I couldn’t be happier with these new versions of Red and Blue. Such a joyful experience listening to the new mixes, newly added songs and the nicely reissued packaging
Maybe for the CD's, but the vinyl packaging kind of sucks.. Lazy, unimaginative slipcase artwork - thin, flimsy, unlaminated jackets - no poly inner sleeves - odd track order choices, etc. Surely they could've done better! At least it's pressed at Optimal in Germany. 🤷🏻
@@garethmathew69 sure but some of those comparisons would be on Blue not Red. However, I understand. My personal favorite version of “roll over Beethoven” is actually the ELO one
I still have my Red and Blue albums I bought back in 1978!! Both are now unplayable but very nostalgic for me. I used "masking tape" to hold the inner sleeves together. I bought 2014 Blue album last year and the new Red album to add to my collection. both sound great. I'll pick up the new Blue album on CD soon. Thanks for the review!! ~~/)~~
I much prefer the CD versions of the red and blue albums simply because the additional tracks have been placed in their correct chronological order, whereas to me at least, the LP versions feel tacked on. Also, now that Now and Then reached #1 in the UK, I wonder if we’ll see an updated “1” album.
Walrus is one of the most important songs of the 20th century. John Lennon only put music out between 1962 and 1980, with 5 of those years being in retirement. It's an amazing achievement that changed not only music but world culture. Maybe he would have liked this new version of Walrus. Maybe not, but the point is he can't approve this. He can't approve of any of these mix changes. This seems like an ethical issue on music with historical importance...not to mention the love of so many fans all over the world.
Yes this should be a consideration. For example the stripped-down version of 'Across The Universe' on Naked, I thought that was weak. John approved the Spector produced version for release. Thought he'd worked wonders with it. On the other hand the remix of 'Hey Bulldog' on the YS Soundtrack fixed an obvious mistake, his vocal being too low in the mix on the verses. Sometimes they omit things in the fade-out. I'm thinking 'You Know My Name' and 'Meat City'. You're right! They have no right to do that. John didn't release product from 1976-1979 but he was not idle. We're still hearing the fruits thereof notably recently 'Now And Then'.
I tend to fall into the category of someone who loves the original mixes and I am a huge Giles Martin fan I love what he has done to all of the mixes so far. I love the song yellow submarine especially with the guitar and vocals starting off with each other whereas in the stereo mix the vocals come in but the acoustic guitar comes in a second late and I love the fact that John Lennon‘s first line which is restored and that is the line a life of ease One of the great highlights for me is hearing all the drums which are finally brought up in the mix I especially love the drum rolls on eight days a week I thought well you can actually hear Ringo’s drums especially when the Beatles sing the line 8 days a week. I love the new remix of I am the walrus I think it’s really fantastic from the blue album I was immediately blown away and I also love the clean introductions to a day in the life and dear prudence, when I first heard that clean intro of dear prudence I was thinking wow this is amazing this is something that I have never heard before I’ve always heard dear prudence as the song fades in and the plane sounds of back in the USSR fades out which I think is just brilliant. The rubber soul remixes that we just got I think are fantastic along with all of the other remixes especially on Sergeant Pepper along with let it be revolver Abbey Road and the White album. all of the rubber soul remixes are fantastic the ones that we have gotten so far and I love Ringo‘sBongos and a hard days night, and how clear everything sounds not just on that song but on the entire red and blue albums.
Completely agree about the tracks that deserve to be added & the tracks that 'over-achieved'. I would've much preferred songs such as Rain, Things We Said Today & For No One. Maybe something like It Won't Be Long & All I've Got To Do instead of Roll Over Beethoven & You Really Got A Hold On Me.
I agree! Not a fan of those two songs. Love their version of Twist and Shout better than Isley Brothers. Why they chose the two songs you mentioned is beyond me.
That's the great thing about the Fab Four, so many fantastic songs that there is something in the repertoire to please us all. Personally I am happy with the songs on Red and Blue although one of my choices for extra tracks would be She's a Woman, but we can't all have everything. Thank you Andrew for your contribution.
Got both the red and blue on vinyl for Christmas and have been listening nonstop. I love the way the the track listing works with the original tracks on the 1st 2 discs and the added tracks on the 3rd. Makes for a unique listening experience. And I understand wanting to end with Now and Then but I think I Want You (She’s So Heavy) is the perfect closing track with the sudden cut out. Very symbolic of the Beatles amazing career!
It's a fab month to be a Beatles fan. I've got a feeling that the folks at Apple could have had a few more meetings and also included some key fans from the VC prior to settling on the track listings for the new red and blue sets. It has a rushed vibe about it 🍏
Thanks for a well considered overview of perhaps the most confused and confusing Beatles' release of recent times. You have made some very good points and I believe have been very balanced in your views. I personally believe something very odd happened that resulted in what we got in the end, but I suspect that we will never learn what that was. The different vinyl and CD configurations makes no sense unless ideas changed regarding additional tracks until after orders had been put in for pressing and it was too late or expensive to change. The placing of Now and Then on a CD that has unmatched dates also does not make sense. This sounds like a bit of an odd collision of choices that have been made and not fully thought through. Unusual for recent releases which, with minor quibbles, have been excellent. The CD single issue, the fact that the boxed set of Red and Blue in addition to individual releases that potentially scuppered higher charting in the album charts, the fact that initially it was intimated that a few mono mixes would be present on the Red album and we then got full stereo mixes albeit with a somewhat inferior sounding She Loves You. These and other issues seem to be a little strange. There are other oddities surrounding this release which feel as if it was subject to changes or some sort of 'committee' plan that has resulted in a few misfires.. That said, you are quite correct to congratulate The Beatles on the tremendous achievement of another chart topping single. Personally I think that the extended track listings and price point for the Red and Blue albums has reduced the casual or impulse sale. Two triple albums or double CDs at a premium price was perhaps a step too far for many impulse buyers who would otherwise have purchased a best of collection. I guess financially this was a tremendous success but it perhaps affected album chart position adversely. Still a very good result nonetheless! I concur with you on many points. Now and The was a far better production than we had any right to expect. Paul and Ringo along with other did an amazing job. I think Peter Jackson's appearance has had a very positive effect over the last few years too and I hope that he will continue to work on future projects. He is clearly a massive fan and a positive force. I also agree with many of your comments about Giles. He has likewise been a great plus in the direction that things have taken place in recent years and on the whole his remixes have been excellent. So it has been a very exciting and rewarding period, with a few reservations. Hopefully a revised Anthology music and video project will follow,, Let It Be movie release as promised, and more deluxe editions of the remaining albums.
