Jim Dandy (the male singer) was like a predecessor of David Lee Roth, a showman with long blond hair (who also played the washboard on a couple songs....) and used a lot of unique expressions (mostly crass) and story telling. I have a personal history with BOA, as my band opened for them three nights at a Fargo bar in 1986 (Jim Dandy and rhythm guitarist Rickie Lee Reynolds, plus some amazing younger players) - I also ran sound for them, and taped some incredible live performances, including one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard. I grew up listening to them in the 70's in my 74 nova with a craig power play 8 track stereo saw em live twice at Sturgis in the early/mid 80's . Still one of the best live shows I've ever seen. This was actually a cover version. Laverne Baker did the original version back in 1956. James "Jim Dandy" Mangrum was reportedly the inspiration behind David Lee Roth of Van Halen. Other great BOA songs are Uncle Lijiah, Lord Have Mercy on my Soul, and Son of a Gun. They also did versions of The Beatles' Taxman and The Byrds' So You Want to be a Rock and Roll Star.

This was one of my favorite tunes growing up in the 70's! A southern contemporary of Black Oak Arkansas was a band from Springfield, Missouri called Ozark Mountain Daredevils. They had a harmonica-driven 1974 hit "If You Wanna Get to Heaven" that's a lot of fun to listen to, and a bigger hit already mentioned "Jackie Blue" from 1975 - not so southern sounding but I think you'll enjoy it. Awesome !!!!! I can't believe someone finally played some Black Oak Arkansas. Now I'm going to have to give you some trivia: The drummer (Tommy Eldridge) ended up being the drummer for several big bands including Ozzy Osbourne. I'm sure you know by now the singer's name ( nickname ) is Jim Dandy. I believe something his dad would call him taken from an old western gambler. I think in an interview he said it was Diamond Jim Dandy. David Lee Roth stage presence was inspired by Jim Dandy and if you watch some of Black Oak Arkansas performances you will totally understand. Black Oak Arkansas was actually a very up-and-coming band but they're touring was seriously restricted due to them being on probation because they stole their Pa's and amplifiers from a local high school and got caught and put on probation so they could not tour as much as management and record companies wanted. Personally I think it was the inability to tour Nationwide on a regular basis that put the kibosh on their career. Record companies of that time totally wanted bands to tour to make money and promote.
I live about 20 miles from Black Oak. Ran into Jim Dandy in the grocery store a few years back. Nice guy. These guys were one of the best LIVE bands you would ever see. They had everyone dancing, just like you guys. The female singer is a lady named Ruby Starr, she led her own band called Grey Ghost.
In the mid 70s, I drove by the compound where the whole BOA band lived together in Oakland, Ark. It looked like Fort Apache, and you couldn't see nothin'.
You need to see the live video with Ruby Starr. She is the one singing Go Jim Dandy. A country song along these lines is The Statler Brothers Along Came Jones., I think both refer to the western serial shorts that ran before the main movie and always ended in a cliff hanger waiting for the hero to show up.
I don't recall the Statler Brothers doing "Along Came Jones". I think you are thinking of Ray Stevens. I could be wrong though. I highly recommend both artists though. Jay and Amber, I bet, will be mesmerized by the Statlers. A great quartet with an even greater sound. 2 out of 4 of them are actually brothers. Anything by them is good. A couple good songs by them would be "Flowers on the Wall" or "Charlotte's Web" or "I'll Go To My Grave Loving You". Ray Stevens is best known for his funny songs, like "The Streak"or "Shriner's Convention" and the previously mentioned "Along Came Jones", but also has many serious ones too, like his grammy winning "Everything is Beautiful". You could also check out his duet with Dolly Parton, "Happy, Happy Birthday, Baby", which showcases Rays vocals, and sense of humor too, Plus, Dolly is... Well, Dolly.

I saw them open for Foghat and Ronny Montrose (w/Hagar) back in the mid 70's. Was a young teen, hanging out in the balcony with the guy working the spotlight. Whatever he smoked with me put me into orbit...

