Thank you SO MUCH for OVER 30,000 views! This is a new channel so it means a lot to me. I hope some of you will subscribe and stick around for more videos on Italian and English. And also other random stuff once I have enough subscribers who actually care about my life 😁 Anyway, I've been getting a lot of the same questions on this video so I just wanted to direct you to part 2 of this video where I answer a lot of questions. If that doesn't help, feel free to come back and I'd be happy to answer any further questions you have 😊 th-cam.com/video/d3ER4p2CU9E/w-d-xo.html 💛💛💛
This maybe the best video on this that I have ever watched. I've been learning Spanish for awhile, and now I feel confident that I will finally learn the rolling "r".
I’m sorry your family does that. I’m working on learning Spanish. I can kind of do it (from singing lessons; it’s an air exercise) but it feels... exaggerated and not at all... natural, so I kind of chicken out. I try to plan around using it, actually. 😂 “Can I say this another way so I don’t need to use the double R?” I really love the language, so I’m really trying!!! 😅
Marina McKenzie I’m an Italian girl who couldn’t roll her R for years until 2012/2013 or something by December 2015 I could do it . I’m almost 16 years old now
@@hikikomoriarty To my limited knowledge, it was more common in Classical Latin pronunciation, and not as much in the Ecclesiastical Latin commonly used in Churches. There are ancient Latin writings where people described the rolling of Rs in various ways. Not entirely sure as to the precise rules of when you do and don’t roll them, though I know it seems to be more common when it precedes a consonant, like in “hortus”
@@michaeltnk1135 But it doesn't mean we're actually saying it, unless you're British. I've heard from many foreigners stating that the way we pronounce the "T" in butter, party, etc(even this here) sounds exactly like the "R" in their native language.
@@lukeporras1288 I used this method. The part I used was practicing the Sera and Veirro or however u spell it with the gap, after a while, it starts the vibration you want and now I can roll my Rs and ive been only practicing for 30 minutes.
This video made me so pissed at all the videos that sucked at teaching how to do this in comparison to this. She somehow tricked me into rollin my fuckin Rs when I thought I wasn’t physically capable. Fantastic.
same I'm so angry but happy but I also wanna cry, I can't believe this worked. I legit was told I was tongue tied as a kid and therefore physically incapable of rolling my R's yet here I am like what the actual fuck
Actually saying “bet ah” sounds closer to her example “sera” than “better” “Betta/sera” Unless you’re saying it with a British accent like she said in the video.
Yeah and English people say a hard t different from the American one, so it doesn’t really work, but I just pretended to do an American accent and this actually worked- I still struggle with the double r but I’ve been speaking Italian about 2 and a half weeks and I’ve really gotten the hang of the single r sound!
MrNorthernSol try being Cumbrian and using both the schwa and the glottal stop when saying “better”. “Be...uh” with a glottal stop in the middle will never be close to an R
to everyone who feels bad about not being able to pronounce rr or r: don’t sweat it! when i was born, my parents couldn’t speak english so i learned spanish as my first language. it took until i was around 10 years old to be able to roll my r and it happened out of nowhere. story aside, even native speakers struggle with it, so don’t feel bad! ¡you’ve got this! :)
Aliyah smith Woot for Spanish learners! I’m going to add a second soon, but I’m not sure which. It’s been three years of Spanish so far, still have a ways to go though! Good luck!
I'm a 47 year old American and have never been able to roll my R's. I've recently focused on learning Italian since I'm applying for Italian citizenship by descent. Now, after watching this video and following your instructions, I can finally roll my R's. I can't believe it, but it only took about 20 minutes of practice. Grazie mille Elissa!!!
This comment gives me hope! I’ve only rolled my R properly about twice, but as someone who wants to go into voice acting and Broadway I want and NEED to learn to do this R so I can do more voices and singing techniques!
It's Elissa, not Alyssa I don’t think he’s a native Spanish speaker. He said he’s “Hispanic”, but if he cannot roll his Rs, then Spanish is not his native language. Unless someone has a speech impediment, a native speaker will be able to roll the heck outta of it.
I am American and I was never able to roll my R’s. The tips she gives for the two words to practice, after three hours of saying them repeatedly I can now roll my R’s .
This is WITCHCRAFT. As someone with a speech delay, I never thought I would ever be able to to roll my r's. Ive been taking Italian for a long time, and this is the first time I didn't sound like a beginner beginner. Grazie Mille!
