When the Galactica broke her back on her last jump, I felt the air come out of me and my heart just felt crushed. You knew she was done... and it just broke your heart... And I can't argue with Enterprise being number 1. For me, the original movie ship (non-Kelvin timeline) will always be my favorite incarnation of that ship. When you watch 'The Motion Picture' and imagine you don't know what the ship looks like, the 'tour' by space pod is amazing. You get hints of what the ship looks like as they go around it... and then you get the big reveal of what she looks like without spacedock in the way as the music hits that loud credenza... it almost brings tears to your eyes. And as McCoy said: you treat her like a lady, she'll always bring you home... Even if she doesn't always make it with you.

I've always loved the Eagle as well. Space 1999's "science" and "physics" was crap and full of holes large enough to drop the moon through. But the Eagle. Ahhhhhh THE EAGLE. I've never seen a more fully realized "near future" ship design. Every module - you know exactly what it's there for and what it does. The ability to hot-swap the center module for a variety of missions and cargo loads makes it the ultimate "space truck". It looks cool without being "pretty". It looks real in a way that makes you think that if given enough budget it would be the natural evolution of NASA design philosophy.
The White Star is great and looks incredible from the outside. We just didn't get quite enough of the interior for me to really fall in love with it like I did with Trek ships or the Galactica, though.

One ship I would put on my list comes from a franchise not quite so often discussed when it comes to its spaceship designs, and that's the Nostromo. With the cathedral-like spires of the refinery it pulls, it's just one gothic nightmare of a ship! Such a unique design. The other ships in the franchise are all very nicely done as well.The Sulaco must have inspired countless other designs, and regardless what you think of the films, the Prometheus and Covenant are two absolute beauties.
I've actually thought about doing videos about that universe. I feel like there's so much untapped potential there. Not sure what kind of videos I would do though.
Serenity would probably be my number one, because of all the ships mentioned, that would probably be the one I would own if I had the choice :) Small, private, fast, cargospace, open and hidden... two shuttles... just perfect :)
The White Star from Babylon 5 would be pretty high on my list. It's equal parts powerful and beautiful. And after initially being a one of a kind trump card that could still only barely hold its own against the Shadows, the eventual reveal of an entire fleet of White Stars finally ready to get the Shadow War started with a fighting chance is such a glorious moment.
It's probably in large part because of nostalgia for me but my favorite is the Enterprise-D. When I think of what the future should look like, I think of that ship more than anything else.

Seeing it in all its majestic, glorious beauty as it comes to life and roars out of the hanger bay with the angelic mass effect theme playing in the background. A beautiful introduction and by favorite scene in the entire series

I'd need more room to also put: Gunstar One-"The Last Starfighter" The ship that inspired the Star Furies in Babylon 5, it's last resort weapon, Death Blossom is awesome. Space Battleship Yamato(Argo in the American Dub)"Uchu Senkan Yamato/Star Blazers." The refitted and upgraded WW-II Japanese Battleship Yamato with a Wave Motion engine, Shock Cannons, Warp ability, Black Tigers squadron and the Wave Motion Gun is humanity's last hope to survive and defeat the Gamillas out to wipe out Earth with radioactive planet bombs. MOYA-"Farscape" The living leviathan ex-prison ship that becomes home to several innocent ex-prisoners and lost American Astronaut, John Crichton. United Earth Cruiser C-41-D-"Forbidden Planet"-the ship that, very likely, inspired the look of the Starship Enterprise is a wonderful flying saucer with just as much economy of space shown by Serenity. The TARDIS. Yeah...it's good you made it an honorable mention, but to me, the TARDIS is the greatest science fiction ship ever made. It can go anywhere, any when, has limitless interior space and an ability to translate anything written or said in any language. That is amazing.
I still love the Omega Class Destroyers from Babylon 5 and Crusade. Interesting, reasonably scientifically accurate design, one mile long, 60 feet of armor, and just a glance at it clearly says, "I am here to kill you." It has one function and one function only, and is just intimidating, and it has a beautiful ugliness, much like the A-10 Warthog fighter from the USAF
The Andromeda Ascendant is a sexy ship no matter the angle. What I liked about that ship is how real they tried to make it in sci-fi, especially with the small details.
My favorite Hero Ship is Voyager. Largely because of nostalgia. I remember watching the latest VOY episode whenever it aired when I was a kid with my Dad. I miss those days
I don't know if you every saw a cartoon series called Invasion America (it's on youtube and I would recommend it, short-lived as it was). They had a ship called Rita's Dream on that that I liked. Not sure if it counts as a hero ship, there were quite a few with it's design, but it was the only one with a name, and it wasn't on screen much; but I liked it because it looked cool but functional. Kinda midway between a troop transport and a fighter. Seriously though track down the show and watch it, it won't take long and it is tragically under discussed.
I think the Solo movie killed my remaining love for the Falcon now that I know it has the brain of an annoying droid. The Defiant aka Sisko's Pimp Hsnd is my pick for best hero ship.
What are you talking about, the falcon has at least three droidbrains always fighting and sabatoging each others systems of ship control... I always pictured three droid heads basically all c3p0 mixed with r2 and the torture droid from jabbas palace just always jabbing each other out of pettyness and arguments unresolved peacefully, its why han always suffers from it breaking down, droid battles break it constantly People love the expanded universe for this reason, its vibrantly fun action packed and hilarious