I can’t believe on my side of the world ( Australia)…. At our major music store that I can’t order the final Beatles single on CD ….. they say on their website that they are Out of Stock and won’t be ordering any more ….. I thought that you ordered to supply but evidently not ….. this is The Beatles not some new band starting up….. and I know Australia is a smaller market BUT it’s supposedly THE LAST Single so demand is there….. very frustrating.
I’m absolutely fine with all the new releases on CD. I bought the ‘box set’ of Red & Blue on CD and the slipcase is great and so much better than I had expected. I think you make some excellent observations re the releases and I’m very much with you. 3/4 of Walrus is excellent it’s just the last 1/4 where it goes a bit awry. I’m coming to terms with it by treating Walrus as an alternate mix. I’m confident we’ll get a new MMT box set eventually where they could include all the film versions etc. Red album should give us all hope for remix box sets to come. I’m still awaiting my pre ordered 12” single but at least I got my clear vinyl, cassette & Red/Blue CD boxset.
I really wonder what the reasoning was behind mixing Old Brown Shoe the way they did, leaving lead guitar parts out that can clearly be heard in earlier stereo versions.
I’ve had to resort to the MP3s for this release. I pre ordered the vinyls online on the day of release and I’m still waiting for them. Has anyone else had this happen to them as well?
I really like the '23 mixes. Ringo's drumming really stands out. And, like you mentioned, some guitars pop out that I haven't heard in the past. I'm biased but many of these should be in top 100 as they are better than most music today. Nothing against Taylor Swift, but these songs are much better.
Its more about hearing the back ground guitars. Hearing acoustic guitars and stuff that gets hard to discern among other instruments. The pianos and cellos and all symphony instruments are much more easy to discern. There's a different between being able to hear what's going on, and able to discern what's going on.
@anthonyburke223 I think there is a need to compare and to make judgement on many things. For example, some Beef Wellingtions are better than others that tend to leave a somewhat bitter aftertaste.
I sometimes wonder if we are all over analysing, based on the revealed detail coming out in these new mixes. Are we trying to do the worst thing when, for example, there's a joke, then we all analyse why it's funny? Surely, like a joke, we all appreciate it for what it is, without trying to dissect it and look for its constituent parts to try to make out why it's good. Just a thought from an absolute Beatles devotee.
I love the new mixes, having purchased all the new mixes as they were released I have all the blue album mixes already (bar the newly mixed ones). The red I was more excited about as a result. It got me emotional as finally songs like ‘in my life’ ‘twist and shout’ and ‘all my loving’ don’t have the hard panning ‘vocal in right channel and instrumentals in left’ I think on how more accessible it makes the songs while listening under headphones and how many new fans will be drawn in as a result. Absolutely fab, great review too 🎉
Andrew, you've hit the nail on the head when you said keeping "Beatles For Sale" down to one track on the "Red" will encourage many more sales when the full album is remixed. It's all a marketing (money) ploy!! Same with "With The Beatles" - they've put two questionable extra tracks on the "Red".
I do agree with Andrew that the majority of the new mixes are wonderful. Hopefully, in the future with the probable release of new super deluxe box sets for Rubber Soul & Magical Mystery Tour etc., they will offer even more new remixes for us to reimagine and appreciate the Beatles music.
I just want to say I’m a huge fan of yours since I found you within the last week because I’ve been obsessing about the Beatles. Your voice is perfect for this stuff. Keep the Beatles stuff going! Hopefully we get Rubber Soul remix album soon.
Finally got them ! It is just a flat out great release. These mixes sound much brighter and more flat out rocking. The older mixes were good for their day but to these ears this is a big leap 😅! Purists will be pissed but don’t care. Now & Then a brilliant goodbye. The video is fabulous!
Re the lack of reference on the packaging to these being new mixes - I think this is more that Apple are thinking long-term these will become the default mixes. I don't agree with that personally but i think that's the way they are manoeuvring and so they don't want to advertise (to new fans) these are not the "originals". I've noticed on the Beatles official TH-cam channel, for example, that some of the new videos of Giles' Revolver remixes don't make clear they are new mixes... so the casual listener might think that's the original mix.
And the new Revolver sounds terrible (to me) compared with the original mix. So if a new listener is unable to know that a Giles Martin remix they are hearing is not the original, they may come away unimpressed with The Beatles in general.
