Really looking forward to reading about all the albums but especially everything from Tug of War through to Flowers In The Dirt - absolutely my era of Macca albums. Love them all! Many thanks for alerting me to this book through your channel.

    I haven't got this one yet, though I know I should pick it up. Luca's done some great research, so I'm sure this one is top notch too. And yes, reading details about a track while simultaneously listening to it is one of my nerdy passions too.
    The amazing thing to me is that it doesn't seem that long ago that the popular consensus was that Paul's solo career wasn't worthy of serious study. Nice to see his work getting the in-depth appreciation it deserves.

    This book has been on my coffee table for months and I have only read a portion of the introduction. I feel the same as you about reading it - hard to just sit down and read it like a regular book. I read The McCartney Legacy book (loved it!) and also The Lyrics book cover to cover. (loved that one too). I will get to this one when I decide to sit down and listen to each individual Paul album and read the info that goes along with it in this book. It does look excellent! The books never stop, do they? Ken Womack was at the Chicago Beatlefest last summer where he gave a slide show presentation about his Mal book. I will be reading that one too (eventually!).

    I have the paperback edition, and I love it, so much attention to detail, and you're spot on with the comparison to Mark Lewisohn's Beatles Recording Sessions book, (which I'm currently referring to as I listen to the new mixes on the Red Album) I can imagine that the research on this book must've been a labour of love for Luca, I know it would've been for me had I been writing it. But I'm just dipping in and out of it. Loved the sections on McCartney and McCartney II albums. It is well worth investing in, and I can't wait for volumes two and three. Daumiers Law as a project was mentioned in the news section of Beatles Monthly around either the end of '89 beginning of '90, but I never heard anymore about it so assumed it had either been abandoned or partly made and then got archived. So this just goes to show how we can still learn stuff from books like these. I'd thoroughly recommend this book to every McCartney fan...

    Great review, Andrew. I bought Luca Perasi's "McCartney recording Sessions (1969-2013)" back in 2013 when it came out - and loved it. I got the book you are covering in this video "Paul McCartney - Music Is Ideas (Vol. 1) 1970-1989" this year. It has a lot of the same material that is in the 2013 book - but is updated and in a nicer format. I wondered about when Volume 2 would be available - so thanks very much for telling us that it will likely be out in 2024. I am looking forward to getting all the info for Paul's material since 2013. And the additional info about a third volume (which will cover all his collaborations and appearances with other artists) - sounds great.
    Again - thanks for this review - and all the info about the upcoming additional volumes.

    Daumier's Law was shown in full on UK terrestrial TV in the 1990s. It was part of a programme about the animator who also did the frog song film. Forgot his name. Never heard of Daumier's Law before or since, until now.

    Hi Andrew , I enjoyed your review and I also tend to sit and listen to music with a reference book to hand. Which brings me to how does this book stack up against my go to reference book, Eight Arms to hold you. The reference format can be a bit dry but I would probably purchase the Luca Perasi Volume if you think there would be added info and a bit more human Interest rather than stats. Keep up the hard work I ,ove the channel

    Andrew - I am wondering how you feel about Paul's "The Lyrics - 1956 to the Present" paperback edition having an additional 7 songs . If you want those songs... you have to get the paperback. I guess it's a way to try and sell more books... Personally - I'd love to see Paul put out a second volume with another 150 of his songs covered.

    So, Andrew, 'Music Is Ideas' and 'The McCartney Legacy' are the books to get? More so than 'The Lyrics' and Paul Du Noyer's 'Conversations with McCartney'?

    • @AndrewDixonMusic
      @AndrewDixonMusic  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can't comment on the conversations book as I've not read that. McCartney lyrics book is great but I often found a lack of detail or he'd go wandering off topic while talking about a song (which is great, I could listen to McCartney go off topic for hours!). But if you want something more focussed, then for a bio type book McCartney Legacy is unrivalled, and if you want something more of a reference book to get detail of how his songs and albums were recorded then Music Is Ideas is the best there's been on the subject

  • @BrianR2395
    @BrianR2395 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can we assume that if we buy this new book we won't need his previous book Paul McCartney: Recording Sessions (1969-2013)? I realize the earlier book covers up to 2013, but is it otherwise completely redundant?

    • @lucaperasi2096
      @lucaperasi2096 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes exactly, this new book surpasses the old Recording Sessions. It's also more detailed and complete.

    Trivia question for all you Paul McCartney fans...
    The title of the book that Andrew is reviewing in this video is "Paul McCartney - Music Is Ideas (Vol. 1) 1970-1989".
    What song does the "Music Is Ideas" line come from..?
    I don't think anyone but a really huge McCartney fan - would know the answer to that question.
    Andrew.... do you know it..?

    • @AndrewDixonMusic
      @AndrewDixonMusic  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do, a brilliantly crazy song from the mid 80s, I won't name it in case anyone wants to play along, but another clue is "I don't actually like sitting down music" 👍

    • @aBeatleFan4ever
      @aBeatleFan4ever 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AndrewDixonMusic - Great job, Andrew. But your clues really narrowed it down for any of the others who might want to play along. You've cut down the potential answers to about 5% of his total songs. I'm generally a little more stingy with my clues... Thanks for playing along.
