My favorite part about this is how it captures the feeling of isolation in the real world. It's not just saying "phone bad", it's also showing the other side of that coin. Part of the reason that endlessly scrolling on our phones feels so appealing is because the physical world has become isolating, we don't have communities or third spaces anymore. I know the exact feeling of breaking away from your screens, looking out your window and realizing the world around you has been turned into an isolating mechanical husk only accessible by car and requiring money at every turn. Loitering laws keep us from being allowed to just exist in public. And so you go back to scrolling, because at least in the digital world we still have communication with others...

Exactly,i am just 17, I won't know how it works for the money part, but mainly i hardly see a point to communicate outside the world, because there's no one, there are people, i have friends but they too immersed and consumed in internet, i look down my window and crave to go downstairs n have that experiences like in the past but i sigh knowing I can't acknowledge anybody for the same, sad enough no one is there to accompany me , and the top of it is i have social anxiety and this leaded to the extent that i have anxiety with my most friends too. Thus i go up to my mom's phone and scroll it like a dead person. Recently got my own personal phone and i am excited for the vulnerability that i won't just feel isolated

    • @TheHadMatters
      @TheHadMatters 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +151

      1) Money isn't as much of a prohibitive issue as you make it out to be. There are tons of cheap hobby clubs you could try, most things that cost money have affordable trial version, and if you find one or two things you want to do every week, you can probably find a way to fund it for yourself. My girlfriend has made hardly any money for like a decade and she still constantly goes to the cinema, sports clubs, into nature, free classes, etc. etc. You just have to let go of the need for everything you do to "amount to something, and you'll find that when you live life in the moment like that, you end up being crazily and productive in the long run anyway. Because staying active gives you more energy to do and enjoy more productive things overall.
      2) Loneliness isn't as difficult to overcome as you present it. Most of the time when we feel isolated it's because we keep chasing "deep" friendships or validating dates, hookups, or romantic relationships. But those things obviously can't be forced, so if you don't have them and you're suffering from loneliness, you need to go into it with much more basic expectations to move forward. Meet people who need help with projects. Offer volunteer work or social coaching.
2.1.) Go on dates, but view them as fun ways to spend the evening instead of being disappointed every time you haven't found your soulmate or someone who wants to be naked with you. Crucially, learn to accept rejection by realising that most of the people who turn you down are probably interested in spending their time in ways that you wouldn't enjoy either. Or their personality just doesn't actually match yours as much as you're telling yourself. That's very often why the chemistry is off for them, and you're just not realising it because you just desperately finally want "a good catch" to show off.

This is outstanding. Really captures what it’s like to be lonely and turn to your phone for a distraction, just to find yourself caught in the endless stream of content on it that demands your attention. You especially nailed that feeling of being unable to break away no matter how toxic and self-destructive it feels when you keep scrolling, trapped in an overwhelming but addictive habit you resent. That was what resonated with me most. Awesome work!

I already knew that doomscrolling was bad, however beyond that simple message there was something in the feel of this animation, in the style, the colors, the music choice, how the character looks out of the window, and the clicking sound after it went black... There was something that resonated with me on a deeper level. This weird comfort I only felt when I stayed up until 4, and I just sat on the floor, stared at a specific point at the wall and listened to Jack Stauber for the first time. I know that this is very specific, and that's the point. There is something very specific about this animation that I find almost uncomfortably comforting and melancholically beautiful. I used to feel like this for the past 5 years.
For me, what really got my happiness and joy back in my life was just to do things - to cook myself a nice stew or curry to enjoy for the week and share with friends, to clean my place properly, to get back a sense of pride in doing those "menial" tasks that matter a lot. People say that they "do" a lot of things like "doing research" but, are you actually doing any research... or simply watching someone else's? I found out that I was just watching someone else doing what I wanted to do.
It doesn't matter nearly as much if no one other than yourself is there to enjoy that with you, or if you get famous, or whether or not you document it. Yes, I'm in debt, yes, my job sucks sometimes, yes, I live in a city far away from nature and I felt like a zombie for the longest time.
But at the end of the day, the little things saved me. Slow-roasting my tomatoes with grilled spices, the joy of thinking "OMG - I only spent 40 dollars for this and I'll be able to feed myself for several days and perhaps and bring joy to my friends! That's incredible!" - embracing the beauty that comes with having very little money instead of being miserable.
Yes it's hard, but if I do the right things, I'm happy. And it will get better, because I do the right things, and because I'm happy.
Happiness won't happen on the other side of whatever else other than the prison we make for ourselves.
I spent 2 months starving, everyday, hard. I thought I was a worthless loser. I believed all those voices in my phone, but the voices in your phone don't know the slightest bit of the beginning of your story.
It may be cliché, but it's fcking true.
Take it one step at a time.