Using “better” for American/English speakers is brilliant! And the later “vorrei” into “vord-dey” repeating helped me nail it. After YEARS of trying. YEEEEEEARS. Thank you!! Best vid for this. 😁
The "just vibrate your tongue" thing is so familiar. Spanish speakers would say to me...."just do this...." and do a really long trill.....without any further explanation. And I am like.....THAT is what I just told you I cannot do. It's inherent to them, but it's not used in English & they couldn't comprehend it. Even Spanish speakers who grew up bilingual with English. "Just do this.." Thanks for the video. And now, time for my "foray" (vorrei) into trilling! :)
It's a genetically inherited trait to roll the trill of rs. It's not your fault. If you can't do the trill! Everyone can do the single r but not the double r.
Hey, you, who still can't roll your R. Don't give up! I thought I could NEVER do it. Still, I kept practicing it, and after 3 or 4 months trying to pronounce the RR every single day, I've managed to improve and now I can roll my R perfectly. Here is how it might be for you: First, you're gonna keep trying and failing. For days. Then, you'll manage to pronounce "vorrei" or "carro" correctly ONCE. You'll try again and keep failing, for weeks, but now you know you can do it. Then, you'll get it right more and more times, but still not the way you want to. You won't be able to do a long RRRRRRRR, just a short one, like RRR. Keep practicing. Let the air do the job for you. A good way to practice is to keep trying to follow a song's beat with your RR. You'll manage to do a long RRRRRR once and get excited because of it! Keep trying! Some weeks after that, you'll have dominated the rolled R and will get super happy! That's how it went for me. It took time, but it worked. Don't give up from learning a new language because of that: it's simply another challenge for you to overcome. Go for it! I hope my comment has helped you!
@@someguy6966 It works! Also, you can't do the long RRRRR for now, but I'm sure you will after some time. It was like that for me, as well. The first time I managed to do a long RRRRR was when taking a shower, haha! You literally just need to relax and let air do the job. It will come naturally, don't worry!
Same, whenever I’m driving I just say perro, morro, and literally just erre over and over and over. It’s surprising how quickly you get it. Always was so embarrassed around my native Spanish speaking family for my bad pronunciation and limited Spanish vocabulary. Now I feel more confident to practice my Spanish with family and coworkers.
aklbruce question. When you were doing it do you pronounce them like a D or the R normally. Like should I be saying VoD Dei ? It feels weird to me or should I be saying vor Dei or more like in English Vor rei ?
Alby J I personally liked how they explained it: th-cam.com/video/R-K_ksKvK6U/w-d-xo.html I got it on my 2nd or 3rd try but my only issue is I sometimes just twill without making the r sound, so I gotta practice more.
I wanted to leave this comment for anyone who is struggling. I found this video about a year ago when I started learning Portuguese, I know a bit of spanish from my time learning it in school in the US and then as a requirement when I went to college. My Spanish teachers/professors always told me my accent was excellent but I was insecure about it because I could never trill my R's properly. I saw all the comments about how this helped people within hours and got excited but then discouraged when after days of constant practicing I still couldn't do it properly. I practiced on again and off again for this last year, basically trying these exercises until my mouth got tired. A few days ago it finally clicked. Suddenly my R's started rolling on the word vorrei. It wasn't pretty at first and I could only do it on that word, it still didn't work on Spanish on words like perro, burro, erre, etc. but after a few more days of practicing I'm now able to do it on more words and I'm even starting to be able to just make the sound at will. Just keep practicing! It may not happen overnight, in a few days, or even weeks, everyone is different! You're basically teaching your brain to make a new sound which is difficult especially as we get older. I thought it would never work for me but eventually it just clicked! I promise if you keep practicing eventually you'll be able to do it too!
i might be one of the only people who sees this but thanks man, i get discouraged easily over things like this but i really like spanish and the way it sounds :) i'll try to keep this comment in mind when i feel like i should give up, have a good day/night wherever you are ^_^
Cool, glad you're getting better at it, I'm currently having trouble rolling my r's but i'm not going to give up. Also I see you're a man of culture with the skyrim pfp
@@Wealthybaby it works as good warm up for me, i find that saying that soft 'D' then holding my tongue there and breathing hard allowed my tongue to bounce back to make the noise, because everytime my tongue would adjust a little, i kept repeating the D'eeeeeeee and my tongue began to roll :)
Holy s**t, I have never been able to roll my 'R's but before the end of this vidoe I was genuinely doing it. You have made learning Italian so much easier for me. Thank you!
Thank you! 🙏🏻 I grew up bilingual, but I've never been able to roll my R's like in your second example. Separating the word and practicing each half REALLY helps!
