I used John's 80s book to do research on the 2 different pressings of Press to Play album as John states the different matrix numbers on each pressing.I was able to then find them. These 5 books are essential to any Paul collector.
Hi Andrew, Great video, I have the other four volumes and I am looking forward to the release of the fifth volume. I have enjoyed reading The Songs He Was Singing series and I find the volumes very informative. Due to an interview I saw on TH-cam I do know that there are a few releases that have been missed due to John Blaney not knowing of there existence. Despite that, John's new book.will be an important addition to my Paul McCartney (Beatles) library.
i use john's books as the where to look for paul and george releases in terms of finding what came out and when. excellent man i,m glad your promoting him
Thanks for the review. Not a series I was aware of, and your points do make it sound interesting. We all went through the ups and downs of the McCartney releases of this period and it is always of value to read honest opinions rather than sycophantic comment. We all went through the frustrations of some of the albums you mention so I suspect we may have similar views on the more shall we say odd release configurations. Yes I'm looking at you Egypt Station amongst others. And some of the decisions such as download-gate and the wackiest and very expensive options. I don't necessarily have a problem with expensive releases (the complete Woodstock was great as was the big Dylan set for his key sixties albums) but the suitcase, no. I am usually predominantly completist with McCartney but in recent years his antics have given me the opportunity to jump off the bandwagon without feeling any twinges of regret. So I think I may enjoy dipping into the book to do some nodding at the comments. Thanks for heads--up. As always your reviews are balanced and well presented.
Looks good Andrew....I'll put it on the list for once I've finished the Legacy one (getting there!). I do have John's book 'Together Alone' which is great fun.
Andrw - did you ever do a review on Bob Spitz biography of The Beatles? What was your impression? One of my daughters classes at UC Davis is "History of the Beatles" (what an awesome class!!) and that is a book the students had to purchase. Although I have read a few others over the years I plan on reading this book after her class ends. They are currently discussing 1964 in class.
The cover art certainly leaves a lot to be desired in my opinion but it sounds very intriguing! As a 24 year old who never had the money for the 2010's Archive releases, I really appreciate an honest, thorough, and chronological analysis of all the releases, what they offer, and where you may be able to most wisely spend your money, For example, it was a bit of a nightmare recently to figure out which Archive Edition Vinyl of Red Rose Speedway to purchase. The 2 LP "alternate album" has many of the bonus tracks, but is still missing some live tracks and a song or two that are on the OTHER Archive Edition version from the same year, which has the original tracklst plus an extra LP of bonuses. there is a lot of overlap but not 100%. Very confusing, you almost need a book to figure it out! I've never heard of the DownloadGate with Flowers, that sounds awful!
I've got Bruce Spizer's latest Beatles book, covering "Please Please Me To With The Beatles" on the way early. The mainstream release is on Oct. 17th. It goes from The Decca Sessions on Jan. 1st, 1962 to early 1964. You get the story of The Beatles breaking in England, Canada and the US. Plus The Decca Sessions, their EMI audition, and all their albums and singles from that timeframe. It should be really interesting.
Have you heard of the book by Luka Perasi called "Paul McCartney Music is Ideas". You would love it. It is a 516 page book that covers every song Paul ever did from 1970-1989 and goes into deep detail - everything you ever wanted to know. The author is quite an impressive biography as well. I purchased it a couple of months ago - it is definitely a reference book.
Nice review Andrew, thank you. And thanks for using my Twitter comment amongst the other's, I appreciate that! I have been waiting for this book for a while actually! I just thought I'd mention too, the size of that book is the same as all the other books on Paul, but strangely, the George books I have are Hardcover, shorter than the Paul one's, and NOT the same size as each other!! 😄 ...and as for John's, it's taller than all of them (about the height of '1964 Eye's Of the Storm'), and only in one volume! It makes me wonder If he left out McCartney III for a separate volume, because of the ridiculous amounts of variations, and having said THAT, imagine him taking on the 80 singles box set!!! 😄😆🤣 You might just have the LAST volume in your hand! 😉 Cheers, Jase
Thanks for this Andrew, another book to add to my ever growing pile of books to read, one I'll definitely be picking up on Oct 20th (along with my cd copy of the new stones album released the same day). I've only ever read one other of John's books, the one he did on Lennon & McCartney, and I really enjoyed that. Does he cover everything in these books, including all of Paul's classical works? As I've only seen those covered in any depth in Classical magazines like Gramaphone and BBC Music. I have read Music is Ideas, another tome that covers all of Pauls recorded output from '69 to '80 I think it was, and I've enjoyed that, these are books you can dip in and out of and use as reference works as you listen to these albums. So really looking forward to this, so again, thank you for bringing this one to my attention Andrew, and thanks for this vid...
I have previous volumes and found them both useful and interesting. I will be picking this one up as well. Another book it would be good to see a review or is Starting Over - The Making of Double Fantasy if you have it. It is essential reading but harder to come by these days. Certainly it would have been great if Ringo had recorded a version of Nobody Told Me for his Stop and Smell The Roses album as suggested by John. Especially if the vocal and production were in the later vein of Weight of the World.
@@AndrewDixonMusic It's a great book. The true story told by the people who were there. Yoko, the production team and the band mainly. Worth seeking out but hard to find these days unfortunately as with a number of great books - the Keith Badman trio released by Omnibus Press for example. Enjoy your videos enormously. Here's to some serious Beatles related activity in the last quarter of the year.
Speaking of whether Paul will have "another full decade," I've been pondering the future. The last three standing - Paul, Ringo, and Yoko - are all elderly. What will happen to Beatledom when they're gone?
@@AndrewDixonMusic Thanks Andrew for the response. A pity as I was trying to be helpful to viewers in providing them with a link to a bibliography of John Blaney's Beatles-related books.
If you have the original 2003 book is there still a need for the first thee seperate volumes? Obviously the upcoming 2010 - 2019 volume covers new ground, but is there any new info to be found in the first volumes if you have the original book?
Great review, enjoying your channel very much. Just for my information…..Is this the first book from this author reviewing a McCartney decade? Or are there already more? Or have i not been listening well enough😌? Many kind regards from the Netherlands.
Great another book. Do we need another book. My book shelfs are so near full. I must admit it does look interesting. Has he paid you to advertise his book And why have you received it two months early
For a start the cover doesn’t match the period. I know it covers the BOTR archive but puts you off it for start. £25 quid for such a slim volume. A cheaper kindle release might prompt some interest.
Is there a release in the book that you don't have? I've got a whole lot of Beatles and McCartney (and Lennon and Harrison and a little bit of Ringo), but to buy it all is a bit too much for me. How does that work for you?
I only have the Bloody Beetroots remixes as downloads, although there was a CD release I'm not sure whether all the remixes that were available for download were released physically.
I hope you do a video on that bit of detective work you uncovered on twitter re: tune in volume 2. Even if it proves to be complete bs by whoever uploaded that I think it would make a fun speculation video!
Thanks Andrew I just found it odd that lots of people were talking about it then the story just went away, I'll be sure to keep an eye out for your video telling us all the good news
@AndrewDixonMusic maybe there is gona be no album an it's just gona be a one sided single... you never know, or maybe the rolling stones got one up on the beatles by announcing there new single an album
Yes, it was a very odd situation. A lot of internal leaks from Paul, Ringo and Giles, via a magician, followed by radio silence. Not the best ramp-up to the release of a final Beatles' single I have witnessed! I don't think publicity and promotion is Apple's strong suit!

Andrew, I'm sure I posted some links here to John Blaney's books listed on 45worlds but I can't see them.
