Thank you for coming again everyone! There was such a HUGE response to the last video that I had to listen to more songs for the first time! 💙 if you’d like to follow me on Patreon, I’m at patreon.com/mathewmckenna Always love to hear your thoughts 🥰
A lone song that I recommend you listening to if you do a random collection is Nightmares by Static-P ft. LilyPichu th-cam.com/video/DnGhWMKAur0/w-d-xo.html It tells a short story, but what I love most about the song is the instrumentals.
Yes, all the songs do such a good job at actually pushing the story forward, and that's because Lin-Manuel Miranda is a Broadway songwriter! Songs that tell story is what Broadway songs have to do, so it's really his specialty, and he did so well with the songs in this movie!
@@Neon-Starr why do you feel the need to birng him down though? he inserts himself into his work because it's his? and his musicals were written for his specific voice, as well as a few others, just see how many reoccuring people there are
@@Neon-Starr he's done it twice. In the heights because he wanted to write something for himself. Hamimton ...uhhhh. and in In The Heights, he didn't even want ro be in the movie, Jon chu begged him to be in it.
As a Colombian, when I listen to the 'dos oruguitas' song I just BURST on tears when I see the movie for the first time, It just hits different when you know the context 😭😭 ty for the reaction!
It nearly got me man, it nearly did. But because I’m not that knowledgeable on what that truly is, I didn’t burst out in tears. It was still very fucking sad.
Honestly, that makes sense. I didnt think about it but the lyrics are very valid contributions to the storyline/plot writing. Im glad they gave him those credits. It was beautiful writing.
I wonder how much he got to work with. Like, making a song like "Surface Pressure" was he just given a general "Luisa is strong and very anxious about letting people down" or did he get a detailed description of the insecurities they planned for her? Or would more details just drag him down in freely expressing the lyrics?
I fully agree with the songs having a point. Encanto did an amazing job with using their songs in the place of conversations that characters were having. They weren't time fillers but devices to move the plot along.
Yeah the whole movie feels like it was made for a stage production musical, which I think (and hope) we'll get. The performances themselves all feel very real and doable on stage. Especially We Don't Talk About Bruno looks like it was straight up ripped from a stage in choreography and set design (which is funny if you look at the choreography video they used as a reference).
The yellow butterfly is also a reference to Gabriel Garcia Marquez and his book Cien años de soledad, 100 years of loneliness (?), he was a Colombian author known for his magic realism (?) and won a literature novel prize with the book I just named
yesss he was one of the people who really started the magical realism genre, I learned about him in a short story writing class :D we read "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" which is also in the genre
Mathew: oh this song is so cute! Mathew, 2 seconds later: this is a heavy song! Like, so heavy! Yeah, we know, we all sobbed our eyes out at this song 😭😅
There's nothing that gets me crying like the pure expression of pain on abuelas face as she just lost the love of her life and father to her children, watching as he is killed(you can see mirabel look towards where he was standing but disney isn't gonna show the violence for obvious reasons).
In a way, Mirabel does get a gift. More specifically she didn't get one in the same way as the others, because she already sort of has one. Mirabel takes after her Abuela, she has the innate ability to hold her family together or break them apart and control over Casita (when she is focused) She already has the magic (like her Abuela), she doesn't need a gift for the same reason Abuela didn't get one. Since this is the first time an encanto has happened to their family (that we and the characters know of) Abuela didn't understand why Mirabel didn't get a gift the way the others did.
Did you notice that both in 'we don't talk about bruno" and the start of "what else can i do" isabella's voice is more "Disney princess-y" but as this song continues it evolves to a more natural and robust type of singing?
Dos Oruguitas has made me cry without fail, and this is another instance where I cried. I don't know Spanish fluently, but knew enough that when I heard "mariposas" in the lyrics, I knew it was referencing butterflies. When you said "dos oruguitas" means "two caterpillars", I got chills, and then hearing the parts of the song that were in this video and seeing the visuals to go with it made me cry again. 🥺🧡😭 It's too powerful! This movie and it's music has become one of my all-time favorite movies and movie soundtracks in such a short time.
Colombia, Mi Encanto, is by Carlos Vives, a big Colombian singer, and the genre of the song and type more music Carlos does is called Vallenato tho he also does some Cumbia, always with a mix of pop/rock
true. good thing I don't know Spanish. otherwise I would remember the names of those 2 songs and can't keep it out of my head. (good thing the others are easier to know and find)
goodness i remember crying in the theater during “dos oruguitas” 😭 this is a little bit of a strange request, but it would be so cool to see your reaction to death note the musical! the songs are absolutely amazing, some personal favorites being “where is the justice”, “stalemate”, and “playing his game”. the entire english demo is on yt, along with videos of the korean and japanese productions :) awesome video as always
OMG I felt like I was the only person who adores that musical! It's so damn underrated, and it's a shame it never got an fully produced english stage adaptation, cause it definitely deserves it.