And if we wander into anime we got The Bebop from Cowboy Bebop, Sword Breaker from Lost universe and The Outlaw Star from Outlaw Star, and Amaterasu from Starship Operators.
How about "Darkstar", "Scorpio" B7, "the Discovery" (2001), "Nistromo", and last "The Heart of Gold", or even "the Bistromath" the fastest ship in the universe, 10 to the power of 17,000 R on the open stretches.
In all honesty, this is a list that I like. It doesn't include any dumb ships, and you do a good job describing why each one earned it's spot (especially with Galactica). I'm happy you didn't include the TARDIS because I ain't a big fan of it. Good list 👌
I'll chime in and add in the White Star from B5 (since it did become the Hero Ship for the series after season 2, especially as a reproducible type), the Yamato since the thing never dies, has an amazing aesthetic and a kickass cannon, the SDF-1 Megafortress/Macross that battled against the best the Zentraedi could throw at it across the Solar System, the X-Wing as it's the fighter that people associate most with the Star Wars, the Defiant from DS9 which was blown up and then replaced with another of the same class, showing it can never be defeated, and last but not least, the original series Battlestar Galactica, special kids and all.
I agree with the Defiant but the Omega class isn't a protagonist vessel, even the Agamennon with her history with Sheridan isn't featured heavily. Now if you were to play with it earlier before Sheridan gets B5 and she's permanently stationed there. Okay, but as the series played out... no.
Definitely should expand to top 10 or top 15 to include Moya, The Bebop, The Planet Express, The Raza, The Defiant, Voyager, Millennium Falcon, The Icarus II, The Nebuchadnezzar, et al. But mostly Moya needs to be in there. She was a character unto her self. But overall, great list! Love your work, sir!
I'd argue that the Kelvin timeline _Enterprise_ has a few unsightly angles. Top down is especially problematic for me as it accentuates the nacelles that are too close together imo
Luke Skywalker's swing has a higher kill count per ship tonnage vs ship tonnage destroyed I assume... My favourite is Captain Harlock's Alcadia, although I admit it is pretty ill-defined (there are a number of versions of it, one for each "incarnation" of Harlock, and the interior always seemed "vague" and off-model to me).
The TOS always looks great at any angle... But its not a good or very realistic design. The neck is about 12 ft wide.... Barely enough room to put a turbo lift in. But it's still one of my favorite ships especially the refit.
It's funny you say there's no angle the Enterprise looks bad from. When they were making Star Trek 2, the FX and model teams said they just hated the thing. It only looked good from a few angles, it was difficult to keep it all in focus at one time, and was just a hassle to work with. They were under the impression they were building the Reliant as "the New Enterprise," which was intended to circumvent all those shortcomings. I don't agree with their assessment, I just thought it was funny is all.
I was *very* glad to see the Normandy 2 on this list. However I am sorry that neither Dauntless made the top five--neither Grey Lensman Kinnison's personal Super Dreadnought nor Black Jack Geary's somewhat less formidable but still very effective flagship. Maybe you should do a separate list of written- SF ships? Although then you might need to do more than five!
Hmm... I think I like the interior of the SR2 more, but the outside of the SR1 is more visually pleasing to me. The yellow in the colour-scheme and the engines only sliding sideways instead of vectoring the front and back of the narcelles are just not resonating with me as much as the SR1 did.
You probably didn't want two ships from the same franchise, but I feel like the Defiant should have been included somehow. Maybe for a top 5 badass ships list.

