Thank you for this!!! I needed it and yours was the only one I could find that discussed staggering of planks! Now, to find the other video you mentioned!
Great tip for planking walls like this application is to apply #felt behind the planks to avoid seeing the insulation in the gaps or when boards shrink
Wouldn't it depend on the type of wood.? If it's barn wood that you're using it's going to be weathered, so it's already shrunk. So, that's where you would use the black or a Cocoa Brown backing. His looks like a different kind of wood. Treated wood maybe? The wood is so straight and fits snug to one another. I don't see any gaps in between the wood, so maybe that's why he's not using any backing
Excellent! Thanks so much! I also wasn't keen on aligned boards neither, now thanks to your expertise, I know that staggered joints are structurally stronger than aligned joints. 😀
i guess im randomly asking but does anyone know a tool to get back into an instagram account..? I somehow forgot the login password. I would love any tricks you can give me.
@Titus Tyson I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Thank you very much for explaining it! I've watched several videos stating how to stagger, but then it shows the first board put up and then staggering the second board, & next clip is the finished project. Yours explained it very well!
There's a similar idea when hanging drywall. Staggering the joints also makes the joint way less obvious. If a joint was to run the entire 8 feet, it would look hellish. Good vid!
Thank You, I am making my first attempt at this not for structural purpose just visual but was trying to get a mental picture of staggering boards for best look. Great description Thank You so much.
I understand that. If a person with any amount of carpentry skill saw it they would know without you saying a word. It is the same method for laying a hardwood floor.
I learned a great deal from this video. I appreciate you answering questions people sent after your first video on this topic. I have a question I'm hoping you or perhaps someone else will answer. On the second row is the last piece up at the end of the row the rest of the eight foot section you began with? Thank you so much!
Thank you, I was thinking it’s better to start at the top so you have a full length board at the top but I noticed you started at the bottom, why is that?
putting up some rainbow poplar in a few days. what should i use for sealing it up? should i have all that done before i put it up or do it after install
If you have a wall that 89” wide and your siding is 96” wide do you need to artificially create seams or can you run the wall up without a seam being a single board covers the length? Thx.
Hi I just did a tear out on a wall down to studs. Can I insulate and nail pine planks directly to studs? Do I need tongue and groove or can I just use like 6in wide pine planks? What do you recommend. Thanks
Great video, I think I understand all of it but,ci have a few qu's.. Likely dumb ones but I am a complete Novice to this. What type of wood is best to use for the most attractive look ? Paint, stain or just urethane ( natural look ) . do you think doing the entire inside of a 900sqf house is to much ?. Thanks again. Sub'ed and hit notifications
No, they will stay rough. No, they are cedar so no treatment needed. Just chinking. This video was actually shot a few weeks ago and I could not decide if I was going to post it....... So different shirt....lol. And no, they make great work shirts......LMAO
If it’s a paper faced batt of insulation like he has you can’t put a barrier you’ll get condensation. Batts like RockWool you can if you want because it’s not faced.
What do you do if there are gabs between planks? I kind of worry about critters building nest behind the planks and you can't get to the . I have some badly damaged walls in my apartment the contractor ditched me after delaying for the whole summer to fix the walls(I guess the job of fixing walls is probably not profiting enough). Instead of fixing them with drywalls, I would like to build plank walls. Would you suggest filling the space between studs with foam or something? I'd appreciate some idea. Thanks : )
Great video!!! I will be beginning this very thing for the interior-walls of our log cabin in Idaho (previous owner had sheetrock on inner walls and I've wrecked all of that abomination out...) this weekend and am using cedar plank that I have ripped to uniform widths (little more narrow than yours). My question is, did you use any type of uniform spacing between planks? As in a penny, dime, etc, something of the sort? Why (what) or why not? Again, thank you sir for this video as I searched it our for the 'pattern' guidance that you offered. MAGA...
Just watched this video. Great job on explaining the spacing, why you need to do it, and how. I am an amateur DIYer and I Thank You!

Very humble man.. nice to see this. Sweet video man
Most helpful. I knew staggering was needed, just didn’t know the best way to go about it. Thank you!
You're a good man. Thank you for your help!
Great tip for planking walls like this application is to apply #felt behind the planks to avoid seeing the insulation in the gaps or when boards shrink
For the "felt", I thought I would try, landscaping fabric. I'm trying to cut my costs.

@@rottiemom1891 tar paper works perfectly
There will be gaps since no board is perfectly atraight. Always put non reflective black material of some sort behind your boards.

