He had only studied and read about art up until that point in his life before his brother had him omitted to an psychiatric hospital/asylum due to him having many psychotic breakdowns (people think he had Borderline which was not discovered at point in time). The hospital was a progressive establishment for its time though and they treated patients in a very humane way. His brother begged the doctors to let Vincent paint as he knew it made him happy and he paid them enough to open a painting room just for him. Vincent then proceeded to paint every day for a year which was all of the time he spent there. He made Starry Night 🌃 and many other famous paintings in that very room. Lessons that you could take from this: If you love something it's never too late to start doing it. Practice makes perfect. And love from family and people can aid someone a long way ❤️☮️. He was very happy when he stayed there and sure he wasn't famous for his time but his art echoes through out eternity so that we can enjoy it and learn from his journey.
Just because BPD hadn't been discovered yet doesn't mean it didn't exist. You think you need modern psychology to be able to understand humans? That no one knew what they were talking about in regards to human behavior until people started writing books about it in the late 1800s? I'm pretty sure even 2000 years ago humans could tell if something was off in another human.
Interesting - I got back into music at 40, with no formal training or background in music theory. I had experience Sequencing Audio from 1992, using a program called OctaMed, & a few years DJ experience. I find it fascinating that a penniless & Hungry Impressionist conforms to the popular archetypal "Starving Artist." Folks assume that if you're not a WEALTHY Musician, then you must be a POOR (bad) Musician.
also he was fortunate to being able to do art, and the bills where paid by his brother...bug big help...some artists have to work hard to pay bills and free time is all to art
As someone who has struggled with this "caught in a loop" thing for years, I can say this video is very helpful. I found my way out by bruteforcing through some Arrangements, while giving zero fucks about the outcome or if the initial idea is good enough. If it sucked I just moved on to the next and then the next. Now it is a lot easier and almost all loops get at least arranged. I found also that often the seemingly "bad" ideas turned out to be quite good and more fun when arranged. And vice versa. I think if you love your initial idea too much it makes it harder to make the right decitions, regarding deleting or replacing certain elements. Trust the Process... and thanks Yalcin for your wonderful work.
You mentioned that loving your original idea too much can make it hard to make the right decision. This has proven to be 100% true for me. I find that I am scared to do anything for fear that I will mess up what I like and I end up setting it aside and starting something new… I have been thinking I need to start doing what you did and brute force them into an arrangement and not worry about it. I love that you share your insights on not only the technical sides of production but the psychological side as well. It's important to look at every studio session as 'practice' even if nothing super productive comes out of it. It's unrealistic to expect a releasable tune every time you open the DAW, in turn potentially creating a stressful & unenjoyable creative experience.

Just finished my 76 original tonight since 2019. And yeah the only way to get better is to finish and export then take it to your DJ rig and test it out with your other favorite tracks. The more you finish the better you'll get and the more confident you'll be. Everything you said in this video rings true to me. Esp the less is more. Tracks I was finishing and releasing 8 yrs ago had way too many elements and I would always force the mix instead of just finding/sticking to sounds that i really loved and that complimented each other naturally. Recently my objective is to finish the track with no more than 15 tracks/parts/layers. Focusing on getting a really really infectious groove and then automating the hell out of every little detail to make it sound different as the song plays. [Bonus tip: I usually work in 2hr chunks + taking 1 - 2 hr breaks to reset my ears/mind before going back in] Lastly, something i learned a while ago on the Arrangement process. I used to never finish tracks and would just have a whole bunch of grooves. Then I saw a video where a producer just took their favorite track at the moment and flushed out the arrangement in Ableton w/ each layer [just empty midi] and notated on the top "intro, build, 1st drop, 1st break, etc" until the end. Once I figured that out it really helped me finish songs and not get stuck w/ just a loop. Good luck. Keep on creating!

How? *It doesn't matter how, just do it!* The more you do (something in the project), the faster you will come to the finish line - you will be able to finish the track. If it is *very* difficult, you can "imitate" how others overcome this process: kick, bass, sub, hats, track 1, 2, etc. Just make more movements, because *life requires movement.* Aristotle

This is fucking hitting the issue on the nail! Not many people would talk about this! One great idea is 1000 times better than 1000 average ideas. This is coming from dealing with clients and going through 3 to 4 revisions and it's always the one with the best single idea. This right here is the most important tip! Ever! 🙏

My approach is straightforward: start by selecting a track you like and import it into your DAW. Set the correct BPM and mark key points throughout the track, labeling each based on the changes or actions that occur. Identify the bass key, then lower the volume of the reference track slightly. Begin creating your own music while playing the reference track in the background, using it as a guide. Pay attention to how the track is structured and build your beat in the same key. As you progress, gradually lower the volume of the reference track and adjust your arrangement to fit your vision. Later, bring the reference track back up to match your track’s volume and do an A/B comparison to check the mix and overall feel. The goal is not to copy the reference track but to use it as inspiration, helping you stay on track with your arrangement and build-ups. By working in the same key, you can achieve a mix that closely resonates with the original, which is crucial for achieving a similar sound. This method helps prevent creative blocks and keeps you moving forward in your production.