The Rocinante is definitely tardis-like bigger on the inside, especially the scenes where you see people walking on the exterior.
The ship Arthur from Starchaser The Legend of Orin was one of my favorites.
Rocinante is like an anti-serenity. Armed to the teeth gunship that can take on big ships and highly functionally designed.

I'd argue that the Kelvin timeline _Enterprise_ has a few unsightly angles. Top down is especially problematic for me as it accentuates the nacelles that are too close together imo
You forgot the Yamato (Argo in the dub). It was the ultimate hero ship with the wave motion gun.

Luke Skywalker's swing has a higher kill count per ship tonnage vs ship tonnage destroyed I assume... Saved a moon, avenged a planet, was the stepping stone to rebuild a galactic space farring republic of peace and trading

I love the White Star and Defiant, but those ships are almost an extension of the B5 or Deep Space 9. not the center of each show.

My favourite is Captain Harlock's Alcadia, although I admit it is pretty ill-defined (there are a number of versions of it, one for each "incarnation" of Harlock, and the interior always seemed "vague" and off-model to me).
The Defiant would have been a good contender for number two, with the Normandy SR2 being number one.

I suppose the show is still a bit young, but I am confident that the Orville should have a place on such a list.
The TOS always looks great at any angle... But its not a good or very realistic design. The neck is about 12 ft wide.... Barely enough room to put a turbo lift in.
But it's still one of my favorite ships especially the refit.
It's funny you say there's no angle the Enterprise looks bad from. When they were making Star Trek 2, the FX and model teams said they just hated the thing. It only looked good from a few angles, it was difficult to keep it all in focus at one time, and was just a hassle to work with. They were under the impression they were building the Reliant as "the New Enterprise," which was intended to circumvent all those shortcomings. I don't agree with their assessment, I just thought it was funny is all.

I was *very* glad to see the Normandy 2 on this list. However I am sorry that neither Dauntless made the top five--neither Grey Lensman Kinnison's personal Super Dreadnought nor Black Jack Geary's somewhat less formidable but still very effective flagship.
Maybe you should do a separate list of written- SF ships? Although then you might need to do more than five!

Hmm... I think I like the interior of the SR2 more, but the outside of the SR1 is more visually pleasing to me. The yellow in the colour-scheme and the engines only sliding sideways instead of vectoring the front and back of the narcelles are just not resonating with me as much as the SR1 did.
You probably didn't want two ships from the same franchise, but I feel like the Defiant should have been included somehow. Maybe for a top 5 badass ships list.

1. "Serenity" from "Firelfy". The Alliance could have tracked this ship by following the trail of parts that fell off it!
2. "Battlestar Galactica": Personally, I'd prefer the "TCS Tiger's Claw" from the "Wing Commander" PC game.
3. The "Rocinante": Nothing like turning an MCRN "lifeboat/gunship" into a Pirate ship.;)
4. "Normandy SR2":: Haven't a clue about this ship/game/universe.
5. "U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701): Mr. Scott said it best: "NCC 1701, no bloody A, B, C or D."

How can you take this list seriously without the millenium falcon? Im not a big fan of Star Wars no more, after the last terrible disney productions, but it has credited itself enough to be on this list. I really love the Expanse by the way, but its a very junior kid in the SF house.