The message of the Bible is that no matter how evil you think you are, no matter how far you feel you are from God, you can get right with God. You can go to heaven.
All you have to do is put your full trust in Jesus. The message of the Bible is that Jesus was punished for all the evil things you have done or will ever do. He loved you so much that he was willing to die a horrible, brutal death for what you did. He was punished for your actions. If you believe in him and trust him you will have eternal life with God. You will not go to hell because Jesus already went for you.
All you have to do is trust in Jesus. Nothing else. You don't have to go to church. You don't have to give money to people. You don't have to do anything but believe in what Jesus did. That he sacrificed himself for you so that you could go to heaven.

This made me cry a bit. I’d just been scrolling on youtube and found your video. No matter how many times I try to distance myself from short-form content, I always come back. It’s a huge part of everyday life. I’m forced to use the internet for school and I’ll be forced to use it for work. It’s so distracting and endless and it hurts.
I’m afraid we’ll all get some new kind of dementia in our older years because of this. There are no studies, none at all, of what this app design does to your brain with years of scrolling. I really am so scared. But I get so lethargic when I scroll and I just can’t get out. It’s this constant feeling of muffled emotional distress and paralysis.
Even after watching this, I feel like I should get off TH-cam and do something else, but there’s this curiosity itching in the back of my brain like “what if there’s more to see?” I have to work really hard to unpack that and realize what it actually means. I need to ask myself, why? Why do you need to check the homepage again? Why is it so important? You’ve done it a million times and it’s never made you happy.
I hope that someday, phones won’t be so necessary for functioning in society, and we can maybe pass laws restricting companies’ use of manipulative content.
Also, is that music from Machinarium?

I understand you. Social media are the cigarettes of the 21st century.
I don't know if you watched it but I recommend you the netflix documentary the social dilemma. There (and of course on other sources like internet or youtube (i know it sounds contradictory)) you can get to know how it affects you and that it's not all your fault: these systems were created to be addictive.
I think the best solution would be getting informed about it, what you can do to leave it (hobbies, be outside, get focus on your work, eventually get rid of social media (or use it healthily) and most importanly control it, because that's our problem: It controls you.
Of course this should happen gradually, you won't be using all these apps from one day to another, but gradually I think you can do it.
And lastly, I don't think we must hate the internet and live in the middle of the forest with no communication. As everything in life I believe balance is the way to go, and if we use social media and the internet in a balanced way (like not being the hole day there) and in a productive way (like learning instead of consuming cheap entertainment), we can get benefit from it.
pd: i still think yt is the best social media available

I spend so many hours just mindlessly scrolling through the internet that I started to feel more and more isolated from other world as much as from my own feelings and my own life. Hey pal. I’m sorry you’ve had some tough years - it can be hard to cope with big changes, particularly if we don’t have support systems around us.
Do you live somewhere that you can reach out to someone to talk (therapy via health insurance, school/work scheme or charity) to? (Or even online therapy if not?)
If you can’t do that but want to make some changes to start feeling better, I highly recommend having a period of “toddlering yourself”. 😅 Basically treat yourself as you would a toddler you’d been tasked to care for: eating good things (even if it’s just having an apple alongside your toast!), getting outside for fresh air and movement, sleep, positive activities (nothing too harrowing for films/music, crafts or reading, cooking or baking, gardening). Basically, a mindset of caring for yourself gently and purposefully for a week or so - then review how you feel.
I found this hard, but even adding in a shower/bath and getting outside (face in sunshine) can make a big difference and give you enough energy to care in other ways.
But - therapy would be most helpful as sometimes we need a helping hand to pull us out of the pit. Good luck - you deserve peace and happiness.

But this video tells us that the gentle breeze from looking out the window may have more meaning than you'd think. This one brought tears to my eyes. Before I even watched the video it hit me and I agreed. Ive been doing an immense amount of research on human neurobiology through huberman lab podcast episodes. The more videos I watch, the more I get this feeling affirmed that the human mind and biology is completely adapted to a natural human lifestyle that our deep ancestors had. Eating mostly plants, meat sometimes, not eating so much. We have glands in our eyes that detect light and set our entire internal clock, and throwing that clock off with artificial light can induce clinicial depression in a lot of people. There are so many different fundemental ways that modern life fucks with our biology in very negative ways. Even our brains are fucked. We are supposed to be outside having fun in nature and hanging out with each other. Instead we are in boxes staring at screens ti escape the pain dreading the next shift. This video snapped me right out of that hypnotic state momentarily.
Im probably never going to actually do it, but I get this constant urge to just drop everything and live in the forest. Its not rational, but I think its an emotional thought and the cause of me feeling that way is valid.

