  • In this video tutorial series, I'll explain basic concepts of the Subharmonicon Sequencer and Rhythm Generator. In the end, we'll build a basic Chord Progression to provide harmonic structure to a Sequence from the Mother-32.
    This video series is designed to give a basic and thorough overview of the Moog Subharmonicon. The Subharmonicon can be very difficult to get the hang of. This series breaks down the complexities of the Subharmonicon into small and manageable chunks. By the end of the series, you'll have a strong understanding of each part and how it contributes to the overall sound as well as how it interacts with the other parts. Additionally, the videos will cover how to use the patchbay and give helpful pairing tips so you can build your own Subharmonicon patches.
    There are more resources on my Patreon Page including a full color eBook of DFAM patches with links to tutorial videos as well as other sound studio patches and notes. The eBook will be updated regularly with new patches and tips.

    This is a great insight into how to use theory in composition - I normally just play around until I find something I like - a bit of planning clearly goes a very long way. Sounds epic!

      Likewise. Finding minor chords have been incredibly difficult for me but I think looking up the progression via numbers vs letters helps a lot. Also I always hit the knobs which also change the note lol thought it was just me! Haha

    Thanks so much for this!!!!! I have regularly considered selling mine as i just can't get an understanding of it... However, this video has taught me more about the SubH than any other video i've watched!! Or even moreso that reading the manual i might add!!

    Really helpful vid mate, I like your pace and explanations, thankyou. I’m nearly 24 hours in with this wild beast and needed some direction, this video is a wonderful starting point 👍🏼👍🏼 I’m hearing ‘Tomorrow Wendy’ by Concrete Blonde with that chord progression. BTW, when you were fiddling about in the +5 octave range, i dialled the sequencer 1 steps down deep to the left and there’s some meaty bass to play with in amongst there. Let’s keep that secret between the two of us ✌🏼

    Nice series. Set camera to Manual Focus - Focus on the module and it won't hunt when you bring your hands in and out.

      Yeah... I kept forgetting to do that.... Since making these I've bought a dedicated camera so I can just leave it with my TH-cam setup and never touch the focus switch! So much better.

    Thank you for the great tutorial series! Today I‘ve been watching 5 parts and will surely continue. In contrast to all other tutorials which I’ve seen, you‘re not only focussing on a technical explanation, but you‘re also showing how to use the SH to develop musical ideas. Really great and absolutely unique, I‘m already curious what will come next 😊.

      Awesome! So glad you're enjoying it. I'm really excited to put out the video I'm filming later today. It's right along these lines and builds a chord progression with arpeggios that extends beyond 4 steps...! Really excited about it! :)

    5+- seq Oct used cleverly can be really interesting when using subharmonicon to animate a dfam.
    Using octaves and mathematics yields good results …

    Great videos but I was really hoping to see musically coherent and interesting ways to sequence the suboscillators. I have stumbled upon some fun stuff sequencing them but only really by trial and error. Haven't really grokked the math needed to plan something musical by sequencing them along with the VCO's.

    • @braintree56
      @braintree56  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We'll get there! The series is a work in progress. I wanted to start out with something super simple to show how the osc work. I have a video on the Rhythm generators coming out soon. Then I'm going to dive into more Music theory, etc.

      I had a play with this and then used the second oscillator on the second sequencer with 12ET to add major and minor thirds as appropriate for the 1 5 6 4 progression. I don't know if I'd use the SH as a chord pad like this because it leaves out a bunch of the rhythmic stuff one might want to do but… yeah, it's a way to get triad chords instead of power chords.

    sorry for my ignorance, I'm a noob. i think ive got it set up correctly but the mother note changes everytime the sub hits 1 , so its going way to fast, any idea what i'm doing wrong? thanx!!

    • @braintree56
      @braintree56  ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be a number of things. Let's see if we can figure it out. Are you saying that the sub is going faster than the Mother? How are your Synths connected together?

    • @thagrizzaify
      @thagrizzaify ปีที่แล้ว

      @@braintree56 yes, 1 step on mother =4 on the sub .
      I have patch cords connecting them the same as you

    • @braintree56
      @braintree56  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@thagrizzaify Ok, the first things that come to mind are - 1. Check the Assignable output setting to make sure it's set to the default setting.
      2. Make sure the sequencer on the Mother is playing 16th notes.
      I have videos later in the series on all those... I would start there.
