The part where she sings, "show this family SOMETHING NEW," she looks at Isabella. In Isabella's song she sings, "I just made something unexpected, something sharp, SOMETHING NEW." I love how everything is connected.
And even before that, she sings "I would heal what's broken" as she gestures to the whole family because she eventually brings the family together after they all admit the issues they have. Amazing writing and execution by the team :)
@@lilkumori9811 Also "I would move the mountains" and "make new trees and flowers grow". She's the one who allows for the mountain of burden and pressure to be moved off Luisa's shoulders and she's the one who catalyzes Isabella growing new flowers and trees. She does literally everything she said she would in the song, just not in the way she expected.
@@Wolikethat also the crack in Casita emanates all the way to the same mountain that blocked off the river where Abuela's family crossed, and where the Encanto took form. 🙀
"Can't keep down the unspoken invisible pain." She helped Luisa, Bruno, Isabela, Dolores, Abuela Alma and herself bring up and heal the pain they were all suppressing.
Everything she says she would do, she ends up doing. She helps Isabella grow something new, she moves the mountains when they split, she heals the damaged family members, and she shows them how to live without their gifts
It's also worth noting that she always had the ability to do those things. Not as blatantly and obviously as the other family members, of course, but her hidden gift has always been there. She's the next matriarch of the Madrigal family. The new casa? Yeah, that front door is Mirabel's door. She has the gift of familial love. The Madrigal family is *her* family, and she is the new keystone to hold them together. When Abuela Alma passes on, Mirabel will be there to keep the family strong.
Especially since Mirabel sings she would make new trees and flowers grow... a tree grows tall and strong while a flower... well you can relate this directly to Luisa and Isabella and then to the following Madrigal generations. Indeed she already did with Antonio before this AND she already anticipated his gift with presenting him the plushy; something Alma never could.
That's even true for the part, "I can't take another night in my room waiting on a miracle." The next night in her room, she's no longer waiting for a miracle but intent on saving one.
He says he used that 1-2-3 waltz beat to show how Mirabel is out of step with the rest of the family. SO much detail behind every note. LOVE your breakdowns. Thank you!
It’s even better than that. The production and the beat of this song is in 3/4, yes, but her actual vocal melody, “I can’t move the mountains, I can’t make the flowers bloom” is a polyrhythm. She’s singing two in the time of three. You could almost say She’s trying to force the 3/4 into a 4/4
Just realized that in this so she mentions that she can’t move mountains. At the end of the movie her fight with abuela literally causes the mountains to move and open up the path.
This movie moves Colombians, because one of the most emotional scenes in the film reminds us of the displacement and violence that many of us experience as a result of the wars between guerrillas, paramilitaries, drug traffickers and the government. It reminds us of how many of our families lost one of their pillars (Dad) and how Mom had to rebuild her family from the ashes after losing everything. Our grandmothers and mothers are heroines for Colombians, they gave everything to rebuild their families, and our country. That is why the role of the grandmother in this film is important because thanks to all her sacrifices to her great strength, our house is being rebuilt, our beautiful home Colombia.
"Waiting for a miracle" is the entire plot of the movie. And as awesome as that is, I just wanted to say that her dress is the most impressive thing in the movie.
another element that informs the background of this song, the final take of this song was done 2 days before Stephanie Beatriz gave birth, so some of the feeling she emotes here is her waiting for her own miracle to arrive.
One of the scenes where she sings "make new trees and flowers grow" it's the same dance Isabela does in the Family Madrigal where Mirabel sings "grows a flower the town goes wild" And when she sings "I am ready, come one I'm ready" a green firework explodes behind her implying Bruno
A stunning and heart-wrenching song. Personally, I feel like this song ties into the same self-transformation theme as Dos Oruguitas--Mirabel has been stuck at that door for so long, stuck in her chrysalis, waiting and waiting to change and grow. This song is telling the story of how she is finally ready to burst out of that stifling chrysalis, to spread her wings and show this family who she is and what she can do; it is especially a struggle for her as a part of the family Madrigal, since the magic powers her family members got made it seem like it was a cinch for them all to find who they are and know their purpose in life. It made it seem like they didn't have to struggle to come out of their chrysalises, fully realized beings. Of course, she's wrong about this; as she learns through the movie, the powers of her family members don't define who they are under the surface, and Mirabel ultimately doesn't actually need magic to find herself. The miracle she's pleading for isn't magic, in the end; it's that she grow into her whole and unabashed self. This sentiment is reiterated in the song All Of You--"the miracle is not, any magic that you've got, the miracle is you." To grow and transform into your true self, that's the real miracle.
