  • In this video I explain you how to fix a non working Sonos Play 5 wireless Loudspeaker.
    The biggest disadvantage of the Sonos equipment is that there is no on / off button on it, as long as it is connected to the mains voltage (whether or not in standby) the power supply will always continue to function and consume energy and therefore also generate heat. Many components will die prematurely as a result, in turn this resulting in many defective Sonos equipment in the world.
    The response to this video will tell you enough.
    I personally banned all app controllable equipment from my house, I took control back into my own hands (and brain ;-)
    Parts list:
    2 pcs. capacitors Vishay type: MAL215956121E3
    1 pcs. pcb fuse T3,15 Amp 250V Littelfusse type:37213150431
    1 pcs. Bridge rectifier KBU606

    Many thanks to you for your video. I had not solved this without you. The fuse was blown and the rectifier bridge was broken. After replacing them it worked again!😊 The hardest thing was to desolder and removing silicon to bring out the components. But now it works and I’m happy.😄

    Many thanks for this video. It helped me to fix my Play:5. Rectifier was broken and as a result also the fuse. While the speaker was open, I also replaced the capacitors that were bulged. Difficult to desolder everything. It took me some hours to come to the resiult; it was definitely worth it!

    Thanks for your video. Replace the small capacitor 25V 100uF at the back of the 2 big capacitors as well

    • @henzelmen
      @henzelmen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good idea, this capacitor is for the power supply of U27803 the PWM controller, this power supply comes directly from the mains voltage via some high-ohmic resistors.
      It is also wise to check the capacitors of the power amplifiers, which are also often bulging. It is actually very wise to check all capacitors on this PCB very carefully ;-)

    Great instructions there, my Play 5 had stopped working, I replaced the x2 capacitors, 1x bridge rectifier & the fuse, as per your instruction. In my case I don't think the capacitors were blown, but I replaced them anyway been as I was that deep. My Play5 is now back up & running. Thanks for the assistance.

    Great video on disassembling the play:5! I opened mine and have the PCB on the workbench now. however my experience with repairing electronics is very little. And i have a few questions:
    - Do i change all bulging capacitors alone or do i also need to test other capacitors? how do you test them?
    - How do you test the bridge rectifier? How did you know it was faulty?
    Thanks Henzelmen!

      @henzelman hasn't replied here in a while (hope he returns as I have more questions for him also), but here's my thought on your Qs: For all the effort to get inside the Play 5 and considering the fragile nature of the wifi antenna connections, I would advise you consider replacing all of the caps. In my case, it appears that the caps in the Power Amp section are the ones that have failed (swollen tops). The Pwr Sup caps are flat on top, but my Sonos is old, and caps in this line of work all fail eventually. And FWIW, I'm going to rig some sort of an "ON-OFF" switch - perhaps in the power cord. I travel a lot, and my Sonos may sit idle for months sometimes.

      @henzelmen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi Jeffrey, sorry to hear it didn't work out for you. I do have two Sonos speakers with unrepairable pcb damage, my idea was to pull all the electronic out and find a three-way crossover filter and built it into the Sonos, so I have two passive speakers and use them left and right near my tv.
      You can also try to find a Chinese power supply with 24V and 12V and built it in the Sonos as a replacement powersupply. This will work verry well according to some people on the internet discussig this problem.
      Good luck!

    Fantastic video!
    What about bypassing the wifi components altogether? Since Sonos has offered trade ins for these old units, there will be a lot of old Play 5's with perfectly good hardware taking up waste. I would like to know if there is a way we can still get use out of a bricked Play5? Maybe bypass the wifi components so we can use the line-in jack to play music from a phone?

    • @henzelmen
      @henzelmen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good plan! But I just don't think Sonos will sell the trade ins, really have no idea what they do with them, of course they are more eager to sell new ones to us.
      But...If you succeed to get your hands on them you can indeed have for lot of fun. Built your own wifi reiceiver in or bluetooth adapter.
      These things are very cheap on the internet. connect them to the line- input and you have a realy good wireless speaker for cheap money.
      Wish you good luck with it!

      Hi @@galaxyb1103 , that's hard to tell because there is no service manual available. You need it to find the right input and output tracks on the printed circuit boards, now it's sort of guessing what is wat. If your not afraid of electronics you can try to touch the components near the power amp with your finger, if you hear a little hum from the speaker your close to the input. Be carefull to keep your fingers away from the power supply on the other side of the pcb!!!!

    Great Video and instructions. I am replacing the parts per you list. All parts on the PCB are covered with silicone . Should I cover the
    new parts also. Wondering why they did that as part of their manufacturing process.

    • @henzelmen
      @henzelmen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael, they do that to prevent the components came lose because of vibrating from the speakers. When the speaker playes loud the internal can be very shaky.
      If you have some glue or silicone it is wise to glue the parts to the pcb again.

      What is the diagnosis of your sonos?

      Does it not work at all, no lights at all? Then check the fuse on the back of the pcb, the little round brown/red component you can see in my video. If its broken than you have most likely also bad cap's and have to follow my instructions in the video to replace them.

      @willmsyd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@henzelmen yes a little bit, diagnoses is no lights no sound not working at all (the power cord is good i measured it) I checked the fuse it also is working aswell as the two larger capacitors that you replaced they are working. Makes me think potentially it is the transformer?

    • @henzelmen
      @henzelmen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sorry for my late responce. Try measure the voltage on the two large capacitors but watch out.... there is high voltage inside. If there is voltage on the capacitors then the problem is the power supply sucundairy from the transformer. Measure the capacitors for voltage on the secundair side, if there is no voltage on them, then most likely the switching transistor (or mosfet) has gone.

