Thanks man, after an hour, you can get up to Baron. Definitely choose rep over any other rewards at first. When you're allied, each mission has a quick completion time bonus, and that can give you at least 2 mil per set of 20. You just earned a new sub!
I can confirm that this still works as of today. You can level up fastest by traveling back and forth between Mainani and Ngalinn, which is less than 4Ly away. One interesting thing I noticed is that when you're ready to level up, you can ALWAYS get an Imperial Navy level-up contract at Ngalinn. Also, if the Mission Board there doesn't have the level-up contract you want, (i.e. you wanted a Courier job instead of a Planetary Scan Job) just exit the Mission Board and re-load it until you get a Courier level-up job. (They randomize each time, apparently). Make sure you have a small ship, because there's only 1 station in each system and they're both Outposts.
To be clear for people who don't know, when he talks about re-loading the mission board to change the rank up mission, he's not talking about board-flipping which no longer works. For some reason, rank up missions will literally change every time you close and reopen the mission window. It's like a very fast, mini board flip for rank up missions only. Still works as of 6/7/2019.
I've played this game a lot and have all the ranks already, however, I'd just like to say that the rank grind, for me, is the worst thing in the game - so very well done on producing this, which will help a lot of people enjoy the game more.

I think what many videos miss is stating how to unlock the initial entry to where you become "Outsider", as well as mentioning that the experience keeps adding up behind the scenes. Knowing that is invaluable and saves a lot of frustration and guess-work, so thank you again! I've been following your videos and currently my latest difficulty is finding systems to surface mine in. I'm in a Cobra MK III and mostly poor (up to 15 million credits), saving up for a Python to continue mining in. Anytime I see hotspots, I can never find the resources they claim are there. I DO know surface mining relies on "Metallic" rings/belts, so that's not the issue... Anyhow, great info, I have subscribed and look forward to watching many more videos. Keep up the great work!

July 2021 this is still working but expect around 8 to 12 hours to get to Duke for the Cutter. It's not happening in 3 hours like it used to. Can't say exactly how long because I had a fair bit of reputation with the Empire to start with but no rank advancement. If you have a good jump range Krait 2, Python or maybe ASP Explorer here and want to add some variety to courier missions, put a couple of business and/or first class passenger cabins that seat 6-8+ passengers in your ship and watch out for passenger sight seeing missions that come in at one or two locations within 150ly. You'll need to massacre some pirates along the way and an SRV is sometimes needed, although it does not have to be in the ship all the time. Sometimes you'll also need up to 64T of cargo space for some other missions and one rank advancement mission came up needing 21T space.
May 2020 and this still is working. I just spent the last week grinding my Federation Rep. In comparison this was a walk in the park and did not even feel grindy. I was getting loads of missions on the trip to Mies Van Der Rohe's Claim, (around 11 per trip) . I was not getting the same number on the return trip to Hickham survey, (around 1-2 per trip). But also there are a lot of aid missions where you give credits and get rep.
Posted on the federation video as well: It's a mistake to skip the factions without the empire symbol. Even though the sender may not have it, the recipient might and vice versa. The recipient can have it if the sender doesn't. You are also trying to raise your rep with them both. One of my Navy data missions went to a faction without it. I still raised my rank.

As of 27th July, 2019, this method works. I went from rank Outsider to Knight in about 3 hours, going to and from Mainani and Ngalinn or Aituas, it all depends on what missions are available. I do the Data transport runs, but the Reputation gives is Two ++ rather than three. Made a about 5 million credits in the process as well. Great guide, great time saver. One more afternoon and I will be Baron :)

Still works! REP gain is super fast, but rank up missions increase rank only one step per mission (those missions with chain symbol). Rank up missions has been so far either planet landing or pirate hunting, so I suggest you bring ship outfitted for at least one of those. No stations on these systems, so when it comes to shipyard or outfitting, you rely on what ever you can find from fleet carriers, or then you have to jump on other systems. So do come prepared for the rank up missions (not with the empty Hauler like me)...
If you have a large when you arrive head over to Bayah 35.34 LY away and there is a starport called Mobius Enterprise also controlled by the Empire. Shipyard sells the Clipper.

Yesterday another Cmdr has become Duke within a days leisure game play, he said it took him about 6 hours. Starting rank was 0%, he was at Trade Rank Broker, which is about half I believe. Today is 18th of Sept.’18. Good luck Cmdrs o7

just done engineered light ship stripped out good jump range to do this ha .could have done in a bath tub so quick 2 sitting foe about 3 hours would have been quicker if i had fitted guns and took the 3 navel assassin offered. picked up my cutter getting it engineered and a rated good 1/2 billon ship well worth it thanks Astro saved me hours great vids
I just checked Mainani today(2019-01-23) and it is no longer viable. I got 2 data delivery missions, the rest was basically just investor missions. I'm getting real sick of this shit to be honest. They have made the reputation grinds as unpleasant and unfun as humanly possible. They are not challening or hard. They do not offer any interesting gameplay. They are just poorly thought out and tedious. That's it. They require time, nothing else. The moment someone finds a way to make this bullshit slightly less tedious they go in and nerf it into the ground.
worth noting, this is a great way to make money for someone in the early to mid game. once allied with system parties, boom time bonuses are huge. between scquire and duke I made around 60 mil.
I have to say that you can take missions with the other factions if they are delivering to empire factions and you will get rep. Just look at the delivery faction.
Well now missions are give to at least THREE different locations, so I'm not sure if it's still as effective but its not very far anyway (19 ly) but theres two systems instead of one. Only a few missions fo to Ngalinn. Not sure if its "still works". It is, but more flying is needed.

Don't know if you'll see this, but would you consider doing an updated reputation guide? Basically every single method suggested in guides has been nerfed into the ground for both Federation and the Empire. It is as if Frontier is actively trying to make the reputation grinds as unpleasant and unfun as possible and the moment someone finds something to make it slightly less tedious they go in and hammer it down.
Have you thought maybe it's part of the game? I mean, if you can get to elite and rank up to top for every power in a week or two... it's kinda lame. It's already too easy to make billions of credits with mining...

I’ve done the imperial rank grind just need the Fed ranks. I’m at post commander rank now and I just need one more push to finish it. It’s a misery doing it though.
I did this after federation rank grinding at ceos/sothis and this is way faster. I was ranking up each trip for the first 9 ranks then it slowed to a rank every 2 to 3 trips after that to get to duke.
I'm viewing this after the last update in which they stop the ability to board hop. Thus it is still working but one has to take less per trip or take more and go to two systems. I avoid the planet staion until they accumulate.

I'm amazed this still works. 4 months since this was posted. Usually Frontier obliterates anything that makes the game fun and/or easier.

FYI: Make sure you "Sort" the missions first with the "drop down tab" as its faster (to the right of your CR)

Still Works February 23rd, 2020. The stations offer more missions now though so make sure you are only taking the courier missions
I did Baron to Duke (rank 7 to 12) last night in a couple hours. Mainani didnt have many missions, but Ngalinn had plenty. Really fast ranks.
Im a new player and all i wanted to know was how I actually rank up i didnt know those chain marks were for that so thanks 👍
Another tip: do the data missions in a combat ship, if you get interdicted then you can defend yourself
