Enjoyed the video. As I was pondering the complexity, something struck me: people are usually driven by the thing that most impacted them. Varys was most impacted by the voice he heard from the blue flame. As he began to realize he was positioning himself to actually impact policy, he was driven to do whatever he saw actionable with the goal of avoiding the fate of the blue flame. His hatred of magic was his core principal. Preventing its reemergence would nullify the blue flame.
To a good number of people, one baby looks much like another, so long as the hair color and eye color are the same. It's MUCH easier to pass off one dead baby as another. Rhaenys was three years old, so it would have been EXTREMELY difficult to find a kid who looked enough like her to replace her. That is why Varys did not offer to sneak her out too, because he knew Robert would never have stopped hunting for *both* kids if people knew one of them was missing and/or switched out before the sack of the city. No dobt he presented this an option to Elia that at least ONE of her children could be saved...the true heir to the throne. I don't find this story unbelievable, and it's quite a common trope in fantasy/sword and sorcery stories (and Chinese dramas); the young boy who is switched out shortly after birth and is raised in exile either not knowing or not having anyone around him know he is actually royal by birth, though GRRM disdains such tropes and will probably turn this story on its head, which is why so many people expect that this is not the real Aegon. Ser Kevan Lannister was able to recognize Rhaenys, but recalls that nobody could recognize Aegon. *Tywin* stated that this was Aegon and everyone else took him at his word. Seventeen years later, however, Kevan expresses uncertainty about the identity of the babe in the epilogue of "A Dance of Dragons." Understand, I believe that is likely NOT the real Aegon...the kid ould have died as a baby and JC/Griff covered it up because Faegon is his key to regaining to regaining everything JC/Griff has lost. But I'm not yet convinced that Varys pulled anything here.
I agree that Varys is likely a Blackfyre. Something I've never seen addressed in anyone's GoT theories is the possibility Varys is a faceless man. After all, in the book he is a master of disguise, so much so, that when he tells people his identity, they still can't see it. Sound familiar? Just a thought.
This makes me remind me of season 7 episode 4 when arya reunites with sansa and bran at winterfell, bran says "someone very wealthy wanted to me dead", who can it be? varys? illyrio? and why?
It is more probable that Varys came to Elia right before Clegane got to her, perhaps while he was killing Rhaenys. She was in another room. Which means she wouldn't have had much time to decide. Varys could have said something like your daughter is lost, but i could save Aegon. She agreed, and he switched babies. For me, I find it plausible. **edit** As for the identity of Varys, I've been working on that for awhile. He's definitely from Lys, not just because of Pycelle's description, no a much deeper reason; Varys is a Blackfyre. (I'll have to watch your video on that to see where you are on the Blackfyre subject) But yes, Varys is a Blackfyre. The second rebellion was squashed, which sent them into exile into the free cities. (wink wink) Lys is a free city. As for his parents, I've not narrowed that down. But I would surmise he's a bastard, which would account for him being a slave. Looking at the timeline of when things take place, it's extremely likely he's a BF. Now, most people know the theory of the Red Preistess', royal blood, yadda yadda, so i won't go there. Fast forward, and onto the show, this whole idea with the Golden Company, Varys is connected with them, assuming he's a Blackfyre. So, as far as the show is concerned at least, is that how Varys "betrays" Daenerys? Or will he call an audible on Cersei's plan, and that's how she dies, by the Golden Company betraying her? I'm not sold on the idea that Varys does betray Daenerys, by the way.
@Liz Lee To be fair, Varys would just need a baby boy of about the same age with purple (or a dark blue that can seem purple) and silver hair. This look is quite common in Lys, especially among prostitutes. Find one who doesn't want the kid, make the switch. Could have been done near the beginning of the war, prior to the the siege. They couldn't have done the same with Rhaenys because she was too old. And as to whether Varys had the ability to sneak babies in and out of the Red Keep, with all the stuff he's pulled off I don't think it's outside his capabilities. He snuck Illyrio in and that dude's a fat man with dyed hair. He lived as a gaoler for YEARS with nobody recognizing him. With Aerys doing his Mad King thing, the residents were likely distracted or sticking to their rooms. So, I think the story is plausible. Like Varys could have done it if he wanted to. Whether or not it's true, it's believable enough that people in universe who know about Varys might think he could do it. Which is the important part, I guess.