My stupid Encanto theory. I think her gift was withheld until this moment because no five year old could handle it. Notice how immediately after she starts to see the cracks in her family and getting them to open up and heal. She was super empathetic, but she wasn't doing that before right at this moment. I think the cracks disappeared so quickly because at that time they were symbolic, not yet actual.
I love that when she’s begging her abuela to see her, she’s not talking directly to her, even in her thoughts/the song’s imagery. She circles around talking to and about the rest of her family right there in the moment, but for what she wants to say to Abuela, it’s only to her door. To the image of her that’s on the door, even if it does come to life. It shows how repressive the love and respect for her has become…
In the end, she does move the mountains... opening the Encanto's valley to the outside world again. She gets NEW trees and flowers to grow by opening Isabella up to all of the wild possibilities at her fingertips. She does heal what's broken _by_ showing her family something new. All of these "I would" statements... she does them.
that line about the unspoken invisible pain waiting on a miracle makes it sound like she's describing herself: a madrigal that no one sees, no one hears, no one knows but is still there like a pain, a burden
This song is also forward looking, when Mirabel says, "I would heal what's broken, show this family something new"...she actually goes on to do just that!!
wow have seen this movie around 5 times already but i just now noticed, thanks to knox pointing out its frozen in time because of that photo, that the light effects in this song are a photography technique where you have incredibly slow shutterspeed to catch the moving light. ingenious.
When she says that she can't stand another night up in her room, you can notice that she is in the shadows of her family. Meaning she isn't seen by the village as her family is. Try to think of them as trees. The sunlight is the attention and praise you receive, the family is the ones getting that attention, but she isn't noticed for how she grows under her family's shadow. So deep.
Your breakdowns of these songs are so fuckin good, I keep coming back to hear your perspective and how it musically flows, and lyrically, what you decipher the meaning to be.
Your breakdowns are the absolute best. The way you know about where the music and the structure comes from is impressive and insightful. I've watched other producer/songwriter/etc. breakdowns and they all give such vague takes like "oh this is pop" "oh this sounds like country" and such but you are so knowledgeable, and I think it makes all the difference for a coherent and informative video. Keep up the good work man 👍
I'm 58yo & absolutely love this movie. Not just the music...but the message. Maribel has a power...she has a very special connection to the house they live in.
This movie is very different because normally it’s the people with magic that are the main character but in this one it’s the only person with no magic in the family that is the main character
6:00- Little note on this, Columbia has historically been very Catholic. And there is a very unspoken but present religious influence in the film (which makes sense since this is in the mid 1950s). And as the song goes on, she uses the pronoun ‘you’ and even says, ‘bless me now as you’ve blessed us all those years ago’, suggesting that she is begging God for a chance to be useful to her family. I think that this makes it even sadder as a song as she is basically begging God to make her worthy of her family’s love and acceptance.
You pointing out the first firework hitting with that crescendo in the music had me pay closer attention. I noticed there were similar but smaller firework/percussion hits on the words "patient," "steadfast," and "steady," with a last one on "bless." I keep seeing new things every time, but had totally missed the fireworks timing until you said it.
I can totally relate to mirabelle some times I question my self what is my purpose in life? what can I do? and some times I wonder how can I fit in with my family
If I had to compare it to another Disney movie, I would compare this to "Into the unknown" as far as visuals are concerned with the sparkles everywhere.
I love how you break it all down. I don’t have anyone to geek out about lyricism with so I’m so glad I found you! Looking forward to see you react to the filmed Hamilton show on Disney +
Side fact, Stephanie Beatrix was literally IN LABOR while recording the vocals for this song, that's where you get a lot of the emotional desperation you're hearing.
I saw my daughter watching this movie and thought the songs were written beautifully. I don’t mind hearing the movie over and over again lol. I thought the same about Moana.
During the part where Mirabel sings to Abuela to open her eyes, I feel like Mirabel is telling/asking Abuela to open her eyes and see Mirabel as Abuela sees her sisters and the rest of the family. This song really made me emotional because a part of me understands how Mirabel feels.