I was discouraged from learning Spanish when I was younger because I couldn't trill the double r's and I'd already had to overcome serious speech impediments with pronouncing r in English - for example, my dad says I pronounced squirrel something like squol (my name is Aaron, so imagine how bad not being about to pronounce an r was for me) - though I overcame that pretty quickly with speech therapy at school, I didn't want to go through that again. I started to learn Spanish again almost three months ago, and a friend has been helping me a bit. I've never had any issues with single r's in Spanish, I figured that one out on my own after about 2 minutes, but the trilled r continued to elude me. Now, my friend is Mexican, and he always laughs when I try to say a word with a trilled r. He tried to explain it to me, but his explanations sucked, and then he sent me a couple of videos. One was this video. I spent about an hour practicing this with 'vorrei' yesterday, and while I saw how it may end up working, I didn't feel like I'd made any progress. Today, while doing some Spanish lessons, I came across the word 'carro.' I always say everything out loud to make sure I'm getting as much speech practice as I do reading & writing. I was immediately annoyed at how it felt impossible to pronounce the word correctly. So I spent the next 30 minutes saying 'carro' using your method of separating the syllables. And finally, amidst well over a hundred attempts to say 'carro', I had a single, wonderfully executed pronunciation - where I made a perfectly trilled r, and I could feel the vibration. At that moment, every feeling of discouragement was gone and I spent the next 30 minutes trying to say a bunch of different words with 'rr,' and I can now do it reliably more than half of the time. I cannot sufficiently express the happiness I feel for this and my gratitude for you.
Funny! I also substituted vorrei for carro because I'm learning Spanish. My Mexican friend made fun of me because when I tried to only trill my rr's a huge puff of air came out instead. But I'm thinking this will help me in the long run.
Sukhoi DUDE!!!! PLEASE HELP ME!!!!! Im Mexican and cannot roll the double R. Its so embarrassing. My Spanish is pretty well but I’ve shied away from using it with my family because I cannot roll the double R. I’ll try using carro instead, but any tips?
@@ellahernandez5776 Well, I followed what she said, and after a solid hour of essentially saying 'cod-doe' I started to feel a bit of vibration on the tip of my tongue, and it started to sound correct sometimes. At first, I could still only say carro with the trill, but as I practiced a couple of other words - with different sounds before and after the trill - like corre, rojo, burro - eventually I was able to say it every time, and now it just feels perfectly natural. I can even make the sound on its own without a word around it most of the time now. Really speak up while you're practicing as if you're talking to someone on the opposite side of a classroom. I couldn't do it at all while whispering until very recently, and it's still difficult for me to do it at a low speaking volume. One other thing that I noticed when I was still having more trouble, was while lying in bed on my back, I was able to roll my r's more often. I tried just tilting my head back, too, and that worked, but it's a bit less comfortable than lying down. I think it makes it easier, but it's kind of difficult for me to explain why. Blame gravity, I suppose. I think the biggest thing is simply to say it the way Elissa does, broken up into two parts, pronouncing each individual r the normal way you would pronounce them in Spanish, and then it'll just start working after a while. You can add me on Discord if you'd like to talk and I can try to explain more, but I'm not sure how much more I can add.
I'm a native Afrikaans speaker, and our R is officially pronounced as the alveolar trill. However, my brother and I have been mocked and teased for being unable to say it... for virtually all of our lives - even by our parents. I disliked poems that used R prominently, and I couldn't even pronounce my own *name* correctly, having to resort to the alveolar approximant/glide instead. We were supposedly taken for speech therapy when we were younger (I can't remember any of it), but it evidently didn't help. Any other advice we were given was frustratingly vague and ultimately useless. We'd pretty much given up on learning to pronounce the sound. Recently, though, I bought David J. Peterson's "The Art of Language Invention", which got me into exploring all the different sounds that exist cross-linguistically. Just today, I realised I could pronounce literally EVERY sound (edit from future self: *most sounds) in the IPA, _except_ the alveolar trill and its derivatives. It's maddening! I then decided that I would just look it up myself, and though the videos were interesting, they only explained how to pronounce the trill in theory, basically hinting "you'll get it eventually". This video, on the other hand, just... worked. Once I realised I was already pronouncing the alveolar flap, I almost cried. I phoned my BFF halfway through the video and I've been ecstatic since then (this was two-and-a-half hours ago). I cannot wait to help my brother learn how to pronounce it too! I never had an official TH-cam account before now, but there cannot be ANY better reason to create one than to like this video and subscribe to your channel. You've literally changed my life. Thank you. Truly.