As you have probably experienced the same procces, sometimes execution makes stress and it is really hard to pass over in that situation. But I think this content is the cure!
What I love to do is research some song structures of the genre I'm working on... makes you think of your "loop" to evolve in a composition based on what other songs consist of. Once you studied a couple you know the building blocks and start building your own! Love what you're doing! Keep up the good stuff!
Funny that you say about starting with a chord progression and adding a melody after. I used to do that but I wasnt happy with it. Now Ive started writing a melody first, not worrying about key or anything, then I make the harmony around the melody. I find that gives more flexibility as changing the chords underpinning the melody can really change the vibe of the track. Instead of just having standard root note triads, I end up with a lot more extended or inverted chords, and even borrowed chords from different keys that for the melody and add great tension.

Don't get me wrong Yalcin, but it's much deeper than that. There is a lot of genres with different approaches, the best way to practice finishing songs is not just finishing them and moving on to the next, it's a good idea, but here's my take on this very complicated topic, I've been producing for around 6 years, I have around 20 tracks I am extremely proud of, still never finished one, but I'm slowly getting there. So here it is: -make a list of all your favorite artists -get your favorite tracks of them in your DAW of choice -listen to each and notice that many artists have different approaches -careful, don't get lost in the music, this is work you have to do -take notes or set tags in your daw on what happens at each point of the song, the key is to understand the track -pay attention to filtering, volume changes, use visual analyzers if you need to, there is so much FUCKING AUTOMATION to be done in order to finish your track it will make your head explode, but you need to realize that producing is not all fun and games, when it comes to finishing a track it's work and work can be tiresome -there are some tools that can take let's say a lead and make some weird sounds out of it, some producers use Output's Portal, it makes some granular atmospheric sounds, I've yet to try it, but can't wait to, let's say you have an arp melody, these tools take that melody and give you some textures/sounds that go nice with the melody, now you can put that in the intro, highcut the original sound, automate it, on the next bar start filtering some drum loop in and who knows, this might inspire you to make a whole build up -there's many options, endless, this is what's killing us, for me, a self proclaimed adhd perfectionist this is the biggest barrier I've had to face with my music, but you need to accept it, you need to pick something and let it be -now the best part, once you do this a lot it will become "muscle memory", just like when you sit down, make a melody idea, a bass idea, add some drums, the same will happen with finishing your music, it will become easier because you will find your way of doing things, your sound so to say -don't get lost in mixing/mastering in this arrangement process, it still happens to me, but the track needs to be finished first, arranged, then you can mix Good luck!

What I love to do is research some song structures of the genre I'm working on... makes you think of your "loop" to evolve in a composition based on what other songs consist of. Once you studied a couple you know the building blocks and start building your own! Love what you're doing! Keep up the good stuff!

Funny that you say about starting with a chord progression and adding a melody after. I used to do that but I wasnt happy with it. Now Ive started writing a melody first, not worrying about key or anything, then I make the harmony around the melody. I find that gives more flexibility as changing the chords underpinning the melody can really change the vibe of the track. Instead of just having standard root note triads, I end up with a lot more extended or inverted chords, and even borrowed chords from different keys that for the melody and add great tension.

This video is really a lifesaver for many music producers out there..
Don't get me wrong Yalcin, but it's much deeper than that.
There is a lot of genres with different approaches, the best way to practice finishing songs is not just finishing them and moving on to the next, it's a good idea, but here's my take on this very complicated topic, I've been producing for around 6 years, I have around 20 tracks I am extremely proud of, still never finished one, but I'm slowly getting there. So here it is:
-make a list of all your favorite artists
-get your favorite tracks of them in your DAW of choice
-listen to each and notice that many artists have different approaches
-careful, don't get lost in the music, this is work you have to do
-take notes or set tags in your daw on what happens at each point of the song, the key is to understand the track
-pay attention to filtering, volume changes, use visual analyzers if you need to, there is so much FUCKING AUTOMATION to be done in order to finish your track it will make your head explode, but you need to realize that producing is not all fun and games, when it comes to finishing a track it's work and work can be tiresome
-there are some tools that can take let's say a lead and make some weird sounds out of it, some producers use Output's Portal, it makes some granular atmospheric sounds, I've yet to try it, but can't wait to, let's say you have an arp melody, these tools take that melody and give you some textures/sounds that go nice with the melody, now you can put that in the intro, highcut the original sound, automate it, on the next bar start filtering some drum loop in and who knows, this might inspire you to make a whole build up
-there's many options, endless, this is what's killing us, for me, a self proclaimed adhd perfectionist this is the biggest barrier I've had to face with my music, but you need to accept it, you need to pick something and let it be
-now the best part, once you do this a lot it will become "muscle memory", just like when you sit down, make a melody idea, a bass idea, add some drums, the same will happen with finishing your music, it will become easier because you will find your way of doing things, your sound so to say
-don't get lost in mixing/mastering in this arrangement process, it still happens to me, but the track needs to be finished first, arranged, then you can mix

Great video. I think sometimes its easy to get focussed in on technical aspects and "amazing sound design", and kind of forget that truly great musical ideas usually sound great whether they produced on $10k modular synth or played on a humble $30 melodica.
