  • Why is Jamie Lannister so misunderstood? Does it always go back to Aerys, The Mad King???! Maybe. But Most peoples dislike of Jamie stems from Bran Stark. Jamie Lannister The Kingslayer is by far the most misunderstood character in Game of Thrones. It's No Secret he's one of my favorites if not my favorite male character in a song of ice and fire or Game of Thrones.. In this video I will explain why Jamie Lannister is so misunderstood and how he's actually one of the good guys!

    Strangely enough, Jaime didn’t become my favorite character until I started reading the books and rewatching the whole series. It hit me like wrecking ball. He’s the epitome of the antihero to me. I believe he’s going to go all the way and be key in saving everyone.

      PS Bartlett Jaime Lannister just as Darth Vader and others as such represent the concept of the "Fallen Knight" in fiction and it's really my favorite concept. Cause of the whole redemption element. And when it happens the former villain becomes even more of a hero than the hero. It's so rewarding to watch.

    Jamie already payed a blood price for pushing Brann..was captured for years, lost his hand (the biggest payment), even lost all his kids, his father, and now hes left cerccii. There were a are more smaller moments bit these were the main ones... The point is, Jamie has already payed for his wrong doings.. And then theres him stoping the burning of Kings Landing. I have no reason to hate him.

    • @heather173
      @heather173 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I fell for Jamie when he saved Brienne from rape. Up until then, I truly hated him, now he's on my good list. He is a man with honour, although he's flawed, messed up and conflicted, but he has tried to change, grow and has suffered horrible losses for his previous bad decisions. I think if he has a chance to meet Bran--Bran would understand or at least accept what Jamie did, because Jamie's pushing him out the window is what caused Bran to become the 3 Eyed Raven. Jamie prevented thousands of people from dying by killing King Aerys. He went to Dorne to save Myrcella. He saved his brother from execution, IMO the one bad thing he did in the show was pushing Bran out the window. Screwing his sister is wrong in our society, but in the society of GOT--it seems almost weirdly normal. Once he lost his hand, his entire character changed for the better.

      Oh, I very much agree, Dallas Itzen- I hope he's out of King's Landing for good. If he dies, I want him to die in the arms of the woman who really DOES love him, my girl Brienne. He has changed so much in the show, and in the books as well. I'm on one of his chapters right now, where he is still calling Brienne "Wench" and tormenting her...but the Bloody Mummers/Brave Compnions have just entered the scene...we know how that changes things.

      Pushing a 7 year old so he could die something he doesn’t feel bad about he justifies it in his mind and to others that he was spying on them and for all his years in captivity he still justifies it as such

    I love your channel and I have a lot of love for Jamie. But I didn’t like the comparison of Bran to Joffrey. We cheered about Joffrey’s death based on his previous actions. If Rob pushed Joffrey out of a window without knowing anything about Joffrey, Rob would face same criticism.

      Tremaine Slaughter what I was explaining is.. We knew Bran, We loved Bran. We saw things from a “Stark perspective” We didn’t know Jamie. What we knew of him we learned from the Starks, it was awful and judgmental.. We didn’t even get a look into Jamie’s thinking until Storms of Swords and by then most readers had already made up their minds.

    The problem I have with Jamie is not just that he attempted the murder of a 7 year old, but the nonchalant attitude with which he did it. As if to say, "No big deal." He has never shown any real remorse or inner conflict over it. Then he threatens to smash Edmure Tully's baby against the castle wall if Edmure doesn't hand the castle over and makes it clear that it is not an idle threat. I guess this amazing arc he is on does not include avoiding the murder of children.

    The best Jaime video I've seen for sure! My favourite character after reading the books too. The show don't allow you to empathise as much with him but he's the classic anti hero and example of "if you treat someone like a villain they'll act the villain."