Agree mostly with your lists of songs that should & shouldn't be on the packages. I would add to the "should be" list: "Within You Without You", "If I Needed Someone", "Oh Darling","I Me Mine". Whilst i'm not a fan of either "Here There & Everywhere" & "Tomorrow Never Knows", they are essential songs to the Beatles catalogue.
Hi Andrew I've just had a thought. I don't know why the red and blue albums on the physicals don't refer to them as new mixes. But wouldn't the more casual Beatles fan be listening to them on streaming rather than CD etc. In which case, the tracks are clearly listed as 2023 mixes (on the red anyway) on these platforms. But you may well be right about keeping them for later and just remastering them to suit their respective albums, the remixes are class 👌.
Have an update on She Loves You and Old Brown Shoe. She Loves You in Dolby Atmos doesn’t seem to suffer from the distortion (quality) like the CD and regular HD version on streaming. I actually find the Atmos version to be an enjoyable listen. Also, Old Brown Shoe in Dolby Atmos doesn’t suffer (as much) the absence of the guitar feeder at the 30 to 40 second mark like the CD and HD streaming versions. This is very bizarre. Therefore, for a proper mix listen to those two songs in Dolby Atmos only. That being said we need better quality control here…
Good review. I agree that there are a few tracks that are lucky to be on this compilation - I do actually like the way the additional tracks have been placed on the third vinyl
Andrew, I don't think I have any quibbles with your observations, and your assessments of these releases is just about spot-on!! 👍 I love the sounds of these; the clarity of individual instruments and separated vocals is astonishing, and little parts that you've known for decades suddenly sounds different because something that was once buried in the mixes, is now free and clear to hear, is just amazing; I love them...but with those same caveats!! 😂 Great review... 👍
I think you did a really fair and even review, unlike so many others. You are right about these being the go to headphone mixes now. I’m glad another musician spotted that amazing guitar in Magical Mystery Tour … it just shouts “8 hours a night in Hamburg” to me, it’s amazing. But you are right, I went back to another mix and it was kinda always there but so far back in the mix.
I listened to the Blue vinyl last night and was totally baffled by the running order for side 5... a brand new song, then three tracks from the White Album, and then a jump back to Sgt Pepper for "Within You, Without You." Makes no sense. I'm enjoying (most of) the new mixes, but to some extent it all feels a bit slapdash, oddly curated, and not well planned out.
It's getting messy with so many mixes / versions of Beatles songs. But the worst thing is that some of the songs have been messed up, like "I Feel Fine", where in the original version, the opening drumbeat is on the right and the buzzing sound and initial guitars on the right, with the vocal appearing in the middle. It was a great effect. Now everything is in the middle. I was happy with the 2009 remasters, have the whole set of them.
Really informative video, thank you. Have got both originals on vinyl, but plan on getting the new red on cd to hear the remixes, have most of the blue remixes already in box sets, but may still get it anyway!
I was dissapointed about the new mix of revolution, because all guitars are still hard panned on one speaker, the best remix is from the love album where john guitar is on one speaker and george's is on the other.
I think if we stop thinking of the Red and the Blue as "greatest hits" packages, per se, and more as "career retrospective" collections then the additions cannot be faulted. Sure, Rain is an odd omission (as, arguably, is one more from Beatles For Sale - Every Little Thing, possibly?) One can argue about individual inclusions (the two from Abbey Road seen a bit left-field but then, Abbey Road needs to be covered in some depth and it's difficult to include anything from the second side since that really needs to be heard in context). Within You Without you is there because it represents George's Indian phase which, like it or not, was central to the band for a good eighteen months. But, ultimately, I think they've done a magnificent job in summing up The Beatles career across twelve sides of vinyl or four CDs. And, for what it's worth, I LOVE the new mixes of She Loves You and I Am The Walrus. My particular favourite, however, is If I Needed Someone on which the guitars sounds so bright it's like they're playing in my living room! Excellent summation, Andrew.
Anyone noticed that on "We can work out" that the first hi-hat hit on the line "life is very short" has been muted out? I'm not even a big beatles fan and noticed this straight away. Also, the drums on Ticket to Ride have been pushed back. I don't like the inconsistensia as some tracks sound better.
Some awesome early songs not included in the new "Red" album: It Won't Be Long Things We Said Today She's a Woman I'm a Loser What You're Doing The Night Before I Need You I've Just Seen a Face It's Only Love I'm Looking Through You Rain Good Day Sunshine For No One But I guess they had to give people a reason to buy the "regular" albums.
Thanks for this review, Andrew. I agree with most of what you say. I'm a few years older than you and have been following The Beatles since I first heard Love Me Do on the radio in 1962. Some of the remixes work really well - especially on the Red Album. But certain things (eg the opening chord of A Hard Day's Night) send me straight back to the original mono recordings with their analogue ambience and sound of frying chips before the first note. All in all, a good job by Giles Martin. And the original mixes are still around to be enjoyed - it's not like they've been erased.
I agree, Andrew, about the choice of cover, ie. The reverse cover being more appropriate, given its recent history. However. I recall thinking the same of Paul's 'McCartney' album. The photo of him with baby Mary would have made a much nicer cover than a table of red berries. In my view. But what do I know? I presume Paul had his reasons - in both cases?
Funny, you are right on point. I was thinking the same thing the other day. When the 1 was remixed in 2015 those songs on the remixed albums Sgt. Pepper (2017), White (2018), Abbey (2019), Let It Be (2021), Revolver (2022) received newer remixes. Therefore, when MMT finally gets a deluxe remix treatment I assume we will see a newer remix to streamline the sound of the entire album as a cohesive whole.
