However, I have been through the Canadian music re-education camp and think the hip would have been very popular here if radio would have played them. The Australian band, Midnight Oil (especially Peter Garret), and the hip worked on several environmental causes in Canada. It is sad that Gord passed so early; he was a great frontman.

Fraternity was the original band for Bon Scott n Barnsey. Bon Scott grew up in Fremantle Western Australia (just down the road from me), which is where he's buried and his statue memorial is. I grew up with these guys in our local pubs (as millions of us Aussies did). I sure do miss those days of our Aussie bands being at the local, where we were up close and personal with them all. Our celebrities live amongst us, and live pretty normal lives, very different to American celebrities living in hiding all the time, and it was awesome ❤ Thanks for the great reaction, loved it 😊
Hi, I worked with Bon Scotts dad in Fremantle 1976. He was fork-lift driver with Mills and Wares biscuit factory. He had a tattoo of Dirty Deeds on his arm. I used to beg him to let me meet Bon. I was 14yrs old lol. He'd tap me on the head and send me to my Mum who also worked there.
I'm fairly sure he never sung initially though, instead, Scott PLAYED DRUMS in the Spektors... because he was a long time drummer, starting as a child in pipe bands. The fact he was in a pipe band as kid, was better known than what he actually played in it, though. Hence the bagpipes in A Long Way To The Top... the elder Young, producing the song, George, Malcom and Angus's brother... felt it needed something.. something more of a kick... and suddenly went with bagpipes. Bon was the only one who did not laugh (according to Mark Evans)... and went out and spent almost 500 bucks, an eff ton in Aus back then, on the best set he could buy, brought them back to the studio. Got them shoved in his arms by George and told to come up with a Bagpipe solo..... who then got very confused when he said he could not play them, declaring 'Weren't you in a pipe band for years?" Bon then told him yeah..... as a DRUMMER... which is how he got his first gig with his first band...drumming. To his credit, he took them away and spent a couple of weeks practicing, came back and laid down the pipes for the song, a song they would then later play only a very small amount of times live... Bon picked up the pipes and played them live, too (but Evans said they never realized how badly incompatible the instrument was, tuning wise, with ones used by a rock band... they always had to down tune.. everything... even Phil his skins.. to play it live, so played it only about a dozen times ever, then shelved it).
I lived next door to the drummer (Steve Prestwich) on two separate occasions in Elizabeth, South Australia. Jim Barnes' family was kind of dysfunctional and my father took Jim under his wing, later on becoming Cold Chisel's promotions manager from the mid 70s through to 1981. I'm 57 now and still good friends with the band members. Harmonica player is Dave Blight. Still plays blues harp around SA and with Mick Kidd in the US blues festivals. Fraternity was Scott's band and was known for Jim Barnes' brother John Swan (Swannee) being their front man.
Jimmy is fantastic at duets. He's done loads of them with a vast variety of other singers throughout his long solo career (singing with Mossy trained him up well). He does definitely alter his voice a lot depending on who he is singing with. Him going toe to toe with Tina Turner in the 1990s is still one of my favs.
Yo! I’ll say it again and again…. Jimmy Barnes is my numero uno singer ever. He was born on 28 July 1956, currently 67 years young (retirement age in Australia) but still performing. So he was around 47 at the time of this performance…. In the last year he has had hip surgery, but is back performing. Such a lovely guy who has helped everyone during the pandemic, with performances on Facebook for us all to enjoy. I know I for one really appreciated what he has done. ❤ Jimmy has written several books on his upbringing which you may find interesting. I do wonder what it would be like to hear Cold Chisel for the first time…. I am glad you’ve got your first reaction under your belt, but please don’t stop….so many gems to discover, and then you have another 40 years or so of solo stuff for Barnsey too. I am excited for you.
I used to see Cold Chisel when they played at pub gigs around Sydney in the late '70s where they developed their craft to an often drunk but critical audience. This meant that they had to develop or be relegated to our distant collective memories when we sobered up. I've been a fan of theirs ever since my mother brought home East (Cold Chisel album) on compact cassette in '80 and I played it to death, thanks mum!
The Aussie Pub Rock genre of the late '70s/early '80s was just that - live music played in the pub. Cold Chisel did it day in and day out, so they're very familiar with how each other plays and sings. That's why they could play the Ringside concert (the stage appears to be a boxing ring or some such) and keep the music tight when they couldn't watch each other for cues like bands usually do.

