I can tell there will be people that will not support the pace with which I narrate this story, but from where I am, delineating a story that requires a bit of 4th dimensional thinking was the bigger challenge and focus for me (I'm not slowing down for those folks, so keep up please as we discuss time travel and multi-world travel). This is one of those where pictures show the flow for this story better, but I did my best. Definitely had to revisit it a few times to make sure it made sense with continuity and trimmed for length (12k words gets me to 1 hr at a brisk speaking pace). This took longer than I would have preferred, so I appreciate the patience of those awaiting this final chapter. This marks another series closed for RECAPitation, which makes me glad, and oddly enough, another visual novel about a massive death game.

Imagine someone who bought the game at full price when it came out and played timeline 0-a thinking it was the only ending
Bought the game without any knowledge of the previous games and got the ending right from the get go. It took me like 3 months to find out I was far from finishing the game.

Seventeen years ago, a young mother went jogging in the park. She reached a fork where she usually goes right, but on this day she decided to go left. Why? Because there was a snail on the path. No one knows why she avoided the snail. Was she afraid of them? Or felt a sense of danger from it? Whatever the case may be, the snail caused her to switch to the left path. As a result, she was killed by a girl.
The suspect who was taken into custody, a Japanese man, was not the culprit. He was falsely convicted and executed, and his wife committed suicide in her grief. The two children were left behind.
The convicted man called a taxi before his arrest, but the taxi ended up picking up another fare instead, a brilliant young surgeon. However, the car became involved in an accident, killing the surgeon as well as the young boy who was waiting for an operation by the surgeon.
If that snail hadn't been on the right path 17 years ago, what would have happened? Life is simply unfair, don't you think?

That number is wrong. On the wiki page it says in 2018 it sold over 38k copies on steam alone.
Fans didn't really hate it either, it was just considered a weaker entry.

24 thousand copies? That's... Almost nothing! Far worse games have sold for more! 100 thousand would be a decent goal for a game like this right? Did they massively undersell?
Actually yes, yes it did. It passed through a terrible developer's hell where the game was nearly not finished. They even had to use Kick Starter to finish paying for it. The main writer himself has stated that thanks to this this specific game had to be rewritten from scratch and that there were some parts he simply couldn't fit, ergo, why there are still some parts left unanswered like who the fanatic was or what happened with Diana, Sigma and Phi after this game.
Thanks for giving a better perspective surrounding this game and by extension the franchise, I'm not good at being analytical towards a writen story so when I heard about zero time dilemma's critics it kinda throws me off, not because it doesn't deserve criticism but just that I find it sad that some people will avoid it because it's the weaker one... I guess it quite a "funny" coïncidence to have this game's main message about things/life being unfair.

Unfortunately, this is probably my least favorite game in the franchise. I couldn't even bring myself to finish it, so I really appreciate Oni creating this video. I tried playing the game multiple times, but the story was so non-segmented I just couldn't get into it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Diana joins Sigma and Phi in creating the AB project but passes away at some point due to an illness. Luna's personality is modeled after her as remembrance by Sigma.
If you mean after the true ending, I would assume she would join everyone else in trying to track down the terrorist Delta mentions to them at the end.

The thing is, though, that at the end of the game you get extra files that describes what everybody from ZTD did after the end of the game, everybody save Diana, Sigma and Phi that is. Through those we can know things like that Akane and Jumpei are planning to marry each other after they catch the fanatic and that Carlos will help with the weeding plans, that Carlos's sister woke up and recovered thanks to Akane's help and then she went to the beach with her brother Carlos or how Q and Eric helped Mira escape jail so they could travel back in time and stop past Mira from ever killing.
But Team D got no files whatsoever and so we don't know what they are doing to catch the fanatic nor what they will do after.
I need a flow chart. Still good! And great job on the recapitation. Just extremely confusing. Flow chart for the entire series actually. At least everyone has a happy ending.