  • @fulanspeaks7319

    I agree Jaime has one of the most well written character arcs. He is an extremely complicated and complexed character to pass judgement on. I don't know that he is more good than bad or vice versa and this for me adds to his intrigue. I can't wait to see the dialogue between he and Dany next season and I hope Jaime lives till the end..... Though I doubt he will

    I remember the moment I first admitted that I was really starting to like Jamie, it was difficult to admit! He is so well written that yes the first time you read or watch he is absolutely hateable. But once he tells Brienne about what really happened with the Mad King you see that he was forced into the decisions he had to make, otherwise it would have meant the death of everyone, likely including himself. When he starts turning away from Cersei you start to silently cheer, and when he rejects her letter it's over, you're team Jamie! He's complicated.
    I'm loving this video, great job Gray!

  • @carmendelgado2848

    Jaime is also one of my favorite characters because of how flawed he is. I think one of the reason that he is hated more than other characters is because of his family. The Lannisters have no issue killing innocents, (Roberts bastards). While you see Ned pretty much die because he didn’t want to see Cersei’s and Jaime’s children die at Roberts hand. I hope that at the end of the story ,if Jaime lives, he gets to remake the Lannister name, just as his father did. Of course taking it in a direction that is guided by his new values no longer influenced by his father or sister.

    I LOVE this 'misunderstood' series, Gray. And it's especially helpful with characters who are a mystery to me. I don't think Jaime needs a much more redemption now that he's left Cersei, though he probably does need a heroic fulfillment arc (and romantic?) I think he's not going to survive next season, but he will deserve a place in the White Book.

  • @yensid4294
    @yensid4294 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I agree, Jamie is a superbly well written character with a fascinating arc & history. I disliked him at first not because of his deeds but because of his arrogance. When he showed more compassion to Brienne & allowed himself to be more human, I started to warm to him. Of course we learned more & more about him after that. And as it turned out, he was almost as abused by his father as Tyrion was. So no wonder his sister could manipulate him so easily.
    One quibble. Robert wasn't universally considered a hero. He was often referred to as The Usurper. And that stuck in his craw. And I don't think he was presented as honorable in any way. Just the opposite in fact. And a crap king taboot.

    You can really get the best picture of how big Winterfell is at the moment Jaime is about to push Bran, with the other parts of the Keep being quite far off in the distance. It's hard to imagine in the books, and it's hard in the show, just looking down, and around from the ground.

    yeah his road to redemption started in second episode and continues. opponent's say king slayer. when the term "mad King" is heard I think most people think Alfred e Newman is who he killed. the fact he stayed loyal while the rest of his family were on the other side doesn't get him any points.

      Book history. They actually didn't write him well in the show AT ALL after his journey with Brienne and changed his arc from the books so he just sticks by Cersei seemingly endlessly like a lap dog. Jaime is quick to cut her off in the books. When he goes to the Riverlands she writes to him begging his help from the High Sparrow and he burns the letter

    Jaime, not Arya, has to save Bran from the Great Other, that is his redemption to me. This is a great analysis and thank you for using the books. Jaime is my favorite character so far through the 6 we have and in the show he’s also my favorite. They did a great job making him the Jaime we see in the books who we can empathize with. Such a human man, redundant I know, but so true. And he has to have something with Brienne, we all know he loves her and she loves him unless they all ready had that final moment, been a long time since I read DwD. Jaime loves to a fault, whoever he loves he will do all manner of things to save them, his family, Brienne, and I hope Brandon in the end. Ironically Jaime is the most honorable person in Westeros to me because when it really matters, he chooses what is right, not what is honorable; and that makes him a truly honorable man.

    i have studied the psychology and caracter of some rulers in Medieval Europe and the caracter of Jamie is very similar with Vlad Tepes also know as Dracula . The abuse of his father and the fact that he grew up at another castle away from home in the hands of the enemy, were rumors about he being rape and beat ,put to du horrible things to turkish slaves ,humans from his own country ,and he really make them pay for that ,them and the spiders from his court .Vlad was the second legitimate son of Vlad II Dracul, who was an illegitimate son of Mircea I of Wallachia. He won the moniker “Dracul” for his membership in the Order of the Dragon[8]. It was a militant fraternity founded by Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund. The Order of the Dragon was dedicated to halting the Ottoman advance into Europe. :)) He was a real Dragon

      Samantha Mauney Aiken Dany is a great character, especially book Dany she is my favourite. She isn't misunderstood, people shit on her because of there jealousy. They hate the fact that she is the main protagonist on the show. The haters try to turn Dany into this evil tyrant who kills everything in sight. The exaggeration of Danys character is laughable by some online. She is without a doubt my favourite character on the show, maybe one of my favourites of all time. I must say Book Dany is far better than show Dany.