This is really good. You have pointed out all the problems with Varys and Ilyrio and how their actions are contradictory. I am just about to view Part 2. Anyway I never thought the baby swap by Varys was problematic. It is easy to substitute one baby for another just like Jon did with Mances’ son. No one would have been able to identify his body even if his head wasn’t bashed. I am sure no one left in Roberts court had ever seen him but all of them would know what Rhaeghar’s wife and daughter looked like. So I can see a mother saving her son knowing there was no hope for the daughter. Also she may have been under the impression still that he was the Prince that was promised.
not to mention , as a baby aegon has silver hair and purple eyes just like most of his Family have, so how varys would get a child with valyrian features in westeros ?
GrayArea yes , house celtigar, veleryon, house dayne and targaryen have valryian features but i think a baby from a noble house would be missing right ?
You think Aegon might actually decend from Aegor Rivers? Bittersteel married one of Daemons Blackfyre´s daughters and it is not clear if he had any children. Aegon´s mother could be a Bittersteel/Blackfyre wich would also explain the Golden Company support.
A lot of people question Dany's identity, it would be a cool story beat if Aegon was legit and Dany was the imposter since Dany draws so much of her strength from her ego, her sense of self.
Man, the level of depth and thought in this series is astounding; GRRM has to be insane and just managing it really well; no way could you devote so much effort into a world and still remain in this one lmao.
There has to be a crap ton of Blackfyres running around. According to TWOIAF, Daemon Blackfyre had seven sons by Rohanne of Tyrosh, and daughters besides. Bittersteel even married Daemon's eldest daughter. To say nothing of bastards (Dragonseeds, if you will) and their descendants. So it is not impossible that Varys could be blood of the dragon. Before I die, I need to know what the voice said from the flames !!!
Oh, great. Suffering now the pain and delight of GOT withdrawals. I'm seeing faces and strange places. My imagination is seeking through the sights and sounds of an earlier season of GOT, that was never made. Thank you for taking us there. Another great video. Another great story told.

Liz Lee yeah if varys was alive and real in this modern day hed own nike and 90%of the sweat shops around the world.. but they dont even speak in the show except the one for qyburn an i dont think he spoke even.. but i agree with you in that hes not a hartless psychopath but he is a very calculating and driven character who i think will do any good or horrible deed if it helps his main agenda.. but in the books, the little mice mice just listen and spy,pass/receive notes, steal papers/letters, listen to the people in the red keep in the tunnels and some might even be able to read and write (find an important letter and copy it so its not stolen and no one is the wiser) but as to loving an saving children at the very least in the books he used an sacrificed a common child to put in place of aegon/faegon (possibly killed the kid him self to make his face unrecognizable and blamed it on the mountain but at the least he left the princess and supposedly took egg? why not sacrifice 2 common children if it was his intent on saving the "last" dragons.. he could have taken egg an his sister and helped the queen escape and not let any kids get there faces crushed..varys is a dark character and his motives and agenda are still pretty uncertain but he is def. supporting the blackfyres (aegon) i like him in the show a bit less then in the books (they made him more likable on the show) and hes still one of the most interesting characters with one of the most mysterious back stories i cant wait to read about so all these awesome questions and mysteries can be answered iiiiiiif....! ggrm will release the winds of winter!! before ww3 happens >:( :S

He did said Rhaegar in telling Varys about the council at Harrenhal. No one had seen the Mad King he had been locked up in the red keep. So by telling him the plan he went, and everyone could how Mad he really was. A public appearance said Moe to the Lord's then anything Rhaegar could have said!
Hasan Wilson exactly! As a mom of two, there’s no way I could save one and not the other. I also never understood that if this wasn’t Aegon why wasn’t Elia with Rhaenys?
Hasan Wilson because Aegon was the heir, so he was much more important. And because it’s not as hard to find a baby with similar features as it is to find a suitable double for a three year old child.
Great video I am a bit puzzled by Varys actions if his goal was to bring Dany and her brother to essos and have Dany to rise up. Then it doesn't make sense then if he is sabotaging Dany fight against Cerise by passing on information (Euron attacks on Narrow seas and Casterly Rock)
Always thought that Young Griff was the son of Illyrio and Sarah and is the last Blackfyre. The only thing I have trouble with is that Varys knows of the true parentage of Young Griff, why did he then tell Kevan just before killing him. Seems pointless to tell him a lie only to then kill him.
