There are actually 3 Stanley Cups: the original bowl, kept at the Hockey Hall of Fame, the presentation cup, and the permanent display cup in the HoF. And not all the teams from the beginning of it's existence is on the cup. Currently it's the 1965-66 season onward. They remove the other bands and put them on display at the HoF. To keep the Cup the size it is, they remove a top band when the bottom one is full and add a blank one to the bottom.

great to see alittle hocky talk, but i think you truly missed the real reasons the cup presentation is special. the main reason for me is the fact that the cup isnt given to some rich owner its given right to the players and the players are so raw and excited in that moment that you get moments that far exceed any raise of the lombardi. its like being on the ice with them and with all the traditions in taht moment like the first skate and who it gets passed to is truly special. there has never and will never be a lombardi moment as special as the sheer emotion of ray bourque or the absolute elation on ovechkin's or messier's face in those moments. its not the show or presentation, its the players

The greatest cup of all sports. I've seen it twice. Awesome. The bands that were removed from the cup are in the bank vault room in the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame. They are flattened and laid out behind glass. What a great place. The winners getting to skate with it over their head on the ice after the game is moving. So is the handshake after the series. The Edmonton Oilers former owner had his dad's name put on the cup in place of his own. The NHL had it removed, but still ... what a game. P.S. - you can touch the cup but only players who win get to lift if over their heads.

The tradition of the Stanley Cup being handled by the players came from Rugby and Soccer. It took on its own thing from those historic trophies because their names were engraved on it, they got to tour around with it, and of course - it’s the oldest professional sports trophy in North America. Top ten oldest in the world. The Grey Cup of the CFL is the second oldest in NA btw.

I think the Lombardi trophy presentation started after the NFL launched a European league over 20 years ago, and the victorious London Monarchs were presented with the trophy on the field at London’s Wembley stadium. I'm a safety professional and you can put me in the same boat as first responders, nurse, etc. who don't like it. About 90% of the time that someone has said it in my presence, something has happened. Now with Michigan, I don't watch the games, because it seems like every time I start watching they start doing bad. Great example of this, 2 years ago when Michigan beat ohio state for the first time, Michigan was up by 14 then my friend turned on the game while I was in the room and osu tied the game. I just left the house until the game was over and didn't even check the score on my phone. I haven't watched a snap since.

....but they mint a new Lombardi every year, don't they? It's no where NEAR being at the same level as the ONE Cup. And you don't have your name engraved ON the little Lombardi like you do the Cup. And don't even get me started on that trash can that the NBA gives out.....yuck.

A competitive sport, unlike basketball where the first 3 quarters mean nothing.
