    Hey y'all! We are so excited to get started with DIY's in our new house! This is just the first of many! So, we decided to go room to room and we started with Darryl's music studio! I decided to go with a rustic industrial gentleman feel to it! I chose to go with symmetrical planks versus staggered planks because I wanted a cabin like feel. Staggered planks could look really nice as well. I am so excited for you to see the rest of it!!!

    Wall looks great! A few tips for the next project. Stain first, its way easier and looks better. Stagger the joints, it looks way better that way. Cut the boards to that the ends never meet up on the same line. Thumbs up, you guys did great!

      Also... start at the bottom and hide your nails at the top of each peace so they're covered by the piece above.

      I would also take the switches and outlets off and put the planking behind them, then re-install with the tabs over the top of the planking so that your covers sit on top of the planking.

    when laying out boards, go first row all the way, and start with a leftover, there should never be a single strait line between columns like you have above the right door

      @@davidwatchesyoutube247 when you start, you place full boards all the way and cut the one at the end, then you start with full boards again from that end and cut the one on the opposite end, that way your boards get staggered.

    You 2 did a nice job on that wall.
    A technical point - working from the bottom up is easier. First row has the tongue cut off. Put the nails through the back lip of the groove, so they are invisible.

    I've been convinced I had to go with actual pallets (ripping them apart, pulling nails, renting a planner, worried about bugs & musty wood smells, etc...) You guys did such a great job. Your husband's patience and attention to precision cutting really paid off. This look adds a lot of rustic warmth to the room. Your choice of staining colors came out gorgeous. I love the fact that the wood is super clean & all the same thickness. Because of your video and how well your accent wall came out, you've convinced me this is the way to go. Thank you both for sharing your awesome project !! Kevin - Greensboro, North Carolina

    I usually prefer staggered boards, but aligning them highlights the length of the boards in a way that staggering doesn't. It's a very nice look, as demonstrated perfectly in this project.
    Another thing, that stain color is gorgeous. Great choice.

    Looks great but I personally would chop up the strips so there were staggered joints ...sort of like bricks ....otherwise you end up with a seam which bug me forever. Also I think I would use a few different strains and stain all the cut pieces and THEN nailem up randomly ...if you can picture that? Also by pre-staining you don't get the unfinished gaps you had to use a little brush on meticulously ....of course I have the benefit of learning after the fact from your experience! Again looks great! Love it!

    I saw a reply to someone's comment where you said that you didn't want to stagger the joints. I didn't see any explanation as to why though. Just personal preference or did you have a method behind it? In future, I'm pretty sure those stain pads are designed for when you're staining decking. I don't think they're really meant to hold the stain into the pad when you've got it held up against a wall like that. I would imagine that if you were to stain a floor you would find it quite useful as you wouldn't have to get down on your knees like with a rag. Something else you might think of doing is staining the wood prior to putting it on the wall. That'll let you get all of the sides very easily... just something to think about if you do something like this again at some point in time. I really like the color and the character that the final product brings to the room. Overall - Good job!

    I like this idea and it’s cheaper then buying decent floor wood to put on the wall
    but my question is what type of nails did u use?
    We’re u marking so they went into the the wood behind the sheet rock?
    I have held off on it since I don’t want the wall to fall I. The middle of the night. Maybe the rung and groove helps.
    Is it still up with no problems? Looks cool. I was thinking of trying wider wood. I seen it on this old house and it looked really cool. My luck all the wood would warp on the wall. Lol

  • @dtom420
    @dtom420 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Couple suggestions:
    1. The joints where one piece butts to another (end to end, horizontally) board should be randomly spread out. For example, between the door and the closet door, there should have been some joints created. Every board being solid between the doors makes it look fake. Just like on a big, open wood floor there should have been some staggered joints.
    2. For a remodel job you would have been better staining all the boards BEFORE you cut them or hung them. This makes for far less danger of messing up the carpet or the trim or even the paint on the remaining painted walls. Also, by pre-staining the boards, you can see what you’re hanging and where; providing you the ability to design the coloration of the wall. Finally, pre-staining means the ONLY things you need to stain, once the wall is finished, are the ends of the pieces you cut and some minor touch-ups.
    Wall did look great; but a few little changes like these would make it THAT much better! Hope this helps.

    I love this idea! I have been wanting an accent wall in my living room for such a long time but all of the options I had found were either too pricy or difficult to install. this is perfect. Can't wait to try it. :)

    "It elevates the room," that's going to be my new philosophy/theme for all the home DIY projects my wife and I will be doing. Great project. Loved how it turned out. It has me motivated now! 😊

    I love what you did with your wall, it looks amazing! I have a couple of questions. What kind of tool did your husband use to make the precision cuts in the panels to fit them around the trim and electrical wall plugs? Please know that I'm a 60-year-old lady and I have no tools, but I can rent them. I also have very little experience in the DIY arena, but I'm learning and I learned a lot from your video. Also, do you think I could stagger the panels on the wall in the same way that wood or laminate flooring is laid (if you know what I mean)? Thanks.

    Dang I just sanded 15 fence boards for a day because I couldn't find any planks that were inexpensive..these would have worked lol.
    I think you should have stained the boards first - but it looks great. I would have offset the boards but that's just a personal taste =D Also stain in the breaks would be nice, some was missed and it looks a little off.

  • @mwest3583
    @mwest3583 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Proper installation involves cutting the boards into different lengths to stagger them on the wall So you don’t end up with one straight vertical seam where all the boards end.

      @@MyLovelyTexasHome I'm so happy I found this video my room is really big which seems amazing but it's so annoying trying to decorate it. Not to mention the floor boards the walls and just about everything isn't my style at all.

    Hey looks beautiful. Did you also use burn/scorch marks on this ? Or is that just how staining wood makes it look ? That’s the exact effect I’m after in my campervan

    Nice! Did y’all think about varying the length of the planks and decide not to? I’m only wondering about the thought process, so would appreciate a peek into your thinking. Considering this to create an alcove for for my bathtub

      I just did my bathroom ceiling with this same product from Home Depot. I would recommend varying the length so there isn't a seam that catches the eye all in one place. It takes a little longer and requires measuring and cutting your ends of each run, but you end up with a little better look. The thing they had going for them in the video is that they ony had a long run on the top 3 planks so it wasn't horrible... if they had done that all the way down the wall it would be really obvious. I'm going to do a wall in my bedroom next. OH... and it is quite inexpensive.

    • @MyLovelyTexasHome
      @MyLovelyTexasHome  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! I actually didn't want to vary the length of the planks for this wall. This is the style I wanted. Varying the length looks nice as well, I did that in my office but for this DIY, I love the way the seamless wood wall looks.

      Wood around steam? There is a reason people use everything else possible and keep real wood products away from water and steam. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but research the actual wood to be used and make sure you are using a wood product that won’t expand and shrink or delaminate; or if using real wood, seal it on all sides before installing it (such as with pine tar, tung oil, and pine gum turpentine solution, which was used by ancient mariners to seal wood boats for ocean use and has no modern petrochemical garbage)....
      Good luck.

      @deonivert 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm sorry but I have to tell you, this is not a seamless wall if you have one seam running down the entire wall. If you wanted a seamless wall you should have used wood the length of the wall, just saying.

    Next time you try this although it turned out great to make it easier the next time if you stain them first you can use the rag the whole time and also if you remove the outlet covers you can put them on after but great job non the less
