Allotment Update July 2024, Allotment Diary, Allotment Gardening
Allotment Update July 2024, Allotment Diary, Allotment Gardening
This is essentially a series of video diaries showing the development of my allotment plot.
The plot size is 16.1metres long and 12.1 metres wide. I took the decision, based upon my previous allotment experience, to create raised beds throughout the whole site. The larger beds are 6 metres in length with the smaller beds being 3.6 metres in length. All beds being 1.2 metres wide.
The allotment has been created on old grazing land where the soil is mainly clay, so doesn't drain well in winter and then shrinks and cracks in summer. Clay does retain nutrients well so with some work it can become great.
I take an honest and pragmatic view on the successes and failures of the crop that I am trying to grow.

    I think we all need a bit of sunshine Ian. It’s been such a dreadful year weather wise it makes you want to pack it all in! I’m glad you’ve posted about your shallots as I put mine in round about the same time so I’ll pull mine this week if they look ready. Onwards and upwards as they say!!!!

      @@Tea_and_thyme_2012 Deb, I can’t believe the weather has been this bad. Whilst the poor weather was an issue at the start of the year with slugs being a pain I actually think the poor weather now could have a bigger impact. Many more summer crop yields will be affected so shop prices will also increase. So disappointed with my garlic and in particular my onions. We will definitely need to buy onions this year which doesn’t happen too often. Hope your shallots are good

      @@marcorivas6363 Hi Marco. Many thanks for watching the video and for your question. I actually purchased the seeds from a seller on eBay as I couldn’t find a U.K. seller, at the time, but was keen to try growing the plants. In a hotter climate than the U.K. then the plants would get significantly bigger so I imagine the fruit would also be larger too. I don’t know if there are other varieties of Pepino to try but one more suited to cooler climates would be good. All the best with your growing 🍈🪴

    Your sheer volume of plants I would think makes that an awesome harvest. And they aren't such terrible bulbs; like you said some of them were pretty good. But I understand if you're market gardening it's a different story. All in all I understand your frustration. I'm in the US and this is my (I think) 3rd harvest of garlic. I have signs of what I thought was Anthracnose but now I'm wondering if it isn't the Leek Moth as someone suggested. Then again I have ump-teen earwigs...ugh... all in all, I feel you. But great growing nonetheless.

    • @diyhomeandgardening
      @diyhomeandgardening 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi. Thanks for the message. I would suspect that the yellowing of the leaves is due to lack of fertiliser available to the plants. Watering every day would be making things worse as the water is diluting down any nutrients that would be present in the soil. Yellowing leaves in Photinia can be a result of lack of nitrogen, magnesium or the soil not being acidic enough. I would suggest applying a liquid feed that is marked up as Ericaceous (suitable for Rhododendron and Camellia) as that will act quickly. You can also apply a slow release fertiliser that will break down more gradually with the daily watering. Maybe adjust the amount of water that is going into your plants too. Watering in the morning is always best. Hope this helps you 🌸🌼

      Hi Sam. I’ve tried planting supermarket garlic before where it has come from a European country and labelled as a particular variety, as you can be fairly confident that it is what it says it is. Unfortunately a lot of garlic does come from China and then it doesn’t like our conditions too much. Also, you can’t guarantee the variety is the variety. I bought some garlic labelled as elephant garlic and when I tried to show it was told it wasn’t that variety. I would always buy from a garden centre or from the Isle of Wight garlic farm. Hi. Thanks, as always, for watching. I’ve always struggled with growing Aubergines from seed so haven’t bothered the last couple of years. Last year I bought a grafted type which of Aubergine was was amazing, especially as I grew it outside in a container. As far as squash go I have planted mine outside at the allotment as usual but have been scattering slug pellets to try to control pest numbers. That said, I have noticed that some of the plant stems have been eaten. I get my squash to a decent size in a 13cm pot before planting out so they can fend for themselves a bit better. I tried growing butternut squash in pots a few years ago but they didn’t do that well as I think they never had enough compost to retain enough moisture. They also took up a lot of patio space. Good luck with your experimenting and growing 🌸🌼

    trying out lemon drop,cayenne, and a thai\ birdchilly i belive, the thai are about 2cm long and full of seeds, the young plants have dark grenish\purple leafs with green vains, maybe you know it? 1 2cm chilly is good for one big pot, by my standards anyway,and i thake out the seeds:) i was curius if you have tried any capsicum pubescens? only heard about them some days ago, they can thake some lover temperatures, sweet type and not so hot, sounds god for my palet:) rocoto is also a name used

      Thanks for the message. I do like a Thai chilli but can’t seem to find genuine seed stock. I’m very interested by the sounds of Capsicum pubescens. Definitely going to do some research on that one. What size pots do you grow in? Do you grow outdoors or under covers? Thanks again 🌶️

    great propagation video, i have just cut back one of my bushy my hot lips bushes, and put in how to propagate, your video came up first. very helpful. one quick question - do you water the cuttings very much or mist at all?

    • @diyhomeandgardening
      @diyhomeandgardening 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Rachel. Thanks for watching and the question. Give the compost a good water before placing the cuttings into it. The compost will then only need the occasional water to keep the cuttings on the moist side. I place the cuttings into a more shaded area to stop them getting scorched by the sun, and losing too much moisture through evaporation. No need to mist. All the best and enjoy all those free plants 🌸🪴

    Hi @DIY Home and Gardening, Q1 Do Stevia plant change taste once they start flowering? Q2 What is the best way to propagate it? Just put cutting in water or in wet potting mix?

    • @diyhomeandgardening
      @diyhomeandgardening หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Alexandre. Many thanks for watching and for the questions. I haven’t allowed my plants to produce flowers so can’t comment as to if leaf flavour is altered at that stage. In terms of propagation, I have found Stevia produces root quickly in water but then takes a while to get growing once potted into compost. Cuttings that are taken and placed directly into compost seem to do better. Once the cuttings have rooted and start to grow I have found they produce much better plants if the tops are pinched out. Hope this helps you. Enjoy your growing 🪴🌼