I cannot tell you how emotional your comment made me, you're gonna make me cry :') I'm so honoured to have been able to help you. It's really tough when people make fun of you for your pronunciation. People made fun of me when I couldn't roll the R years ago when I used to use a French R. But it doesn't compare, they were making fun of my third language, but you were made fun of for your first, and you're forced to speak that every day. Thank you so much for this comment. I hope this boosts your confidence, and every once in a while you think of me when you pronounce your beautiful R's 😍♥ I can't believe you made an account just to subscribe to me, I'm so happy! You made my day.
@@elissa.dellaera It's me again! I celebrated my birthday yesterday, so I thought I'd update you on the R-situation. (I _do_ think of you everyone once in a while when I pronounce my beautiful R's. ♥) Two years ago, I had difficulty doing the trill and could only really manage the tap/flap, but I've been practising since then and can now roll my R until I run out of breath! I hide this fact from my parents, since I _can_ (and do!) use the trill in conversation, but it's still somewhat challenging. Someday, I'll just start using the R perfectly during conversations and stun my parents with how this came "out of nowhere". But until then, my practice continues. :P I'm glad to see you're well! Quarantine's driving everyone mad to some degree, but it's good to see you're coping too. Stay healthy, and once again, thank you for your amazing advice! ^_^
ImaCoward124 i dont think it counts as impediment if you cant roll the r sound (even it is your mother tongue). Tons of languages in the world (like mine) dont have the rolling r, ppl speak these language just fine, you def not consider them having speech impediment
Hold the frick up, I thought the advice she gave on “vorrei” was super vague until I tried it wth 😭 my tongue really did fill in the gap at least I’m a little bit better at rolling my r’s now
OMG! So I’m currently learning Spanish and I decided to use the word “Carro” and I did it in less that a minute! 💀😭 This is crazy because I was just about to give up on Spanish all together. BLESS YOU!
Thanks! I'm a Spanish teacher and I always tell my students not to be intimidated if they can't roll their rs because they can do the short r sound by using a soft d in it's place. Then I let them hear me say "cara" with me using an r and then again with me using a soft d. No one can ever hear the difference. But I've never had a good way to help them roll their rs for the longer Spanish rr sound, so I just had them practice going hdddd. I love your technique of just breaking it into two and letting your brain/muscle memory/lazy mouth run the rrs together! I'm going to try this on them soon. Thanks for sharing.
I was practicing and I noticed that when I kept repeating "Por qué" over and over again, I learned it a lot faster, so yeah you might want to try that as well.
I was honestly watching this video as a joke so I could sing song lyrics correct “the ting goes skkkkr pap! pap pap pap pap pap” and by 5:53 I could do it. SO THANK YOU 🧚🏽♀️
I've been trying to learn how to do the double R trill for the LONGEST time now, and thought I had tried everything. I'm trying to learn Russian and the Р (similar to an English R) is trilled 100% of the time, and I've been unbelievably frustrated by not being able to do it. Been trying to for months. Tried the second method a few times and it worked just barely, but I heard it!! I'm thrilled. Thank you!! 😭👏👏👏
Your tip to split the word in two like in vor rei is genius! I've never heard this tip before but I think it's helping. I am not rolling my double r's yet, but I hope with practice I'll get better!
Girl! I have watched SO MANY videos and NONE of them has helped. But only 3 minutes into yours I finally am getting the hang of it. You're also the only one that mentioned placing the tongue on that little "bump" right behind my teeth. THANK YOU! YOU ARE AMAZING
I think it takes somebody like you who couldn't roll the r to teach people like me who still can't do it lol. Most of the videos that I see are people who already know how to. These people have no idea how HARD it is when your mouth just doesn't allow that sound to happen lol. I still can't do it, but I'll practice with your technique. It seems to be the best one I've come across so far.
@@lone.8416 Its in the uvula, same as German. French r is just a tab bit more nasal. Your tongue goes into the American R position (retroflexive), the uvula rests on the back of the tongue, and you use enough air to sort of tril the uvula.