@Jackson Hamza instablaster ;)

@Titus Tyson It did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much, you saved my ass !
@Jackson Hamza no problem :D
Thanks! Was just starting a project as a beginner. Helped a ton!
Thanks, this is the only video that really makes since....
You did explain it well for those who don't know. Nice Job.
Thanks Danny! It's hard for me to have a "one way conversation"....lol. I always think, "man I should have said this, or that"......
I fully understand what you're talking bout. I just couldn't ever do that. You do a good job I think.
Thank you very much for explaining it! I've watched several videos stating how to stagger, but then it shows the first board put up and then staggering the second board, & next clip is the finished project. Yours explained it very well!
Thank you! I am so glad that helped! That is honestly why I do videos!
Thanks RBS FOR SHARING AND EXPLAINING I'm using home depot weathered planks.. you help me out
Use Evertrue pine planks from Lowe's and Minwax Water based polyurethane. That's what I did. Less than $300 for a wall and a ceiling.

Thanks!
All kinds of fun stuff you can make with those. Desks, Tables, Bookshelves.
Great technique and reason for staggering. Those first 5 courses look very nice. Looking forward to seeing your progress. Thank you Darby.
Thanks! It amazes me how hard it is for me to try to explain something clearly on a video that would take me 1 minute face to face.....lol.
I understand that. If a person with any amount of carpentry skill saw it they would know without you saying a word. It is the same method for laying a hardwood floor.
Great Video … Thanks for sharing your talents!! I helped us a ton!!!
It helped us a ton :)
Exactly answered my question....thanks.
Excellent video sir!! Perfect explanation for those not as inclined. Great job!!
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
I love your videos and I love this one. How thick were those wall planks and they're Cedar right?
Excellent explanation Darby. Can't wait to see the cabin again. Bet you can't wait to move in ....ken
Thanks Ken! It gets a little closer every week.....lol
Very helpful. Thank you.
This was helpful. Thank you
Can you tell me how to get rid of my mother in law?
Get rid of your old lady. Worked for me!
Thank you, I was looking for this type of video as I’m shiplapping a 19’ wall soon, this explains what I was thinking 👍
David Muratore I thought ship lap boards layer right next to each other and not staggered?
Michelle Hood then the seems would line up vertically and look like paneling so to me the staggered look offsets that as he explains
Just what I needed, Thank u!

thanks alot for a good instructional video!
Thanks for great video!!
Thank you, I was thinking it’s better to start at the top so you have a full length board at the top but I noticed you started at the bottom, why is that?
Your wall looks great. Unfortunately, I got lost partway through this. I’m trying to build the same thing.
Thank you so much ! Just what I needed !

Do you have any videos about putting tongue and goove on at a 45 degree angle? I think that always looks so neat and it makes the ceiling seem higher.
I have the same question! Please share your knowledge or any direction on 45* shiplap. Once u get to the corners it's a doozy
Is this help for keep the room heat on winter and cool on summer ???

Thank you! Great video
Doing a ceiling that isn’t square with tung and groove, how do you correct ?
how do you end cut the boards so they are tight and look clean?

Isn't sheet rock required for fire code under any wood put on the wall?
Great beard!
Appreciate this
If you have a wall that’s 10’ and you have 10’ boards ..... do you still want to stagger your boards or hang them up as is to fit wall?
I would think that would be a personal choice. I still staggered short walls for the look of it. However I did not stagger inside the closets.....
have a couple questions. will you be sanding the wall down and covered it with anything? Did you give Sid shirt back? sorry.lol
No, they will stay rough. No, they are cedar so no treatment needed. Just chinking. This video was actually shot a few weeks ago and I could not decide if I was going to post it....... So different shirt....lol. And no, they make great work shirts......LMAO

Hey thanks for the video. I was wondering, is there no need to have some type of barrier between the insulation and panels?
If it’s a paper faced batt of insulation like he has you can’t put a barrier you’ll get condensation. Batts like RockWool you can if you want because it’s not faced.
What nail did you use?
Do I need to stagger the ceiling or try and do on long plank?
Is that shiplap or t&g

Yes, mine will be chinked...... That is the process of filling the gaps, plenty of products available online for that.... Thanks for watching!
Can I do this on a exterior wall without sheetrock?
Yes
Thank you
looks great
Thanks!

Your staggering looks like stairs.... You should use a different staggering pattern...
That section was staggered like that for the video...... Its behind a desk, as explained in the video it needs to be a random stagger.....
How to whitewash this
Thank you!!
