    being born in New Zealand as a child growing up we were taught about the great man that was Nelson Mandela. We were taught about Mandela and his people's fight trying to break down the racist white minority establishment that controlled South Africa. To this day it does'nt bode well with me as a rugby fan the 1981 Springbok tour of NZ. I would love to think the protests in NZ (even though NZ is a small country in the greater scheme of things), in a small way during that 1981 tour did something to help breakdown the racist control of South Africa during the apartheid era.

    • @wellsht7830
      @wellsht7830 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It absolutely did!
      South African here and let me just say if it wasn’t for the international pressure that was applied onto the apartheid government to change their racist ways, there’s a chance that we’d still be living under the regime. It’s sad to think but it seems that one of the reasons for black/POC liberation was because South Africa was being isolated from the rest of the world, especially in sports like the Rugby World Cup, Olympics etc. You may think that your protest didn’t make a big impact, but yours and all the other international protests greatly helped us in gaining back our rights and freedoms.

Didn't know anything about rugby till I arrived in Australia and believe me I still don't know much about the game. But something I have learnt is that sports is God's way to right all the wrongs that humans do in earth. At my age I am starting to understand many things around the world. It's the first time thst I see this footage other than the movie Invictus that I loved. I am so grateful to have seen this video and so lucky to understand the important moment in modern history.

    The match itself was as total slug fest and defensive battle for the ages. Matches like that nearly always come down to conditioning and who wants it more. On that day South Africa simply refused to be denied. This despite pretty much unanimous opinion in the Rugby world that they faced inevitable defeat. Aside from the geopolitical implications of the match, this is a very compelling "guy story" just on its face. it is the stuff every boy and most men dream of privately. Of facing impossible odds, going on anyway, and winning.

      @@grainster Because the semi-final between SA and France was a disgrace of refereeing, 3 tries refused for France and the only try scored by SA was not valid (Even Kruger, the SA player that scored it said it afterwards). Then the fact that the ABs were suddenly all sicks just before the final raised suspicion of poisoning. Finally, the fact that SA players were likely using illicite products for doping (SA captain Pienaar himself said that they were taking pills). All of that makes this World Cup a disgrace for the sport, but this is usually shadowed by the beautiful story of a post-apartheid South Africa winning.