@@lakshyacuts huberman podcast episodes are usually 1 to 3 hours long and ive seen over 2 dozen of them, each covering like a whole semester of information in an easy to understand way for the general public.
Ive mainly looked into emotions, addiction, focus, motivation and willpower. But ive also looked into sleep and nutrition.
I learned that there are trillions of microbiota in the gut, and that biome directly effects our health to the point it effects our brains resources and emotions, and that modern processed foods have had strange not fully understood effects on the gut. Ive learned a lot about nueroplasticity and how the brain changes, and how what you focus on changes your mind.
Ive listen to andrew(he is one of the top neuroscientists in the world) talk to some of the best psychiatrists in the world. Those who are extremely successful and dont always use orthodox methods.
Id say that the most messed up things modern humans do to betray our biology is getting unnatural light at unnatural times. Your eyes can sense the direction light comes from to tell your body what time of day it is. If your internal clock is thrown off, studies have shown it induces clinical depression a lot of the time, and lowers your brain function.
To counteract this, make sure yu are getting 6 to 8 hours of sleep in complete or near darkness, the darkness will set your melatonin and then when the sun comes up go outside for 5 mins.
Do this for sunrise and sunset and after a few days you will feel much more energised and a bit smarter, and happier. You will also automatically go to sleep at the right time.
And then theres nutrition. Our ancestors had a successful hunt 1 in 30 times. So they ate mostly plants nuts and fruit. Our gut microbiome isnt built for that much meat. More than like 6 meatballs a week and the meat eating microbiota will start to eat the lining of your stomach, causing inflammation and other diseases.
So, eat food. Not too much (like 1 or 2 meals a day with snacks) mostly plants and maybe a steak dinner once a week or every other week. Not saying its wrong to eat tons of meat if thats your preference, im just telling you what I learned to be the most optimal way to get nutrition from what I learned through neurobiology.

But I feel something Inside that tells me to go on and hustle, to change my life and help the people who need help. Maybe I am just dreaming, and I will die lonely and depressed, maybe I will even do it myself, but that one warm feeling inside makes me stand up every time I feel like complete shit on the bottom of the fucking floor.
Please, if you relate, don’t give up, I know it doesn’t mean much but I believe in you, work on loving yourselves and those who deserved to be loved

Your heart is beating because God of the universe has a purpose for you my man. He loves you more then anything in the world, and more then anything in heaven. God loves you so much that He sent Himself to die so you don’t have to, Jesus was separated from God so you can be connected to God. Their is no good in the world, their is only good in God, and people who choose to accept and run after God. Jesus is very real, and He died, and was buried, and Rose again, and unless any man be born again (born of the water and spirit, just like a baby, when a baby is born they are born from water, then they breath in air), He shall never be with God. But those that believe in God and in His son Jesus shall never taste death, indeed the water He shall give them shall become a spring of water welling up to eternal life. Jesus Loves you so much, and God has had so much grace and compassion for you, their is only hope in God, hope without God is no hope at all, and life without God is no life at all. Thats why Jesus came, so that anyone who believes in Him shall be connected once again to God and experince the life God wanted wach and every one if us to have, a life where we are Gods, and He is ours. My boast is in the Lord, and the the cross, if i raise up any other name then the name of Jesus, or preach any other gospel then the gospel of Christ, may I be accursed.
God loves you, me, and those that kill Him more then anything. I love you too man. I hope this message finds you and you learned something today. Peace! ✝️

The sad thing is that entertainment media used to coexist healthily in real life. Back when people had DVD’s, it was a pro-social activity, encouraging people to loan out their favorite movies or bring it somewhere to watch with friends. Gaming used to mean sharing a couch and snacks together. And before theaters and malls became prohibitively expensive, they were great places to hang out. I hate what this world has become.

I feel like the main problem is the fact that everyone goes on their phone every day and its so normalized now. I'm not saying phones in general are bad, because they connect us to our friends and everything, but it can also cause social isolation. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it. Phones kind of consume your attention, change your attitude, and tempt you to mindlessly scroll because your in person life is too boring.

