I have a 3 year old Kousa that is thriving and producing flowers but looks more like a bush than a tree. Should I take off the lower branches to expose the trunk?

Hi There! Great question!! Without seeing it and hearing your description- it sounds like you have a multi stem dogwood. They are wonderful, and the shape is much desired (speaking for myself…as I recently tried to find some for my yard! 😆) It really depends on your preference, but it may be a little work to “train” it at this point. Personally- I like to let plants do their thing…and the less work the better! 😊🌸

Have you noticed any specific birds that are attracted to these types of Dogwoods? Thanks for sharing these beautiful trees.

Wonderful question! I often see birds nests in them, and have had cardinals and bluebirds visit them in my gardens. But many birds use the dogwoods for food and nesting! Thank you for watching our video!

Hi - lovely video and trees! Just wondering do Heart Throb and Milky Way have the beautiful berries? Also, I read that Heart Throb may actually be “Miss Satomi”?? I will look for these trees this spring, fingers crossed I can find them!! 🌸

Thank you! They are both in my own yard and I can’t say enough about them! Yes-they both have berries. I have not heard that about “Heart Throb”, but very interesting! That one has such a long bloom time as well. Happy Spring and thank you for your comment!

I am wondering if I can have these beautiful flower trees in my backyard for zone 9. Although you mentioned zone 5-8 but is there any exception, if I can plant these in shade. Thank you!❤

Hi there and thank you for watching! Our planting zones have recently changed- so I would double check your zone and the tag. You just may be able to plant these beauties- or something comparable. Happy gardening!

Thanks for the informative video ! Do you know of an expert arborist in the MA/RI area who can do grafting on Kousa Dogwoods?

Beautiful trees. I just bought one of these babies the Kousa dogwood (white) first time buying. Such a different looking tree. I plan to put this in my front yard because I have the space but my front yard gets scorching sun. Does this tree tolerate full sun?

I heard they do well, with part shade (afternoon shade) like beside a tree (15-25 feet away). I’m not too familiar with trees that do well with full sun other than palms. It’s hard to find trees that can handle the over bearing sun well

@@Sanchez96d My 30 yr old Kousa was over 30 ft tall... full south exposure and did wonderfully every year!

Hi There! It’s best left for the birds. Thanks for watching and so glad this helped identify the dogwood!

I have found recipes for Kousa jam. Just google it. But I leave most on the tree for my birds 🙂

Sadly the Kousa dogwood is becoming invasive. I grew up with them and have nostalgia for them, the fruit is tasty too. Unfortunately our native plants and wildlife are already under such an attack from barberry and bittersweet. I’d love to see content for gardening with native plants. Thanks!

This tree supports wildlife. Not every introduced species is bad for the environment.