10 years before the events of 999, Cradle Pharmaceuticals creates an experiment wherein 9 pairs of siblings are kidnapped and forced to play The Nonary Game.
This game is run by the head of Cradle Pharmaceuticals, the man known as Ace in 999. He is a devout member of Free The Soul. His motivation for the experiment is to try to cure his Prosapagnosia, a condition where he can't distinguish faces. Due to a mixup, the siblings Aoi and Akane are put in the same group and play the game together.
At the end of the game, Akane is trapped in an incinerator where she will die unless she solves the puzzle. This traumatic stress allows her to tap into her Esper abilities. Espers are those who can jump between timelines and remember information from them.
Using her Esper abilities, she communicates with her friend Junpei 10 years in the future who is doing the same puzzle. He helps her solve it and she escapes. She now is tasked with creating the future she saw that got Junpei to that point so he can save her past self.
This brings us to 999 where Junpei is kidnapped, plays The Nonary Game and ultimately saves young Akane. After they escape, he spends the next few years searching for her.
This brings us to ZTD and all the events that unfold. Radical-6 escapes the facility and causes a near apocalypse. The human race barely survives. Shortly after the outbreak, Phi, Clover, and Alice are put in stasis for 45 years. Meanwhile, Sigma's conciousness from the end of VLR returns to his 22 year old body. Sigma, Diana, and Akane then spend the next 45 years creating the AB Project.
This brings us to VLR and all the events that unfold. After honing their Esper abilities and learning of their true mission, Phi, Sigma and Akane send their conciousness back to 2028 to join DCOM.
Back to ZTD, they prevent the outbreak of Radical-6 and Delta informs then he orchestrated this whole thing to collect Espers together and task them with stopping a terrorist who would wipe out all of humanity.

Zero being out of frame the entire time is possibly the best worst piece of writing I’ve seen in my life. 10/10 best game
I think you did quite an awesome job covering this one. Each timeline comes to an important piece of evidence that would be used by both the characters and the audience as we all work to solve the mystery together. RECAPing the coin toss in the beginning was the perfect set-up for the payoff in the end when the party shifts to that particular future, and push forward from there. Fortunately, watching all three of these RECAPs aren't necessary due to the nature of the constantly shifting timelines and each game stands on its own. :D Great job on this one, and I'll rendezvous with you on the next battlefield.

Can someone tell it to me straight, basically, all of these timelines connect into ONE timeline which is timeline one, in which ALL of them shifted to a timeline where they won the coin toss in which that timeline they all survive and remember the game that happened, but it's because of THAT game that they are determined to do good for humanity.
But if Mira goes back in time to stop herself from murdering that woman then the timeline of them being together wouldn't exist, no?

Great video. You managed to get the convoluted story into understandable chunks and are commended for it.
Few of the things that bothers me about this game are it makes the jokes between Sigma and Phi (If you are a c/d cup I'm 12 inches, used in both VLR and here) a wee bit creepy and Phi raising herself.
Also with so many anagrams used in the game, the Title is actually one. Unscrambled it's "Me? I'm Zero, I'm Delta."
The developer himself said in a interview that the title's anagram is actually unintentional

@AceAscendus I'm sorry, but I find it quite funny how you're calling people who like ZTD morons because the writing quality was not up to par neither with 999 nor VLR - at least, in your opinion. Need I remind you that Sigma's old man plot twist in VLR ( having a cybernetic eye, might I add) was not well thought out, considering no one mentions it to Sigma, nor is there any human moment where he would touch his face to realise?
@AceAscendus Fair enough about Sean's consciousness. I think the problem stems from deciding to transport to different dimensions. I will agree that SHIFTING was ridiculous. However, VLR was the first to introduce dimension hopping, ZTD merely followed suit and, admittedly, accentuated the problem. What I'm trying to get at here is that VLR was not all rosy with its plot, but people seem to lay the blame completely on ZTD.

Except apparently you actually can’t escape by guessing a coin toss, as everyone gets swapped with themselves from a timeline where they all die meaning they escape for a moment before they appear in a world where they explode seconds later having no idea what actually happened.

Could've been better if he replaced Carlos at C team or any of the characters from the Q team. That would satisfyingly balance the original characters from the first, second and last game.