when's the full movie coming kinggg i wanna watch you watch it so badd. anyway let's go the music is amazing even out of context and im actually glad you're not seeing everything with the visuals bc i wany u to see it first time in the full movie reaction
dude the message at the end of What Else Can I Do literally brought me to tears, I've been trying to reach my highest potential because i'm the only girl in my family, and my mom places a lot of expectations on me. Hearing the song and what you said about me helped me realize that I don't have to meet her expectations, I just have to do the best that I can do, which will be enough. Thank you so much and keep making amazing content
"Colombia, mi encanto" is in the style of carlos vives music, wich is the singer. If you liked it, you might like his music idk it's pretty similar and lovely too
Lyrics that do heavy lifting fleshing out characters and moving plot forward are exactly what you hire Lin Manuel Miranda for. Not just a master musical composer, but one who made a smash musical with less than 2 minutes of spoken dialog.
It just took me this long to realize the grandmother at the start was saying "abre los ojos" (I thought she was saying "Abuela says" 😅), which she does translate to "open your eyes". "Open your eyes" is repeated by Mirabel in "Waiting on a Miracle" and by Abuela in "All of You". But the phrase takes on a different meaning each time. So many connecting threads and symbols in this movie.
You should play that Carlos Vive song (The I Love Columbia song) to your girlfriend. She'll recognize the singer right away (she may not remember his name, but she'll recognize his music style). As a Hispanic growing up, you'd hear his music EVERYWHERE at every fiesta. I was so hyped when I heard his music in Encanto.
Even though you've basically had the plot spoiled, I'd love to see your reaction to the full movie! I also just realized you've only seen/heard Bruno, himself, only like once, despite hearing all the songs haha.
I definitely agree that a lot of musicals , especially Disney, can have songs that are more for storytelling. Giving quick and easy context or speeding up a scene. But in Encanto the songs are all character driven- really helping emphasize what is going on in the characters minds so we don’t get any weird narration stuff that some media does where they’re like “I’m feeling sad because __” and instead they use the music and lyrics to do that smoothly and really emphasize the emotions they are feeling
Also, the difference between Encanto and Moana is that with Encanto, Lin Manuel Miranda was involved from the first moment. It's why, though the Moana music is still very good, this is so much better.
Dos orugitas also just makes me break down in tears because of how much I see abuela is the movie as my mama and it hurts so much knowing how much pain she went through growing up
Your right about the songs bring there for a reason because here they are (in many sibling perspective) note!! These two are the songs that gave the most related songs to people: Surface pressure: the pressure put on you by the family because you're the oldest What else can I do: In here Isabella just found out that she could also do more FUN things with her gift than being perfect and beautiful about it, which was said to be required because of the pressure put on her by her grandmother.
Dos oruguitas will always be my favourite song from this movie it’s so beautiful even though I don’t speak Spanish it still makes Me so emotional and that’s the magic of music it makes people feel things even when you don’t understand the lyrics , though I am trying to learn Spanish atm and this song is one of the reasons , it sounds like a beautiful language and the second favourite from this movie being Columbia mi encanto , even though I’m Irish not Columbian
The reason there are only two songs sung entirely in Spanish in this movie is because of the meanings behind most of the songs and the fact that they are used in the storytelling. The two songs that aren't are the credits song, Columbia Mi Encanto, since its after the story is over, and Dos Orugitas, which is a folk song I believe, and all of the storytelling is done through visuals. Which would be a lot harder to do for the other songs because they're all basically just exposition. Family Madrigal is introducing the family. Surface Pressure and Waiting On A Miraclr are character conflicts, What Else Can I Do is character development, We Don't Talk About Bruno is showing the reasons everyone believes Bruno is a menace, etc.
It would be so cool if you could react to Kikuo. He’s a Vocaloid artist that usually uses Miku, but his style of music is really interesting to me and I thought it would be cool to hear your take on it! ^^ Some of my personal favorites that I’d recommend are Hole Dwelling, La La La Rasen No Naka, And Then You Became The Moon, and The Cats Dining Table
Oh, you're still going to cry. When you hit that scene in Dos Origuitas after the whole movie? Yup. Waterfalls of tears. Or, hey, maybe that was just me.
Dam, I wasn't expecting to get so emotional watching your reaction to these songs. I appreciate you for letting us know that sometimes we are good enough & that we don't have to necessarily subscribe to what others ideas of perfection are. That hit it the feels
After you said "man I wish you could see yourself the way I see you" I started crying. I was eating and watching this then after you said that, I was balling my eyes out. Thank you for that reminder 😭😭
It’s funny that your last 2 songs “all of you” and “dos oruguitas” are flipped in order from the movie. You’d get the sad dos oruguitas with images showing how Abuelo died to save Abuela the triplets and the town. The get All of You which is kinda like the town returning the favor and lifting the family up along withe the reunion of Bruno and the family.
Okay, we all know the music is fantastic. What *_I_* want to comment about is how much I loved your commentary at the END of "What Else Can I Do"! What you said about taking REAL PRIDE in the best version of yourself *_right now_* really struck home for me.

