Sim racers need this sound! This is a masterclass on doing the basics right. Exposure, composition, light, sound & all in one take. The big budget car shows could do this when they get their hands on a rare machine but they butcher it with manic edits, music and extraneous BS. We don't need to be manipulated into finding the car exciting, just get out of the way!

That driver miss-gears into 5th instead of 3rd at the start of that second long straight, and still had the minerals to catch up to, and then overtake those two supercars before the next braking section... now that's one exceptionally bad-ass Porsche. The best example of a Porsche on nose-beers that I've ever seen, by a country mile.
As someone who has never raced anything more expensive than around 30k, I was so tense even watching this. Even though he is obviously careful and skilled, my nerves are not built for an incredibly rare and expensive tubo-car on a rainy day.
Back in the 90s racing in those cars must have been such a joy.
Fascinating to see what was a top-level GT1 race car back in the 90s with a manual transmission! Then at the 4:35 min. mark you see why it all changed. Still prefer the manuals 🙂

Sequential boxes had been out for a few years by the time this was developed but this original GT1 was, to be frank, a bit of a cludge job. It was not a purpose built from scratch car like the 1998 one, but one that was mangled together from a road going 993 and the old Group C 962. I suspect Porsche just trusted their manual gearbox for a 24H race more at that time.
They actually introduced their own sequential for the GT1 in 1997 and it proved to be quite reliable. You're right though, the car was a bit of a frankenstein and was largely outpaced by the CLK-GTR as they struggled to catch-up to rule changes. Still awesome to watch it in action though!