This song makes me cry every time. I relate soooo much to Mirabel as I myself am the youngest in my family and have always been searching for something that fits me that would let me be recognized as much as my siblings are. I live it so much-it’s my favorite song in the entire movie!
My favorite thing about this song is everything she said she would do she does by the end of the movie. She moves the mountains by breaking the mountains that surround their village. She grows new flowers and trees by helping Isabella open up to her powers. And she heals what's broken by healing the family
For some reason I remembered Charlotte Lucas from Pride and Prejudice. Then it hit me that this song is very relatable to those facing the cultural stigma of not being able to find a spouse and/or having children the way society pushes them to do. It hit me hard because of growing up in a family with that type of mentality.
I love how when she sings I would heal what's broken she minds points to the family, as at this point they didn't know it but the family was kinda broken they where not on the same page working together but at the end when Mirabel fixes the Miricle she does this by bringing the family together

I found out the other day that stephanie beatriz the actress who voiced mirabel recorded this song when she was having contractions, she went into labour I think it was a few hours later and none of the people working with her knew until she gave birth (not sure if I got any if this wrong, was only able to skim the article)
I got to admit I'm not as big a fan of this song as others in this movie or other people in this fandom are of the song but I absolutely love how she ends it off asking am I too late for a miracle because Mirabel is three times older then her cousin Antonio who had just received his Tarzan like powers and unlike the rest of her family save for her dad and uncle whom both married in she is the only one who seems to understand that the magic is about the family not the other way around and doesn't have a power of her own
Something I noticed is when Mirabel sings in the beginning, her voice is more nasally, like she's holding her voice back cause she's unsure of herself or of such. In this song she kinda let's it out in some parts but its mostly nasally throughout the song like the first song. In the last song her voice is more in her chest, I think. Like she's let go, she's accepted herself and she's happy
Talking about visual representation when she says that she would make flowers grow the flowers are around her dress like they are around Isabella in The Family Madrigal
The TH-camr Howard ho actually has a great Video about the fact that Waiting on a Miracle is the only song in a 3 tempo instead of 4 and how this connects it to Dos Orugitas later, I highly reccomend you check it out!
I really love how you explain everything!!! I love Lin Manuel, I think he is a genius, and listen to you I find he is still more genius hahaha... Like other people comment, he writen the songs for Moana too... and there's another animated movied, in where he sings, the movie is "Vivo" , if you want to react too :)
I feel like this song is an anthem for all of us who have a weird version of imposter syndrome. Yeah, I’m not *special* but I’m freaking competent! Recognize that!
Dude this kind of is what Vanya from Umbrella Academy might feel about her family in the first season and that's why she made that book Extraordinary:my life as number seven.
Fun fact that I don’t think anyone else has posted yet; Stephanie Beatriz was 9 months pregnant when she recorded this song, her daughter was born just days after she finished recording!
I loved watching you appreciate this song while breaking it down and give it the credit it deserves! Amongst the other songs this one is kinda swept under the rug and even said to be dissappointing compared to other I-Want-Songs from Disney. Totally agree that it's nice to have one that is more subdued which also fits her character nicely. Thank you!
You should react to the music from in the heights another musical by lin manuel miranda theres a movie adaptation but i think that would be asking for too much if you could react to a couple of the songs from the musical it would be awesome
I know this reaction was done months ago, but I wanted to point out that in the opening song about the family, do you notice the family never looks at her or acknowledges her as they walk by?
Omgoodness you put out so much content and I'm a bit new here. . . Any chance you'll playlist your Hamilton and Encanto content so i can proper binge them? I want to binge Eminem content too. . . But there's so much I wouldn't expect a playlist there. Your Hamilton breakdowns were the best of any creator I've heard. So glad I stumbled upon them.
With you now hitting Disney I found a group on TH-cam that does amazing songs based of Disney from all kinds of perspectives from the princesses at a school to a villians lair to once upon a time and other avenues. They are Pattycake Productions
@@parkerbrown-nesbit1747 I mean a few members of Voiceplay helped make Pattycake Productions but its a channel all on its own that does musical stories
I better see my homegirl Stephanie get some credit: she was literally pregnant when she recorded this song and she could hardly take a deep breath. 48 hours later, she gave birth to her own miracle :)
You should react to really anything by AJR. It is pretty cool because some of their songs within the same album will reference other songs in that album. They are also just good and relatable songs. Since you are a dad I have to recommend Dear Winter the most.
