    Over the last three years my mountain neighborhood in zone 6b exploded with Dogwoods growing along the road and 300-500' into the wood line. I was lucky to have one wild Dogwood pop up on my property now it's the showcase of all my trees and plants with it's early spring bloom bringing much needed color to the forest. Time to start taking cuttings from the dogwoods to get more growing on my property.

    I just collected a bunch of wild seeds. The plan is to start a few in pots, and direct sow a few more along my woods. We’ll see how it work out 🤞

    I had read dogwoods like lots of water, so I was about to plant one in a low spot in my yard that collects water. Since you said they need to dry out in between rains I probably won’t now. The area only gets really wet when there is a lot of rain like hurricane Michael going through last week. Now I’ll plant one somewhere else in my yard.

    I have a white dogwood that I planted last a year. I live in southeastern Ohio. It did seemingly great last year. I used one of the watering bags around the base until the late fall started. Now that it is spring, it is not coming back how I anticipated. I thought it was dead as I had done a bend test on one of the branches and it snapped immediately. A few weeks ago, another branch area (three main branches coming from trunk) began to show signs of life. It has buds on it, but they seemingly are very slow at opening as they have not opened yet. I sawed one of the three main branches off that I did the snap test on one of its limbs. Of the remaining two main branches, the one has the buds and the other still has some flexible limbs on it, but no blooms. I’m not quite sure what to do at this point.

    Very helpful. Thank you. I just planted a small (3 feet high) dogwood yesterday. I live in central Maryland. It sounds like I shouldn’t water the tree if the soil is moist. How can I determine if the soil is sufficiently dry?

    I recently realized my dogwood is the slowest growing tree ever! I planted it in 2016 apparently and well darn if it ain’t still almost the same height but at least more branches! It’s just weird 😂

    OK the last 2 winters here in central GA we had like record breaking wet and rain. I lost a number of full grown wild dogwoods during those wet winters; I presume from ANTHROCNOSE fungal infection.
    Is there any hope for our native dogwoods? Any resistant cultivars that will survive the plague?
    thanks Love your vids.

    A tree company planted a Cornus Cherokee Brave dogwood tree in my yard last July. It is a small new tree 5-6 tall. I watered it every day until late fall last year. I wrapped it before winter. Now I haven't seen any new leaves. Is there any problem? When does it leaf out in Northern Virginia? Weather is warm since April 13 (close to 70F). Thank you very much for your help.

    Great video Jim. I have two questions. We live in Porter County Indiana. An hour outside of Chicago. How deep should I plant the tree (8-9 feet, 2") It's a White Kousa Dogwood. And what fertilizer or other elements should I add to the soil? The nurseries in our area charge $100.00 to plant and $40.00 to deliver. I think I can do it myself.

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can definitely do it yourself. Leave it elevated a few inches above the original soil line. You can fertilize it with plant tone or Holly tone. You could get a couple of bags of compost to mix into the existing soil if you want too, but you don't have too.

    Cornus plants are often very expensive and not many varieties are available in my area (Denmark, Northern Europe). If I buy seeds from say Cornus Kousa Satomi (variety with pink flowers) or a variegated Cornua, can I be sure that they will be identical to the mother plant? Or can the flowers result in plain white or variegated leaves disappear??

      My neighbor had a couple dogwoods in his front yard, one of them is pink. They are overshadowed by a couple larger trees so his dogwoods dont really grow much or flower much. Since then he had to cut the biggest tree down and the dogwoods are now getting some sun and growing a lot better with blooms now. Maybe you could have some limbs cut from your trees to give a little sun to the dogwoods. I have a couple white bloom dogwoods that are out by themselves and they do good.

    • @agreetodisagree4751
      @agreetodisagree4751 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't know a lot about it, but...
      I am told that the native pacific dogwood, Cornus nuttallii, is becoming endangered because of some kind of widespread introduced soil microbe. I just bought a Cornus nuttallii grafted on to a resistant root stock for Washington, west side of the Cascades (between Mt. Ranier and Mt. St. Helens 1000' Zone 8a). Thus, you may have a hard time propagating Cornus nuttallii.

    Jim, I recently had a landscaping company plant a large white dogwood in my yard. It is basically full sunlight. Previous to that I had a small pink dogwood planted there. The first trees leaves curled and dried out. I believe it got too much water. When they came to plant the larger tree they said the soil was still wet, but planted the tree in the same area and did not suggest it might need to be moved. My soil may be some clay but not that really hard clay. This tree has been there about a month. They told me only to water it once a week about an inch of water. Now this tree has dry leaves which have curled also. Is my tree dying? Or do I need to dig it up and replant it. Is there something I can do to save it. It looks dry. Thank you in advance.

I have another question, I have a really tall cherry tree next to it and it has horrible surface roots. Can anything be done about those?