Wow...yesterday you reacted to the drummer from Tool and I commented that you should check out a drum solo video from Tommy Aldridge from Whitesnake. Ironically, Tommy was the drummer for Black Oak Arkansas before he joined Whitesnake! This was a fun song. Y'all should check out some Dr. Hook, Blackfoot, and Savoy Brown.
I saw BOA in the early 70's as a warmup band for I can't remember. But what I CAN remember is the lead singer coming on the stage with long white hair and running and jumping all over the stage throughout the entire set. What a showman!!

The girl singing with them is Ruby Starr. She was like 4'11". Tiny,but with a mighty voice! Her bright red curly hair was bigger then she was! It's good to hear this once again. I've seen them do it live so many times. Hehe. These guys are old friends of mine. I went on tour with them and Ruby several times. They used to send me Christmas cards every year,and photos all the time. We lost track of eachother years ago though when Ruby died. I went back to England and they stayed in their own little town,Black Oak. I still miss Ruby and Grey Ghost(her band),and BOA even now.
Ruby Starr was the women belting out "go Jim Dandy!", she sang w/ Black Oak a bunch on tour I think, had a career of her own that never lifted off as much as maybe it should've. Jim Dandy was the lead singer, a wild eyed, wild voiced, front-man extraordinaire. Great song, cool band.
I made a comment on BOA's FACEBOOK page a couple of weeks ago and Jim Dandy Mangrum replied to me in person! How cool is that! He gave David Lee Roth 90% of what he was in Van Halen.

This is another great remake of a 1950's song, originally done by LaVern Baker . Saw Black Oak Arkansas at the California Jam festival in 1974. A fun band.

Thanks for the shout out! I was the Tour Manager during those days and the band had a great influence on the industry. The ladies voice was Ruby Starr who did her own albums and unfortunately passed some years back. The album was produced by Tom Dowd (just Google!). Jim Dandy was a cover of the original Jim Dandy by blues singer Lavern Baker in 1955, and the drummer was Tommy Aldridge who went on to play with Ozzy Osbourne and Whitesnake. Three of the guitar players, Rickie, Jimmy and Stanley have passed away but BOA lives on in the music. Rock in Peace, LD

My favorite Southern Rock Band who drew huge crowds in the 70s, this is the only song they did that made it top 40. UNCLE ELIJAH is a great Black Oak tune. "Fancy Nancy" another great tune.

Finally! My all-time favorite group. I have seen them live a couple dozen times. You can still see Jim Dandy as they still play live shows. And Ruby Starr was fantastic. She toured with BOA in the 70's. As others have said, Lord Have Mercy on My Soul is a must hear. My personal favorite is Forgive and Forget. And I love Ruby Starr's cover of The Beatles' Maybe I'm Amazed.
This song is a cover of a 50s hit. My very first concert was Black Oak, this was back when you got 3 bands performing. The opener was Stories, followed by Jo Jo Gunne then Black Oak was the headliner. The lead singers name is Jim Dandy. 2 of my favorites are Uncle Lijah and When Electricity Came To Arkansas! When Electricity Came To Arkansas is an instrumental but they use a unique instrument that I'd like to see if you can figure out what it is. I think Amber will figure it out before Jay!! 😃❤😃

Another good band is The (Young) Rascals - they got rid of "young" part way through their career. Songs like: A Beautiful Morning, Lonely Too Long, Groovin', and Good Lovin'. They are a group that influenced others.
The Young Rascals was the second concert i went to in 1968 ! They had a rotating stage in the middle of the basketball court which was cool to me . The Monkees and Jimi Hendrix was my first concert i was 12