As someone who grew up relatively close to Italy - Romania, and obviously speaking Romanian - a language that much like Italian is full of the hard Rs , I can tell ya this is the EASIEST VIDEO explanation I’ve seen ever . She’s on point . And she makes this easy . While I don’t have an issue with my Rs cause I obviously learned it as a small child from the very beginning, this woman is soooo good at explaining it . I have saved this video and will absolutely reference it when I get asked how In the world do people pronounce hard Rs
I’m probably super late to this video, but I want to say that after 10 years of learning spanish, this was the ONLY video that put the RR into perspective. After 2 minutes, I got the basic pronunciation down. It’s not perfect by any means, but I’m super proud of myself. Thank you!!! This was so helpful
Wow, I am learning Russian, and barely sort-of could sometimes roll my R sounds. By the end of this video, I can do both of the R and RR sounds as you taught!!! Thanks so much! Now I just need to practice so it can become more natural!!!
Holy moly. I just trilled my R's for the first time. I've been trying to learn for years and it took 2 seconds to learn with your technique! This is amazing. You should be awarded the Nobel Prize for this lol.
The caro/carro thing also works in Spanish, and is my favorite example: caro - expensive carro - car "Mi carro es caro." My car is expensive. I don't have any trouble making either sound. I don't know how I learned it.
Wow! I have been a professional clarinetist for 25 years and have never been able to flutter tongue. I watched your video and was able to do it in 10 minutes! Thank you!!!!❤
I've been learning spanish for almost 8 years now, but never managed to pronounce the rr correctly, no matter how much I've practiced. But holy cow, this method works like a charm! Thank you so much!!!
Heh. and I still can't quite figure out how to pronounce встреча (which has *_four_* consonants) or сыр (because I like cheese). I'm learning, though I don't think I'll be rolling my Rs any time soon. (But then again, neither could Lenin, and if he could fake it, then so can I)
The “d” thing helped me SO MUCH. I am learning Russian and it is infamous for having hard to pronounce words and rolling/ trilling the r’s. Now I don’t sound so american 😭😭😭😹thank you so much!!!
Elissa, thank you! I had been trying to roll my "rr" for more than a year without success. I did the "r" OK but not the "rr". I looked at other videos but they didn't help. After watching your video and following your guidance for 15 MINUTES I can do it. I'm elated! Thanks again.
I spent my whole life thinking I'd never be able to do this and never understood people saying things like "vibrate your tongue" or "just relax your tongue when you push it forward". Like relax and push do not work together for me, lol. This just taught me in 2 minutes. I did the two r thing with the d sound over and over and then my tongue just started doing it! That's crazy! Thank you so much!!!
I have been trying to learn how to roll my r’s for my ENTIRE LIFE. I am Mexican and I am the only one in my family who can’t do this-and after this video I can!! I’ve been practicing your method for 2 days and I’m already doing so much better than I ever have. Thank you thank you!!
Great video! My son was rolling his R's in minutes after this. I tried to explain where the tongue goes and he couldn't quite grasp it, but after you suggested the D replacement he got it instantly. Thank you!
As a native french speaker learning italian now I always assumed that the rolled r was similar to the french r. I now realize that the french r is vibrating the uvula, which is completely different to the alveolar trill. I've always been able to do the single r pretty well like in sera, but certain combinations are much harder to pronounce, especially when the r is right next to a consonant. I really like the way you explained the rolled r and I will practice vor-rei and drive my roommate crazy for a while.
yesididitverywell I'm glad you thought it was helpful 😊 It's kind of something I experienced as well. Since French was my second language, when I'd try to speak Italian my brain would go in "second language mode" and I would automatically produce the French R because it was the only other one I could pronounce. That's why it's easy to use the sound that already exists in English, because it's not a new sound, it's just used differently. Anyway, DRIVE HIM MAD, you will feel amazing when you can easily pronounce the R 😁😁
yesididitverywell salut ! Mon nom est Lulu et juste pour que vous sachiez que je suis un orateur italien et que je peux faire le trille alvéolaire . La seule raison pour laquelle je peux parler français est parce que je l'ai étudié dans mes premières années de lycée .
Two things happened when I watched this and tried it out. First, the single 'r' really reminded me of the Japanese 'r' sound. I love how learning totally unrelated languages can still help figure out mouth movements, tongue placement, etc. The second thing was I actually rolled my 'r's for the first time. I'm sure my version still sounds funny, five minutes isn't much practice, but it clicked. The way you described what the tongue does and how to use other common sounds to train is awesome!
