My daughter just called me very upset because her dealership in Atlanta charged her $200 to look at this issue and told her it’s a $4700 repair. They said they have to replace roof rails and the headliner due to stains. This is why they are called stealerships. I’ll be doing this when she comes home for Christmas. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you very much I had water coming in the roof of my 2019 rav4 I did the the fix for less than $20 and it worked the dealer wanted to charge me over $1000 Thanks again
Thanks! This method worked for any cars with leaking roof rail. My 2012 Volvo XC60 started leaking at A-pillar at 10 years old. It's not from windshield. Not from sunroof drain. It turned out to be leaking from roof rail bolt holes around the gaskets. I sealed them with Sikaflex polyurethane-based Construction Sealant and no more water leak! I think it'll happen to any car eventually so it's good to learn how to do this. The seal is not going to last forever. 10 years is the time it's likely fail even it won't leak for new cars. No need to caulk the whole roof channel like some people did. That's just dumb. The water channel act as gutter to divert water to back and front of the car.
It's sad that Toyota knows the gaskets will fail, issued a voluntary recall but will not repair it until AFTER the water damage has occurred. Thanks for the video. Just fixed in on our 2021 RAV4
Excellent video. This is the simplest repair technique for the roof rail leak recommended on the RAV4World forum. Only thing to add is at the very front of the rail in front of that long white clip there is a flat rectangular clip that you should put a new piece of 3M double sided tape on to replace the OEM tape. Other than the silicon you can use butyl rubber caulk or tape. Also you can just seal up the holes in the roof with plugs or caulk and just use the 10mm bolts to hold on the rails.
After watching and reading your comment, that would be my recommendation also. I work in the aircraft repair industry and I used a different sealant design to withstand all the stresses of fight.

Great video! Just washed my rav4 2019 and noticed that both front pillars were wet. Found this video and bought the products to do the repair. Surprised that Toyota did not make this a recall. Be careful when removing the rails the main front white mounting plug can break off part of it’s mounting assembly from the rail itself. If this does not work I will be plugging the holes .
Just called Toyota and they said until it leaks they won’t do anything to my car. That’s crazy. It’s not a recall in Canada. It should be as it can knock out the electrical.
I just did this. Thanks for the video. One thing though...when I replaced the roof rails after your recommended process, I did not feel or hear any "click" when pressing the rails back into place. This leads me to suspect that the old clip screws did not penetrate the holes in the roof. Would you recommend I repeat the repair and discard the plastic clips altogether??

Nice work! BTW water leak issue not only happened on RAV4, but also on the Corolla Cross. I don’t get it why Toyota still use this kind of design for their new cars.
Wifey just noticed a pillar is wet after a full day of almost nonstop rain, she heard water moving around above her head. Wondering if the rails drain thru the same place as when water enters the sunroof. I visibly verified the front holes of the sunroof are clear, I mean we never open it so other then dust I saw no debry. Guessing I'll have to disassemble the tracks, reading thru comment I wont even waste time going to dealer since I am out of warranty
I saw a video where the sunroof is known to clog. You have to clear the drain or else it will come into you car. So it could be the sunroof or the racks or both causing your problem.
This just happened to me today. I heard water in the car and couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. There is water stains inside above the windows. I called the dealer and made an appointment but I will cancel because I’m not paying over a thousand dollars for that. The only thing that concerns me is the water that I hear swishing around. Can I get that out? Will it damage anything? Edit: I took the car in and Toyota is covering it. It was “approved”. Specialist are coming out to clean the mold. The headliner will also be replaced. It’s gonna take about three weeks or so because of the mold. I did get a rental. A recall would have avoided all of this.
I need the dealer to fix this for me! Because it already affected the electrical system. The "mud/sand" modes are activated by themselves, the security systems too. The driver's seat is heated as if it were active.
@@HowToWithLechAfter all this time until this weekend we are going to receive the rav4 from the workshop. That's how bad the damage was..now it turns out that we received another letter for the clutch change...it seems that mine also has that damage...
As if 12/11/23 Toyota hasn’t issued a a recall or a TSB on the problem. I’ve spoken with a few dealers and Toyota is well aware of the situation. Hopefully they’ll get it right.
OMG Same exact thing & same time frame (3) years. Wasn’t yours covered under warranty? I think 🤔 it’s covered under warranty (36) months or certain number of mileage.
This is a factory defect...and Toyota does not want to respond...and it also affects the electrical system, it also creates mold inside the car and you don't realize it.