@@RexZShadow Well... That was the point of all this! Technically, every Team had 2 guys that had the main connection to the each game and one guy who didn't had that connection, but became crucial to the unravelling the plot itself. That's why we have Akane-Junpei\Carlos, Phi-Sigma\Diana and Mira-Sean\Eric.
Team Q wasn't lead by Sean, but by Q (aka Delta, aka the second Zero). I know it was intended here for misdirection, but in the game, it was misdirection by omission and not misdirection by misinformation/misnomer.
Yeah they just call him 'Kid' all the way through.That's only really true during gameplay tho, Q team has a big ol' picture of Sean right there in the menu. I also wouldn't really describe it as 'misdirection' as such as that implies that our eyes were cleverly being diverted from the truth when the game just straight up hid a man off screen the whole time and the characters just never mentioned him??? Like they knew Zero was among them but nobody put it together the deaf blind wheelchair bound man in sunglasses, the only person who wasn't present the one time they met Zero in the flesh, might be more than he seemed?
@@MisterPhillby ik its been a year but they all forgot the coin toss after it happened. its hinted at in the coin toss scene that carlos is about to put it together that Q aka delta is the only one missing, but hes put to sleep and forgets
I honestly don't recall much of the intricacies but even if they didn't remember him not being there the one time they saw zero it is so silly that there being a mute deaf wheelchairbound character who is never comentated on or included in whatever crisis the characters are currently involved in who is revealed to have been the villain all along. Its like if a murder mystery show revealed the cameraman was actually the murderer, how silly of you not to consider them all along! I can buy into the time travel mechanics and robots and deadly future viruses and recreations of the titanic's sistership out in the desert but that was a step too far for me, like its just cheating to present a mystery that way lol.

Delta is actually mentioned at the beginning of the game, on the team Q voting scene, they say Q can't vote so Sean will take his place instead
Also, at the beginning of the game everyone ackowledges that they don't know who Sean is (which makes me wonder how they know his name), and whenever they refer to Q they for example mention how he wasn't even aware of what happened
For them he was a still mute and deaf person, and there are scenes in which they talk to Gab but the camera is clearly not that of one you'd use to point that they are actually talking at the dog

"Gab was there to help who? If they know Q, why didn't they recognize him in the coin toss? And why wouldn't he know what happened?"
Also, remember: They had no idea the coin toss happened till the end of the game, for them a wheelchair man was no mystery as for them they hadn't physically met with Zero
Also, a good hint of in which team Zero is to listen in which timeline the female voice appears on the speakers

Zero Escape is the DARK of videogame medium in terms of the most complex timetravel twists and turns and interweaving branches. Can't wait for it to be adapted into anime (which is already confirmed on the works, but i'm wondering how the hell they'll gonna incorporate all of these alternate timelines well, i hope the adaptation will be good).

A bad thing is going to happen in the future. Time can be reset while keeping the memories of the events that transpired. Someone from the future puts people through trials to eventually create a group of motivated heroes with the experiences of different timelines who can stop the future bad thing.
There’s 2 key timelines.
1 everyone is safe, zero technically did nothing, and they are motivated to save the world
2. Zero uses the virus to partially save the world events lead to ZE:VLR

It feels like it would be more effective if they used all this money to fund colleges.

Delta stopped it by releasing the virus which end up killing 6 billion people this saving 2 billion.
Now he created a team to work together to stop that terriost and save everyone. Not remotely sure what better doctors have to do with any of that lol.

I enjoyed this game but it did not live up to the expectations set by the second game (which I feel is the best in the series). This game is inferior to the second in story, graphics, and gameplay. Not to mention it is quite a bit shorter. Thanks for the video.

@@xNoktemAeternus2 I know it’s been 2 months but I don’t think I spotted any plot holes. Perhaps I’m just bind but the whole thing seems to fit together so elegantly. Sure it’s ridiculously perfect and crazy, but it’s fiction and fiction is allowed to do that. But I do feel I probably missed something and I do really wonder what that is.
I played the entire Zero Escape trilogy to platinum trophies and still found things in this video I missed. Well done.

