Adding Aux - Fixing Sonos Play:1's Biggest Flaw

  • Why oh why, Sonos, why did you make such wonderful speakers and leave out the most basic functionality. To save these from going into the landfill, I took it upon myself to do a little research and make this video showing the process for adding auxiliary input to these speakers.
    *NOTE*
This mod as I have shown it only enables the mid-driver. If you want to have the functionality of tweeter, you will need to add an additional low/high pass filter due to the intricacies of how this system was made. Below I will provide a link to the guide that helped me to make this video as well as go more in-depth on how and why each modification was done, including the use of a filter to enable the tweeter. Having just the mid-driver does provide adequate sound, however, which is just fine for the purpose this will serve.

Needs a good close still image of where the connection point is for the aux. Also note this only makes use of the full range speaker and does not use the tweeter. See videos on adding bluetooth for those connection points an how to use both speakers.

which particular videos are you referring to. all the sonos BT videos that i can find are about how to use the AUX port, which this device does not have.

Want to know one of the biggest annoyance is for people who are blind or visually impaired? A video like this with no narration.

It’s just that music is one of the very few activities that blind and visually impaired people like me can fully participate in. from what I can tell this video has a lot of good information that I would love to be able to get access to and use in my music

I have a really nice old receiver that the control circuit failed on. This video is encouraging me to see if I can bypass that and go directly to the amplifier. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Well done!
I've left the lan and exit from the bottom near the power line.
Be sure, doing this hack, to exit also with a line out from the woofer so you can add any active sub with speaker line in.

Kinda sad that Sonos didn't do that natively. Who makes speakers that don't have an aux output??? Ugh. Cool to see it was possible but unfortunately most of us don't have the know how to do what you just did. Congrats to you though. It worked!

I like how the important part is left out. Red wire just appears out of nowhere! Then cam pans away. Thanks

If you enjoy it so much then I shall attempt to brighten your day...
This video was so well explained, I really appreciate that he took the time to show us exactly where to solder the first wire! If he hadn't zoomed in and showed us the exact spot then this video might be confusing to a lot of people... which it definitely isn't. That was really thoughtful of him and I am definitely going to do this right now. I am also going to drill a few more holes in the circuit board and spray it all bright purple, because the voices in my head said it would triple the sound quality!!
Peace from Ireland to you all (that bits genuine).

awesome! This is golden! Exactly what I have been looking for. I have two great sounding Symfonisk speakers, and I want to use them as fronts to my TV, in a surround setup they can only act as rears, how silly is that..
But some more closeups would be great, how to identify where exactly to connect the wires?
Edit I just read above comment, about the tweeters.. thats a shame...

and the sound of the sound is like this, change it normally, but I can 3 speakers, if I can’t reset the sound, and I think it’s possible to just sound the active speakers without bells and whistles, but the input opir does not set the frequencies and what kind of sound?

Are the screws inside the grill and near the tape, the same size as the ones on the base? It seems that the same tool.does not fit the inside ones

hes just wired it directly to the input area of the amplifier so if you have both sources playing it will play together as one output i assume

Totally a Butcher job getting an Power amp module from Amanzon and eliminate all Just use the existing power supply and the speaker.
Or better install a 4066 and use some logic to switch Sonos to Aux input or a bluetooth module mentioned below.