Mossy is my legend and always will be. First time I saw them Jimmy was drinking straight vodka (I think) right from the bottle on stage. These are the bands that are defined as Aussie Rock pub bands as that’s where they did the hard yards and worked their asses off. I’ve seen them a lot since my late teens and they never disappoint!!
They did try to break into the American scene, but were screwed around by a guy called Marty Schwartz. That's were the song 'you got nothing I want' came from.
I can guarantee u that this song or any Chisel song would be a huge hit in Australia & possibly our siblings across the ditch, New Zealand as well. Chisel doesn't have an era or age limit. I went to this concert in Sydney in my early 20's with a bunch of high school mates, 20 years ago now & we got into Chisel coz of our parents & we've passed Chisel on down each generation. Chisel is Australia's greatest band. Yes ACCA DACCA & INXS were huge & our best exports but Chisel is without a doubt sitting above them on the list.

We had the best music had to offer. The Aussie pub band circuit, beer, music and sheilas. It was a great time to grow up. The last stand 1983 was an epic concert Sydney entertainment centre.
Every aussie knows this song but very few know the place..Bow river is a mostly dry tributary that runs into Lake Argile in western australia when it rains in the desert the place comes alive..there is a camp there..pack the 4x4 and take the trip after the wet season,it will be life changing.
Not dry in the Wet season ! In the wet it is bloody wet and the song mentioned the wet, it was a diamond mine and that is what the song is about getting out the factory job in the city and doing 12 hours a day in the diamond mine
My hubby use to work at Argyle Diamond Mine and another mine nearby called Saly Malay. Think that's how you spell it. He said the gave up replacing the sign for Bow River as it kept getting knicked lol

Hubby was there for about 8 years before it closed. One of his favorite sites he has been on in his 20 plus mining career. I have my own piece of Argyle. 3 pink diamond rings. Very rare. I'm one lucky girl.

I listened to Cold Chisel for thousands of hours in my youth. The harmonies ring like nothing I've heard. I'd try to sing along, at a cost to my vocal chords. I wondered if I had bias as an Aussie, but 30+ years on I've rediscovered their excellence.
They harmonise so well because... Ian is control, smooth, sweet, and Jimmy is raw uncontrolled seething power. And that's the whole point of the song. It's a cry to escape civilisation and return to the wild.
Generally siblings harmonize best together because their voices are so similar…..I should’ve pointed out in video but Barnes sings different when he’s harmonizing vs singing lead….it’s subtle but definitely there I hadn’t picked up on the message….I was stuck on the vibe. 🙏 🍻 M8!!

I guess it's like relationships though - either you're similar enough to the other person that you think along the same lines and never argue, and power each other forward, or you're different enough that you take each other out of your comfort zone and you can grow together in different ways. In between those, it kinda sucks. These guys are nearly polar opposite in technique and feel, and it's constructive.
Having said that... if you want to grow the channel short term by cashing in on the Aussie angle, John Farnham's Help live is the next step :) Farnsey and Barnsey are the gods of Aussie music, and that performance is beyond perfection - nobody should be able to sing like he does. It's a cover of the beatles track, but done as a ballad instead of manic-paced, which is arguably a less interesting take, but his singing...

I have never heard of this band, & boy am I happy I have now. The very first thing I thought was "this guy sounds like Bon Scott". That makes me happy, because I really love pre- Brian Johnson AC/DC. I loved Brian Johnson era also, I'll forever be grateful I had the privilege of seeing them in Vancouver, Canada, I think around 2010. Year could be wrong, but I recall my daughter being around 15 or 16. They're on my top 3 best concerts of all time, without a doubt. And I've been to a few

Aussie here, 57 years old. Grew up with Cold Chisel in my formative years and have never stopped listening to them. Saw them in many venues, pubs in their early days, too many concerts to name. Whenever I’d take a date out it would be Cold Chisel playing in the car whether she liked it or not! When the War is Over Flame Trees Saturday Night Breakfast at Sweethearts Khe Sahn Cheap Wine All songs you should cover. There’s a relentless thread of lost opportunities, lost love, melancholy, redemption and bitterness in their timeless songs. One of the greatest Aussie bands ever formed. If you ever happen to be in an Aussie Pub when Khe Sahn starts playing be prepared to hug and sing with your fellow man! Peace.
The song is a sort of anthem to the great 'Top End', the tropical north of Australia, to which many Aussies have an attraction. It's fine, if you like the heat, the rain, the cyclones and the saltwater crocodiles, which take a few people on the regular. It's a very particular addiction.
The Three greatest guitar players in Australia (in no particular order) Ian Moss (Cold Chisel), Martin Rotsey (Midnight Oil), and James Moginie (Midnight Oil).

