    Watching Paolo’s videos make me suffer. I was stationed in Japan for 2 years, chose to rent an apartment in the Shibuya prefecture because as a kid growing up, I became obsessed with Japanese Anime, that later evolved into me learning as much as I could about the Japanese culture and their way of life, and when I got the orders for a deployment to Japan, my dream became a reality. I made so many life long friends who to this day I still talk with thru the Line app. Those 2 years were the best 2 years of my life. I did not want to leave. Seeing the same places I’d go hang out with friends, walk, admire, fell in love with, it hurts to the core. I’m finishing my degree in mechanical engineering, and my goal is to be sponsored by a company in Japan so I can get my permanent residency.

      I feel the same when I was stationed (in the early 90’s) Kobe, Japan and Dunoon, Scotland (in the late 80’s). Spent two years in each place but made great life long friends from this life into the next. When I get some other things settled here (my father passed last November and there’s still something’s to straighten out) I would love to go back and spend time, in each country, with very old friends (I consider family), again.

    • @Arouxayis
      @Arouxayis ปีที่แล้ว

      idk about that. i feel like paolo's audience is mainly to people outside japan.. like potential tourists and even then most people wouldn't feel comfortable going to these places without either knowing the language or having a translator. otherwise you might as well go to places not as niche where you know that they'll have someone on board that can speak english.

Im coming to Japan in two months to work as English teacher in Yokohama and your videos helped me so much, I want to know as much about the country from native perspective as I can and you have been absolutely amazing, all your videos seems so genuine and designed to let us all learn more :) I have always been interested in Japanese culture so I read about it a lot but your videos just make it all so much more pleasant and accessible as well as I am feeling a bit more welcomed. I am not a native speaker as Im from Poland so I was worried it would be a hardship for me however I saw that Japan can be welcoming and open mined thanks to you! so I all I want to say is Thank you! :)

    This series is pretty cool. I remember going to a bar in Tokyo where it's prob on the fourth or fifth floor. Four of us crammed into a small elevator prob 2AM, and then went into a bar that seemed to be in an industrial office building (like a few shown here) that that was essentially a bar top and maybe six seats, with a single bartender. The bartender offered crispy snacks, and toy games. It was so cramped, you had to walk in single file to the seats... and if someone at the end wanted to leave, everyone had to get up so the person could leave. It was like drinking in a long closet. Pricing was reasonable for a big city. I still think, how could anyone make a profit having such a small bar. Another interesting place was a bar that had girls which worked there, and encouraged you to drink. That place was a lot more expensive, but also quite interesting. It was a regular modern looking bar, in the day-time, and you could just hang out, and talk to the girls while drinking overpriced drinks.

    By the way, Shimokitazawa has many more hideouts than just this one!
    The whole town has a unique and interesting atmosphere, with a large number of live music clubs that make it a mecca for young bands from eastern Japan, and a concentration of inexpensive and stylish vintage clothing stores.
    If you have some extra time when you come to Japan, I recommend you take a look around!

    Cool content! I love little places like those. One interesting thing I’ve noticed though, the owners of those “secret” places (especially the bars) tend to be… well, secretive. On several occasions, I’ve tried video blogging cool little local places I’ve discovered, but in each instance was asked by the owner not to upload anything to the internet or social media. Kind of weird, right? I mean, you’d think they’d be happy for the publicity. I asked a Japanese friend of mine who is also a bar owner, and he suggested that it could be due to the presence of various criminal organizations in that industry… that small bar owners, especially, would rather not have extra attention that might link them personally with a particular establishment. Or something like that.
    I suppose it also could be a local culture thing... there’s an old Buddhist proverb that’s popular in my area which suggests that fortune comes to those businesses who focus on maintaining their quality instead of self-promotion. I guess that wouldn’t fly in Tokyo. 😅
    Anyway, the craft beer bars certainly DON’T mind the extra attention. And I DO video blog those places. 😆

    • @Jordan-inJapan

      Craft beer bars don’t mind the attention. Maybe because the owners are younger?

    • @Jordan-inJapan
      @Jordan-inJapan ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DoctorEbot Probably. But also because the mainstream awareness of craft/local beer is still low in Japan (outside of major cities) and its growth is being held back by that. So brewers and bar owners really want/need the exposure.
