I bought a used Play 5 Gen 1 off Ebay last year (2023) and was expecting to do exactly this - hook it up to bluetooth with a 3.5mm adapter. But I found after resetting and connecting to my router through Ethernet cable, the Older App worked great and I could add my Apple Music to it - believe me, this is one of the very best speakers I have listened to music through. Unbelievable sound. And I have Bose Soundtouch 300 and 2 Aiwa Exos 9s and several Sony MHC-V77s and V70s/50s - I don't know what Voodoo Black Magic these guys at Sonos did, but my God what a sound! Just get it even if you have to use a Bluetooth adapter with 3.5mm cable input!
Just upgraded my Gen 1 Sonos 5 speaker as suggested for £12. The only thing I had to do was disconnect the power from the Sonos Hub then hold both Mute and + buttons down for 10 seconds then release and wait for light to stop flashing orange. It took 5 mins before it connected. Don’t reconnect Sonos or you have to repeat process. I listen to my record collection as before the upgrade to Sonos 2. And all thanks to this video ❤
Hello Doug. I have a projector in the TV room I currently send audio to a BT speaker via a transmitter directly to the speaker. I have a pair of SONOS play 5's, which do not have BT. Is it possible to send the audio signal through the BT transmitter is in the projector and in the sonos play this with the BT receiver you show in the video or you know some ting something better? Thanks for the help.

Will this diminish the audio output greatly? IDK what bitrate the regular wifi streaming is at but I feel that the blueooth + aux will diminish the quality
Only if you are an audiophile and know all the amazing descriptive words for why the sound falls short. One should "pop up" at any moment to let us all know. Perhaps it a bit forward in the midrange overall? Not sure, just guessing.
My Sonos will do nothing without wifi and a music service or a assistant. Also the sound is muddled across the spectrum. I use it for Alexa only. Its great for that.

Sadly, no line-in for my sonos speaker
The only works with the Play 5 and the sound bar and base. The Play 1 and 3 do not have AUX jacks.

I think only the Play:5 (gen2)
, Play:5 (gen1) can do this without connect, connect amp, amp or port