As a Beatles fan from the beginning, I don't have any disagreement with anyone who loves "Now and Then". It was just that the tears were too much. It's a good Beatles song, but not a great one. Some of the decisions on tracks on the Red and Blue I disagree with. If you find yourself humming to a Beatles song, it's probably more likely to be "Real Love" rather than "Dear, Prudence".
The red & blue albums bring it full circle for me as it was my starting point to my introduction to the Beatles, with Beatles for sale, imo it’s a slow burner for me, wasn’t keen on it to start with, but it’s really grown on me over the years & I think it’s a great album, I’m looking forward to a rubber soul box set
I hope we don't have to wait too much longer for the "missing" Beatles albums to get the deluxe treatment. As a first generation fan (I'm 76) , the clock is ticking for fans like myself. Next year I'd love to see "Please Please Me" and "With The Beatles" (WTB) get new stereo mixes.Particularly WTB as that album has probably the worst stereo mixes of all of their albums. The new stereo mix of All My Loving gives me confidence that WTB can sound great in stereo. Soon, I hope?
You can't press and print a CD single in huge quantities in a last-minute rush, Andrew. It was already set to go. There was no delay on orders or shipping once they announced it.
I agree the CD single was certainly ready, the way it was announced though gave a very different perception that I know annoyed many fans. Maybe fans got theirs quickly, but there also still plenty of people out there who cannot get hold of it, or haven't received orders they placed on day of announcement. There was a lot could have been done better with this side of things.
Wonderful video Andrew. I have listened closely to both the new Red and Blue albums on a very good, if not esoteric , sound system at high volume . I agree with virtually all of your opinions. Except I do love the end of I Am the Walrus!
hello Andrew, I've been a long-time listener to your Beatle podcast on TH-cam, and always have enjoyed them immensely... The latest review is no exception. I have been a lifelong Beatle fan over 60yrs plus. I think that the latest Beatle products are great! It takes some getting used to hearing the new mixes, but like most everyone else the more I listen to the new mixes the more I like them. I found rather disconcerting the opening cord of Hard Days Night in the new mix at first it reminded me of the version that is on Anthology Vol 1. I'm really enjoying a lot of the new mixes especially We Can Work It Out and Day Tripper. The Vol 2 of the albums 67 - 70 takes a little more getting used to especially I Am The Walrus but as someone has stated I just look at it as an alternate take/mix of the song. Finally what can I say about Now and Then , it is a fantastic way to close The Beatles epic career it's so moving that my s/o and I were moved to tears, and the video is fantastic. Of course we know that this will not be the last Beatle product but it may well be the last song on which all four Beatles work together. Hopefully Anthology is going to be rereleased on Blu-ray after being cleaned up. Check out the podcast Things We Said Today another conversation with Peter Jackson who hints that his team is working on Beatle projects just to get them done and on the shelves with no specific time for release yet, heres hoping it will be soon! Cheers, great work! Beatles forever!!!!!!
Hello Andrew, the shops in Sweden only got 25 copies each of "Now and Then" so they were sold out immediately and, although I've ordered the 7' they still seem to have problem deliver it here
I don't buy the idea that the awful sound quality on She Loves You was "unavoidable" considering there are hundreds of fan mixes available online which sound perfect. It's just baffling and suggests a real lack of quality control.
It would've been nice if the CD single of "Now and Then" had been a 4-track single, and had included stereo mixes of "P.S. I Love You" and "I'll Get You", which had never been in stereo before. Maybe throw in the Ringo-on-tambourine version of "Love Me Do" as well, as a 5th track. Re: the 20 old songs newly included in Red & Blue, it srikes me as unfair that fully half of them are John-focused, while the remaining half are split evenly between Paul and George. Why does Paul get only half as many as John? Is he considered only half as important as John, and no more important than George? Makes it seem like the tracks must've been chosen by someone who we can bet holds that view, like...Yoko Ono.
Wonderful to hear your impressions, always thoughtful! I was thinking of waiting for future album sets to hear the new mixes, but I may go for Red & Blue. Have you found the vinyl to have any edge sound-wise over the CDs?
Great review. I’ve got to agree the red album is the more stand out of the two, even though the blue is also brilliant with the inclusion of “Now and then” at the end. My only minor gripe is I could do without “Within you without you”. They definitely could have picked a better “sgt pepper”track than that. I have the 2017 stereo version of it so I can get a pepper fix from that. But it’s in that inclusion of songs that shouldn’t really have been in it imo. Agree on “she loves you” & “I am the walrus”. I don’t dislike either versions on these albums. I’ve only ever borrowed the ancient vinyl versions of these in the 80s. So these versions are fantastic compilations that everyone should own.
Overall, thrilled with the Red/ Blue remixes, even amongst some of the “surprises”. It is vibrant and clear. Now & Then is already a treasure. Beautiful song from our Fabs!. ( it has been so nice talking Beatles in some of my local record shops). PS-One day, while in one of the shops. I witnessed copies of Now & Then flying off the shelves. I felt like a proud Beatles fan! 😎🤣
I'd love to hear, maybe a separate video, if any of the new mixes have now become your favorite above the mono. And which you keep preffering in mono. I just cant make up my mind for some tracks.
I don’t understand why people say they dislike new remixes because they aren’t like the old versions….isn’t that the point of remixing? If they are the same then there is no point. On the early stuff - of course they are huge inprovements because the original stereo versions were so poor. The late album remixes have shown deminishing returns because the original stereo mixes were good anyway.
