I am a child of the 50s and 60s. Our generation had the best music ever! No auto-tune, just pure, raw talent. Don't see or hear much like that. The way music should be!

Yessa! Just like our parents loved Lawrence Welk. Hey!! "The way music should be." Naw.....No, this is great music of our time. They just couldn't admit it. eg. ELO, Chicago, Righteous Bros., Home Frees' acapella, Fleetwood Mac and SO many great other songs.

This is the incomparable Counter Tenor voice of the late great Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brother's. This great performance was done (58) years ago in (1965) on the Andy Williams Show. This song was composed by multi-award-winning composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret. It was used as the movie score for the (1955) Prision Movie "Unchained."
This Epic performance was done ten years later (Live) with the greatest music arrangement of this song by the NBC Studio Orchestra ever. This version has become the quintessential version of "Unchained Melody" of them all. Recording artist since 1965 have used this version ever since. Bobby Hatfield and the NBC Studio Orchestra gave a performance that was one for the ages. It has gone down as the greatest (Live) television performance ever...

The first time I heard this song (in the 1960s...I'm old) I was driving from Chicago to Minneapolis. It came on the radio and I was so moved by it I had to pull off the road so I wouldn't run into a ditch. Such beauty!! Thank you for reacting to my nostalgia. Well done.

Righteous Brothers were Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield. That was Bobby singing this song. They had an agreement that they would allow each to record one solo per album to showcase their individual talents. This song was released on the B side of a record, but after a radio station played it, it became one of the most iconic songs in history. The story goes that the way they got the name "The Righteous Brothers" is they were playing in a club, when a person there listening to them shouted "that's righteous brothers" and they liked the way it sounded and took that as their stage name.

Back in the 50, 60, and 70's the artist actually had talent and when singing live they sounded like they did in the studio, unlike most of today. The Rightous Brothers
consist of Bill Melody who was offstage and Bobby Hatfield. What you heard was called Blue- Eyed Soul Music. Try "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", " Soul and Insperation" both from the 60's or "Rock N Roll Heaven" from the 70's. They are with both artist. The song " Unchained Melody " was in the movie
    "Ghost" and
"You' ve Lost That Loving Feeling" was in the movie
"Top Gun". Unfortunlly in 2003 we lost the talants of Bobby Hatfield and he woll be greatly missed. RIP now that you are in Rock N Roll Heaven.

There were 2 brothers(not real brothers). You are listening to Bobby Hatfield, the other has a much lower voice and his name is Bill Medley. Some of their songs are "You've lost that loving feeling", "You'll never walk alone" from the Ed Sullivan Show, which really showcases their 2 different voices, and "Soul and Inspiration". "Ebb Tide" is another Bobby Hatfield solo.

Bobby Hatfield was a singer extraordinaire, his voice was addictive and magical. With him, you did not just hear the song, you felt it to your soul! Bobby has many solos and you would not be wasting your time to listen to all of them. A few of my favorites are: Stay With Me, My Prayer, Love You For Sentimental Reasons, Ebb Tide, For Your Love, and Only You, but there are many others! Bobby was unique and there will never be another like him!
Fun fact: Bobby was a sports hero in school and was scouted for pro baseball when he was in college, but he chose his music instead. It would have been a crime to never have heard his version of this beautiful song!! New subscriber just because you appreciated the greatness of this song and the man who sang it!
Oh yes, Bobby and Bill did have some great songs together as well: You've Lost That Loving Feeling, Soul and Inspiration, and one of my favorites by the both of them, I'm So Lonely. For me though, Bobby was the voice for the Righteous Brothers!

As somebody else recommended, back up this video to see the amusing chat with Bobby, Bill and the show’s host, Andy Williams.
Bill was kidding when he said he didn’t think this song would be a hit. They had decided to do a solo on each album and they each wanted to sing it so they flipped a coin. Fortunately, Bobby won.
To hear both singers together, start with “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling”.

Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher countertenor voice to Bill Medley’s William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. In 2003, Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63.
*The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side.
    * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and he left. He said, 'No, I can do it better.' And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song."
    * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof."

Like @zanhar said only when TVs became affordable everybody realized they were white. Black singers owned Soul music and R&B they were phenomenal ! Before they were famous ( The Paramours ) they made a tour through the south when they performed in a saloon near a black marine base and some went see them.
They were so impressed that shouted what they used to : that's righteous, brothers! And that’s the name they choose. Best male vocal soprano and rare countertenor ❤ you are absolutely right …. melodies and voices like in the 60’s are missing ❤

Back then a lot of people thought they were black ... the term 'blue-eyed soul' was invented to describe their emotional singing that was 'way different from their white contemporaries. There are some great suggestions here for their hits (they had 22 songs on the Billboard Hot 100) but their first three years they sang rock n roll. Here's one of those... and there is no video because it was too 'hot' for TV or even radio, which were both pretty prudish 😂 th-cam.com/video/N6O-fFgl5vE/w-d-xo.html

There's 2 of them, but they both also did solo's.
Bill Medley (not in this video), and Bobby Hatfield (singing this) got their name when they sang to a group of Black Marines when one stood up after one of their songs and yelled "That's Righteous Brother!"
Known as "Blue Eyed Soul" they were probably one of the most influential "cross over" singers along with Elvis that brought the genre of Black Soul Music to White audiences.
They had several hits, and you can't go wrong with ANY of them...
When Bobby sang this, he had a head cold, and his mother was in the audience listening to him sing professionally for the very first time. The little smile at the end showed that he knew he NAILED it.. The song originally from a 1955 movie "Unchained" was from a letter written from a prison inmate to his girlfriend. Over 160 other artists covered this song, but NOBODY did it like Bobby!!

This song has been sung by many singers but none do it better than Bobby Hatfield. No auto tune or gimmicks just pure talent. The studio version of this song was in the film 'Ghost' but this live version is stupendous. He was suffering with a cold, his mother was watching him perform for the first time and he suffered with stage fright. When he gets to the last high note he does not contort his face like other singers but just bites his lip and smiles as if to say 'I nailed it'. Your video was out of sync with the music.

Bobby sang this song solo, but there are 2 of them, and they are not even brothers, they played at a club and after one of the song's a fan yelled "that's Righteous Brother" and that's how they got the name.

The Righteous Brothers each did a solo on each album. This was the B side to another song (on a 45) that got nowhere near the play--the immortality--this one achieved. It's acknowledged as the definitive version of this song, which was performed over the years by numerous other top performers and groups.

No autotune. People had real voices. This was called blue eyed soul - a real thing. Two Righteous Brothers. This was Bob's solo.

That is from The Andy Williams Show. The other "brother" and Andy joke around before the song. Also listen to "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" and "Soul and Inspiration".

Great stuff! The delay was unfortunate. Yes he’s a brother! Do more! He’s half of the Righteous Brothers!

    No autotune.
    No studio re-wiork
    No high tech equipment
Just a live voiced recirded from a wired hand held mucrophone in front if a live audience.
Vouces like that come along more rarely than truthful politicians.

Grew up with moms blasting this in the 80’s &90’s must be why I was told I had an old school at such a young age???Errr once younger age lol
And yeah- errybody know the song. They just don’t know who was actually singing it until they watched. Hell- other than mommas vinyl record, I ain’t know either lol. All I knew was Motown but maybe that’s bc moms is half n half? I ain’t got a clue but I knew good music when I heard it! That’s what you call raw talent and when we used to listen to records and ain’t no not care what color they was. Good music is good music. Moms knew what she was talking about.
