Hi, great video and information. I have two Cherokee Brave Dogwoods, both are fairly young. I don't know how old the tree's were when I bought them but I've had them for about 3.5 years and one is 2 years old. I bought both in the winter and the trunk was about 4' tall and then branches on top of the trunk. The 3.5 year old tree is growing like a tree with a trunk and all foliage is on the top which is what I want. The younger tree right now looks more like a bush which I don't want. When it was purchased it had an actual 4' trunk. It's still in full leaf and there is so much foliage you can't see the trunk at all. It appears that the branches are so heavy with leaves they are almost hanging to the ground. Do you have any recommendations on how I should shape it in the winter so that I promote the trunk to get taller and be prominent? The branches are also getting quite long which is fine but not if it's going to look like a bush. I need the trunk to be taller and the foliage to start at the top of my fence level.

      Hi Kelli,
Many thanks for watching and messaging, much appreciated.
The foliage colours in autumn of Cherokee Brave as so nice, totally understand your reasoning to get them.
I guess the main thing that you need to be aware of is that the clear trunk section will not grow taller, with the only increase in height being as a result of top growth.
This therefore means that in order to create a clear tree like trunk you have to remove growing branches that have developed from the main stem. Basically you are creating a clear stem by what is called crown lifting.
You can remove the unwanted growth in the winter, dormant, period.
I’m terms of shaping the plant / tree you can cut back to create whatever shape you desire so long as you don’t remove more that a third of total growth.
If you need more help then feel free to message here or on instagram, I’m listed under the same name.
      All the best 🌸🌼

      Thanks for the message.
The pruning part is easy, it’s just as in the video.
You can hard prune Cornus but you will be sacrificing the flowering bracts for this year.
The section that is split is it at the base. Is it split above ground level, level with the soil or below soil level?
Also, is the split a recent thing or has it been present for a while?
If the split is above soil level then you can cut the whole branch from the plant, ideally making your cut an inch or two below the point where the split begins.
If the split is level or below the soil then I would apply a winter wash solution to the area, to ensure the wound is clean.
If the wound is recent then you could try to repair the area by using hessian to tie the sections together, allowing nature to do its thing.
If it’s an old wound then clean and leave. Hopefully you will get some fresh growth develop to compensate for any future die back.
Hope this helps you. All the best 🌸

I have 2 year old Kousa and currently it looks like more of a bush then a tree. The leaves cascade all the way down to the soil. Am I understanding correctly that I should leave it be and the ovehanging canopy will naturally defoliate the bottom leaves exposing the trunk?...in turn, giving more of a tree look.
    Thank you

      Hi Tina.
Many thanks for watching and your message.
You are correct in your understanding of what will eventually happen but ideally you don’t want to allow that to happen.
The lower branches will die back slowly as the light levels decrease to the lower leaves, with the leaves not being able to photosynthesise efficiently.
You are better to be pro active and prune out the unwanted stems so that you promote new growth elsewhere, as well as promoting improved vigour.
Hope this makes sense, Ian 🌸

Hi. Thanks for watching and your message.
Ideally you want to prune Cornus during their dormant period, up to when the buds begin to swell.
Don’t prune in summer as the plants will go into shock and won’t produce flower buds.
      Hope this helps