Varys not telling a dying Kevan that Aegon is a Blackfyre is all the confirmation we need that Young Griff is Aegon Targaryen, son of Rhaegar Targaryen. Even though Jon is likely Rhaegar's second son, Young Griff has a better claim to the Iron Throne. The Golden Company just supports Aegon because they want to go back home and reclaim their lands. The Blackfyre war died when Maelys the Monstrous was killed. Now, the Golden Company will return home with Aegon as king. 1. Aegon is a fake dragon and a cloth dragon because he is not a stereotypical Targaryen but a ruler who fights for duty and compassion. 2. Illyrio likes Aegon because he helped raise the boy like a father, this applies to many genuine adopted fathers. 3. Illyrio's debt of affection is to Varys who is like a brother to him and helped him to become a powerful cheese merchant in Pentos because of his little birds. 4. Daenerys will not be mad at Aegon because books Daenerys really wants her family back and Aegon's existence will make her happy. D&D ruined Daenerys. 5. Varys is not a Blackfyre because he would have been raised by the Golden Company and not have been raised as a slave.
I wouldn't say that keeping Elia and the kids was a mad insurance scheme to stop the Dornish from joining the enemy. He just using them the same was as wards. Taking wards is a common thing in the history of Westeros. The most obvious example is Theon, who was a ward to ensure the good behaviour of his father. I doubt anyone would call Robert or Ned 'mad', maybe other things but not mad.
while i do hope faegon is elia's son, i don't think it's possible and would like a second dance of the dragons/blackfyre rebellion between dany and young griff. but to play devil's advocate, who was there to witness Elia and her son's death besides the mountain?! it's possible va(e)rys snatched the baby and swapped him with the other one.
I've watched this several times. Consider this, Varis climbed thru the hidden passages and got to the nursery. They heard the Mountain coming. The baby swap was made and Varis disappeared thru the hidden passage.
Yes Jamie, of Rhaegar and Viserayas. I was speaking of Rhaegars children, Jon is a half sibling of Rhaegars children and he believed one of his children was the prophecy was about. If Jon is ghe last hero, he could fufill the other profecy also
There are a lot of Valyrian girls in Essos. Not many are High Valyrian, most are the mixed blood Essosi Valyrian, but there are even High Valyrians still there. Mainly in Volantis, which is in Southern Essos.
So when Melisandre said that Varys needs to die in Westeros, what did she mean and does it relate to everything you've said in this video, or is that another plot arc entirely, related more to betraying Dany?
Like kimvara said, "if you are her true friend you have nothing to fear" varys is so flip floppy it's not possible to trust him. Maybe dany is keeping her friends close and her enemies closer. (Same thing with tyrion)
This is where things get most tricky for me between the show and novel. Where are they combining? and where are they inventing? or leaving out parts? N+A=J, R+L=J, the new "Blackfyre", all of these story lines are so blurred now because of this divergence of the story and how the show writers have chosen to deal with it. There is really- now- no concrete ground to build a theory on.
Especially a Dornish woman. She would definitely want to protect her daughter as well. I could see a last minute baby swap after tywin entered the city. He did counsel against it. That's as far as I will give it in my head
There's a big question mark on Varys for me too. I think a telling sign is...There has been several opportunities for Varys to tell Dany that Ned Stark tried and succeeded in convincing King Robert to stop her assassination. She has mentioned it several times and Varys says nothing.
In the books Ser Barristan tells her about Ned.. and how he objected to it. Her response is “did you forget about my brothers children” basically like so what.. like she doesn’t even care... Varys is a schemer
GrayArea I know. He's one of those characters that that I like and want him to survive then he switches up with some hinky stuff. He will get himself killed.
Does maesters conspiracy has anything with fall of targaryens ?no one knows if aegon was killed by mountain everyone beleived on tywins word only and what about theory aegon was switched with identical child before elia and kids were killed.

As he began to realize he was positioning himself to actually impact policy, he was driven to do whatever he saw actionable with the goal of avoiding the fate of the blue flame. His hatred of magic was his core principal. Preventing its reemergence would nullify the blue flame.
