There are a few videos on here showing how to change the HES. You need to lock the engine at TDC, then make sure you have the pulley fitted correctly, the tin shield behind the pulley is the HES interrupter, you need to make that’s in the correct position. A lot easier if you slacken the alternator so you don’t have tension on the belt. The pipe trapping the belt is a breather, just take it off to remove the belt if you need to, there’s an O ring behind the bottom fitting. I did my recently, slowly, slowly, and you’ll get there
It’s nice to hear it’s a breather that can be easily removed. I’ll come back to it with the timing box to make sure I’ve got it all aligned correctly. It all felt like it went back in correctly but where I didn’t have the HES bolts torqued correctly I think I lost timing. Cheers for the advice.
Once you've been succesfull in setting the timing correctly, can you post it or make a video on how you've done it? I am in the process of setting my own as well. I saw a method to do this with a diy made box with parts from radioshack. But i don't have that her in NL. So i tried to do it with a voltmeter/multimeter. Put the engine on TDC and turn the HES to the point where it jyst pops to 11,... volts. It seems however that this comes verry exact and this method does not feel verry exact. People also said if you rougly got it right, the computer will auto adjust the timing while riding ( it can be that you'll have to open the throttle fully twice to signel comp there is a new hess sensor before you start it. So with ignition on). But mine definitly doesn't do that (r1100gs 97), but perhaps yource will.
Hey! I bought my bmw r1100r with this issue and I bought the little led machine ( I'm in NL, Utrecht) and I try to use this alignment. According to me is in the right spot but is running terrible in idle as if the sensor is broken (has a new one) I have some videos to share. Hopefully he fix it already.

I'm looking at building that little timing box next, once that's done I'll use it to set the timing. I'll record it all and post it up once its done.

hi it is all simple but were to get the testing box???@@martinpedrazapardo7770
What sort of fault/cutouts did you have? I have a 99 r1100rs that has issues.@@martinpedrazapardo7770
Always use a control box