So I have waited to comment until I really had good listens to all of them. I would agree with you that the packaging of the CD is going to lead to some issues with bending etc. I am glad I bought the slip case from the Beatles (although as you pointed out Universal music did a Terrible job handling the pre orders) I also agree with you that the songs added in Chronological order on the CD is a much more pleasant listening experience. Hearing I Saw Her Standing there after Eleanor Rigby just is jarring. I wonder if they purposely added more George songs on the discs to appease Olivia? Just a thought-a lot of the additions are George songs. If people are only going to buy one of the records I so think it should be the Red album. The remastering makes me feel like I am listening to brand new songs and I am hearing things that I have never heard before (Ringo's bongos on A Hard Day's night for example) The Red Album really gets me excited about the new remixes that could be coming in the future. The Blue album was not as earth shaking for me because most of the tracks have already been remastered over the last 6 years. I was disappointed that some of the tracks used the 2015 remaster instead of a whole new one. So what would excite you next the most? A Rubber Soul box? A Past Masters Box (which I am rooting for)? Anthology redo? and if you were a guessing man what do you think my wallet will have to shell out for next. Thanks for doing these videos Andrew-I always look forward to them and you have great insight as a fan which I love.
Got my cassette tape of Now and Then! I have an older car that still has a cassette player on it. Driving around blasting Now and Then and Love Me Do is so much fun. Could the bass be louder on the remix of Love Me Do? Not that I mind feeling like I am standing next to McCartney, but this is a whole new experience. 😳
I actually agree with you that Helter Skelter and If I Fell should be included. The reason Glass Onion is on the set is because it became a minor hit in one of the countries. Oh Darling should definitely be on there. As for the covers I would have chosen Rock n Roll Music etc. Also I’ll follow the sun should probably have a place on the set. The issue with the Beatles is that every song is great. They can all be on here!
Completely agree with the additions you think works and which doesn't. Songs like If I Fell, I'll Be Back, I've Just Seen A Face and Helter Skelter (fade edit) should have been on there.
Hi mate another great and interesting video! BTW Wife & myself are seeing your Bootleg Beatles tomorrow Friday Nite 24th at our local Rugby Leagues Club here in Penrith. Got great seats. If I meet them will give them your regards !
Great thoughts - I couldn't agree more. Great idea to listen to the third LP as a bonus - I also had a confused feeling when I heard it one after the other! That makes absolutely no sense at all! About the sleeves: in such cases I wash the LPs and then put them in Nagaoka Antistatic Inner Record Sleeves, which I can then easily put into the original paper sleeves. 🎉 I also thought the packaging was quite simple - I mean, they charge quite a lot for the LPs and CDs - they need decent packaging - at least a triple-sleeve cover! Now & Then also somehow seems like a hush-hush operation😢
Listening to the new Red CD, two songs that stood out to me were "If I Needed Someone' and 'Tomorrow Never Knows". Both sounded fantastic. A lot of the new mixes I didn't like. Suddenly I was hearing bouncy bass lines when I didn't notice any bass before. This is not right. I want to hear essentially the same recording as before.
Hi Andrew & as always a well balanced & honest review from your good self & for me personally the Now & Then single turned out even better than I had hoped for & yes it's a true Beatles song & the video is one of the greatest I've ever seen! The Red Album ticks all the boxes with the majority of songs remixed & much better for it but my honest opinion on the Blue Album is mixed as for me there aew too many previously released mixes & i do love all the 2023 remixes (I Am The Walrus) included! it's a pity more weren't given the same treatment! As for the tracklisting I would have replaced Within You Without You with It's All Too Much & I Want You (She's So Heavy) with Happiness Is A Warm Gun & Cry Baby Cry but this is only my personal opinion!
Red & Blue the originals was my introduction to the Beatles as a teenager. My personal favorite has always been Don’t Let Me Down. That was my reason for buying in the 1st place. Still to this day I still don’t understand why it was only a B Side? Do you know why ? Now & Then is just a great way to end & so beautiful. Loving your deep dives into everything Beatles & hope to if I can join your next live stream 😊
Haven't bought the CDs (yet!) but I'm sure will do soon. Agree with your opinions on the songs that were lucky to get on there, some strange choices perhaps. The CD packaging doesn't really look any different to the previous 2010 versions which is unfortunate, had hoped they'd look a little bit more special. Once the remixes are done I can imagine them bringing out a boxed set of all the remixed albums! I can see a time in the future when the original mono mixes will get reissued again and promoted as the original "authorised" versions (a bit like John's 70th birthday box set). It'll be just another way of keeping the reissues going for many years to come.
I absolutely concur with your judgement on the 10 songs that definitely deserved to be added, and the ones that perhaps are “overachieving”. I guess Glass Onion, and Within You, Without You became more famous to the general public after appearing on the LOVE album. I imagine the Harrison camp also wanted George’s Indian music to be represented. The original 1973 albums, arguably overrepresented, Rubber Soul and underrepresented Revolver (although Klein may well have been correctly tuned into public taste as RS was a very popular album). The answer here seems to have just been to shove more Revolver songs on. Much as I love Oh Darling, it does seem a weird addition, because I don’t think it’s that well-known from radio play or anything. The compilation now contains all of side one of Abbey Road apart from Maxwell, and that seems a bit too much to me. Given that they are aiming this at the young generation, I am quite surprised that You Can’t Do That is on there because I would’ve thought it might be classified as “politically incorrect” or “problematic “ due to being about a controlling relationship! 🤣 Still, at least it wasn’t Run For Your Life - that might have caused some meltdowns! The song was performed by the band quite a lot, so I guess that’s another reason for its inclusion. I’m surprised Paul didn’t want one of his rock ‘n’ roll covers such as Long Tall Sally.