This was super helpful, I lived in Serbia for three years and was always made fun of for not being able to roll my r's when I spoke (I'm Canadian) and I realise now from this video my problem was thinking that it's some sort of magic trick... It's not, it's a natural thing anyone can do and I'm so happy I learned this in like two days after practicing for almost 6 years now
Not being able to roll my tongue discouraged me from continuing to learn but now after this VERY HELPFUL tip some excitement has flared back up! Thank you
I really appreciate this post. I’ve been trying to learn Spanish for about a week now and what’s really been discouraging for me was the R’s but with a bit a practice from your method I found myself learning to roll my R’s. Slowly but surely. Thank you, I am a bit more confident now🙏🏾
@@toniton9434 Every single day! When I could do it, I practiced saying these 3 words in italian: Vorrei Ragazzo Ferrari "Vorrei" is the best one for practicing, tho. Whenever I got alone in my home I would do it. It was frustrating because I kept failing, but then it worked, and now i can roll my R. Also, another good tip is to try to listen to a song and follow the beat trying to roll the R. It's really fun when you get it right haha
@@elissa.dellaera Actually i can speak both r even though i am not Spanish or ltalin. Only French r is the hard one for me. Please teach how to pronounce it.
Thank you!!! I had the single r down for years learning Italian, but never the trill. I've been repeating 'vorrei' nonstop like a crazy person with the double tap and I can feel the trill waiting to happen. Please keep posting!
Severa van Poe yaaaaay! Good job! You'll get it any moment now. You're very welcome and I'm glad it worked. I will definitely keep posting 😊 I should have a new video out tomorrow so stay tuned for that 😇
I used to be able to roll my r’s and just this week I started studying Swedish. It was like “I know I used to know this so I gotta figure it out”, she comes with the “Vorrei” trick and my tongue almost instantly remembered how it worked. Very grateful for this video!
I was starting to feel terribly about not being able to pronounce this and I am so glad that there's an actual description for an exercise that I can actually believe will get me there
This is some kind of magic. A fantastic and truly appreciated breakdown. I've been trying to learn to roll my R's for years now and have never been able to. Not even ten minutes and I've got it - not well yet, but I've done it. Thank you so much for this.
Perchè a noi Italiani c'è questa specie di narcisismo represso che viene attivato quando si parla di noi in contesti stranieri. Ci piace sentir parlare di noi tra popoli stranieri hahahahahahah
Elissa, thank you so much! I'm over 50 now, and just started learning Spanish again tonight. After only a few minutes of your instruction to trilling I have finally learned how to roll an "R!" After almost 4 decades trying through deep insecurity and inability! Talk about excited!!! I did it fantastic several times already, when done by accident. If I think too much, then it doesn't happen. Or, it is really messy. Had to stop and thank you! I'd like to learn conversational French, Greek, Italian and possibly German or Russian later on. I just may do so, after all. What stopped me from learning a second language is my inability to roll an "R," since I first tried at 13 years old. For months the teacher tried to teach me, and I simply couldn't do it. Feeling completely alien and incompetent in her class, I decided to drop Spanish for that reason. Come to think of it, her method for teaching Algebra wasn't any better for my learning style. Lol! It wasn't me after all. Others have tried to teach me over the years, native speakers even. I used other TH-cam videos. To no avail. Never could produce one, until tonight with you; but we've always had lots of laughs listening to me try! Thanks to you I am confident the trilling will improve within my oral cavity and brain, until it becomes second nature. Thank you, Lord! Thank you, Elissa! I prayed for this, to receive it as a gift, before I began tonight. Too funny, eh?! God is good! You are too! Don't stop doing what you do!
Holy crap I know this video came out like 4 years ago but I just found it and it is changing my life! I'm born/raised in the US, but I've spoken Croatian with my family ever since I was a kid and could never figure out how to roll my Rs! I thought I just couldn't do it and it's been a huge insecurity now that I'm an adult. Other videos have been very confusing, so thanks so much for making a clear and simple video!
Woah! I made more progress in 30 mins using your technique then I have in years of Spanish practice! I made a few decent rr sounds. I found arroz was the easiest for me to say almost correctly at the begging of a practice session.
Thank you SO MUCH for OVER 30,000 views! This is a new channel so it means a lot to me. I hope some of you will subscribe and stick around for more videos on Italian and English. And also other random stuff once I have enough subscribers who actually care about my life 😁

This maybe the best video on this that I have ever watched. I've been learning Spanish for awhile, and now I feel confident that I will finally learn the rolling "r".
😍😍😍 Yaaay! You'll get it, don't give up!

“Betta/sera”
Unless you’re saying it with a British accent like she said in the video.
yeah i just put on an american accent
MrNorthernSol you’re right. It’s more of a “uh” sound than an “ah”.

The "just vibrate your tongue" thing is so familiar. Spanish speakers would say to me...."just do this...." and do a really long trill.....without any further explanation. My grandma tried to teach me... It wasn't very helpful
Hey, you, who still can't roll your R.