    Here’s the thing with defending Jamie shoving Bran out the window as defense of his family; Jamie and Cersei are the ones who put their family at risk in the first place.
    They weren’t innocents trying to save what they loved, they WERE the threat.

      agreed. but,
      that makes robb stark as a bastard and a thread to both his family and his people the north.
      just like the other king robb s womanizing ways ending up disgusting his fiancee and ending with her eloping and the wars afterwards.
      and that idiot prince targaryen that kidnapped/eloped with the fiancee of one of his lords, who is the only daughter of the northern lord a very important highborn lady not needing being engaged to anyone to make her albeit percieved kidnapping to cause a war.
      seems jamie ended up with less bloodshed for his wandering organ than others with similar bedroom activity addictions.
      not saying jamie is a good person. just others i have mentioned arent better.

    It's weird that Cersei was brought to Court at 12, and it's quite well known that she wanted to marry Rhaegar, and that Tywin wanted this (they got rejected) too, but then it is said in the books that Twyin was maybe hoping to marry her to Viserys when he came of age, OR when Elia died. What's up?

    First I have to say I love your videos! They are by far my favorite they are cheery every time I hear "my sweet summer children..." lol For Jaime I'd say Tywin sacking King's Landing didn't help his reputation nor did people like Barristan Selmy who followed all his orders, but I want to talk about how shows have little mistakes here and there. For instance in season one Viserys talks about the dragon skulls and as you got closer to the throne they got bigger and bigger but yet later Tywin tells Joffrey that the smallest skull was right here and points to the foot of the throne and says, "and it was the size of an apple." Or how when Stannis attacked Winterfell he was met with a hellacious storm but when Jon Snow attacked there was no snow on the ground. Just odd things like Euron being south of Dragonstone then suddenly being at Casterly Rock at the same time Grey Worm arrives. Now season 7 really throws me through a loop because some parts are confusing but I can't call them errors because it could be that these scenes were meant to be left questionable and mostly I mean the Bran scenes. We see him as what appears to be warging a flock of ravens over the Night's King whose power wards them off meaning he's a "seer" as well. But the thing is is that we don't exactly know if Bran was warging the birds or having a vision at the tree. Most of his visions are of past and future events it seems. So could he be having a vision and obviously the Night King had a trap set he could have froze the water and killed them anytime but he wanted his dragon. What really gets me though is the last scene of the last episode where they for some reason show Bran by the tree again and we see birds again over Eastwatch but again is he warging them or is he having a vision? Is it possible the scene is one of the future he saw and the wall hasn't even actually fallen yet. He was able to quickly jump to the Lyanna and Rhaegar marriage seen with ease at Samwell's request so why not do that for more strategic purposes than just spying on the Night King? So confused!!!!!!

    Imagine how the show would have played out had Jaime and Cersei simply asked Bran what he had seen. Had Bran responded with the innocent and honest reply that he was following a seemingly enchanted crow with three eyes, Jaime and Cersei may have just laughed in relief that he was too busy being naive to even notice their secret. They may have even humored the boy and sent him on a wild goose chase to look for the crow. Had that haopened there never would have been any fall, there never would have been any attempted assassination, or mysterious Valyrian steel dagger. Granted things still might have unfolded in a similar if not identical fashion with other events acting as the catalyst, but it's still interesting to think about what would have happened had Jamie never pushed Bran.

