    In this video I show how to make a custom wood plank wall out of regular 2 by 4 lumber and three different kinds of stain. ( I used Minwax Classic Grey, Dark Walnut, and Golden Oak) I ripped each 2 by 4 into four different strips and then stained them. I let them dry over night and then attached them to the wall using 1 inch brad nails.
    Materials-
    10- 2 by 4 ($18)
    3 different stains- ($17.50)
    (bought at Menards with 11% off sale)

    Wow you can tell the difference in the acoustics of the room from before wood and after. Before wood the echo was so noticable. Thanks for motivation to save money and put in the effort to do this in my home. More beautiful than any other premade market wood panels I could find.

      @@chaddiy3512 Buy a 40 tooth carbide blade thin curf, Rip your 2x4 in half lengthwise first, then reset your fence and rip the halves again to give you 4 equal boards. Note a 40 tooth thin curf is not designed for ripping but if you go slow, let the saw do the work you will get thicker boards with a nicer finish over using a ripping saw that eats up huge amounts of wood and gives a ruff sawn finish with much thinner boards.

    How come you didn't do the floo4 tiling first? I'd imagine your wall eventually molding near the concrete floor. I'm also planning to use rigid foam insulation but have seen other ways of using 3 mil poly that separates your inner wall from the concrete wall and floor. plus you want to use spray foam under that quarter inch gap between your floor and wall.

    The only thing I would recommend is that you stagger the joints better like one would do when laying flooring. Maybe it's because I used to do that for a living but having so many joints nearly line up vertically sticks out like a sore thumb to me. Especially under the right side of the window. There are techniques I'm sure you could Google to avoid this in the future. Otherwise it looks great!

      I've heard that staggering and then using insulation like rock or earthwool is meant to be great for sound proofing?, in your work have you found that at all. Thinking of trying to sound proof a room a bit the adjoining house as there can be transference through the walls of low frequencies like doors being closed and the like.
      Cheers

    • @Belg1970
      @Belg1970 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They make a special sheetrock that is used for soundproofing, just make sure you get the moisture resistant version for use in a basement. You also need to seal ALL gaps(pipes outlets) very well to prevent transfer.

      Make sure you screw into the studs. Or if you can't find them for some reason, anchor the hell out of it. You'll also have to make sure you cut the backside of the brads as they will stick through the wood and plywood and come out the back.

    • @cindyfisher3149
      @cindyfisher3149 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would make a 1x 4 frame that fits the wall you want to put it on and attach the boards to it, basically creating a stand alone wall. Then you can just anchor it to the wall in the corners assuming it isn't a large wall and you aren't hanging anything heavy on it.

    My husband and I are doing this now. Just bought a skil band saw. What is the best way to permanently adjust the " natural drift " of the blade. And what size blade did you use ? It's taking about 15-20 minutes to cut through one strip of the 2x4 then to end up with a crooked piece of wood. Frustrating!!

    • @chaddiy3512
      @chaddiy3512  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Allison, sorry to hear you are having trouble. Each band saw is different so it is hard for me to say how to adjust yours. On mine I just made sure the blade was fairly tight and had a ripping blade that has fewer teeth, but cuts really fast. Its hard to get rid of the drift completely, but you could practice on some smaller scrap peices first. Good luck with the project!

    Looks really good. Never thought about ripping 2x4s. Did you have any problems with the wood shrinking and leaving gaps after you installed?

    • @chaddiy3512
      @chaddiy3512  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robert, I really didn't have any problems with gaps later on...not that I could tell anyways. With wood though, there is always a little shrinking and expanding depending on the seasons.

    • @ThekiBoran
      @ThekiBoran 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      After you rip the 2x4s it's good to let it sit for a week 2 before matching further or installing. It's gonna shrink and twist as the more moist interior of the board dries.

    2 questions
    1. Did you cut off the rounded parts of the 2x4's or just leave them and put the rounded part against the wall?
    2. My wall isnt connected to another wall on the left side should I run a board vertical to avoid jagged edges?

    • @chaddiy3512
      @chaddiy3512  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! Yep, I left the rounded parts and put them against the wall so you can't tell the difference. I think the vertical board should work fine for you. I know there is a lot of different trim options that you could use after to cover up any jagged edges as well. Good luck!

    looks great Chad... so how did you anchor the stud the wall's attached to... glue only or concrete screws...??
    thanks... gonna try this...

    • @chaddiy3512
      @chaddiy3512  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! I first glued the insulation to the wall and then I used concrete screws that went through the wood and insulation into the wall. Here is the video of how I did it. th-cam.com/video/BoXGHtOCBDw/w-d-xo.html

      Might have been better to attach the studs directly to the wall and then add insulation between. Just sayin'.

    • @chaddiy3512

      Hi Juleen, It really didn't make a much of a difference, but most of my basement doesn't have insulation. I think if I did all the walls it would feel warmer down there.

    I've resawed the 2x4 into 4 sections as you did on the video. I've noticed a number of the boards, mainly the outside pieces have warped quite a bit. Did you experience any of this? thx

    • @chaddiy3512
      @chaddiy3512  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did notice a few boards that warped a little bit...but not too bad. It could depend on how dry the wood is when you start and how fast you are able to get it nailed up once you cut it. Good luck with the project!

    How do you recommend cutting the 2x4s I do to have a band saw.. its tough to get consistency in size

    • @chaddiy3512
      @chaddiy3512  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think a band saw or table saw will work. I wasn't to worried abut the size being a little off for each board, it just gives it a better "textured" look that way!

    • @usmen2012
      @usmen2012 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you use bandsaw make sure you use the widest blade you saw can accomodate,,this way you can avoid many issues

      @usmen2012 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Table saw ripping 3" plus thick wood is nothing but pain in the a....will burn the wood or burn the blade,,no way out,,to rip 3" thick wood you need high speed commercial table saw minimum 12" + blade,,dont botter to cut this on dewalt table saw,, so far bext portable table saw on market,,( didnt get penny from Dewalt yet,,:-)

      None of the big box stores will do this kind of milling, if you are looking for an alternative you can use fence pickets, $1.75 to 2.75 depending what part of the country you live plus big box sells them in varying widths. Or go to an independent fence company and see what they can do for you. I bought hand picked pickets from Lowes meaning I selected each one my self, they were 5 1/2 inches wide. a little over 6 foot long. I used a table saw to cut off the dog ears on one end then cut them in half long wise then cut each one in half again to make 4 pieces approximately 36 inches long and 2 1/2 wide. this small size suited the scale of the wall and the room size. the full size fence picket was to wide and over powered the scale of the wall. Hope this helps.