These guys and all of the bands of this time 9late 60s to mid 80's) had to be able to play live. We'd go to the local pub to listen to a couple of bands nearly every weekend and a live performance could make or break them. Australian pub rock was such a strong industry, with dozens of pubs having bands 2 or 3 nights a week and they would be the same bands we would hear on the radio. A lot of international acts were told to do "a round of the pubs" before playing here to see what was expected of them and how the crowds react and after a while many of the big bands would do a night or two here or there under a false name as a warm up and loved it. My sisters brother in law did the lighting for many big touring bands and names from Queen to Rod Stewart, Elton John etc but always loved doing the local bands because they were just so much fun.
It reminds me of the scene I cut my teeth on…. Southern states…. 4 1 hour sets a night 6-7 nights a week…..we played around 1000 shows in the 5 years I was in that band. We got pretty good. The Canadian scene wasnt nearly as intense.
Jimmy does great high harmonies. Have a look at his duet of Simply the Best with Tina Turner. Love this one with Ian Moss on vocals. This band had a great songwriter, truly great.
I tried to introduce friends in the States to Bow River and so much more years ago.. they wanted nothing to do with it...!!!!! Ohhh dear.. now people can't get enough of what we in Australia have always known. They are all the real deal.. play just about anything under the table any day of the week.

Here is a Cold Chisel song i believe was written around 2015 All Hell Broke Lucy. I would suggest listening to the Studio one first because the lyrics are easier to understand then check out the Live version. This is one of my all time favourite Cold Chisel song's.
I don't think Jimmy was wrapped about the stage. Or around seating. When they sang Flame Trees, he said to the crowd, "Now we can ignore you on every side. The band was Fraternity Bon left in 1973. Jimmy's brother John (Swanee) Swan replaced Bon when he went to AC/DC from 74 - 76 and Jimmy joined the band from 75-76.
As already said, Bon and Jimmy were in Fraternity and also in Fraternity, in between the two was John Swan (Swanee) who is Jimmy’s older brother. Jimmy was born James Swan but changed his surname to Barnes. 🙂
Before Bon Scott was in Fraternity he was in another band "The Valentines". We had one of their songs as our wedding song. I have seen Chisel several times . The best gig was at Bathurst in 1983 .,about 8 months before their first split . It was a great gig , they sounded fantastic .
Like most bands of this era they sound so good and so tight because they paid their dues playing in pubs for years; and some rough joints too, into the early hours of the morning.
I know it….I played the southern USA circuit circa 92-95…..we played 4 one hr sets per night and we played 7 nights a week for months at a time….2 weeks off then do it again (we played local Canadian gigs during our off weeks) it definitely makes you a lot better really quickly!! That’s how it was back then….ppl today don’t get it.

We had the best music had to offer. The Aussie pub band circuit, beer, music and sheilas. It was a great time to grow up. The last stand 1983 was an epic concert Sydney entertainment centre.

Every aussie knows this song but very few know the place..Bow river is a mostly dry tributary that runs into Lake Argile in western australia when it rains in the desert the place comes alive..there is a camp there..pack the 4x4 and take the trip after the wet season,it will be life changing.
Not dry in the Wet season ! In the wet it is bloody wet and the song mentioned the wet, it was a diamond mine and that is what the song is about getting out the factory job in the city and doing 12 hours a day in the diamond mine
My hubby use to work at Argyle Diamond Mine and another mine nearby called Saly Malay. Think that's how you spell it. He said the gave up replacing the sign for Bow River as it kept getting knicked lol
@@KikiBabe-km2mmDefinately drenched in the wet season. Argyle Diamond Mine always had a struggle keeping up with water at the bottom of the mine in the wet. The pumps worked flat strap. Hubby was there for about 8 years before it closed. One of his favorite sites he has been on in his 20 plus mining career. I have my own piece of Argyle. 3 pink diamond rings. Very rare. I'm one lucky girl.

Cold Chisel has recently announced they will be touring Australia together aging later this year (2024). All in their 70's, Barnesie recovering from heart surgery, but all still rockin'. Loooking forward to it!

I listened to Cold Chisel for thousands of hours in my youth. The harmonies ring like nothing I've heard. I'd try to sing along, at a cost to my vocal chords. I wondered if I had bias as an Aussie, but 30+ years on I've rediscovered their excellence.

They harmonise so well because... Ian is control, smooth, sweet, and Jimmy is raw uncontrolled seething power. And that's the whole point of the song. It's a cry to escape civilisation and return to the wild.
Generally siblings harmonize best together because their voices are so similar…..I should’ve pointed out in video but Barnes sings different when he’s harmonizing vs singing lead….it’s subtle but definitely there

I guess it's like relationships though - either you're similar enough to the other person that you think along the same lines and never argue, and power each other forward, or you're different enough that you take each other out of your comfort zone and you can grow together in different ways. In between those, it kinda sucks. These guys are nearly polar opposite in technique and feel, and it's constructive.
Having said that... if you want to grow the channel short term by cashing in on the Aussie angle, John Farnham's Help live is the next step :) Farnsey and Barnsey are the gods of Aussie music, and that performance is beyond perfection - nobody should be able to sing like he does. It's a cover of the beatles track, but done as a ballad instead of manic-paced, which is arguably a less interesting take, but his singing...
Obviously 'When The War is Over' is another example of how their voices work together amazingly well.