Then after a few minutes, everything would go back to normal, I could breathe well, especially when connecting to nature-me gardening at home, doing some real stuff that makes my day productive. In short I think we should not be drowned in social media that most of the time these days bring unworthy news and information infecting our minds. Mental health is really important, get up and do some meaningful things that'll help you with your personal development.

God has put us here on this earth for a True Purpose.
Jesus has come, to save sinners: He Loves us too greatly, He was willing to be mocked, scorned, bled on the cross, yet even having the power to save Himself, He did not because of the will God had for Jesus, and that was to save us. Through Him, when we believe, Jesus trades His perfect, eternal, sinless Life with our sinful, mortal life, and therefore our sin is put upon Him, and Christ took upon the wrath of God we deserved. He is the true Lord and Saviour, with His death and ressurection done once and for all.
Does this give us an excuse to sin? Absolutely not. How can we, who are dead to sin after Jesus died for our sins, continue in sin deliberately? God does forgive us and cleanses us, restores us and makes us new when we repent.
Is this unfair judgement? God is not unjust, He is Fair, and Righteous. But because God knows that no one is perfect, and that everyone has sinned, His sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for us, so that we may inherit eternal Life, and be made blameless.
Jesus Saves, and Loves you all.

    Random thought but
I recognized the skyscraper sounds immediately: flalout 4. Mad respect for you using those.
I struggle with this animation, because i feel like our lives are so mundane and bland. I see all of these video games showing fantastical, impossible worlds that are so beautiful and i can only hope to exist/live in them sometimes. Then i turn it off, and I'm left in the real world. My life right now has been me working my butt off to make money, to make my college grades, and finally(as of recent) graduate college. It just feels so off knowing that i wanted to explore this world in my own way, in a different time or place...somrtimes alone, sometimes with a person, or group. I just feel like life right now is just hard to face because i have to live with the fact that my expectations are completely unreal.
I always get worried I'll sound delusional daying stuff like this. I don't video game as much as i talk about, but I'm one of those people who daydream and build worlds in my mind and i always look back at this one and just feel unhappy. So much unhappiness in the world, so many messed up things i can't change, and all the life in what we have kind of drains out.
The worlds gotten more exciting for me these past few years however and i think maybe my dullness was found in surfing the web. I think its time i get out more and explore stuff on my own.

The thing about scrolling is that it isolates you, you feel like there’s so much happening in the world and you not part of it, you are just the watcher while others are living. Ever been left behind while your friends went on a school trip/camp? You felt sad, alone and couldn’t wait for them to return, that’s how scrolling feels like but worse because it feel like you have to go to the school trip and join your friends instead of waiting for them to return but instead you know you can’t just do that. Sm is beneficial for the owners and content creators. We know people we aren’t even supposed to know, we are told what to think and how to think. Unfortunately the human brain wasn’t created for this.

Just turned 25 and I can’t take it anymore. It’s so bad for us. I’ve reached the point where I’ve uninstalled all social media from my phone (only on my tablet now- with screentime restrictions). Some days I even set my screen display to grayscale mode. A bit extreme, yeah, but it seriously kills any desire to stare at my device. Trying to find my way back to reading books, drawing, fitness, going outside, etc.
Thank you so much for making this animation. The internet needs more insightful content like this 🫶🏻

Hey if you want to do new things you could try reading atomic habits, tldr for the tasks you mentioned would be; read 1 page; have your sketchbook open on your desk with a pencil; have your exercise mat in a very visible or even annoying place, lay it out and do some stretches; get ready to go outside and just step out of your house.
I can't promise this would work for you but its currently helping me

I hope it works out for you mate. Even I'm facing the same struggle. Addicted to scrolling. I've uninstalled all social media apps but can't uninstall youtube hence waste tons and tons of time here on these youtube shorts. I've too put a lot of restrictions on my phone but still end up doing the same thing. They should give an option to disable YT Shorts. Or even uninstall TH-cam. But then I'm worried I'll come here from chrome. I guess self-control is the only way this will be possible to do. Because of these things everyday I end up fucking up my schedule. And study less than I'm supposed to. I sleep less. I skip some important things sometimes like studying or workout. I feel so exhausted after these scrolling sessions and sometimes grumpy or headaches and those guilt trips. I don't know what to do anymore.

This reminds me, earlier today I went to the hospital to visit my younger brother, and sitting there, I saw both him and our mom on their phones endlessly scrolling. I was the only one sitting there with my phone in the pocket and it felt isolating. Here I am in a room with family members and they don’t want to really be social physically, they just rather scroll endlessly while occasionally being like, “look at this video”