Wow! This really takes me back in time. In 1971 I was a student at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville Illinois. I was heavily involved in television production classes there. We recorded a weekly 30 minute show called "Tube Trip" that ran on a station in St. Louis on Saturday nights. We got credit for one of our production classes for being a part of the crew for that show. We tried to get local talent, and also any up and coming groups that might be appearing in St. Louis to come over to SIU and record a show with us. And one time we actually got Black Oak Arkansas to agree to come to our campus and do a show at our studios. They were just starting to get some national attention and were willing to do a show like ours to keep pushing their brand. It was awesome. I ran one of the large studio cameras and at one point we took a 15 minute break while their manager decided which song should be next. While we were waiting in the studio, the bass guitar player came over to me at my camera and said, "Hey man, how do you work this thing? Show me how to run this camera." I showed him how and he grabbed the camera and started zooming and panning around the set. Then he said, "This is fun. You know what? I'd like to run the camera on the next song. Think I could?" I said, "Sure, but who'd play bass?" He thought for a moment, then he grinned and said, "Hey, can you play guitar?" I said, "No, but I sure wish I could. That'd be cool." He said, " Yeah, but I guess they wouldn't let us do that anyway. Well, thanks man. Have fun and get some good shots of me, OK?" I said, " You know I will." And he went back to the set and a few minutes later we finished recording the show. Great afternoon "at school", and I almost got to play bass for Black Oak! Ah, memories. . .

Underappreciated band, though one of their greatest contributions was discovering the unbelievable Shawn Lane and bringing him on board as a guitarist at fifteen years of age. Shawn is absolutely one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and was possibly an even better pianist. Do yourselves a favor and look him up.
That high female voice saying "Go Jim Dandy" is Ruby Starr. She was the perfect counterpart to the raunchiness of Jim "Dandy" Mangrum. She was a singer on her own right but is best remembered as part of Black Oak Arkansas. She died at the age of 45 of lung and brain cancer.

I've been a big fan of Black Oak Arkansas for decades, then had the great pleasure of seeing them in concert in '78, along with the incredible Alvin Lee with his (then) band Ten Years Later. My husband was in his last months of his enlistment (69-73) and stationed in Abilene, Texas. Some of his buddies were from just north of Amarillo and they drove up to see BOA play! It was his very first concert and he loved it!! Five months later when he had gotten out and they were touring in our hometown, Chicago, of course he went to see them!
An early date with my future wife at an evening concert (free too I think) at Lake Alice in the center of campus at the University of Florida, a blanket on the lawn, a bottle of wine and BOA. Saw them when this became a hit. They were on Tour with Three Dog Night. They literally tore the place down they were rocking so much. Jim Dandy Mangrum's Waist Length Hair as he danced across stage, the Wild Screaming and beautiful Voice of "Ruby Starr", and my monster Drummer Hero Tommy Aldridge.
I remember this so vividly. Mike Truet playing this in the back of his Ford Pinto. Steve Thornton singing with it and Loretta Russell doing the Go Jim Dandy Parts.
They were in the very first concert I ever attended. 14 years old, City Park Stadium, New Orleans, Montrose with Sammy Haggar, The J. Geils Band. Peter Frampton, Jim Dandy and Black Oak Arkansas and some other bands I can't recall. 1975. An eye opener for sure lol.
I saw Black Oak in I believe late '75. It was as part of a 6 band all night Christmas concert in the newly built Market Square Arena here in Indy (Now long since torn down with a plaque at the spot commemorating it was the site of Elvis' last concert). Other bands in that concert were Bob Seger, Rush, Mahogany Rush etc. A great time was had by all lol.
@Bloodewing I have fond memories of Market Square Arena. I'm not from Indy but attended many concerts there (had relatives in town). I saw Zeppelin three times in three different cities, the last time being at Market Square Arena in '77. Got my first (& only) whiff of tear gas there as they let the crowd in. Thank goodness that didn't ruin a truly great concert. Saw Robert Plant there a couple of times in the 80's during his solo career. Also when he & Jimmy Page reunited for that fantastic tour they did together in '94 (?). Wonderful memories. I was fortunate to see so many great shows, great artists, including Hendrix three months before he died, at Roberts Stadium in Evansville. Stood leaning against the stage taking pictures of him. During his encore he leaned down to hand me his guitar pick but as I reached up to take it, a big burly guy jostled me aside & grabbed it instead. Still makes me mad! That's also where I saw Zeppelin the first time & other concerts..Deep Purple, Joe Walsh..Alice Cooper..so many. Roberts Stadium wasn't quite as nice as Market Square Arena (older, of course) but it didn't really matter once the lights went down. It's gone now too. Thanks for mentioning the plaque that's at MSA's site now. I was aware that Elvis's last performance was there but didn't know about the plaque. I saw Elvis in Nashville in '73 & in Louisville in '74. I didn't see that last show but I'm glad I saw him when he was healthier & seemed happier. Market Square Arena held a special poignance for being his last stop..what a monumental icon he was. Without him there might not have been all those great bands we saw that came after the got the ball rolling, or not in the same form anyway. And when I think about all the live music, from so many artists, that echoed off those walls & the walls of stadiums & arenas around the country, they & their memories seem almost sacred to me. This was actually a cover version. Laverne Baker did the original version back in 1956. James "Jim Dandy" Mangrum was reportedly the inspiration behind David Lee Roth of Van Halen. Other great BOA songs are Uncle Lijiah, Lord Have Mercy on my Soul, and Son of a Gun. They also did versions of The Beatles' Taxman and The Byrds' So You Want to be a Rock and Roll Star.