God if this song doesn’t hit as someone who doesn’t seem to be the one sibling who has it together. May be the older sibling, but my younger sister has it much more controlled. I’m not jealous of her, but damn if I don’t wish I was like her, seemingly having it together. I’m not fine. I’m not fine, like Mirabel says.

Stephanie Beatriz is in In The Heights, too. As a ditzy hairdresser. She's fabulous.
She's so unhinged in In The Heights. I love it!
Is Columbia, mi encanto the last one left? Can’t wait!! Love Carlos Vives!!
I found out the other day that stephanie beatriz the actress who voiced mirabel recorded this song when she was having contractions, she went into labour I think it was a few hours later and none of the people working with her knew until she gave birth (not sure if I got any if this wrong, was only able to skim the article)
Excellent reaction. Colombia loves you!
Encanto is such a good movie-
I got to admit I'm not as big a fan of this song as others in this movie or other people in this fandom are of the song but I absolutely love how she ends it off asking am I too late for a miracle because Mirabel is three times older then her cousin Antonio who had just received his Tarzan like powers and unlike the rest of her family save for her dad and uncle whom both married in she is the only one who seems to understand that the magic is about the family not the other way around and doesn't have a power of her own
Also the fact that the first firework that lights up behind her is green, as if to foreshadow Bruno
I swear. Lin-Manuel can't fail. This is so amazing, along with everything else he ships out. Holy smokes, batman.
6:39 and 7:50 totally give me Michael Jackson’s “earth song” (the early part of earth song) vibes
Thank youuuu Knox 💜💜
Fun fact that I don’t think anyone else has posted yet; Stephanie Beatriz was 9 months pregnant when she recorded this song, her daughter was born just days after she finished recording!
Not only was she 9 months pregnant, she was in the early stages of labor
I loved watching you appreciate this song while breaking it down and give it the credit it deserves! Amongst the other songs this one is kinda swept under the rug and even said to be dissappointing compared to other I-Want-Songs from Disney. Totally agree that it's nice to have one that is more subdued which also fits her character nicely. Thank you!
❤I love your reaccions, they are so deep and with so much detail . You access so many levels of meaning. I really apreaaciated❤
Wow! You are so good at this! Thanks for doing what you do! Well done! 👍🏾
I'm literally obsessed with Stephanie and I don't mind
You should react to the music from in the heights another musical by lin manuel miranda theres a movie adaptation but i think that would be asking for too much if you could react to a couple of the songs from the musical it would be awesome
I know this reaction was done months ago, but I wanted to point out that in the opening song about the family, do you notice the family never looks at her or acknowledges her as they walk by?
Please react to other Lin Manuel Miranda stuff like songs from his musical in the heights. Love you knox
Fun fact, while recording this song, the artist didn't tell anyone she had gone into labor because she didn't want to have to reschedule.
Great break down.. makes me check out the movie
all for you is a masterpeice from encanto you have to check it out man!
Made my day! Thank you for sharing.
You definitely need to react to "Ladies of Anime Cypher" by HalaCG. Another good one is "Outmatched" by Reinaeiry. and "You Will Be Mine" by Chi-Chi
You gotta do some more Disney man, this is awesome!
The group's Voiceplay, and they ARE INCREDIBLE!! They do an incredible version of We Don't Talk About Bruno.
I love your reactions! Please react to In the Heights, I'm sure you're gonna love it as much as Encanto and Hamilton!
You should react to really anything by AJR. It is pretty cool because some of their songs within the same album will reference other songs in that album. They are also just good and relatable songs. Since you are a dad I have to recommend Dear Winter the most.
I love this part 6:39
Love your reaction vids 💝
Hey knox, Harry Mack Omegle Bar 35 is among the ones you skipped, But it is really mind blowing, please react to it.
Can you do tangle? Personally I think it has one of the best soundtracks from all disney movies.
Stephanie Beatriz revealed that she was _in labor_ when singing this song.
Whoa.
(She gave birth the following morning)
I just got back for my holiday will my school now I’m watching your videos hehe bye bye ❤️
Please go react to Allf of you! This was a perfect song to react! 👌👍😊 Still encanto song. Your such a great rapper!
In the heights live stream next?
WHY is no one telling you that Stephanie was in LABOR when recording this song!!!! Thats crazy AF to me
