I just went thru the same process with my 2005 Matrix. Random misfire on one and two. No codes, but I could see the misfire on live data. I could not find the source of the problem. One day went to start, and no compression in #2 at all. Looked under valve cover, and an intake was stuck open. Used a bore scope and while there was lots of carbon, there was no witness marks. Was about to replace the engine, but thought I would pull the plastic intake so see why the valve would not close. To my surprise, I found 2 pieces of plastic in intakes 1 and 2. In the case of cylinder 2, it had dropped under the valve and it would not close. I rotated the engine and got the plastic out. I found that there is a plastic baffle in the intake that had broken apart. I broke apart and removed what was left of the baffle and put it back together. Luckily no bent valve. Great even compression. No random misfire. Over 290,000 km and it runs great. The engine used to have a bit of a rattle, but that is gone too. I guess it was the plastic baffle in the intake that was making the rattle.
90 Toyota Corolla 5 speed 1.8 Mines got a rattle to it. Every time Im About to shift right at 4rpm, it makes a raddel, but I wouldn't think it was the vales.
I don't know what update about since it two year. My wild guess head gasket failed between two cyclinder. Nice video i learn something new about listening starter motor stress sound.
Sucks. I have a 2009 Corolla at around 120k miles. Got 2 opinions from the dealership and another mechanic both saying to replace the engine. Changed the spark plugs and coils and seems to still shake.
So I have a question a buddy of mines sold me a 2002 Toyota Corolla but it has a missfire and he said it was the coils so does all 4 of the coils need to be changed. And can you send me a link to what coils I need to buy? I seen ones with metal ends then other with plastic ends I’m confused.
Go to autozone and get the coils. They'll give you the ones you need. Typically I only replace the coil that's bad. Don't be surprised if the new coils don't fix it. I see this all the time where cars get sold saying they only need this one simple thing... that's far from the truth. If it's a simple problem why don't they fix it instead of selling it?
Be interesting to remove the valve cover and see if the 1/2 valve springs or whatever are ok. I know my GF's Malibu likes to blow out rocker arm bolts :)
Last night before i went to bed i was thinking.... Maybe i should of removed the valve cover to check those valves . under load the car drives decent , thats why i figured the valve springs should be ok. Only at idle is when you feel the misfires.its like at idle the compression is bleeding off faster that it can make it.
@@themechanic6117 Be great if you had a scope to put down the spark plug hole and see what it looks like. Perhaps its carbon build up on the valves? Make a good follow up to this video :)
Excuse my ignorance, still learning about engines and stuff. If intake valves are leaking compression, that means they're not closing/sealing right? Could that be because valve clearances are unmaintained and got too tight? Hope that's not a dumb question.
@@themechanic6117 right now it drives ok, but randomly it shakes like it's misfiring then it goes away, check engine light did Not come on but I put a scan tool anyways and it's reading p0301 pd, not sure what's the issue
Sorry, I missed the diagnosis, what is it? Intake valves aren't sealing? Is that what you were saying? you cut the video before completing your sentence.
It's much cheaper just to change all the coils all at the same time. Anyone with the least bit of mechanical experience should be able to do DIY this within 1.5 hours max (2.5 hours if replacing the spark plugs as well). Total cost for both 4 new spark plugs and 4 new coils should be around $100 ~ $110 USD. I did the PVC valve and the MAF sensor at the same time as I had done zero maintenance on my Rav4 over the last 6 years. Total cost including a used battery was around $200 total. The hardest part is diagnosing the problem correctly! Fixing the problem is the easy part.

Great diagnostics.
Thanks , lets see if it ends up in the scrapper....its sad because the AC still works 😂
Man that's some damn good backyard diagnosis J!
Thank you. Knocking them out one at a time 👍

Yes the starter sounds can tell alot . Unfortunately I never heard back from the owner about this one
It sounds to be related to the vvti system, this can make the the holed seem to be loosing comp due to bad actuation on the cams
Needs a little more than a coil. Nice work
It'll be fine... Just needs a rev up tune up lol
Thanks Jon. Really like your real life vids...and your sense of humor!
Thank you , i appreciate it.
Any updates on the taped up rolla? Great video
I think the owner hasnt done anything with it. Its just been parked
Solid diagnosis. :)
Thanks, scotty kilmer would be crying 😂
That sucks. It's a Toyota. It should have lasted longer than 172k. I wonder what happened with the valves that caused that to happen.
Dont know what caused it but i can tell this car lacked maintenance
Where you been bro! I've been waiting. Lol. Jk good to see your still doing your thing. Keep up the good work.
Ive been uploading a ton of videos, make sure you got the bell clicked to be notified

Currently have that problem changed the ignition coils and spark plugs but it doesn’t seem to work
Ever fix the problem mines doing the same
@@sliceofbutter6766 nope. Ended up buying a whole new engine for my car. I got a good deal for $500 on an engine with only 50k miles
Thanks for the reply! That was a hell of a deal

Yes im suspecting carbon build up.

Yes the valves arent sealing. It could be a problem with the rocker assembly, carbon build up or even a bent valve can cause that
@@themechanic6117 I have a problem with my 2009 Corolla, I can't accelerate beyond 60kmph. It seems like the engine drags whenever I am accelerating.
Check for a dirty mass air flow sensor or a clogged catalytic converter
super excellent job man. being the condition of the car, it's probably not worth fixing. Does that car use the 14 mm spark plugs?
Its going to either get a used engine or end up in the junk yard. Yes i believe the plugs were 14mm
@@themechanic6117 you ever seen any problems with those engines before?
Honestly i dont see many toyotas in my area. Lately ive been having bad luck. The last few toyotas ive looked at have had some major issues
So it needs a head gask right
Good diag. More than likely the car will go to the scrapper.
Unless they can find a shop to change the engine for cheap
I have the same situation right now and I replace the coil and spark plugs
Did it fix your issue?

When it doubt...use duct tape lol
I would go with more duct tape for win. 😅
😂😂 there's nothing duct tape cant fix

Good video, I don't think its a 08 model though.
Its a 2009
Great job Jonathan! Do they really have tape holding on the body kit? 😳😂😂
Yeah 😂
@Barry Weaver so I see 👍😂😂😂

Put the original coil from the dealership simple
Not simple. A coil will not fix this
@@themechanic6117 so what fix it?
Remove cylinder head to do a valve job
