Dont think of low branches on a young tree as scaffold limbs, they are all temporary and will removed eventually. In addition, structural pruning at planting has been scientifically proven to be beneficial. Check out the work of Dr Ed Gilman of the University of Florida.

LOL you'll be 175 years old when that tree is producing shade.

I just purchased from a local nursery and planted 40 Small Leaf Linden trees in NJ. They seem to be about 2 years old or so (1 to 1-1/2 inch trunk diameter and about 8-10 feet tall). I badly needed some guidance regarding young trees pruning/trimming/training. This video is the best. Shows all I need to know. Would have been useful to mention the best season to prune but from video seem to be late fall/winter. Also useful a quick view before/after pruning.

Hello. Thank for this video. I have a young red oak that is growing in my back yard but I don’t know how to take care of it. It started growing last September 2019 and it is about 4’. Any tips or recommendations to continue growing it? Thanks in advance.

Hi, thanks for the video. I just planted a 2 year old Tilia Cordata sapling couple of weeks ago. My question is that can I prune it already?( it has 3 branches 1 meter from the root and I don’t want that. I just want it to have branches at least 1,5 meters from the roots.

Will that new central leader straighten out and upwards as it grows or will it continue on an angle?

I thought the idea was to leave 18-24" between limbs as you go up and around but you are leaving two or three at the same height with no vertical spacing...just on different sides. (at about 3:50-4:00 you left three with about 6" of each other vertically) Why is that okay? I have a 14' green ash that I am just looking to choose scaffold branches on.

I planted a new tree and it looks like a bush, I should leave it looking like that? I got a free tree from the City but I'm sure I need to cut off the bottom branches so it looks something like a tree?

Will a green ash grow taller if you snip out the weaker of the two leaders when the tree decides to start growing two of them at about 12 to 15 feet...and if so, does that make the tree canopy noticeably narrower? I am asking because tree heights and widths always seem to be given in a range so I was thinking unpruned with two leaders = shorter but wider and pruned to one leader = taller but narrower.

Great video. I’ve got to loop off a dead leader soon...was nervous about it.