Me and my friends have this thing where if one of us says something bad about ourselves the others force them to say three nice things about themselves
Funny thing is: People have theorized that Mirabel not getting a gift is the Casita making her the next head of the family and holder of the candle after Abuela Alma passes on.
"Starting to sound like a motivational speaker, sorry" Don't say sorry, it's awesome to listen to what you have to say, for some reason I've not thought about it before or heard something similar from all of your reflections of the songs. I will definitely keep these in my thoughts for the future, which might be very useful. Also, love your videos. 😅
Technically she gets a gift but she's just the next monarch l, just a fan theory currently but some teasers for the next movie hint at it. She is good at seeing the kids for who they are not just the magic they get.
No I get what u mean... Because it's like a musical were a musical has a story with music and the person who wrote... My favorite guy alone with Ben... He's amazing with lyrics and he's Broadway. And I can tell the difference of a song and musical... It just hits different I don't know how.
Here are two other movie soundtracks I want you to react to. Well, someone already suggested Vivo, but also Arlo the Alligator Boy. Both soundtracks are really catchy. Though I could have sworn you reacted to 'What Else Can I Do?' in the first one. Huh.
I know you said the plot of it got spoiled but I personally would still love your reaction of the movie 😅 Edit: I probably should've mentioned I watched for first reaction of the Encanto songs after this lol
Dos Origuitas makes me tear up every time. Also, idk why, but you actually SEE the machete swing!!! Why did Disney DO that?! We already KNOW, we didn't need to SEE
you should definitely listen to the songs from Moana next! also written by LMM :) Christopher Jackson (Washington from Hamilton) played as the father of Moana. he only had one song but he's soooooo good
I watched the other video too and I wanted to say, she doesn't get a gift! but I refrained myself cuz I didn't want to spoil it for you. sad to see some people did spoil it.

Funny thing is: People have theorized that Mirabel not getting a gift is the Casita making her the next head of the family and holder of the candle after Abuela Alma passes on.
"Starting to sound like a motivational speaker, sorry"
Don't say sorry, it's awesome to listen to what you have to say, for some reason I've not thought about it before or heard something similar from all of your reflections of the songs.
Dos oruguitas makes me cry every time but I love the song so much
11:05 someone PLEASE make that into a gif 🤣
No I get what u mean... Because it's like a musical were a musical has a story with music and the person who wrote... My favorite guy alone with Ben... He's amazing with lyrics and he's Broadway. And I can tell the difference of a song and musical... It just hits different I don't know how.
You made me cry again the last song 😭😭😭😭😭
Here are two other movie soundtracks I want you to react to. Well, someone already suggested Vivo, but also Arlo the Alligator Boy. Both soundtracks are really catchy. Though I could have sworn you reacted to 'What Else Can I Do?' in the first one. Huh.
I know you said the plot of it got spoiled but I personally would still love your reaction of the movie 😅
Edit: I probably should've mentioned I watched for first reaction of the Encanto songs after this lol
Dos Origuitas makes me tear up every time. Also, idk why, but you actually SEE the machete swing!!! Why did Disney DO that?! We already KNOW, we didn't need to SEE
I never thought i'd tear up to a reaction video like this but here we are
I love your reactions to the songs, i just wish you used clips from the movie cause the visuals just add SO MUCH to each of the songs.
Dos oruguitas is one of the only songs that have made me cry
Dos Oruguitas is my favourite song from this movie!!!
Really nice reaction! The songs in encanto has some meaning too, which is really nice...
If you listen carefully when Bruno says Let It Go you can actually hear the opening notes from Let It Go from Frozen.
you should definitely listen to the songs from Moana next! also written by LMM :) Christopher Jackson (Washington from Hamilton) played as the father of Moana. he only had one song but he's soooooo good
YOU NEED TO WATCH THE MOVIE!!!
Theres an English version of Dos Oruguitas and I can’t put it on while I’m driving or else I’ll start tearing up and won’t be able to see.
I watched the other video too and I wanted to say, she doesn't get a gift! but I refrained myself cuz I didn't want to spoil it for you. sad to see some people did spoil it.
I can’t lie I almost started tearing up hearing and seeing dos orugitas again
Great vid! Dos oruguitas is my fav. You should listen to the songs in tick tick, BOOM! Those songs are amazing!
You should watch all the song's scenes too. Because you can notice many things and feelings not just lyrics.
ahh ive never been so excited to watch a video!! ty for your reaction
Have you watched encanto yet?
Well apparently that song/scene still makes me cry
4:58 lin Manuel Miranda wrote the music for the film
mirabel is most likely going to do what abuela does. mirabel is gifted the power of the madrigal's magic in general.
hey, you should react to some of the songs from tick, tick… boom! they’re all really good, and Lin made his debut as a director on this movie!
I'm sure you know by now, as it was kinda heavily implied by the clip, but the granpa was murdered when they were fleeing their town.
