Hey Haley! You don’t know me but I’ve started listening to your music about 5 months ago. Your voice has something even the most talented singers don’t. When you sing, I hear emotion absolutely everywhere. I’ve been happy and have listened to a sad song of yours and cried . Vice Versa Same with your happy songs! To ask the question: "Who am I to be loved by you?" is to diminish yourself; to my mind, there is no need to do this, and frankly, I'm not sure that's what God wants us to be doing. God wants to lift us up, right? We deserve to know that WE ARE wonderful. This is not conceit or vanity. This is the truth.
Except we AREN’T wonderful. Any goodness we have in ourselves doesn’t measure up to God’s goodness. We are a mess as humans. God MADE us to be wonderful, yes, that is what he wants for us. But it’s not like we have done anything to deserve it. We lie, cheat, steal, lust, kill each other for fun, the list goes on. Why would God love people like that?
It’s like if Paul in the Bible said “I am wonderful, and of course God loves me, why wouldn’t he.”
Instead he says, “Oh, Wretched man that I am.”
Instead of self-deprecation, it’s humble realization. It’s even more humbling and amazing that we aren’t wonderful within ourselves, YET God still loves us, and wants to wash us of our mistakes and welcome us into his kingdom. Otherwise, if we were inherently good, why would we even need God? God is the one that MAKES us wonderful.
He says “Without me, you can do nothing.”
I kind of understand what you’re saying, from a certain perspective.
But the message of the song is not a put down to say “You make mistakes. God doesn’t want you.” It’s “You’ve made mistakes, YET God still wants you. Despite the wrong that we inherently do as Man”
This song is a reference to Psalms 4:8 where the writer writes “who is man that you are mindful of him and the son of man that you might visit him”
As a believer I dont self depreciate nor to pump myself up. I rather take myself out of the equation and let it be Christ shown through me
