nora's sister Dora and her design was sorta like Suicide Squad Nora albeit not as the... Speak to Your Manager type. And man, it's been a long time since I watched Gotham Girls.
6:15 i literally hate the compass with a burning passion because it makes my eyes gravitate to the top of the screen at all times. I 100% miss figuring out the quests from journal updates etc and exploring the world. The only reason Morrowind remake would fail is cause you would fail at remaking it
The compass is fine, its the damn GPS tracking that kills it for me. Rather than immersing yourself in the world, learning its layout, discovering and utilizing landmarks to navigate, as you say, you're focused on a singular icon on the screen.

You do know a map is in Morrowind right? You can also make it stay on screen if you click on the top right corner and adjust it's size.

Nora Fries was shown in the Arkham series, both in Arkham Knight and Arkham Asylum. She really changed her style for sure.
I would've gotten Exo-Primal IF....it released free to play, cause we saw that they were focusing on monetization even before the game came out.
Most of its players were because of game pass , it was rubbish you didn't miss anything
I would've gotten it IF they didn't force PVP into it. I still play L4D to this day, I love me a really good wave shooter with a group. I played the open betas for Exoprimal and the 10 man PVE matches were amazingly fun.
I wish it was just an actual game. Like EDF. Would be awesome. Mobile games die and it's just a waste of time and money. It's the wrong demographic to cater to.

Gamers want direction is false. BOTW was pretty open ended, and never held hand. Also, there was Outward on PC and also sold very well. It's devs that don't have ideas and balls, not the gamers.
It's not entirely false. There are times where I don't want to think at all and would rather have a direction or have the game tell me EXACTLY what to do. Do I want that all the time? Nah not really but if it's one of those days then it's great.

Part of the problem with a bethesda gane having no quest/world guidance is how buggy and broken their games are. It'd be hard knowing if you aren't doing the quest right/missed something or if the game is just broken. The game world also needs to feel fun to explore, and if Starfield is anything to go by based on their current idea of exploration, then I'd hate not knowing where to go.

I'm one of those old gamers who loves and misses the "no hand-holding" style from Morrowind. Wish they'd make a comeback, but sadly don't see that happening except with indie games nowadays.
I've been yelling this for us older heads. We are from the era of, the joy in gaming, was literally figuring it out. We had games that had half the world sizes, that felt twice as vast because there was so much you could do, that you didn't know.
We used to spend ages at the lunch table or practice and talk about different experiences I m games. Even down to games like OOT and Majoras Mask. We are still discovering things today, because the game didn't hold our hands.
Critical thinking is required for immersion, and when it's lost, so goes the concept. Games are so linear today, it feels like we've played them all, halfway through
Gaming has become much more mainstrea, attracting many more people - it makes sense to streamline them and make them "easier". Back then the hardcore nerds were spending hours to get past a level that sends you back to the start every time you die - nowadays we have casual people who just wanna play an hour or two after work and they want some kind of reward or feeling of progression.
While I do miss some things about the "old times", it does make sense.
@OnionTheBat it didn't take nerdss hundreds of hours to clear oblivion, Zelda, morrowind, Megamall, pokemon etc. But these games did not hold your hand and the experience was left up to the player, but they had a complete game.
Today they nickel and dime their way to complete games, and pay to wain, or gold your hand through the game.
Making good games that don't hold your hand ≠ easier
It means that the game has to be .ore complete in order to teach the player concepts, it otherwise would forsake gameplay and gametime to explain.
I encourage you to look up Sequilitus by Egoraptor. He touched on this more than a decade ago, to drove the point home, and it's insane the amount of things he foresaw coming in the industry, as games have traded easier for hand holding.

Just to clarify. In World of Tanks you spend ingame currency that you earn on ammunition. Affordable for anyone as long as you don't suck massively at the game.
However, there is more expensive ammunition that costs even more ingame currency to buy. This more expensive ammo generally gives higher armor penetration values, and are generally better for that reason.
You therefore don't need to spend real money to buy the better ammunition, because you also buy it with the currency that you earn. However, using premium features like a premium account does increase your currency income and therefore makes it easier to afford the more expensive ammunition. Which is still fairly pay to win in my opinion. But it's not as outrageous as simply locking it behind real life money.

My problem with the "no compass no map" point is that I think is it off the mark.
Access to a compass and map - even if only as an unlockable or in game item - is ultimately a quality of life feature to me; I can make my own map as I play, I could make my own sense of the cardinal directions, having those available in the game aren't features that lessen the experience for me.
Features that *do* lessen the experience for me however are automatic questmarkers and NPCs or notifications that quite forcefully try to push me in a certain direction or playstyle.
I like the balance that the Elder Scrolls 2 Daggerfall struck where you can make your own markers on the map, or at the least often don't know the location of points of interest without first finding them or investigating their location.
The main quests and sidequests there are also non-intrusive, you often get a letter from someone or are referred to them contextually when a quest is available and you often don't have to go and do it immediately.
Morrowind will always succeed in my heart 🥺
I believe another reason games have location markers and quests markers is because a lot of dialoge isnt specific enough to point you correctly and/or not all NPC's you talk to can help you navigate correctly to your quest
You talk about dialogue as if it were a store-bought good. Writers and devs have the freedom to make the dialogue as specific as they want in order to guide the player to a location. It doesn’t even have to be good. They don’t do that because they don’t want to, and would rather fill the map with flashy markers.

Exoprimal should’ve been given more time to make sure the gameplay loop was solid early on instead of 20hrs in. I hope they re-release a better version or they see the potential in a sequel.

I known Ubisoft games are notorious for having a cluttered UI, but all their games are very consistent with how customizable the HUD is, even going back to AC Brotherhood. If you leave that stuff on, you only have yourself to blame.
It's also funny because I bet Alex would complain about getting lost in ps2 games like Silent Hill 2 & 3 or Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3.
I love that Capcom is open to trying new ideas, but unfortunately Exoprimal was a really big miss because people have been asking for Dino Crisis for YEARS and Exoprimal seemed tone deaf in light of that. If Exoprimal was instead used as the multiplayer aspect to a new Dino Crisis, I bet it would've been wildly more successful.

Unfortunately gamers 25 and under come from a different generation of games, and won't be able to mesh well with some older concepts. They built different. Doesn't really mean they are brain dead just because they don't like games like morrowind

Having just replayed Morrowind in the last few weeks (As id never actually played through Tribunal) Id say its biggest flaw is to many escort quests and the AI just gets stuck or is slow. Its crazy how much bigger all the cities and even little fishing villages feel conpared to Skyrim.

They didn’t really say anything about the new game changing course from VIII and the remakes.
I think the solution for the problem discussed as of 5:29 is simple. Give players an option to toggle quest markers on or off. And why not make a compass or a minimap optional too? Programming one or several toggle options is super easy, barely an inconvenience. I mean, making it so that everyone may become a fan of your game is tight!
