Yea this has always been an absurd take by people from the comfort of places like the US that have never had to deal with the reality of turning a state on the brink of failure into a functional one (potentially losing the revolutionary war/War of 1812 and going back to being a protected British subject isn't remotely as bad as Haiti). The DR had to endure more or less everything Haiti did for centuries (not just at the hands of their Spanish overlords but Haiti/their French ones as well) and only managed to improve things there the last few decades... through their own hard work with little/no outside help. Now that one of the only third world countries in history has turned itself into a stable, functioning "middle of the pack" country everyone thinks it's their job to just take on the burden of Haiti's problems; if the richest countries on earth can't fix Haiti, what are the odds the DR could fix it compared to the odds it reverts all the progress the DR as well? Open door migration policies in recent years have had horrific consequences on Europe (ask a Swedish person about this) and now the burden of supporting countless refugees is revealing it's insane weight in the US.