This was one of my favorite tunes growing up in the 70's! A southern contemporary of Black Oak Arkansas was a band from Springfield, Missouri called Ozark Mountain Daredevils. They had a harmonica-driven 1974 hit "If You Wanna Get to Heaven" that's a lot of fun to listen to, and a bigger hit already mentioned "Jackie Blue" from 1975 - not so southern sounding but I think you'll enjoy it. The drummer (Tommy Eldridge) ended up being the drummer for several big bands including Ozzy Osbourne.
I'm sure you know by now the singer's name ( nickname ) is Jim Dandy. I believe something his dad would call him taken from an old western gambler. I think in an interview he said it was Diamond Jim Dandy.
David Lee Roth stage presence was inspired by Jim Dandy and if you watch some of Black Oak Arkansas performances you will totally understand.
Black Oak Arkansas was actually a very up-and-coming band but they're touring was seriously restricted due to them being on probation because they stole their Pa's and amplifiers from a local high school and got caught and put on probation so they could not tour as much as management and record companies wanted.
Personally I think it was the inability to tour Nationwide on a regular basis that put the kibosh on their career. Record companies of that time totally wanted bands to tour to make money and promote.
I live about 20 miles from Black Oak. Ran into Jim Dandy in the grocery store a few years back. Nice guy. These guys were one of the best LIVE bands you would ever see. They had everyone dancing, just like you guys.
The female singer is a lady named Ruby Starr, she led her own band called Grey Ghost.

In the mid 70s, I drove by the compound where the whole BOA band lived together in Oakland, Ark. It looked like Fort Apache, and you couldn't see nothin'.
You need to see the live video with Ruby Starr. She is the one singing Go Jim Dandy. A country song along these lines is The Statler Brothers Along Came Jones., I think both refer to the western serial shorts that ran before the main movie and always ended in a cliff hanger waiting for the hero to show up.

Jay and Amber, I bet, will be mesmerized by the Statlers. A great quartet with an even greater sound. 2 out of 4 of them are actually brothers. Anything by them is good. A couple good songs by them would be "Flowers on the Wall" or "Charlotte's Web" or "I'll Go To My Grave Loving You".
Ray Stevens is best known for his funny songs, like "The Streak"or "Shriner's Convention" and the previously mentioned "Along Came Jones", but also has many serious ones too, like his grammy winning "Everything is Beautiful". You could also check out his duet with Dolly Parton, "Happy, Happy Birthday, Baby", which showcases Rays vocals, and sense of humor too, Plus, Dolly is... Well, Dolly.

I saw them open for Foghat and Ronny Montrose (w/Hagar) back in the mid 70's. Was a young teen, hanging out in the balcony with the guy working the spotlight. Whatever he smoked with me put me into orbit...