So, this just started happening in my 2020. How do I drain/dry the inside where the water was building up from the leak?
We just let if be and dried out. Some little stains inside but not bad. Try Maybe running heat inside to try out. Even throw a home dehumidifier in there. Use dry vac etc. otherwise, take apart.
Does waterproof silicone work as well as the gasket maker?
Should be ok. Use automotive etc
Good video! I would only add the 3M tape to the front as was mentioned before.
Yes. Agreed 👍
did they fix this problem? I have a 2024 model.
Supposedly but getting mixed feedback
I just received a letter from Toyota yesterday they are going to fix this issue and guarantee it for 10 years, they say its not a recall, but they are going to fix it
Nice. Thanks for sharing.
Hello , Which is the dimension of each gasket ? I Buy a box with the different gaskets , but i not know is the correct , please your help . Regards from Mexico !
You should search by your cars model year.
But when I see the car again I’ll try check
Also. Skip the gaskets. Do what I did to be honest
Super helpful.Great presentation
Thanks !!!
thank you
Thank you so much!!!! You're not getting enough likes for this!!!
Thanks 😉👊
Would this work on a 2018? Im having the same issue also
Yeah. Same idea
@@HowToWithLech Thank you
Again! Very good explaining and job as well.
Thanks 👊
Is there still this problem in 2021?
In the United States, do we know if Toyota covers this now under the warranty?
I see mixed results in the comments section...
Supposedly now they might
Yes they do
Just tried the technique on my 2020 Rav4 XSE, fingers crossed, thanks!!
👍
I just did this to my car. I know it’s been awhile but did this work for you?
@@georgiataylor9473 yep been good ever since!!
@@cwbetb good to hear it's still working I'm going to do it .
Nice work!
BTW water leak issue not only happened on RAV4, but also on the Corolla Cross. I don’t get it why Toyota still use this kind of design for their new cars.
Nothing surprises me anymore. Nothing is made to last
Wifey just noticed a pillar is wet after a full day of almost nonstop rain, she heard water moving around above her head.
Yeah. Do it. Worth it
I saw a video where the sunroof is known to clog. You have to clear the drain or else it will come into you car. So it could be the sunroof or the racks or both causing your problem.
I if I havnt had a leak should I leave it alone or make this repair?
Probably will need to do at some point. I would recommend
what are the clips on the roof rail called? Im missing one and Im trying to find the part
Just search for Toyota RAV4 etc…Roof Rail Bolt Hole Covers Bar Caps Trims Clips
Yeah. They are finally cover it. Took forever.
@rogersimpson2093 Have the same truck . Did you do both sides or one side?
anyone know the size of the hole? I am looking for rubber plug on it. Thanks
Don’t remember. Maybee 5mm or so
Thank you for this!
👍👊
I need the dealer to fix this for me! Because it already affected the electrical system. The "mud/sand" modes are activated by themselves, the security systems too. The driver's seat is heated as if it were active.
Ahh. Stinks. Keep eye out for lawsuit against Toyota to be honest
Toyota is now covering the repair costs.
@@TNhunterKMC I hope so ! I'm going to the workshop today
@@TNhunterKMC nice!
@@HowToWithLechAfter all this time until this weekend we are going to receive the rav4 from the workshop. That's how bad the damage was..now it turns out that we received another letter for the clutch change...it seems that mine also has that damage...
THANK YOU! I wondered what was going on and how to fix it!
Yeah. Crazy right
@@HowToWithLech just did this last night on my highlander
@@robshaw2990 nice!
How long will the Permatex Gasket Maker last for?
I’m sure for years at least. Longer than those rubber ones probably
What size gasket o ring is needed??
I used the gasket maker. Gaskets we’re too thick to pop in.
What are the products you used for this?
Permatex 82180 Ultra Black Maximum Oil Resistance RTV Silicone Gasket Maker. Link in Desc.
Thank for the video Toyota supposed recall all those Toyota I have a 2019 XLE premium I don’t have that problem not yet
Hope you won’t. 👍👊
As if 12/11/23 Toyota hasn’t issued a a recall or a TSB on the problem. I’ve spoken with a few dealers and Toyota is well aware of the situation. Hopefully they’ll get it right.
Is it possible to sue toyota for this problem
Where can i order that plastic clips??
eBay. Amazon
Many thanks for the tip, mine is next.

I squeezed gasket maker paste into the roof track. I popped it up with a credit card and did it with no other tools.
👊
Yea baby, knowledge = power, thx.
👍👊
Will this still happen if you have roof racks installed ?
On this year/model. Will happen regardless. If yiu have those rails on the car. It’s a matter of time
@@HowToWithLech where does the water come in from , is it the lid that you can open and close ?
@@recordgalaxy those holes where the tabs snap into. thats why the new gasket seal is needed.
Thank you so much! May God bless you and your family.🕊🙏🏻
Thanks 🙏👍
Did anyone have issues with mold from all that water getting into the car?
FYI. Toyota now covering the repairs and damage
Just did the same thing, how is yours holding up?
All good so far 👊
Thanks I have this problem right now...
👍
OMG Same exact thing & same time frame (3) years. Wasn’t yours covered under warranty? I think 🤔 it’s covered under warranty (36) months or certain number of mileage.
Happens a lot. Not sure about warranty
This is a factory defect...and Toyota does not want to respond...and it also affects the electrical system, it also creates mold inside the car and you don't realize it.
Thank you so much for the video. You're awesome 👌
Thanks 👊👍
So did it end up leaking again or ?
No more leaking. This fixes it
Genius
👊👍
Great video, thanks!

I have problem with my rav4 sunroof leaking 2024

I have the same problem 😢with my R4 2019 and Miller Toyota want to me to pay $500 dollars what I think it’s ridiculous
Wow. That was good price compared to most. Supposedly Toyota covering it now. Some said