You are assuming that Varys told the truth about that. In the chapter where he killed Kevan, his voice was noted to deepen. He might not be a eunuch.
Seventeen years later, however, Kevan expresses uncertainty about the identity of the babe in the epilogue of "A Dance of Dragons."
Understand, I believe that is likely NOT the real Aegon...the kid ould have died as a baby and JC/Griff covered it up because Faegon is his key to regaining to regaining everything JC/Griff has lost. But I'm not yet convinced that Varys pulled anything here.
I love when get my mind thiking like crazy. Thanks👏👏❤❤❤
Aerys saw plots and conspiracies in every shadow and Varys was there to point out any the King had missed.
There are ppl with Valyrian features in Westeros. Especially on DragonStone and Driftmark
GrayArea yes , house celtigar, veleryon, house dayne and targaryen have valryian features but i think a baby from a noble house would be missing
right ?
marcos targaryen they aren’t all from Noble houses... many Bastards everywhere... could be any welp anywhere
marcos targaryen UM DISGUISED
In a story WITH PEOPLE WHO CAN TAKE FACES AND GREENSEERS ITS NOT HARD TO IMAGINE A TARGARYEN IS WALKING AROUND
Woohoo thanks for another amazing video! Can’t wait for the next ☝️ one! Your my #1 female GOT TH-camr!! 💯
“Schemes and plots are the same thing.” Tyrion
Oh, great. Suffering now the pain and delight of GOT withdrawals. I'm seeing faces and strange places. My imagination is seeking through the sights and sounds of an earlier season of GOT, that was never made. Thank you for taking us there. Another great video. Another great story told.
hes way more daring cunning and kills people himself when it fits one of his many end goals in the books..he also held a few positions in kings landing an who know where else with different looks and different names.. he could have released ned but didn't and releasing tyrion was just an extra on top of planting old garthgreenhand gold coins.. he was a lot more sinister in the books if you compared him to the show.. still a great character and i cant wait until winds of winter!!! :D if its ever released :S south parks right about alot of things.. lol its coming!great video grey area jus noticed this pop up in my notification and im reading the iron druid series along with the dresden files so i haven't needed asoiaf videos to cure binges between the shows lol great video grey ill watch the last couple months worth of stuff an give you thumbs up's!
Liz Lee in the books he cuts out his little mice tung's before the became one of his little spies
Seeing Varys and Oberon speak is
so good
Thank you for being here through the long night! I always watch your videos!🔥🔥🔥I think that some theories will be in the book ... BUT not the show ... we only have 6 episodes to explain EVERYTHING! #FREEGHOST 🔥🔥🔥😍😍😍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
If this theory is for the TV show it is far too complicated to play out in six episodes.
I think you are spot on with this one!
Why would he only replace aegon and not rhaeney's too why would Elia only buy life for one child and not demand the life of both
Hasan Wilson exactly!
Never trust spiders.
Hasan Wilson neverrrrr
Can't wait for part 2! Yes gray I think that Varys is a blackfyre too.
I agree with you. Varys has to be a Targaryan/Blackfyre. Why else would he shave all his hair off.
Thanks again Gray!
we r all stoically waiting for a debate between you and the OOTGH - especially on r+l
Red CD lol not going to happen... it would serve no purpose
@@GrayArea
You mean aside from introducing people to alternate theories challenging your own?
If Jon is ghe last hero, he could fufill the other profecy also
Twyin would be able to recognize a baby he never saw before?
Excactly
Varys could also be a descendant of Bittersteel which would explain why he wants to put a Blackfyre on the throne.
★★★★★ Outstanding, thank you so much for sharing
Hola chica, GOOD STUFF n Varis as a Targerian.. Love it when u give us the FACTS from the books...I believe
But there were no valerian girls in essos. Remember mad king sent his courts an to look for one
There are a lot of Valyrian girls in Essos. Not many are High Valyrian, most are the mixed blood Essosi Valyrian, but there are even High Valyrians still there. Mainly in Volantis, which is in Southern Essos.
Those of High Valyrian descent pride themselves on their pure blood of Old Valyria.
Aegon is called Faegons because he's not the son of Aerys. In ADWD Quaithe warns Dany about the Mummers Dragon.
Please do a video or comment on the theory that Littlefinger did not die and is a faceless man!
I second the notion!
