Ops...😅 the word you hear in Montalbano and that you are talking about is a swear word, very common in Sicily... its meaning is completely different!! That word (always starting with "m") is a swear word that is usually used to make an exclamation. It is the gross way to say "penis" 😂
In this way, if you liked something but you were not excited about it, better to say "boh, non male!". If you say "mica male!" you mean that you are surprised because you expected something not so good, but it was. 😉