@@mjames4709 I think it’s great, but I like that kind of 50s throwback thing. Paul was particularly proud of his vocal so maybe he asked for it to be on there? Perhaps to make up for the fact that he doesn’t get a rock ‘n’ roll cover on the Red album.
As always, Andrew, you are well spoken and kind. I think these remixes are interesting, but I think the presentation, packaging, and tracklist choices leave a lot to be desired. The covers/jackets are cheap/flimsy compared to previous reissues of these albums. Charging a super-premium price (80 Euros for just the Red!) for a cheap package like this is very unfortunate. Not sure if you saw Parlogram Auctions cover the brick-walling on the CD's, but that's a travesty as well. This release felt rushed and I'll be skipping it. Glad others enjoy it though, and I appreciate your optimism and positivity! Thanks for the video and the hard work. It was an emotional moment to add Now and Then to my Beatles Singles Collection.
Also, Andrew, I entirely agree about the 'lucky' songs that got on to Blue. They feel indeterminate, rather than gold star, choices, in comparison. None of 'em poor, tho', obviously.
Andrew, regarding the remixes. Firstly there are a handful of really superb remixes (i won't name the songs). Now for the negatives. Generally the team have done a VERY POOR job of most of the songs pre 1964. The only 3 that are good are "I Saw Here Standing there", "Twist & Shout", "I Want To Hold Your Hand". Some of the others suffer from very narrow stereo compared to the rest of the songs on the packages. Others suffer from poor EQ. Others have next to no information in one channel. This is unacceptable. Songs should sound uniform from track to track (stereo width, stereo balance, EQ). There is a small record company (which i won't name) which has been using this demix technology for around 10 years now that would have done highly superior mixes of "Love Me Do", "Please Please Me", "All My Loving", "She Loves You" etc etc. In fact my own mix of "She Loves You" blows this one out of the water.
Hi Andrew, it's just come to my attention that there is a super deluxe version of "Now And Then" available. Do you know anything about it?Just seen it on a TH-camr from America who goes by the name of Mathew Street..yeh i know. Any info on this would be good.
There doesn't seem to be a lot of footage of John Not foolin about..! I am one of the few people who actually lLIKE the new Walrus mix. I always felt it was a little too long at the end and most of that stuff didn't really bring much to the party. This version sounds more concise. I enjoy the song more now (that i have got over the shock !).
Oh, If I Fell is such a brilliant song. Everly Brothers style. Would have LOVED to have it on the Red album. Was really hoping for a Rubber Soul set this years but Im hugely enjoying the Red and the Blue albums!
Overall, I am with you, Andrew, that these new remixes, particularly on the red album by and large are fantastic and at worst interesting. The problem with “She Loves You” lies in the fact that it is an unprecedented stereo mix that I thought we would never hear. The only thing you can compare it to is the stereo mix for “Sie Liebt Dich” and it is a better mix than that. Careful what you ask for as they say, multi tracks can be mixed into mono or stereo, but you need to remember that, in particular, the singles were tracked with mono in mind. A stereo mix of “She Loves You” will never match the heights and the urgency of that fantastic mono mix. “I Am The Walrus” I think is an absolute triumph. No point remixing it if it’s not going to be different. I am positive that anything “added“ to the end of it are sourced from recordings that were in the running for the original mix. So well done Giles Martin, although I feel remixing is sacrilegious there is certainly a case when it comes to many 60s stereo mixes. I think we do deserve proper modern companion stereo mixes. I’ve enjoyed all the “Magical Mystery Tour” cuts but they do not hold a candle to the stunning 1971 German HorZu master. I bought the lot, but I shall not comment on the single!. suffice to say that anyone who sees a value and some emotion in it, well I envy them, I wish I could too. For me the stars of the show are the red and blue albums as expected., which overall sound fantastic. For me, there are only two major cock ups here and once again Apple have shot themselves in the foot which is another thing that they are good at. Briefly the packaging for starters. On what planet do you release a multi album set with predominantly new mixes and not make a single reference to this on the sleeve and absolutely no attempt to visually differentiate this version from the traditional one. Unbelievable, simply because I know we are talking about professional people, but their performance here has been pure amateur hour. By far the biggest blunder though is their failure in managing to expand this sibling brace of double albums over two formats. Timewise there is no reason for this, clearly the entire project has been rushed and mistakes made. “Revolver“ is and will always remain a single album, so let’s call it a “1”. The deluxe box set of the remix consists of four LPs, so does this make it a quadruple album? A “4” if you will? No, it makes it a 1 +3, by which I mean a single album with three bonus discs. Although never consistent of course, we see similar remix/bonus discs all the way back to “Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band“. For instance, the vinyl for that is not a double it is a 1 + 1, single album plus a bonus disc. So if you are on board with me at this point, you might well agree that the new red and blue vinyl albums are not triples, they are 2+1’s, original double albums plus a bonus disc and therefore completely logical. I called this amateur hour because they have failed to mirror this in the CDs. They are, literally, at twos and threes with themselves. The vinyl albums being doubles plus a bonus disc, while the CD’s represent two brand-new double albums. I think the generally agreed hypothesis that the vinyl albums were cut much earlier is likely to be true. That is what the entire product should have been so why did they change their mind and resequence the digital counterparts? I think that this is simply answered by history. The red album has always been a remarkably short program of music for a double album, but that is fine. Yes, they could have packed more songs onto the original red album, but such imbalance in the track quantities between these Red and Blue doubles would have been tantamount to choosing a favourite child. So fully understandable that being too long for a single album and too