I have never heard of this band, & boy am I happy I have now. The very first thing I thought was "this guy sounds like Bon Scott". That makes me happy, because I really love pre- Brian Johnson AC/DC. I loved Brian Johnson era also, I'll forever be grateful I had the privilege of seeing them in Vancouver, Canada, I think around 2010. Year could be wrong, but I recall my daughter being around 15 or 16. They're on my top 3 best concerts of all time, without a doubt. And I've been to a few

Aussie here, 57 years old. Grew up with Cold Chisel in my formative years and have never stopped listening to them. Saw them in many venues, pubs in their early days, too many concerts to name. Whenever I’d take a date out it would be Cold Chisel playing in the car whether she liked it or not!

I saw Barnsey back in 92 at Broncos oval when he did his Rock &Soul tour. Was a small venue and was able to get right up the stage. What memories!!!!

The song is a sort of anthem to the great 'Top End', the tropical north of Australia, to which many Aussies have an attraction. It's fine, if you like the heat, the rain, the cyclones and the saltwater crocodiles, which take a few people on the regular. It's a very particular addiction.

These guys and all of the bands of this time 9late 60s to mid 80's) had to be able to play live. We'd go to the local pub to listen to a couple of bands nearly every weekend and a live performance could make or break them. Australian pub rock was such a strong industry, with dozens of pubs having bands 2 or 3 nights a week and they would be the same bands we would hear on the radio. A lot of international acts were told to do "a round of the pubs" before playing here to see what was expected of them and how the crowds react and after a while many of the big bands would do a night or two here or there under a false name as a warm up and loved it.
My sisters brother in law did the lighting for many big touring bands and names from Queen to Rod Stewart, Elton John etc but always loved doing the local bands because they were just so much fun.
It reminds me of the scene I cut my teeth on…. Southern states…. 4 1 hour sets a night 6-7 nights a week…..we played around 1000 shows in the 5 years I was in that band. We got pretty good. The Canadian scene wasnt nearly as intense.
Jimmy does great high harmonies. Have a look at his duet of Simply the Best with Tina Turner. Love this one with Ian Moss on vocals. This band had a great songwriter, truly great.
He did a really nice duet with Marcia Hines too - it's on YT somewhere. So versatile.

I tried to introduce friends in the States to Bow River and so much more years ago.. they wanted nothing to do with it...!!!!! Ohhh dear.. now people can't get enough of what we in Australia have always known. They are all the real deal.. play just about anything under the table any day of the week.

Bow River is in the Kimberleys of Western Australia near Lake Argyle. Apparently the band liked the name and made a song of it.

Here is a Cold Chisel song i believe was written around 2015 All Hell Broke Lucy. I would suggest listening to the Studio one first because the lyrics are easier to understand then check out the Live version. This is one of my all time favourite Cold Chisel song's.

I don't think Jimmy was wrapped about the stage. Or around seating. When they sang Flame Trees, he said to the crowd, "Now we can ignore you on every side. The band was Fraternity Bon left in 1973. Jimmy's brother John (Swanee) Swan replaced Bon when he went to AC/DC from 74 - 76 and Jimmy joined the band from 75-76.
Cold Chisel broke up in 83 so Mossy is definitely a 70s guitar hero 😊
As already said, Bon and Jimmy were in Fraternity and also in Fraternity, in between the two was John Swan (Swanee) who is Jimmy’s older brother. Jimmy was born James Swan but changed his surname to Barnes. 🙂
And Ian Moss was with Bon’s ex-wife after they’d split

Before Bon Scott was in Fraternity he was in another band "The Valentines". We had one of their songs as our wedding song. It was introduced as "and now for the wedding dance, with Bon Scott singing" leading into the opening riff of Highway to Hell before cutting to this with a scratch between the two....

Like most bands of this era they sound so good and so tight because they paid their dues playing in pubs for years; and some rough joints too, into the early hours of the morning.
I know it….I played the southern USA circuit circa 92-95…..we played 4 one hr sets per night and we played 7 nights a week for months at a time….2 weeks off then do it again (we played local Canadian gigs during our off weeks) it definitely makes you a lot better really quickly!! That’s how it was back then….ppl today don’t get it.