Don't give up! I thought I could NEVER do it. Still, I kept practicing it, and after 3 or 4 months trying to pronounce the RR every single day, I've managed to improve and now I can roll my R perfectly. Here is how it might be for you:
First, you're gonna keep trying and failing.
Even if I can't do the long RRRRR sound but I can put it into words that's really all that matters, right? 🥺
@@felipeferraz356 hey! I can roll my r's now! Still having trouble fitting them into words though. Just wanted to update you!

For vor-rei, my tongue wants to make an L sound on the rei. Should I be saying it like vord-dei to practice?

Same! Well, almost; I'm trying to make cat sounds. I felt kinda guilty watching this serious language vid with such a goofy goal. 😂
Im here to learn how to learn how to say Pooh Shiestys “Big Bllrrrrrdd” lmao
😍😍😍 YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so happy for you!
Funny! I also substituted vorrei for carro because I'm learning Spanish. My Mexican friend made fun of me because when I tried to only trill my rr's a huge puff of air came out instead. But I'm thinking this will help me in the long run.
Update, I can trill my r's every time now, any word, without fail. Thanks, again :)
I JUST ROLLED MY FIRST R!!! TWO YEARS OF ITALIAN, ONE YEAR LIVING THERE AND YOU TAUGHT ME IN TEN MINUTES???
Two years ago, I had difficulty doing the trill and could only really manage the tap/flap, but I've been practising since then and can now roll my R until I run out of breath! I hide this fact from my parents, since I _can_ (and do!) use the trill in conversation, but it's still somewhat challenging. Someday, I'll just start using the R perfectly during conversations and stun my parents with how this came "out of nowhere". But until then, my practice continues. :P

Me: *Attempts*
Sound: “KKKRIRHHRRHHH”
Me: “Why tho?”
looks like a uvular trill fjdhf
Try saying "GRRRR" or "CRRRR" instead.
Hello Maral, how are you doing. I believe you are doing well.
Wow, I am learning Russian, and barely sort-of could sometimes roll my R sounds. By the end of this video, I can do both of the R and RR sounds as you taught!!! Thanks so much! Now I just need to practice so it can become more natural!!!
Me too! 😃
1 year later did you learn the language 😃?
Holy moly. I just trilled my R's for the first time. I've been trying to learn for years and it took 2 seconds to learn with your technique! This is amazing. You should be awarded the Nobel Prize for this lol.
i’m tired of being made fun of for not being able to roll my r’s naturally this helped sm🙏🏽🙏🏽
Hey, we got the same name. We are Moreno’s lol.
Ay yo I know this woman did not just teach me something I’ve been trying to learn forever in like 9 minutes
The caro/carro thing also works in Spanish, and is my favorite example:
caro - expensive
carro - car
"Mi carro es caro." My car is expensive.
I don't have any trouble making either sound. I don't know how I learned it.
I use carro and barrio to practice.
"Mi carro es caro" means "my cart (supermarket or countryside's one) is expensive" in Spain xd
"You can already use this sound if you are American"
*Spanish class flashbacks*
🤣🤣🤣
Try being Russian and not knowing how to pronounce hard R’s😭😭
I'm actually learning Russian so I sort of know how you feel. It's painful oml, especially trying to talk to people.
As someone who’s polish and r’s sound like L’ s, I understand 😭
Ayeeee
I still caint
Heh. and I still can't quite figure out how to pronounce встреча (which has *_four_* consonants) or сыр (because I like cheese). I'm learning, though I don't think I'll be rolling my Rs any time soon.
(But then again, neither could Lenin, and if he could fake it, then so can I)
Holy cow girl, I've been trying to find the explanation that clicks for me for YEARS and this one is it, thank you so much!
You're welcome 😍
Nice!
Just ran a marathon and can definitely say it was much easier than learning to roll my R’s!
Anyone else trying to learn this since you're doing duolingo? I hope I'm not alone 😅 I'm tryna learn Spanish
same😂
@Najei Robinson me too. he’s mexican and while he’s bilingual, his mom isn’t and i want to make an effort to actually be able to talk to her
@Najei Robinson try language transfer!
that’s exactly what i’m doing lol i’m trying to learn spanish to impress my parents who both know 2 languages
@@jas2994 oh that's nice! I feel like it's always good to learn it either way lol
4:20 is the ‘okurrrrrrrrrrrr’ R sound
I have been trying to learn how to roll my r’s for my ENTIRE LIFE. I am Mexican and I am the only one in my family who can’t do this-and after this video I can!! I’ve been practicing your method for 2 days and I’m already doing so much better than I ever have. Thank you thank you!!
