NBA Greatest Duos: Charles Barkley & Scottie Pippen vs LA Lakers (1999 WCR1 Game 3)

  • Although the basketball relationship between Pippen and Barkley didn't last to long and ended in pretty ugly fashion, this two stars had some really great games.
One of them, and probably the best, is Game 3 of the 1999 Western Confernce First Round series against the Lakers with Shaq in his prime and Kobe as his sidekick. Lakers won both games at home and Rockets looked to avoid the sweep -- Pippen and Chuck took care of buisness...
Scottie scored 37 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and played the entire game. Barkley scored 30 points and grabbed 23 rebounds (8 on the offensive end) against 27 year old Shaq. Unreal game by this great duo.

Kobe himself was NOT a superstar in 99. He was arguably at that level in 2000, but you could still make a case against it. I think he was clearly a superstar caliber player by 2000/01. Prime Pippen and Prime Kobe never crossed paths. It was Old Pippen and Too Young Kobe.

But I see a number of what I think are Rockets fans here. I am a Laker fan, I was around back then. I remember after Scott fumbled the ball in the final secs of Game 1 at The LA Forum with HOU up one causing LA to take the lead and eventually win on a great block by Shaq on Cat Mobley. Houston Chronicle iirc called Pippen "Ham Hands". There was disappointment that he flubbed a winnable game after all the hype surrounding his acquisition. After the series, I recall Pip saying, "I'm sorry I came here to play with his (Charles') sorry fat butt."

At least Kobe was improving and an All NBA player. Pippen was 33 years old, with a basically broken back and bum knees. I’d take a young player entering his prime, over an old man coming off a career altering injury he needed surgery for.

Pippen's stats wouldn't look good as it had to be shared between three superstars, at least. But how many can perform like like this at 34 year old, in a new team, with serious back injuries? If MJ joined them, he or any of the other two might quit halfway. Huston had the chance that year, but Olajuwon and Barkley were unexpectedly worn out.

That Rice for Campbell/Jones trade and the dumping of Van Exel (and the firing of Harris after 12 gms) killed that 1999 Lakers team. Jones and Van Exel were all stars the year before. The way they lost to Utah in the 98 Conf Finals propelled West to have to dump NVE as addition by subtraction. He got into his final spat with Del Harris on camera during a playoff game and that was the final straw for Nickey V. Jerry Logo West only got Ty Lue and Tony Battie (traded later for Travis Knight) for Van Exel. That's how bad Nick's reputation was at that point. He got his act right after the trade, but I don't think he could handle Los Angeles. So now you've got ancient Derek Harper either starting or backing up Derek Fisher and you've got a mediocre tweener (JR Reid) playing PF over Horry (a natural 3). You see Reid trying to stop Barkley and laugh. That was numerous times WORSE against Duncan and Robinson. Timmy naturally killed him.
Lakers barely found a niche for Rice as a 3rd option when Phil took over, but not on the fly in the 50 gm 99 season. He went from 25 ppg as a 1A option in Charlotte to a number 3 option overnight. Glen Rice is another version of Allan Houston. They may be two of the greatest pure shooters ever, but if you're depending on them as star players, you're gonna be disappointed unless your team is set up to get them open looks and screens (a la Indiana; and Miller was a great runner -- Rice wasn't). Had Rodman not been an addicted nutjob, he would've been playing Reid's role against Duncan, Chuck, Karl, Rasheed, etc. He was done after 98 tho, mentally. He still actually DID have a year or two left in him. He wasn't that far removed from the 98 Bulls title team, remember. He wasted that opportunity tho. He was crying like a suicide case at the press conf announcing his SIGNING, haha. That was a bad omen.

I think if Barkley had taken better care of himself, he could've remained effective longer. He just didn't have any lift at that point. If he were 20 pounds lighter, I think he would've still been a big force to deal with. Not only was Pippen 34 but he had come off some long playoff runs and that wears on you.

      B. Entringer The Houston Rockets had a good 1996/97 season with Hakeem Olajuwon the best center in the NBA. He had like 30pts & 10reb against the Jazz in the WCF. The 1997/98 season was not good because Clyde, Chuck and the Dream all suffered a lot of injuries. Don't forget that this "old team" lost only 3-2 against the Utah Jazz ! Without injuries, it could be a different story...

With Barkley the Rockets could dominate Seattle. But with Horry and Cassel the Rockets could dominate Utah. Pick your poison. If I were the Rockets GM at the time I would have attempted to get Otis Thorpe back for the 95-96 season. He was still being traded around the league and could have been had for a lot less than Barkley. We gave up too much for Barkley. Thorpe was Hakeem's best right hand man and criminally underrated.

Sonics 12-0 them for 3 staight seasons. 1994, 1995, 1996. Sonics got Houston's number. While they tried to add players to compete for the Sonics line up, they sacrificed everything else.
Houston's line up of Olajuwon, Maxwell, Horry, Thorpe, Cassell, Kenny Smith was the perfect line up to beat everyone in the NBA except the Sonics. While the Sonics got their numbers. Houston got the Bulls number. Ironic to think if only Houston had beaten the Sonics in 1993 and 1996 playoffs. Houston vs Bulls could have happened. And Houston could have tainted MJ's flawless finals record

Kobe/Shaq (HoF'ers) & G.Rice (All-Star) couldn't beat 3 old superstars, ALL past their prime. not to mention how the refs RAPED the Kings, so the Lakers could win, 25+ FT's in the 2nd half alone!!! It's laughable when assholes try to mention Kobe/Shaq = or > MJ/Pip. You NEVER saw the refs have to rig ANY series so the Bulls'd win, b/c they had lock down defense. & MJ/Pip beat Pistons, & Pistons had 3 HoF'ers - Zeke, Dumars, & Worm, w/ nothing more than role players, b/c H.Grant didn't make an All-Star game until MJ retired.