short for a double then a double it had to be. Fast forward to the red and blue albums arrival on compact disc. Apple had to field voluminous arguments and complaints from the general public regarding the fact that a 60 minute former double vinyl album would have easily fitted a single compact disc. Not wishing to appear like money grabbing opportunists the public statement at the time was that they took the decision to make the double vinyl album a double CD for artistic and historical purposes! The implication being that restructuring a Beatles album was nothing more than a sacrilege which they were not prepared to commit to. Fast forward to 2023 and Apple have once again shot themselves in the foot by not planning ahead properly. The implication is that they have taken a complete U-turn. The vinyls are now 2+1’s languishing uncomfortably and awkwardly by being paired with their digital triple album counterparts. To sum up then when the two most important Beatles compilations ever went to CD, history had to be maintained by making the red album a totally unnecessary double . However, it is perfectly okay to completely resequence the album in order to keep it as a double CD in 2023. They suddenly realised that the intended 2+1 model was not going to sit comfortably again with Joe Public. A double CD resequenced to match the vinyl would have made a very untidy and shabby affair as it would consist of the end of the original double album feeding into a short bonus disc in one. In 1999, a company calling themselves “Apple” released one of the greatest albums of the post Beatles era entitled “Yellow Submarine Songtrack”. In 2023, a company calling themselves “Apple” whom I presume to be the same entity as 1999, have overseen a red and blue remix project targeted for CD and vinyl and resulting accidentally in a new album called “The Beatles, 1962-1966“. It feels unfair to offload all of my cynicism onto the red album so here’s a quick cynical view of the Blue album! Interesting isn’t it, nine bonus tracks. One of these is the brand-new song, leaving us eight other bonus tracks of previously released material. Of these eight mixes, we already have seven of them. The only new mix on the bonus album is “Hey Bulldog“. I’m very happy for its inclusion but could they not have given us more as yet unreleased remixes? Yes I understand the answer to that is that this was all rather rushed but there lies the problem, rushing. They are in a position of being between a rock and a hard place. Both paths lead to a certain amount of confusion so they taken the path of least confusion. Either way it confuses me, even though I’ve made sense of it somehow. And where I shall close my tail of two Apples. Will the real Apple please stand up or sell up.
In Yesterday they even cleaned up the squeezing doors sound at 0:20 lol. In the 2015 mix they already had it removed. I guess Giles didn't listen to the 2015 "1"..Then he would have released She Loves You like that.
I wonder if they'll release the first few albums in one box set, or something, the first three at least, on account of those being potentially much less easy to sell.
As I've said before I'm really happy with these releases, but have only purchased the single and the CD box set (I plan on getting the vinyl box set in the new year), and I think I've said all I have to say on what I like (which is all of it). But the packaging and distribution could be better, and must do better for future releases. Both my CD's and my single arrived on time, in fact my download of Now and Then appeared in my library the night before release, but Love Me Do appeared on release day, which was weird. I also ordered a Now and Then T-shirt which arrived with my CD single in one parcel, but some people I know are still waiting for some of their swag to arrive, and that is not good enough. The only thing I'm not liking is the way that on the vinyl they are putting two records in one sleeve, that's being done a lot with other artists and I don't like that. It's a bit like the ep that came with the Revolver box set last year. I thought a pocket in the book would've been ideal to store that 45. So why not a triple gatefold for the three records? Though I am intending to buy the albums on vinyl, why mess around with the running order, keep it chronological, esp for the New fans this set is hoping to attract. Overall I am loving these releases and can't stop playing them. (still listening to them on my breaks at work on my I-Pod through my headphones) And the more I listen, the more and more I'm loving and enjoying them. So, well done to all involved in making this possible, and thank you Andrew for this video....
In my opinion when an album is remixed you should get what is there already enhanced, not some parts pushed to the background. The guitar parts in Old Brown Shoe sound odd, and the end of I Am The Walrus the same. When I received the deluxe remix of Fugazi by Marillion I was deeply disappointed by the parts that appeared to be completely missing from the original mix, to a point where I don’t play it anymore. Add to, don’t take away.
Good work AD! Always enjoy the brouhaha and blah blah blah following Apple Corps releases. It was only the cd single for me this time. The new single led me to dig out and reacquaint myself with FAAB and RL. I'd like to see these three appear alongside each other one day. As for some of the more controversial remixes, perhaps Apple might take note of some of the YT feedback when it comes to the next box-set releases?
"And your bird can sing" should have been on Red along with "Rain" I reckon.
I couldn’t be happier with these new versions of Red and Blue. Such a joyful experience listening to the new mixes, newly added songs and the nicely reissued packaging
I’m also speaking on behalf of the CD version. The track listing of the vinyl versions sounds lame
I sure like the truer stereo but the high end on the red just bites my ears off.
Yes, the high end is strong, at the expense of low end. The bass needed to be up and more defined.
@@garethmathew69 sure but some of those comparisons would be on Blue not Red. However, I understand. My personal favorite version of “roll over Beethoven” is actually the ELO one
I've addictively watched nearly all of the Red and Blue reviews on youtube. Yours is the best. Great video!
Thank you Sir! 🙂👍
I've gone through 4'copies of red but only two blue 😢
I much prefer the CD versions of the red and blue albums simply because the additional tracks have been placed in their correct chronological order, whereas to me at least, the LP versions feel tacked on. Also, now that Now and Then reached #1 in the UK, I wonder if we’ll see an updated “1” album.