You're very welcome 😊😊
Great video! My son was rolling his R's in minutes after this. I tried to explain where the tongue goes and he couldn't quite grasp it, but after you suggested the D replacement he got it instantly. Thank you!
As a native french speaker learning italian now I always assumed that the rolled r was similar to the french r. I now realize that the french r is vibrating the uvula, which is completely different to the alveolar trill. I've always been able to do the single r pretty well like in sera, but certain combinations are much harder to pronounce, especially when the r is right next to a consonant. I really like the way you explained the rolled r and I will practice vor-rei and drive my roommate crazy for a while.
yesididitverywell I'm glad you thought it was helpful 😊
It's kind of something I experienced as well.
To be fair, even some Italian people are unable to trill their r and pronounce it exactly life the French do
yesididitverywell salut !
Mon nom est Lulu et juste pour que vous sachiez que je suis un orateur italien et que je peux faire le trille alvéolaire .
La seule raison pour laquelle je peux parler français est parce que je l'ai étudié dans mes premières années de lycée .
LOL, if you try to do that with your uvula, you're just gonna sound like Chewbacca!
As a bonus, you now know how to pronounce the czech r :P
Thank you
Me after saying "vorrei" properly for the first time: "it's not in my throat!"
If I say it like it sounds french.
I really appreciate this post. I’ve been trying to learn Spanish for about a week now and what’s really been discouraging for me was the R’s but with a bit a practice from your method I found myself learning to roll my R’s. Slowly but surely. Thank you, I am a bit more confident now🙏🏾
“It took me 4 years”
Me: *currrently taking Spanish for the next 6 months*
I could roll my R in some months, lol
It simply requires practice and determination
@@felipeferraz356 Tell me more, how often do u practice
@@toniton9434 Every single day! When I could do it, I practiced saying these 3 words in italian:
Vorrei
Ragazzo
Ferrari
"Vorrei" is the best one for practicing, tho. Whenever I got alone in my home I would do it. It was frustrating because I kept failing, but then it worked, and now i can roll my R.
Also, another good tip is to try to listen to a song and follow the beat trying to roll the R. It's really fun when you get it right haha
By the way, it only took me 4 years because I didn’t know a good technique for it. Once you know the technique it goes by much much faster ☺️☺️
@@elissa.dellaera Actually i can speak both r even though i am not Spanish or ltalin. Only French r is the hard one for me. Please teach how to pronounce it.
I've been trying to roll my tounge for 20-plus years. I'm just now getting anything even remotely close ! Thank you , I'm now inspired, lol.
I will definitely keep posting 😊 I should have a new video out tomorrow so stay tuned for that 😇
OMG IT WORKED AS SOON AS I SAID “SEDA” 😭😭😭 its taken me so many years
I'm an Italian living in the UK, I've never been able to roll my R's. Thank you so much, this works. I can't believe it.
xkxxky vero? Hhhh non ho mai incontrato italiano chi non riesce a pronunciarsi RRRR in Italia hhh
quanto tempo ti ci è voluto
I used to be able to roll my r’s and just this week I started studying Swedish. It was like “I know I used to know this so I gotta figure it out”, she comes with the “Vorrei” trick and my tongue almost instantly remembered how it worked. Very grateful for this video!
This actually works! Wow! I have never rolled a “double r” in my life until now! How exciting!
I swear... I spent years never being able to roll my R’s an I was able to roll it after this exercise... haha THANK YOU! Mind blowing.
Thank you so much!!! I rolled my R’s for the first time ever!!! It wasn’t perfect, but I did it!!! Thank you for making my day!!

Hello Casey, how are you doing. I believe you are doing well.
I am italian, I’ve been speaking italian my whole life, why am I watching this?

WOOOOOOO, I’m so glad it helped!
Woah! I made more progress in 30 mins using your technique then I have in years of Spanish practice! I made a few decent rr sounds. I found arroz was the easiest for me to say almost correctly at the begging of a practice session.
OH MY GOSH your comment got me to do it once!! I finally feel like I have a chance at this!! Arroz is the game changer word!!
@@rockintennis I’m doing it with my throat, I hate myself 😞
Excellent teaching Elissa. Clear, concise and finally broken down in a way that makes it much easier to learn.
Thank you so much! 😍 I’m so glad you found it helpful