Wow...yesterday you reacted to the drummer from Tool and I commented that you should check out a drum solo video from Tommy Aldridge from Whitesnake. Ironically, Tommy was the drummer for Black Oak Arkansas before he joined Whitesnake! This was a fun song. Y'all should check out some Dr. Hook, Blackfoot, and Savoy Brown.

I saw BOA in the early 70's as a warmup band for I can't remember. But what I CAN remember is the lead singer coming on the stage with long white hair and running and jumping all over the stage throughout the entire set. What a showman!!

These guys are old friends of mine. I went on tour with them and Ruby several times. They used to send me Christmas cards every year,and photos all the time. We lost track of eachother years ago though when Ruby died. I went back to England and they stayed in their own little town,Black Oak.
I still miss Ruby and Grey Ghost(her band),and BOA even now.
Ruby Starr was the women belting out "go Jim Dandy!", she sang w/ Black Oak a bunch on tour I think, had a career of her own that never lifted off as much as maybe it should've. Jim Dandy was the lead singer, a wild eyed, wild voiced, front-man extraordinaire. Great song, cool band.

This is another great remake of a 1950's song, originally done by LaVern Baker . Saw Black Oak Arkansas at the California Jam festival in 1974. A fun band.

It was wonderful to see all those bands. The organizers of the festival don't get nearly the credit they deserve for how well the event was run. The use of railroad tracks to move various stages in and out was brilliant!
Thanks for the shout out! I was the Tour Manager during those days and the band had a great influence on the industry. The ladies voice was Ruby Starr who did her own albums and unfortunately passed some years back. The album was produced by Tom Dowd (just Google!). Jim Dandy was a cover of the original Jim Dandy by blues singer Lavern Baker in 1955, and the drummer was Tommy Aldridge who went on to play with Ozzy Osbourne and Whitesnake. Three of the guitar players, Rickie, Jimmy and Stanley have passed away but BOA lives on in the music. Rock in Peace, LD

Finally! My all-time favorite group. I have seen them live a couple dozen times. You can still see Jim Dandy as they still play live shows. And Ruby Starr was fantastic. She toured with BOA in the 70's. As others have said, Lord Have Mercy on My Soul is a must hear. My personal favorite is Forgive and Forget. And I love Ruby Starr's cover of The Beatles' Maybe I'm Amazed.

The opener was Stories, followed by Jo Jo Gunne then Black Oak was the headliner. The lead singers name is Jim Dandy. 2 of my favorites are Uncle Lijah and When Electricity Came To Arkansas! When Electricity Came To Arkansas is an instrumental but they use a unique instrument that I'd like to see if you can figure out what it is. I think Amber will figure it out before Jay!! 😃❤😃

Wow! This really takes me back in time. In 1971 I was a student at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville Illinois. I was heavily involved in television production classes there. We recorded a weekly 30 minute show called "Tube Trip" that ran on a station in St. Louis on Saturday nights. We got credit for one of our production classes for being a part of the crew for that show. We tried to get local talent, and also any up and coming groups that might be appearing in St. Louis to come over to SIU and record a show with us. And one time we actually got Black Oak Arkansas to agree to come to our campus and do a show at our studios. They were just starting to get some national attention and were willing to do a show like ours to keep pushing their brand. It was awesome. I ran one of the large studio cameras and at one point we took a 15 minute break while their manager decided which song should be next. While we were waiting in the studio, the bass guitar player came over to me at my camera and said, "Hey man, how do you work this thing? Show me how to run this camera." I showed him how and he grabbed the camera and started zooming and panning around the set. Then he said, "This is fun. You know what? I'd like to run the camera on the next song. Think I could?" I said, "Sure, but who'd play bass?" He thought for a moment, then he grinned and said, "Hey, can you play guitar?" I said, "No, but I sure wish I could. That'd be cool." He said, " Yeah, but I guess they wouldn't let us do that anyway. Well, thanks man. Have fun and get some good shots of me, OK?" I said, " You know I will." And he went back to the set and a few minutes later we finished recording the show. Great afternoon "at school", and I almost got to play bass for Black Oak! Ah, memories. . .