I think the presence of “within you without you” is INTEGRAL as an addition, as a great showcase for George’s best Indian side of music
This seems like an ethical issue on music with historical importance...not to mention the love of so many fans all over the world.
his estate handles his affairs. No issue with that.
It has a rushed vibe about it 🍏
Viet Cong?!
Me too - it's doubling the streaming numbers 😂
I really like the '23 mixes. Ringo's drumming really stands out. And, like you mentioned, some guitars pop out that I haven't heard in the past. I'm biased but many of these should be in top 100 as they are better than most music today. Nothing against Taylor Swift, but these songs are much better.
Its more about hearing the back ground guitars. Hearing acoustic guitars and stuff that gets hard to discern among other instruments. The pianos and cellos and all symphony instruments are much more easy to discern. There's a different between being able to hear what's going on, and able to discern what's going on.
There is no need to compare . It’s better to you but not other people . There is no better , best or bestest . Haha
@anthonyburke223 I think there is a need to compare and to make judgement on many things. For example, some Beef Wellingtions are better than others that tend to leave a somewhat bitter aftertaste.
@@octurn maybe it’s better to say my favourite rather than best
Thanks! 🙂👍
It would be great to get a Magical Mystery Tour/Yellow Submarine remix first to close out the 1967-1968 period.
Finally got them ! It is just a flat out great release. These mixes sound much brighter and more flat out rocking. The older mixes were good for their day but to these ears this is a big leap 😅! Purists will be pissed but don’t care. Now & Then a brilliant goodbye. The video is fabulous!
I enjoyed your review more guitar playing love the red and blue albums. and now and then single vinyl
One thing I’ve notified is each deluxe box set always gets new remixing regardless of prior compilations.
I saw her Standing There is the best remix for me. Great handling of the separation. Not only for George's guitar, but the bass is super clear also
Agree mostly with your lists of songs that should & shouldn't be on the packages.
Great review... 👍
A new generation is introduced to what music can be.
Red album was an absolute joy!!! Blue album was great with a couple of exceptions. Now and Then was disappointing.
Andrew very nice review. Keep up your fantastic Work. From one Beatles fan to another. Keep on bringing the joy ✌️Cheers from Houston TX 🇺🇸
Some awesome early songs not included in the new "Red" album:
It Won't Be Long
Things We Said Today
She's a Woman
I'm a Loser
What You're Doing
The Night Before
I Need You
I've Just Seen a Face
It's Only Love
I'm Looking Through You
Rain
Good Day Sunshine
For No One
But I guess they had to give people a reason to buy the "regular" albums.
I completely agree with you about your review about these 2 reissues
Overall a great addition to the Beatles catalogue.
Great review, more on the audio graphics to show if its bricked walled or not 👍
Hi Andrew, Thank you for an outstanding, honest review. Always enjoy watching your channel.
Thanks Polly 🙂👍
@AndrewDixonMusic I'd say it was to drive more of the sales into the vinyl formats, unfortunately.
Wonderful video Andrew. I have listened closely to both the new Red and Blue albums on a very good, if not esoteric , sound system at high volume . I agree with virtually all of your opinions.
Except I do love the end of I Am the Walrus!
hello Andrew,
I've been a long-time listener to your Beatle podcast on TH-cam, and always have enjoyed them immensely...
Excellent, enjoy the gig!
I also thought the packaging was quite simple - I mean, they charge quite a lot for the LPs and CDs - they need decent packaging - at least a triple-sleeve cover!
Now & Then also somehow seems like a hush-hush operation😢
Excellent review
You need now and then because it goes hand in hand with the new single release
I would have liked the single to have had the "cleaned up" version of John's demo on it. Perhaps it will be released in the future.
Fabulous review Andrew. Thank you! 🙏🏼
Thanks for watching!
I wonder whether Beatles For Sale might be the other way round - it doesn't sell because nobody knows it because none of it is ever on compilations...
Definitely a shame to not have Don't Let Me Down on the Let It Be album, it was by far John's best contribution to the Jan 1969 sessions!
Oh Darling? How did that make the cut?

I think it’s great, but I like that kind of 50s throwback thing. Paul was particularly proud of his vocal so maybe he asked for it to be on there? Perhaps to make up for the fact that he doesn’t get a rock ‘n’ roll cover on the Red album.
I'm happy about it all (new song, video, red and blue re-issues).
I loved Back in the USSR. One of the best mixes on this record.
Andrew, have you come around on the bongos on AHDN? I think it really propels things (granted, more upfront than before).
I like them, I was just very surprised by them!
Youre a guitar man too!? Utterly marvellous. Im basically a pianist myself and would LOVE to master my acoustic guitar!
I'm the opposite to you and would love to be a much better pianist!
Best overall review of these new releases. Thank you. Have to subscribe now. 🙂
Thank you 🙂👍
Also, Andrew, I entirely agree about the 'lucky' songs that got on to Blue.
Hi Philip, it's a bootleg, just a package of various bits and pieces relating to the John songs that Paul, George and Ringo worked on together.
@@AndrewDixonMusic Thanks for clearing it up Andrew..love your channel.
Good Day Sunshine , Birthday, Two of us and Helter Skelter are universally known songs and should have made the cut IMO
Although never consistent of course, we see similar remix/bonus discs all
the way back to “Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band“.
You can’t do that and If I needed someone I think are great additions. I agree with yourself I’m not fussed about the other so so ones you mentioned!
Such a great and informative review!
Thank you! 🙂👍
It does mention NEW mixes on the red's hype sticker.