    My Play 5 stopped working a few days ago, and I have found your video :) It looks promising, and I can easily see that heat is a likely culprit. I never knew Sonos allowed the pwr supply to run full time - that's not a good design idea!! Anyway - I hoped I could get an indication that my speaker's symptoms might match with a power supply failure. No one else here has reported the exact symptoms I see. The symptoms I see are as follows: The failed speaker was paired with another Play 5. A few days ago the speaker went silent except for an odd, low volume sound like a burp at a regular interval - every 5-8 seconds. The light on top flashes on and off at a slow rate. I've tried the "factory reset", but as soon as the speaker is plugged back in, it just resumes the slow, repetitive "burping" & flashing light.
    Does that sound like the power supply?
    Thanks!

    • @henzelmen
      @henzelmen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This sounds like a power supply issue but not the one I describe.
      Your power supply try's to switch on but due to an internal overload somewhere it is switches off again. This is non stop repeating. Most likely you wil find a bad capacitor somwhere on the pcb, look for the swollen top on it.
      Good luck!

      @@henzelmen Yes - I found the swollen-top caps, but they are in the 'Power Amp' section of the PCB. The puffed-up tops were immediately visible. The caps in the HVPS are perfectly flat, but I'll replace them anyway. From what I can see now (the PCB is still attached inside the housing), the most difficult part of this repair will be removing all of the "silicon goop" that is slathered on heavily & between all of the caps... any suggestions?? Another question: There are 5 caps in a row, and right next to them is a row of 6 cylindircal components... Do you know what these are? I can't see any part numbers or markings on them yet.

      Hi Marc, a humming or buzzing sound with an interval indicates that the power supply is trying to start up, but this is not possible due to a problem in the power supply circuit.
      You are probably also dealing with so-called "badcaps".

What I do also consider is that the play5 smells for electriicity. If you know what I mean ? Also, it's not possible for me to see the fuse. Where to search for the fuse ? Is it diffiicult to take out the print plate so I can see the components more in detail ?

      @henzelmen  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Marc, If you follow my intructions you can take the printed circuit bord out, the fuse is on the rear of the pcb but if the fuse is broken the Sonos wil do absolutely nothing! So I think your fuse is fine because you hear a humming sound. I strongly belive you have to examen the power supply but you have to have some electronic experience. Be carefull for the high voltage inside (+300Volt) wich remain for a long time after unplugging the powercord!

    • @henzelmen

      That is the bridge rectifier, which turns AC voltage into DC voltage. There is a small chance that it is broken due to the defect capacitors. They are very cheap so replacing is the best option.

    My Sonon Gen 1 Play 5 is making more a high pitched sound when plugged in. Will these instructions and parts resolve this problem? How do I when Sonos triggered a “recycle” mode? What does that do to speaker, functionally? Blow some parts or ? Thank you for any help you can provide. I am very disappointed that my 6 year old expensive Sonos speaker is useless.

    • @henzelmen
      @henzelmen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Alaine, as far as I know the "recycle mode" is no longer available in the sonos app, in 2020 the function was silently removed by Sonos but as always in the software world: nothing is for long and nothing is clear!
      When activating the Recycle mode on a Sonos it wil work for another 21 days and then shuts down with no chance to reverse this action.
      To me it is a frightening idea that my personal belongings can be entered and destroyed by the maker whenever they wish and for whatever reason. Slowly we are losing the control over our private world.
      As for your problem with the Sonos, it will not go away with the instructions in this video. This is more of a problem in the digital processor circuit or in the power amplifier. Please check for the capacitors on the power amplifier, they tend to go bad caused by heat and undersizing (like the ones in the power circuit in this video). You can recognize them by a swollen top.
      The biggest disadvantage of the Sonos equipment is that there is no on / off button on it, as long as it is connected to the mains voltage (whether or not in standby) the power supply will always continue to function and consume energy, therefore also generate heat. Many components will die prematurely as a result, this in turn resulting in many defective Sonos equipment in the world.
      The response to this video will tell you enough.
      I personally banned all app controllable equipment from my house, I took control back into my own hands (and brain).
      Good luck.

      Hi Alex,
      You need a needle nose pliers to get the glue off, Just pry and pry until it comes loose bit by bit.
      I always remove the capacitors by turning them around, grab them firmly with the same pointed pliers and turn them around until they come loose, this works better then endless heating with a soldering iron.
      When they are loose, two pieces of wire remain on the PCB, you can now easily solder them out one by one. After this, only empty the print hole with a desoldering pump.
      Good luck with it!

    Thanks for an excellent tutorial... My Sonos has no light, no action. This kind of disappeared slowly, over a few days and then it was lights out.
    The fuse is healthy and the large caps look fine.
    I opened and measured the voltages. On the large capacitors, I measure 325V or so, which seems fine. On the secondary 1000uF/25V, I measure 10V, on the 820uF/35V, I measure 24V... These two are very slightly swollen compared to the other ones around... (I ordered replacements).
    Any idea, might be causing this malfunction?

      You have done a good job by measuring the voltages, Primair and secundair, it tells me you have experience with electronics and this will make it easier to talk to each other.
      The 10 Volts you measured supposed to be 12 Volt and there lies the problem to my opinion, because the 24 Volt is oké you should suspect the capacitors of the 12 Volt supply. You can try to inject an external 12 Volt from a bench suply to see if the Sonos starts up again, just solder two wires direct on the 12 Volt capacitors but watch the polarity please.
      I hope this was helpfull to you. Let me know if it worked out, I learn from it to!