    I had read the first book and was halfway through the second when I asked a coworker, who had read the entire series, what his favorite character was. He said 'Jamie'. I said 'haha. right. really, who?' He insisted he wasn't joking. I told him I would never, ever be able to like Jamie Lannister. Yeah...I ate those words. As you said he really is one of the best characters in the series and really has had a change for the better. The thing that I never got (well, I do because Martin wrote him to be like this) is why he didn't tell everyone what he told Breinne. If he told everyone that he saved the city most people would have viewed him as a hero. Certainly the people in the city would have. But he didn't so everyone hates him. That was a dumb move.

    It's sad that house Lannister was brought down by 3 fools. Tywin, Joffrey and Cercei. Well Jaime contributed by pushing Bran and attacking Ned. He made choices just like many other characters, and those had consequences. He chose to kill a king and he was upset people calling you kingslayer. The times he was living in, there were ways when you could set aside your vows. Many people wanted aerys to be tried for all his crimes, but Jaime took that from them. Which only brings resentment hence the oathbreaker title. Jaime suppressed his true identity for so long that by the time he decided what he couldn't live with a lot had happened. The argument that bran would have told everybody is totally ridiculous. Ned had no proof to tell Robert that those weren't his kids. I mean there are so many variables. The only unfortunate thing is he was born in house Lannister without a mother to temper things or a woman who would have understood his true nature. The next season is what will be remembered most about Jaime, great acts of courage, sacrifice and war. Everything he's ever wanted, well minus the love of a woman who cares for him.

    I admit when Jamie started out I did not care for him, Cersi is another story; but as the story developed so did Jamie. He learned to adjust and thus changed for the better. Eventually he changes enough to become an asset to the coming storyline. Cersi on the other hand, can't wait for her to receive her just dessert.

  • @PapaEmeritus_4evr
    @PapaEmeritus_4evr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jamie certainly wasn't thinking about his family or protecting them as you mentioned when he pushed Bran out the window. If Robert and the Lannisters found out, they probably wouldn't even believe Bran in the least. That Jamie was thinking bout himself. You can't really compare it to "what if it was Sansa and Rob"? What if it was was Joffry would you be mad?" They are such different situations and people. Joffry was an asshole. Now if it was at the beginning of the series and I knew nothing bout Joffry of course I'd be mad if someone pushed him (Joff) out the window. Later Joffry I wouldn't mind but if it was a Stark, I'd be mad because Starks are better than that. And yes, I WAS mad when Rob broke his word to Walder Frey. Look at the outcome. Rob was a fool. That's why it's a completely different thing. It can't be compared to anything else in the story. Early Jamie was just a selfish, egotistical asshole.
    Also you said everyone loved King Robert and didn't dislike when he killed Raegar? I despised Robert. Fat, drunken, lazy whoremonger. Raegar would have made a great King. He wanted Dany dead! A child! Just because she was a Targaryen. I don't miss him.

    Awesome Juice, Mother GreyArea... Can't agree more. Jamie is GRRM's masterpiece indeed. A foul man with foul acts, which are very much relatable.
    How is a Kingslayer worse than Kinslayer? Just because of the power?
    How is incest not tolerated for Lanns but 'celebrated' for Targs? Just because of the power?
    Rob is an oathbreaker, so was Ned. They did wrong things too, but since they had so-called "good reasons", we let go. When Tywin, Jamie or Cersei act due to the same reasons, somehow we frown and judge. Not fair!
    Reminds me of the Assassins' Brotherhood quote:
    "Nothing is Truth... Everything is Permitted"

    I have come to like Jamie Lannister also. Robert and Ned had in fact sworn oaths to the crown. However their two houses were to be joined with the marriage and Lyanna. Robert was betrothed to Lyanna. That betrothal was a contract agreed upon by House Baratheon and House Stark to join their two great houses. Rhaegar "took" Robert's betrothed, Ned's sister. They called banners and responded in the only way they had available to them to protest. There is only so much screwing over these large proud houses will take. What happened with Lyanna and Rhaegar would have caused a war just about any time. Other than that I really enjoyed your impassioned defense of Jamie Lannister. Well done!!!