I completed the Zero Escape Trilogy back-to-back recently and love how crazy it is. I need more games like this to play ❤
zero escape plotlines are more convoluted than kingdom heart's
Ok, but like... if SHIFTing works by either swapping or overriding the bodies of alternate versions of the SHIFTer, then what's the point? In the end, all of these timelines exist, right? All Delta did was make a history where his plan succeeds, but there are likely infinite timelines where he succeeds and infinite timelines where he fails, no? At least in VLR, it felt like there was more to it than simply making 1 happy timeline amongst many sad ones; Akane's plan felt like it was more about finding a solution to fix her current timeline by investigating the history behind it, hence her cultivation and use of Sigma and Phi's time-traveling ability (the convoluted nature of her plan felt necessary given the dire circumstances, and its use in the gameplay made it interesting).
In a sense, ZTD feels as lackluster as the "it was all a dream" plot twist where none of what happens feel meaningful to the audience. Like, why should I care about any of this if there are infinite good and bad timelines? The more I think of the implications, the less I care about the characters and their situation. Zero Escape is an amazing series to me, but it feels like each successive game becomes more convoluted, less meaningful, and graphically worse. I loved 999 and VLR (even if some VLR end-game reveals are pretty dumb), but ZTD is much weaker in comparison.
In 999, I valued the mystery of the nonary game, the characters were all interesting and fleshed out, and the end reveal became cooler the more I thought about it. In VLR, the AB games intertwining in timelines made for an interesting gameplay mechanic, many of the characters were still interesting (tho some were really boring like Dio and Quark), and many of the mysteries were good (tho some had poor reveals); the graphics were wonky, but I was willing to keep going cuz the story, characters, and mysteries were compelling enough. ZTD has worse graphics, the characters weren't particularly interesting or entertaining to me (in fact, some of the characters I liked felt worse than in the prequels), and the mysteries were a messy tangle of convoluted plot lines. Not only that, but the consequences of death felt more meaningful in previous games, but it was poorly used here. Furthermore, it feels as though Delta had simpler options (e.g. tell Sigma and Diana "yo, mom and pops, Phi and I need to be born and y'all're my parents, so get to bangin")
I agree with all of what you said but the last sentence probably wasn't desirable in Delta's perspective. If Diana and Sigma got together normally with no "sense of danger," then Phi and Delta wouldn't have been born with esper abilities. Then the other stuff wouldn't have happened because there's no way Delta would've set up this game, control Diana, Carlos, Q, and read their minds (also Phi wouldn't be able to SHIFT).
Of course, if the game didn't happen due to Delta not having mind hack, then mankind would've truly been in danger. Delta just liked the complex way of doing it so that C, D, and Q team could get fired up about finding the religious fanatic. He was basically doing the same thing Akane did in the first game.
To address your first sentence, I think what the writers had in mind was that the timeline where the true end of ZTD took place is a new timeline that Delta essentially created through the means of the game. The timeline where mankind is saved. In the Zero Escape universe, I'm pretty sure past, present, and the future occur simultaneously. That's why SHIFTing, time transportation, the older Akane in 999, and Phi's existence work. Despite there already being a timeline where he succeeds (I wouldn't say there are infinite where he does succeed, it is only the one we saw), he still needs to make sure what he does in the present works so the future works as well. A comparison would be Akane needing to research for the next 45 years in the timeline that essentially leads to VLR, which eventually leads to ZTD. I'm not sure if I explained what my theory is well enough, but I tried.
With all that said, yes, ZTD is still the weakest game in the trilogy, it's sad that the Japanese audience didn't give it the attention it deserved. We probably could've had a better game, possibly even more games (like how much the Danganronpa series has), or a definitive end to the story. But in this timeline, there are only 3.

This made me easier to understand the dark series about time travelling, in fact it made it kind of predictable haha, stuff like the girl being the mom and the daighter kinda off like how delta tortured her mom and dad to evolve them and to make them both.

Your effort is AMAZING, I won't deny that. Although, it kinda doesn't really work for this game. Or, at least, not in the way you explained it. I mean, it makes sense for who played the game (in my case), but from a simple listener perspective it doesn't work without a flowchart in front of he/she to follow the various parallel stuff.

Man...even though hearing it like this doesn't compare to experiencing the plot twists on your own...this game was really mind blowing for me. 999, VLR and ZTD were absolutely incredible...and I honestly want more. I just wish my controller still worked on ZTD so i could replay it since KB/M is so bad in this game @.@

So, I'm a little confused. Does the actions taken by Mira and Eric at the end, not do anything to the timeline/prevent the virus from happening? Or does it just reboot the timeline, causing the need for Akane and Junpei to just between timelines to save humanity? (I realize that humanity will still be bombed by the terrorist organization, if they do this because the second nonary game wouldn't have happened, since they would not have gathered there.)

Unrelated - would you ever consider doing the Warcraft RTS games?
It's a shame this game didn't sell so well. I haven't played 999 yet, only Virtues Last Reward. I don't know what made me purchase VLR, isn't really my kind of game but I just think I wanted more to play on my Vita. Anyway I loved it. I didn't buy this at full price and waited a few years because I had moved away from my obsession with my Vita, and didn't really wanna play it on my PS4. Anyway I did decide one day to grab it to play on my Vita. I also plan to buy he Nonary Games pack and play through 999 and VLR again on PS4. I wish 999 was available on Vita. The presentation was really good bu the framerate on Vita was awful which brought down the experience a little bit.