Wow, Jim Dandy and Frankenstein on the same day. I remember when these songs came out. They were both favorites when I was a little kid listening to my older brothers cranking them out in their rooms. And yes you can definitely see how DLR took his stage presence from Jim Dandy.

Underappreciated band, though one of their greatest contributions was discovering the unbelievable Shawn Lane and bringing him on board as a guitarist at fifteen years of age. Shawn is absolutely one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and was possibly an even better pianist. Do yourselves a favor and look him up.

My husband was in his last months of his enlistment (69-73) and stationed in Abilene, Texas. Some of his buddies were from just north of Amarillo and they drove up to see BOA play! It was his very first concert and he loved it!! Five months later when he had gotten out and they were touring in our hometown, Chicago, of course he went to see them!
An early date with my future wife at an evening concert (free too I think) at Lake Alice in the center of campus at the University of Florida, a blanket on the lawn, a bottle of wine and BOA. Over 40 years ago but still a nice memory. I recommend "Strong Enough to Be Gentle". Thanks for sharing your reaction to BOA. :-)

Saw them when this became a hit. They were on Tour with Three Dog Night. They literally tore the place down they were rocking so much. Jim Dandy Mangrum's Waist Length Hair as he danced across stage, the Wild Screaming and beautiful Voice of "Ruby Starr", and my monster Drummer Hero Tommy Aldridge.

They were in the very first concert I ever attended. 14 years old, City Park Stadium, New Orleans, Montrose with Sammy Haggar, The J. Geils Band. Peter Frampton, Jim Dandy and Black Oak Arkansas and some other bands I can't recall. 1975. An eye opener for sure lol.

I saw Black Oak in I believe late '75. It was as part of a 6 band all night Christmas concert in the newly built Market Square Arena here in Indy (Now long since torn down with a plaque at the spot commemorating it was the site of Elvis' last concert). Other bands in that concert were Bob Seger, Rush, Mahogany Rush etc. A great time was had by all lol.

I have fond memories of Market Square Arena. I'm not from Indy but attended many concerts there (had relatives in town).
I saw Zeppelin three times in three different cities, the last time being at Market Square Arena in '77. Got my first (& only) whiff of tear gas there as they let the crowd in. Thank goodness that didn't ruin a truly great concert.
Saw Robert Plant there a couple of times in the 80's during his solo career. Also when he & Jimmy Page reunited for that fantastic tour they did together in '94 (?). Wonderful memories.
I was fortunate to see so many great shows, great artists, including Hendrix three months before he died, at Roberts Stadium in Evansville. Stood leaning against the stage taking pictures of him. During his encore he leaned down to hand me his guitar pick but as I reached up to take it, a big burly guy jostled me aside & grabbed it instead. Still makes me mad!
That's also where I saw Zeppelin the first time & other concerts..Deep Purple, Joe Walsh..Alice Cooper..so many. Roberts Stadium wasn't quite as nice as Market Square Arena (older, of course) but it didn't really matter once the lights went down. It's gone now too.
Thanks for mentioning the plaque that's at MSA's site now. I was aware that Elvis's last performance was there but didn't know about the plaque. I saw Elvis in Nashville in '73 & in Louisville in '74. I didn't see that last show but I'm glad I saw him when he was healthier & seemed happier.
Market Square Arena held a special poignance for being his last stop..what a monumental icon he was. Without him there might not have been all those great bands we saw that came after the got the ball rolling, or not in the same form anyway.
And when I think about all the live music, from so many artists, that echoed off those walls & the walls of stadiums & arenas around the country, they & their memories seem almost sacred to me.

@@deborahcornell171 MSA was a great venue for concerts, and I too saw so many great bands there. Anyone of a certain age here felt a piece of theirself was gone when they tore it down. You're welcome for the trip 👍
