As a beginner who has been using the bottom-up arrangement style (without really thinking about it), this video is really helpful to get me to break out of it and look at reference tracks as well as looking at the arrangement in a more macro style. I find myself spending hours on micro arrangement and never finishing tracks so this video is fantastic.
Also, your explanation was broad enough to encompass all types of EDM so thank you for that!

I finally sat down and watched this video dam is it super-informative. Ive struggled with arrangements forever, making loops has become second nature but now i have some tricks and groundwork to use when moving to the arrangement so thank you so much. This is extremely helpful, especially the reference track idea. Always avoided it since most folks mention reference tracks but never elaborate on its use. Dont copy it, just identify the elements in that arrangement and use it as a springboard for what to include in a section or ultimately how to start from scratch. Amazing video!

The way you're cleaning the parts 19:00 remind me of a jazz improvisation class when my teacher told me that you can think of the phrases like big chunks using a scale that work trough some chord changes (Macro Arrangement) or a phrase that takes each chord arpeggio to create a phrase (micro arrangement) different concepts but damn awesome the way you are explaining this!

This is hands down the best, most inspiring, most simple to understand and most beautifully explained description of how to build a track I've seen, I've watched a lot and I think I've gained more from this than any other and we don't even have the same DAW but the way you've explained it all is completely independent of DAW features or at least I've taken away enough from this to utilise my own.
Litterally almost every tutorial I've seen from Ableton producers has been more about how to do things in Ableton like yeah use this key command or create this macro to speed things up, same with logic and cubase etc and by the end of it I'm like shit, I've got studio one so wtf do but you've avoided all of that and explained in basic terms how to achieve musical goals not how wonderful certain software is so thank you, thank you very very much, totally earned subscription, respect and appreciation for sharing your knowledge in a way I understand.
    Amazing!!

Really enjoyed watching this! Ive used both of these styles while trying to perfect my workflow. The (single) top down approach is really working for me right now. I’ve used the bottom up method a lot, I’ve realised you can waste a lot of time working like that though. A few times Ive spent hours trying to get things to gel together, and ended up scrapping everything except the chorus. Much easier to just start with that! Neat trick with the midi track as a labelling tool too!

Something I would highly recommend is to keep your ideas and loops, store the patches and keep the midi rolls, and stitch those ideas together. You can have like 2 or 3 loops, and end up with a full arrangement from just those 2 or 3 ideas.
Like sometimes you have a chorus ready, but you just don't know it, and you'd have a loop where that idea might work as the chorus if you transpose it to the same key and bpm. It's not always going to work out of the box, but usually it does if you tweak the drums to fit everything else.
I cannot stress how much just changing from a closed hat to an open hat can make things sound really big in the chorus.
This way you waste a lot less time, and get more songs out of what you can currently do.
You can always strip those ideas down (for instance, removing the hats, snare or kick, or even the pad) to make breaks and/or verses that can build up to the full version to keep things interesting, too.
It's also worth trying to mix and match different things (add a different chord progression for the last chorus, exchange or add variations on the melody for different verse/chorus/break sections) and see if they work better. Sometimes you have good ideas, just not in the right places.
All of these things help you rethink what you've done so far, because often the reason you don't like an idea is not because the idea itself is bad, but it's just a couple components not fitting with the rest of what you've made.

Great video and advice. I create my individual tracks in MPC, then stem out and arrange in DAW (cubase) like this… kind of. You’ve helped me loads with your structured arrangement midi track. It’s tons more graphical and helpful than basic marker track. Cheers! 🎉
